People who have used this car for more then a hour (unlike these people ) know that this car is absolutely amazing
Not for over £80,000
Henry Eastick it is once you consider dollar for dollar and feature by feature.
Dislike these idiots
Cuz phaeton is sooooooo amazing
@@hugo00724 Exactly, and people value unnecessary changes in design and the new just for the new... It was a great car, didnt needed to change much. And the main focus was to be discreet
Of course... the price tag is outrageous. THAT and the fact that it doesnt have a new design was its donwfall. The review was biased, but aiming at the market and the consumers. The world couldnt care less about the Phaeton
This reminded me why I don't watch 5th gear...
I think they missed the whole point of the Phaeton, because VW made it for people who want a lot of luxury, without getting noticed. It is supposed to look like a VW Passat, because if you are a celebrity then you want a car that doesn't scream "look at me!" sometimes, and you don't want that car to be an Opel Corsa.
+CockatooDude exactly, plus they looked at extremely advanced tech and didn t cared at all.
CockatooDude thats exactly why my dad bought it in 2002. He died and now I use it. Love it because know one cares what it is..
@@alfonso87ful sorry to hear that
The car is basically meant for politicians
Exactly.. Bill Shatner has had one since they came out
Bentley and Volkswagen have taught each other the art of luxury. The Phaeton is a wonderful car.
How can you make voice-commanded phone calls from a car that drives itself at 100 mph and then rate it 4?
fifth gear sucks...
+She Swallowed It Mitsubishi Debonair from 1992 had lane keeping support system, using cameras. Honda from 2003 launched its Inspire with LKAS system, that also keeps the car in the road without the need to hold the steering. When you add one Nokia CK200 bluetooth handsfree module, you can achieve the same thing with a car that costs 10 grand. Wow,very impressive VW! Where have you been in the last 20 years buddy..,fishing??
S.T T. Applying your logic, all cars suck because they're a 130+ year old concept?
She Swallowed It I dont follow. Your argument was, that the VW does not deserve 4 stars, cause you can make phone calls, while it drives itself. My answer was that there is long list of older and cheaper cars, that can do the same. Any other theories?
S.T T. Dude but you're just using particular and extreme examples, of couse that features on any given car have already been on a car before. That will always be true except for the first car ever that had it. I only used those two features as an example and because they're the ones he used in this video, but this car has tons more. I feel like the Phaeton it's unfairly hated, just because it's "too expensive for a VW" for brand whores, but I think it's a great luxury car and great value. I'm not saying it doesn't have its faults, but there's that.
I learned more about the Phaeton's cupholders in this review than its engine and how it drives!
So again fifth gear miss the actual point of a particular car.
Why would you want the cupholders to come up? Hmm maybe so you can clean the bottom? And because it looks better when they are up.
+HABSA K this guy gets it !
+Barthoization yeahh!!! :)
Yes this is good idea, but it most fit very good if not all dust etc. will go inside! And this is bad.... Still a lot better then empty holes and a lot of small garbage go inside. This way only go very smaller if fit perfect will be inside clean for years. I do not own the car but one of my friends have it but I never see it. Thats why I watch this video but he own V8.
Oh look it's a German luxury car that is not a Merc, Audi or BMW. Let's hate on it!
+Mr Music Audi is VW so more or less they hate Audi
+Mr Music you are right this car is awesome. That bitch is so stupid.
+emil hristov Well, they do share parts, but that doesn't mean they are the same. Audi's generally have better build quality, are more sporty AND more luxurious, but they do cost more. Even though the Phaeton's interior is freaking amazing, Audi still hold the crown in that regard, even when compared to more expensive Merc's and BMW's. Not only that, but Audi had better interiors back when the Phaeton was brand spanking new. The Phaeton's cousin, the Audi A8/S8 D3 had a better interior (quality wise). It matched the Phaeton in ride quality and luxury, had the same engines to choose from and as an added bonus, it was based on the Audi Space Frame, so it's whole body is aluminium, and thus, is lighter.
It's a German luxury car that really doesn't need to exist. VAG already own a luxury brand, why are they competing against themselves with a slightly less capable version of their own product?
Porsche
Don't understand this at all. I can easily differentiate between this and a Passat. The only reason people say it looks like a Passat is because of the badge. If you want a car that really looks like a copy and paste job, look at the new Mercedes S-Class and C-Class. Another point was that the facelift didn't facelift it enough. New grille, new lights, new wheels and new bumpers not enough? Guess 90% of facelifts on the market aren't enough then.
Last year i travelled in a phaeton tdi from vienna to salzburg and i have to say it's an extremely refined and luxurious car. I really like the descreet design of the ex- and interior.
yes it's a great car, especially for long distance travel at high speed, the score they gave seems like a joke to me !!
Fabulous car. It's not meant to steal the thunder of its more illustrious Bentley cousins, so much as be a test bed for the Continental that followed. Second hand legend (if you get a really good one).
Clarkson liked it when he reviewed it on Top Gear and praised the W12 engine. I agree with Jeremy on this one its a beast of a car.
He chose it over the Jag and BMW or was it Mercedes 🤔
It was the test bed for the Bentley continental 😎
And Fifth Gear gets a [3]
VW Phaeton indeed looks like a bigger Passat, but if they are professionals, they should rate the car's technological advancement rather than it's look.
I like this show, but this was a terrible review and only chips away at the value the team review section could have.
There is a story to be told regarding the Phaeton and any good journalist would jump at it.
Like the Mercedes w124 has a cult following even today for being the last truly over engineered Merc, so is the Phaeton a completely over engineered vehicle. It was Piëch's last baby and anybody car crazy knows that he made some awesome stuff.
He set almost unattainable goals for the Phaeton and has made a losing proposition. The car is not gonna make much profit for vw, but in 50 years time it will be remembered where the current s-class, a8 or 7 series is forgotten.
Preach it brotha. Couldn't have said it better myself
Piech it brotha
trefod
With you all the way!
trefod How exactly can a car be over engineered ? I mean don't get me wrong the W124 is my all time favorite car. Everytime I open its bonet I find out something new about how well thought out it is.
kerk tp If it turns out that doing a proper Mercedes job means the profit margin disappears in a competitive market, then it is over engineered. I became obvious that mercedes had decided to cut corners when they launched the w210. It was a proper rust bucket.
im a vw mechanic in Belgium, had a 4.2 v8 phaeton the other week,i was actually surprised that i liked it more than the audi a8,the seats in the phaeton are amazing, yes the dashboard looks and feels a little old now but i still loved it
Can you tell me more about the maintenance costs ? I'm a mechanic myself but I service only American and Japanese makes. Thanks
depends on the engine, the 3.0 tdi is pretty cheap in maintenance, there is a 3.2 vr6 petrol wich is alsow still affordable, but the bigger the engine the higher costs
My dealers sell only the W12 and the 4.2 V8 locally.
Also, what about the suspension? I have to admit that I'm a little abusive driver when it comes to suspension.
If I were them, I would rate it even lower!, I want to be able to afford it one day and I want that day to come round quick!, in other words; all this negative press will only make this thing depreciate even faster.
Don't wanna say it out loud but the people in the know will tell you how the Phaeton is quite possibly one of the greatest engineering exercises ever in 4 wheels.
Ahmed Irfan It's freaking awesome. Just make sure that in addition to the buy price, you can afford to keep it on the road.
+Ahmed Irfan Also, I'm selling my W12 if anyone is interested in it.
+Philip Jackson email me pics and price please montourjoseph@gmail . com
lol
+Genes and then you simply put a bentley skin and evryone loves it and say its perfect LOL
The VW Phaeton is a great car, based on a Bentley basis. Imagine what they would give a Suzuki Swift or something simulair...
Fifth Gear is simply shit.
Kieran H Well you have a point there but, the Top Gear actors are going to be in a new car show.
+Freek Wennekers lol "based on a bentley", nice try. bentley is a volkswagen underneath, chassis, engine etc
+jh5kl The Phaeton has the same suspension as the Bentley Continental.
Freek Wennekers
no, its the opposite, lets stop trolling please.
the actual name of the chassis of the bentley its even "Volkswagen group d1" lol
After driving Phaeton 4.2, Audi A8 2005 4.2, Mercedes S600 W221 and S300 bluetec W222, passenger in BMW f02 750iL . I can say that the Phaeton is the worse, you might think that the A8 bassicly same car, same engine, same year but it isn't, A8 is much better.
If it was some Jag that has not redesigned for 30 years , it would score much better .
Facts
Fifth Gear, the cheap version of Top Gear...bleahhh!
+Andrea Caucino Not really. Fifth Gear is aimed at a different market. Fifth Gear is more about cars whereas Top Gear turned into a program of scripted "accidents" and jokes that eventually got repetitive and boring. Also, Fifth Gear is actually the original Top Gear with a name change (same production crew and presenters), the BBC wouldn't release the name when the original was axed.
better than TG is today.
lol
Andrea caucino I think U just hate that they along the whole world hate the phaeton
Well that told me fuckall, how fast is that w12 engine, how it delivers power? how much room in the back? how many bodies can i carry in the boot? FACTS!
is fifth gear a crappy top gear?
Crappy is an understatement
hahaha
CarsonAu i'd say more factual or for failed top gear presenters
Well Tiff Needel was on the old Top Gear, after Top Gear modernized he went to Fifth Gear.
A less violent one, no producers were hurt in making of this, I believe.
I’ve just bought a 2012, 3.0 V6 with 61,000 and FSH. It was up for £10,395, but the seller settled on 10K cash. It’s immaculate throughout. I drove it back to Birmingham from London and it is by far the nicest car I’ve owned in terms of refinement and comfort. The CLS I owned is a poor second by comparison. I have waited for the right one to come along, with all of the features that I felt were important. The seats are truly magnificent. 80 mph in comfort and the cabin is virtually silent. Really impressed by the mid range torque and to be fair, overtaking is where I appreciate it the most. I did want the slightly newer version with the updated dash and gear selector, but it’s not that easy to find the exact specimen. I have been using a KA for the last few months, but I think I’ll keep it so I’m not having to do a trip of a couple miles and then shut the engine off. Not good for a big diesel.
honestly speaking. the lady considers this car bland. well, we drive one, and we do consider this lady bland.
Didn't imagine fifth gear to be THIS bad!
4 English people who jealous German product.
+Y Brent why? They said that BMW, Audi and Mercedes do it much better. They just don't like this particular vehicle. And I mean it does look like it's 10 years old brand new. As good as it is, looks matter too.
no just morons..
This comment makes zero sense
This is an unexpected and terrible review ever from Fifth Gear. I have test driven the W12 Phaeton in the Middle East, wait wait wait...all luxury car enthusiasts should test drive this car. It feels more refined, silence ( damn silence ) etc, than the previous model. If you want the example for 'pure elegance on wheels' this is it! Once again this is a shittiest review ever from Fifth Gear.
Sangeeth Sajilal
I do believe the ME was the intended market for this vehicle.
With the high top speed, the temp requirment, fuel consumption, and least of all the solar sun roof that can run the A/C with the engine-off.
Yep, the Middle East was likely where they expected to sell 'em in droves.
Yes, and the Chinese liked the last one so this new one was probably designed with them in mind.
I dont care what these car ‘experts’ said! I have recently purchased a VW Phaeton and I love it!
Champagne car for lemonade money!
What I like about it, its not too ostentatious a real luxury sleeper that'll outrun the chavs in their 328i's
Different people have different preferences. The phaeton is for those people who prefer low profile and the ones who really understands the beauty behind this masterpiece. It is not for those who intend to impress people with their cars' badges.
biased as hell, worst review ever
То many important facts is missing, this overview insufficient.
No matter how low it rates from the team but I want one so bad!!
Great to see some intelligent commenters who know how great the Phaeton really is.
Biblical...
Absolutely the best saloon car ever made 😎😎😎
Here when I first read this I thought this was the review of a NEW Phaeton. I was glad to find out I was wrong. I sure hope they get this next one right...If their sister (Audi) can produce such a great big car, why can't VW?
People who disrespect a phaeton like that have no clue about luxury cars. (I’m a Mercedes fan)
18? It's gotta be better than that.
@ Sam
Yes, indeed you are correct, it is MUCH better than that.
I bought a W12, and I know not a single person who dislikes it.
My brother describes it as 'the easiest care I've ever driven'... however, my mother won't go near it because it is 'too big'. But she can worry about anything.
There is so much more they could have said about it; the fact that it can auto-brake too (you'll never rear-end somebody when in cruise control), the quality of the interior (which I love, hence the purchase), the fact that it is full-time 4WD (which is why I choose it over the M5 that I had been saving for).
The boot (trunk) is cavernous.
The stereo (by Dynaudio - yes I'm an audiophile) is very good indeed.
But the torque - that W12 is full of 'instant-on' whenever you press the loud pedal. Oh, and in this car, there is almost no loud-pedal. The car is near silent, no matter what you are doing to it. Flooring it in this, I passed a cop car or two in my time, and they didn't so much as bat an eyelid. In the Impreza, they'd have called out the helicopter after me. So there is something to be said for the 'stealth' of this vehicle.
150 mph in a Phaeton feels like 80 in your Focus. It eats motorway driving with ease. Need I even describe what the EIGHT-pot brake calipers are capeable of? I think not.
But they had to touch on the quality of the phone - it is unbelievable. Unlike any speakerphone system whether in the office, or elsewhere. It is amazing in quality.
Down-sides? Well there are a few;
Cost of repairs, nothing is cheap here.
Fuel? Well if ya gotta ask... but ok, MOTORWAY mileage, is 25 to 28mpg (Imperial, not US), but around town. Oh dear, I've seen as low as 12 to 15mpg, especially when cold. However, if I start her up in the morning, *and take it easy* to work (~12 miles), the avg trip consumption can just touch 20mpg. I can live with that.
I don't do many miles (with not spending much time in the UK), so a thirsty car, bothers me not.
Some people need to open their eyes.
I give this review, despite being an admirer of Tiff, a solid 2/10. Must try harder.
Jamie Taylor you should have got the m5 grandad.
I wanted a an AWD car, the BMW is rear wheel drive only. The UK has sh1te weather most of the year, so I refuse to get 2WD anymore.
So I'm happy, and so is everyone who has driven it.
End of story.
Lovely keep pushing the price down.
My dad had the large Diesel version a leased car for 2 years ... dude, one felt like a king in there. So comfy, so serene ... Massively underrated
This is insane!!! The guys at Tesla would literally being speechless if they saw this, I mean this is the first car that really drives itself. Driver safety warning mind you...
Ferdinand Piech is banging his head against the lightspeed barrier about now.
normally i'm all about fifth gear but i have this really sneaking suspicion that if this had a bentley badge they would have been raving about it's "understated styling" and "luxurious, simple interior"
The Phaeton shares the same Volkswagen D1 platform as the Bentley Continental GT. That carries through the first 3 generations of the Bentley. That's nothing to sneeze at. I have personally driven the W12 Phaeton in the gorgeous Piano Black paint job. It's a lovely beast. I was invited to feature my Volkswagen 20th Anniversary Edition GTI directly behind the VW Phaeton at the Manhattan premier outside the W Hotel in Midtown. P.S., the W Hotel was awful. The Phaeton was magnificent.
Unsubscribed from this crap.
G Dressler,Doug and Top Gear are some of the people who properly review this car
Those Campagnolo boot hinges should be in a museum....👍
Looks like a larger version of my Passat. C'mon VDUBB!
Fuck fiftgear! Give it a 9 or 10.
I hope Volkswagen makes a newer version of this car... I want to buy it!
I have loved this car since it was released, brilliant car, even the 3.0tdi great car, it has all the luxury of a Bentley at a fraction of the price. It doesn't deserve the bad review these guys gave it. Cmon you could talked about all the good points guys. It's a cracking engine, the same engine in the Bentley continental. I need to buy one some day. I'd love the Bentley but the maitance would kill my wallet.
that car is amazing !!
the phaeton is an amazing car。so stable so quiet.
This guys don't understand the point. That car is one of the greatest pieces of automotive engineering in the world ever made and they say it sucks (rofl). That's really stupid and nonsense evaluation. You guys have no correct criteria or reasonable criticism ability you should close the show already.
I think the car is beautiful. I would buy one if I could afford. I like the idea of going a little incognito, but having a v12 that no-one knows about.
"Audi does it better" - well... but... Audi is VW...
Your crew is so deep in the shit you guys probably couldn't collectively save enough to buy a 2006 model of this car
Are you high? VW phaeton w12 it’s a wonderful machine 😍
Germans made Phaeton, English made Brexit
I saw one of these on the road for the first time yesterday I was surprised to actually see it
I have that quack ringtone. But only because I haven’t put in the time to put in my ringtones to my new phone. Which I got 2 years ago.
Amazing piece of engineering!
The review of the car was the usual 5th Gear drivel but the conclusion was spot on. This car simply wasn't in the same league as the competition.
If you actually own one and drive it normally over huge distances you realise that this is one of the very best saloon cars ever produced. It's the matter of design in depth, by one of the greatest car engineers ever, that makes it utterly seductive, superbly comfortable and truly a thing of complete beauty. These people are a bunch of silly excited children behaving dangerously and incapable of understanding this fabulous car. What a pity. But the joke is on them. Let them 'enjoy' their fashionable cars and leave this wonder to the connoisseurs!
this car is identical to the flying spur, the only thig which is different are the exterior styling. one of my all time fav.
Why does it still feel like critics are banging VW for even _trying?_ Never appreciated the 'harumph' attitude surrounding what was and still remains a great car. Though truth be told, the Phaeton was state-of-the-art for a short time in 2004, but competition has long since left it behind.
Clearly the point has been missed : if Volkswagen never created/built the Phaeton, it's highly likely that the Bentley GT and Continental Flying Spur won't have existed.
I'd definitely choose it - used one of course - over a Rapide (only seating four people), Rolls Royce (use your imagination), Maserati (questionable customers service, reliability), BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S Class.
Hope I'll be able to drive it one day!.
It looks like a big Passat? Won’t complain there. Thats a handsome car.
The interior design was a bit dated this late into the Phaetons production but they’re missing the point. The Phaeton is possibly the most well engineered and well equipped car ever made, also whilst the interior design may be a bit drab, the quality is exceptional throughout; I’ve got an Audi A8 and the Phaeton feels even more sturdy and well built than even that car.
You gotta be fucking kidding me... Germany, you still got some Heinkel bombers laying around?
Omg... that car is more special then any of its rivals... god damn i am disappointed in these three
2005 I would give it a 9/10
Today a low mileage at 10-14k dollars still a 8/9
Haha "Mercedes does it better " what!? This is 10 times better than Mercedes! One of the best engines ever made w12 based on a Bentley and they have the nerve to not respect it! 5th gear comments are simply based on marketing , brand snobbery and not simply being honest and real.
+David Lock
You wrote: "One of the best engines ever made w12 based on a Bentley"....
David I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but It's the Bentley platform there is modeled over the Phaeton D1 platform, with the VW Phaeton D1 (Typ 3D) from 2002 to 2016, then came the Bentley Continental GT (with the D1 platform) from 2003/2004 to present, then the Bentley Continental Flying Spur (again with the D1 platform) from 2005 to present, that is the vehicle with the complet D1 platform, but the powertrain was/is used in many other vehicle, such as (beside the Phaeton, Bentley Continental GT & the Bentley Continental Flying Spur) Audi A8L, Bentley Continental Supersports, Bentley Bentayga, Spyker C12 La Turbie, Spyker C12 Zagato, Volkswagen Touareg W12 and some prototype & concept cars such as, Audi Avus quattro (concept version only), Spyker D12 Peking-to-Paris (prototype version only), Volkswagen Nardò W12 Coupé (prototype only), Volkswagen GTI W12-650 (prototype only) & Volkswagen W12 (concept car), and in many variation from 414 bhp to +600 bhp, but that was a little sidetrack... :-)
But D1 platform was made for the VW Phaeton, and the used on the Bentley Continental GT and finally used to the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, but in the end, it's all VAG, so I'm actually surprised by this platform not being used on many other VAG models... ;-))
And as you, I would take Phaeton over the Mercedes, every day of the week, simply because its a much better car, with a much better build quality compared to the Mercedes.
Is fifth gear from UK.? This car is better then there broadcast, utterly disgrace. Motorist profession speak the truth about the level of engineering and appreciate this masterpiece. Fifth gear speak there mind, because they just bunch of drivers not an expert of engineering.
Never seen a fifth gear episode until now. What a shame, it is no wonder why this show was nowhere near as successful as Top Gear. Phaeton is an amazing car.
One of the worst car review I've seen in my life, they've completely lost the point
the cruise control system is fantastic
*Regular car reviews has entered the chat*
When was this review done originaly?
I was looking for a review, not a random phone call challenge
When are you reviewing Audi A/S/RS 7 facelift?
They just whine about all the wrong things but actually the interior is on another level and it has superior build quality to alot of competitors. As a used car it is perfect with a V6. Just DIY some repairs and you will be rewarded with one of the most special F segment cars ever for its price.
We need to see them reviewing a Bentley Continental Flying Spur...
...what?

Like the Phaeton D1 this is the best luxuary sedan ever biult. No doubt. The great Ferdinand Piech gave his engineers at the end of the 90s the order "Built me the best sedan ever made" Until today, not only for me, the Phaeton W 12 is the best luxuary sedan ever produced. This is undisputed even among hardcore Mercedes fans. Hopefully the Phaeton will come back under the new CEO Oliver Blume, both as a W 12 with E-Fuels, and as a electric version.
Yup yup yup correct
I certainly hope it does make a return. VW was out for world domination back then not like they are now.
@@Jushwa Absolutely right. VW was back then on its way to total dominance worldwide as the proud leading brand. Since "Dieselgate" are only small rolls baked. Unbelievable and sad. May better days come again with the new CEO.
I guess this proves the point that image and style matter more than quality and engineering.
Why VBH would say Audi A8 is better when they actually share much of the same tech is strange. I guess its down to the fact that nobody wants to pay 82k to be seen in a VW. Not that its actually a bad car.
VW Phaeton will always be remembered as "The car that killed Jörg Haider"
by you maybe. Many don't even know who he even was, let alone remember him, lol
Basel Kader Well most Austrian and Neo-Nazis will do...........probably,
The Mossad and the CIA killed him.
Isn't the Audi A8 W12 (as seen in The Transporter 2 and 3 ) it's distance identical twin.
I would call this car a "gentleman's express", refined, discrete, anonymous and really fast. My only hold back is VW dealers, parts, and service. It needed its own badge.
Oh come on can you not so mean to a car like this
it is a shame the v6 version of this car was discontinued(i mean, yea...all of them are of course discontinued by now, but still, the v6 is something i still would like, the rest is to overkill for me)
5th gear! forget about me subscribing after that debacle!!
This is not fair...it's one heck of a car..really discreet and well built..
everyone else: This car is a tone more technically advanced than the Mercedes Benz S-class of its era yet for half the price I think money well spent
Fifthgear: Nah we cant be like everyone else otherwise they will think were copying top gear so let's say we hate it.
V10TDI is only 0.5 sec behind W12 lol
Loads more torque
Phaeton rules the world 😎
So, you get in the car, talk about the cupholders, then self-drive it at 100 mp/h while making phone calls, and give it a test score? But where is the test? Did you do an actual review of the car? Also, at 1:19, is that opinion based on the cupholders?
What? This car should be reviewed for what it really is, high quality luxury car, and way better than BMW.
This is the most well engineered car in the history of mankind and you guys are hating on it? And none of you gave a reason for your low rating.
Quite simply a stunning car. Well engineered.. can do with some new sheet metal though and upgrade to the cabin.
