My first Finnish sauna was one of the most magical experiences of my life. I'm Russian and live in a big city. We ( with my wife and two kids) rented a little mökki right on a lake in mid-August. In the first evening I went into the sauna together with my son who was seven at the time. After a while we stopped talking and my brain started to slow down. Looking out of the window was like looking at a beautiful painting of water and birch trees. Then we swam in the lake and the cold water just felt kind of prickly not really cold. I'd never swum naked in a lake before and it was so great because it makes you feel like you're actually a part of the nature around you. Then my son said 'dad, look!' and pointed at a duck and some tiny ducklings who came around from behind a bush and they just swam quietly between us as though we weren't there! Then we watched them go and just stayed in the water looking at the light of the sinking sun coming through the tree branches and ALL we could hear was the sound of nature - water, breeze, leaves, birds. My little boy had a wide excited grin on his face the whole time. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. Later we made a fire and cooked sausages and I drank some cold beer. I've been back seven times now.

+1 for the ‘puu sauna’. Somehow getting the fire going and preparing the sauna is all part of the total experience for me. So good!

Savusauna. It is the best. So nice löyly.
Or kertalämmitteinen where you make fire and when kiuas is warm and you go to löyly there is not fire anymore. There is so much stones that they keep warm.

Our house kiuas is instant ready...naturally it´s electricity kiuas, and that´s always warm. You can go there anytime, but it´s little weard go to cold sauna =P

Hah! Sauna & Long Drink. You´re so Finn already! There is actually three types of wood burning stoves (kiuas). "Jatkuvalämmitteinen" and "kertalämmitteinen". First one is that you can keep the fire on same time as you go to sauna. Latter one is type of stove that you heat it for 5-8 hours but it stays warm for 10-12 hours. But you have to wait that all the wood has burned before you can enter the sauna. And then there is that "savusauna" which is tecnically close to "kertalämmitteinen". My personal favourite is "kertalämmitteinen". The "löyly" is very smooth and moist.I Highly recommend to try that also, if you get a chance.

I also like wood-fired saunas like you, the heat is more comfortable. I like the heat be around 80-85 degrees. I also like to drink Finnish lonkero / long drink or just a soft drink :)

I have two saunas. One is outside in the back of my yard and the other one is downstears where my shower etc is. Both of them are warmed with wood and the kiuas is as you called it, more traditional.

Oh and i like to have the sauna about 75 degrees, lonkero is a good sauna drink, but also karhu. How long will i sit in a sauna depends of the company i have. Alone, not so long..

Personally I feel like they should restart the sauna world championships. It has been on a pause long enough. They just need to alter the format so that the competitors aren't as likely to suffer permanent damage or death. At the end of the day, if you think about it, the man who perished and the one hospitalised both were ready to die for the title. Maybe it seems strange, but it was that important for them. People have died in other sports as well. Ayrton Senna was a highly respected Formula One world champion. F1 races weren't shut down after he died. It would be disrespectful toward a man/woman who gave their life for something to just terminate the whole thing.
Anyway, the smoke sauna is the best. It just has an atmosphere of its own that's impossible to replicate. But make sure, when you first time try it, that the heating process will be handled by someone who knows what they are doing. Not only can you burn down a smoke sauna easier than the other types by doing things wrong, but an improperly heated one is also not always pleasant due to smoke residue in the air. However, when it's properly handled, it's the most pleasant and gentle of all sauna types. The dim lighting and the low tech of it all also gives you a sort of time trip to hundreds of years into the past.

      Hi Herra
Yeah I see your point about staying up the competition again, let’s see if it will happen..
And yes I agree the smoke sauna is on a whole different level!
