Hey Karin! I didn't follow a specific route. I made a list of different sights and cities that I wanted to see in Japan. After I saw what I wanted I made plans to go to next stop and generally kept moving north. I broke the long journey into many smaller steps to help me manage the adventure. I tried a few different apps for navigation but google maps was the most useful since I could easily see changes in elevation, traffic, road closures, accommodations, convenience stores, ect.
