  • One of British music's most endearing characters, the inimitable John Otway has been performing and recording for the past three decades, building a dedicated cult following through relentless touring. In this typically frank and often mirth-inducing hour-long interview with Iain McNay for cherryred.tv, John talks about his career, life and music at length. He was also kind enough to play three acoustic songs in the studio: 'Cor Baby That's Really Free', 'Beware Of The Flowers' (both sides of his breakthrough 1977 hit) and 'Poetry And Jazz'. Not to be missed by lovers of English pop eccentricity!

John has found the real meaning of "success." He celebrated his 60th birthday on October 2nd 2014, during his "Film Star Tour." Aware of his own limitations as a singer and musician, he has earned the respect of fellow performers, audiences, promoters and theatre managers. His fulsome tribute to Willie Barrett demonstrates that he has achieved his status through association with and appreciation of fine musicians. He has clearly made mistakes as we all do, from time to time has let people down but from it all has remained a modest, easy going person and an outstanding performer. A fabulous interview which enables us to appreciate what a special guy he is.

I met John once and shook his hand. He had no idea who I was but was warm and friendly. The world is somehow a nicer place with John Otway in it. For my money his best songs are poetry and jazz, and bluey green. He's more talented than many give him credit for.

I've loved _Bluey Green_ ever since I first heard it in the late '70's.

John is such a star. ❤️ He's really fantastic as a performer. Excellent as a songwriter. He's truly unique in what he brings to the world of music, and I myself echo the other comments here. I'm so glad that John Otway exists. He makes the world a better place. Thanks John. 😊

Simply the best performer and entertainer I ever saw in a pub.... All over London.... Putney, Fulham, Stoke Newington and beyond, throughout the Eighties and early Nineties.
Never, ever a bad gig. Never.
He seemed to love performing and his audience shared his enthusiasm.
Same old songs, same old sets and never, ever dull.
Hats off to the excellent Mr Otway.
    Twice!

I was lucky enough to interview John Otway for the Big Issue Cymru in a Cardiff nightclub out by the Royal Infirmary. 20 years later the name escapes me, but thanks to Steve Johnson of Red Dragon Radio fame I met one of the real gentlemen of Rock. My article soon became yesterday's chip paper. I have never forgotten that evening and what a real star he was

What a nice grounded and talented man he is

The band I was in (Electrictricity re-named as Bone Idol) supported John Otway as our first ever gig. We also supported him about a year two year later. First as Electrictricity then as Bone Idol. Great gigs.

Great stuff. Interviewee and interviewer both down to earth and would both be great people to spend an evening in the pub with.

The interviewer was too harsh on john...ending on the low point of Otway airlines and the world tour.
He also was TOO surprised that John had 4,600come watch his Albert hall gig.
He kept saying "but how on earth did you get 4,600??!!"
      Because he's fantastic maybe?

that last song ,if you offered it to an established star, i am sure it would be a genuine and moving emotional hit. Perhaps people are not looking past your predominant, comedic talent to take you seriously when something worthwhile like this emerges.

OK, Otway is soon to be 60 or so I'm told!
He's been on Buzzcocks twice, once in the line up and once on the team.......isn't it about time he presented the show??
Oh, He needs a 3rd hit to go with it too!
    "ooz a lucky birthday boy?"

urrrrrrrrrrr Ian Mcnay sure knows how to drag on... He keeps braking John's flow with the most inane questions, what a drip!

totally agree...he was unnecessary and harsh .
His few attempts at compliments were very patronising.
John Otway is the best of British!

  • @gushutchinson8758

It's a bit overused but in his case very much a fact.
    OTWAY IS UNDERRATED !
    There...I said it .
He's also a British institution ..what?
like the government or the NHS?
    Nah!
He has and had the true spirit of punk.
A punk poet..and a surprisingly wonderful songwriter ...proper love songs.
    lovely arranged songs.
    I love his chords!
And that punky folksy folk music.
    So many beautiful songs.
Misty mountain type of songs kick ass
    Louisa on an orse...unbeatable.
I wonder does anyone put him in a triffic bix along with Patrick Fitzgerald ?
    Equal but different.
Patrick has great humour too like on babysitter and but not anymore but Patrick has a more sombre and in your face political side...but of the same era and I wonder if you ever became friends?
    It's never too late!
Another one of the same cloth somewhere in the middle of those 2 is Nigel Birch and the fleapit orchestra.
Another Folk punk poet that works for me.
Amazing violinist acompanies like what Barrett does to John.
They would make excellent companions on a world tour!!
Please do it ...I'd try and follow yous!
    Roadie,or drummer or guitarist needed?!
I have a pure love for you John Otway x

He kept saying 4.600 was EXTRAORDINARY!!!
Not really that extraordinary...he's fucking brilliant!
steady on mate...he has SOME self respect and ego matey !!I was a bit shocked by that .

The interviewer was too harsh...he ended on the excruciating low point of Otway airlines and the world tour.
He then tried a sort of compliment that came over very patronising..."you may not be the best singer/ songwriter/ musician...but I like you because you persist.
That's just not a good (or true) comment.
Plenty of us out here realise
John Otway is a sensational musician
and we're going to love him til the end of time ...and back again...so ya boo suck mr interviewer.

I loved John Otway's music, but it seemed he just fell away so on that basis he would not become a rock star.
