My least favorite? Probably the GT-R trims. Non GT-R Skylines in and of themselves are pretty good but the overhype, over priced, and typical RB issues you deal with are pretty annoying with GT-Rs. GT-Rs and Laurels just dont do it for me

From what I've gathered the RX-8 engine is even less stout than the RX-7 and people often swap RX-7 motors or irons into RX-8's for reliability and power. I love the Wenkel concept, wish I had the time and money to own and maintain a turbo RX-7. RX-8...not so much, it had potential to be something great but Mazda threw in that gawd awful third door and the whole car really doesn't flow aesthetically. I remember in junior high seeing the first one and thinking "that's awesome" and six months later I couldn't stand it once I got a close look at it. Bring back the RX-7 Mazda! And only run pre-mix gas, put it in the owner's manual.

I have a Mitsubishi GTO MR Gen 3. And I'll tell you they're amazing to work on, yes they do have a tight engine space but once you learn and start working into the engine bay more, they're actually fun and gives you a challenge. I love a good challenge! I get all my parts in Australia but some come from UK, US and Japan. It can be expensive but many of the people who make the parts support very well and I'll tell you.... They are worth it if you wanna modify a Gto in the long run. Since I have a MR class too, they're much lighter and the fastest in the class. They turn heads alot and many people at car meets got quite jealous. I'm glad I have my dream car and I'm proud to have it no matter what others say. And reliability is very good if you maintain it properly. I believe people who say they aren't never actually worked on one. No offence.

    But having said that-
When I got the car I rebuilt an l28et, tossed that in, put a stand alone ecu on it, upgraded to an r200 dif, 240sx rear disc brakes, 4 piston front brakes, replaced all the bushings, welded coilovers in it, upgraded the radiator, tossed on a huge fmic, redid the fuel system, Replaced most of the interior, stripped it down and painted it, and tossed in a later year 5 speed transmission.

The 1985 to about 1988 Nissan Maxima was a pain in the ass because they shoved an NA 3.0L V6 too tightly in and they didn't do anything about the blazing underhood temperatures. My mother and some of my friends bought them when they were new. Those cars should have had a spare battery, alternator, and starter to go along with the spare tire. I consider it a mechanical miracle The 1989 Maxima was very similar mechanically, but became one of Nissan's toughest cars ever built. I think Nissan's engineering staff was given an impossible deadline to make a FWD V6 car and that was the result. I remember mom's car being towed often, and sky high repair bills due to a cramped underhood space.
However, the JDM U11 Maxima model was probably far worse. In that same cramped and blazing hot engine bay, Nissan decided to cram a turbocharged 2.0L V6 engine. The heat radiating off that turbo must have been intense.
There is a tax based on engine displacement in Japan, and that sometimes resulted in the USA getting a better (Or less awful) car. This is why there the Datsun's name also was based on the engine size. The basic S30 Fairlady had to have an SOHC L20 I6 with 2 carbs, but to get more power, there was a super expensive model called the Z432. The Z432 S20 engine had 4 valve combustion chambers, 3 carbs, and 2 cams.
If a Datsun 240Z or 260Z is an an unreliable expensive pain in the ass, I can't imagine how much worse it must be to own a Fairlady Z432. Multiple carbs require more work to synchronize them. Since Japan had leaded gasoline in the early 70s, you would either have to retard ignition timing greatly to cope with the 91 or 93 octane gasoline in the USA, buy race fuel, or run octane boosters in pump gas. I think Japan's premium unleaded gasoline has more than 93 octane, so race fuel or octane booster might not have been needed there.

    1. Owning a 1g gsx is awesome so long as you're not broke. Did spend a couple weekends just fixing shit but it was well worth it, thing was a blast. 2. I've owned many cars now, and many faster and more valuable than mine but hands down my 04 rx8 has been the best vehicle I've ever purchased, and I dont plan on ever getting rid of It. It's an absolute blast to drive, you can beat the hell out of it with no consequences, and as long as you keep up on matinance they're pretty reliable. Daily drove mine for 3 years aside from winters. Aftermarket parts are abundant and they're for the most part incredibly easy to work on. Also full coverage insurance us about as cheap as covering a 98 civic as technically it's a 1.3l four door. Only thing is I definitely wouldn't recommend owning one if you're not that mechanically inclined or comfortable actually doing work on cars. Also side note burning up a fuse wont melt wiring. Soon as the fuse is gone it's an open circuit. No current flowing.

I'm talking about the mid-to-late 80's wedge that usually gets confused with (and overshadowed by) FC RX7s, MKIII Supras, and C4 Corvettes. It's the ultimate "loved-by-few, forgotten-by-most" JDM machine, with loads of potential, and virtually little-to-no support (aftermarket, or otherwise). FUNKOfilms they’re surprisingly reliable and fairly easy to work on if you have the patience and manage to find one that isn’t loaded up with garbage eBay mods

@@Soviet_Kitty I just got a stock Stealth turbo back in September. I'm looking to do the 120k maintenance in spring and am not looking forward to trying to do that myself.

FUNKOfilms I have an NA Dodge Stealth r/t want to trade :( ? I mean even being NA it feels decently quick at least its faster than my friends Brz lol. But its been pretty reliable as long as you keep up with the scheduled maintenances and the occasional leaks lol they are actually good cars and people saying they are unreliable dont know what they are talking about 😂

@@DaytonaBlueHr I wouldn't say their reputation is so much about unreliability as it is about the difficulty of working on them. I had a lot of fun with it before I put it away for the winter. I honestly can't wait to drive it again. I just want to sort out all the work it needs first. I also need what I'm hoping is a head gasket and not bad turbos. I'm getting a good amount of smoke on idle.

FUNKOfilms Why do you hope its a headgasket lol?? I would hope its just a bad turbo cause replacing Turbos on a Vr-4 is actually pretty easy. Compared to a 300zx there is a lot more working room in a Vr-4. And just upgrade your turbos while you are at it if they are bad lol. Ive replaced some parts on my Stealth with little difficulty most of the time so they are not that difficult to work on.

Got scared when you said the eclipse, i drive a 3rd gen and in all honesty you should've said 3g's. It has proven hard as hell to find parts, at least for me.

I abused my mirage SOOOO much as my first car and I'll be damned it was so reliable. I never had any issues at all it was awesome.

The one single best thing you will ever do as the owner of a RX car... is just go ahead, bite the massive bullet, and convert the engine over to run on premix gas. The engine will never run oil dry if you're running premix.
You just carry the premix oil in the trunk and dump the right amount in the tank before every fill up. It may be tedious, but you have to pay a fun tax when you own a car with a 10k redline.
