My daughter here in Alabama said that your videos are the best made vids on RUclips and I agree. I am looking to build a forge and start doing some blacksmithing, I am 49 years old but not to old to learn something new. Keep doing vids. Sorry to hear of your accident but I am gladd you pressed on. I too was in a bad accident and have memory problems but I don't let it get me down. I raised my daughter by my self in spite of all that happend to me. My prayers go out to you John...
Thank you for keeping this alive. I could never do this myself but I'm glad someone does. I had no idea the insert for the blade would be as small as it is. In a world were things are disposed of after use and we are taught to run away from anything even remotely resembling nostalgia, there will always be a few people who refuse to conform.
this video let me know the beauty of blacksmithing and also a great post rock band. I keep coming back to watch this video and still love the camera work, editing, atmosphere etc... everything
Great song and the timing with the music and Johns strikes, especially when he blamed his artists Mark were so perfect. Glad he recovered. Enjoyed the video so very much.Simply loved the video and the titles descriptions of would his was doing.
Well I have an Autine American felling axe and it is by far the highest quality and craftsmanship I have ever seen. I work hard for my money and was apprehensive at the price point initially. After considerable research and a bit of overtime I made the decision to place an order. I must say I was not disappointed! The handle alone is a perfect melding of form and function. Beautiful grain of an excellent orientation for durability. The delivery was actually earlier than originally promised and the customer service was excellent as well, with an update near completion, along with pictures detailing the grain selection of the handle. They went above and beyond meeting my request and I will not hesitate to order again. To be able to have such talent and skill available in making a very personally crafted tool at such price is of great value to me. I will cherish this fine tool for many years to come and would like to offer my personal thank you to all of the fine people at Autine who made my purchase possible. A Toast to the Best, M. Smith Mississippi U.S.A.
I can't think of a video on RUclips that I have enjoyed more than this one. Thanks for sharing. I expect that I'll be ordering a Forestry Axe from you before much longer. Good luck on your recovery.
hot metal is so calming to watch get moulded into shape... blacksmithing is like therapy too me. the metallic clanking of metal on the anvil, watching the sparks illuminate unseen areas, and the warm glow of heated iron.
Thank you so much for posting this video and showing your craft. I am so very happy that you have recovered from your injuries and can continue to forge. My son was just watching your video and said he want's to be a smith when he gets older. I was planning on building a small propane forge - and now I will do it for sure. Thanks!
Incredible. Truly you are an artist. I still can't believe I am going to own one of your axes. Thank you. I hadn't heard about your accident, having only discovered your work recently, but I wish you well and am glad the forestry forum community was there for you. I am going to join there if for no other reason than that.
that was awesome mate, looks like you have made a few of them in your time, Every tool you were using looked like it was designed to do the job you wanted it to do. Keep them coming
Hey, i'm a British kid of 15 year of age, and i've been looking up how to do things without the industrial age and machine just in case everything collapses and we have nothing BUT these old skills. Your video has been EXTREMELY helpfull, and, in fact, more helpfull than most others, as you use as few "extremeties" of mackinery as possible. Of course i understand the use of the automated hammer (i know that may not be what it is called) but i can still see how to do it with any manual hammer.
I'm trying to figure out why 30 people disliked this video??? I'm calling you out,, please explain, not asking for trolling just a real explanation this was real good
Probably because they ordered and payed 50% in advance for an axe that should be ready after 7 month and after 8 months they did not received yet and when you write to autine they don't even answer. customer care FAIL
Unfortunately that exactly what happened to me. I made a Payment over 9 months ago by paypal, the 22th of march for a splitting axe, and they said that they needed 6-7 month. 2 months ago i tried to contact Autine more than once to have an idea about the delivery and they never answered. So, I guess that I have been fucked up by mr Neeman.
You are a true craftsman and a artist I find your works of art a true masterpiece my thoughts and wishes of a fast recovery from your accident ! God bless
I've watched the video and read the comments and I believe that every one is allowed to have an opinion, and mine is that is is a beautiful axe and I'd be proud to own and use it whenever the opportunity arose. Beautiful job and well done that man.
Nice Job Janis!! I have to say that I am one of the few people that I know that has had the chance to hold one of your axes...the American Felling Axe FF001. I shaved the hair off of my arm when I was at Jeff B. house last summer. Thanks for posting the video! Rooster
Hello from a Canadian forge. Excellent punch and drift on the air hammer! Your video was well done and the music not overwhelming. Your descriptions were nice , I would have liked to hear you speaking about the piece more, rather than reading it. Overall a top notch vid!
Wow, you are an artist mate, I just watched those 13 minutes in awe. I have added it to favourites and hope soon that I can purchase a piece of art crafted by you. Sorry to hear about your accident and I wish you all the best in your continuing recovery. Stay safe.
John, I hope you have recovered fully and have returned to your passion of making incredible tools, your truly inspiring! I have to admit I am a little jealous, I would really like to learn your craft and bring back the renaissance quality in my life also. Keep up the great work, I would like to buy some of your Kitchen and Axe products in the near future. God Bless, Jeff
Nice video! I guess that if you made a full length video of the total process with no skipping, we would still love to watch it. Would be great as a background video in these december days:)
For the first time in my "internet life" I feel that I have to create a RUclips account to thanks and congratulate someone. Sir, your work is one of the most beautiful and exciting thing I've ever seen. I always felt that I would have loved to be a Blacksmith in an other life but damn, thanks to you my motivation to learn this art has increased so much ! I would love to see you work with my own eyes one day. Congratulations from France. :) ( and sorry for my bad english ;) )
P.S. Latviski veidoti video ar subtitriem angliski būtu vēl kolosālāki ;)
You are a true Master Craftsman, an inspiration to us all. Thank you so much for sharing. Thumbs up and subd and when I can afford it I will buy from you not GB. For all you haters, every work of art is different and has it's own flaws. If you want stamped out production copies go elsewhere and whine about it. This guy is the real deal making them one at a time. I'd be proud to own and use one in my camp.
I am truly amazed at the care and passion you and your team have put into such simple and incredible tools. I am glad to hear you recovered from the accident quickly. You have amazing friends and you are such a wonderful human being! Keep up the great work! I am ordering my father an axe and a small knife for Christmas hopefully. I am hoping that your ordering program will be up and running by then. I am a chef in America and I would love to buy one of your chef knives as well. You ROCK!
That was the coolest video I have seen in a long time. I could watch you do that for hours. Great job you have such great skills. Thanks for the video I have just started getting into blacksmithing and don't know much about it.
I love this. I want to become a blacksmith and especially want to learn how to make all sorts of axe's and hammers. I'm glad you're doing well sir- and I dont lie when I say this, this video touched me. I know the music did a lot of it, but around 1:33 when the flakes start falling off, and something about that and the whole fire heart of that axe head being forged- as poeticly mushy as it may sound, really made me well up. I love the pinging and the creation of this, it's so breathtaking. I want to do this. It's on my bucket list.
A mighty fine work, clearlyl presented and, sadly, a rare chance to see a blacksmith performing. The hand, the eye, the brain, the heart, and knowhow, are so precious and (almost) forgotten. Please think it over when you buy a cheap tool at Walmart! Hand forged tools last a life-long to be transmited to the next generation as a treasure...
dude amazing video. im trying to learn this stuff. where can you buy that automatic hammer. bro do more vids. and all you ppl that hated this should be put in the forge im sorry but this was great. teach us how to sharpening blades including swords. thanks for the video give everything you know on blacksmithing please. once again great video
are you born as a blacksmith? you need to make more videos about techniques, reviews, and other things! and help blacksmithing hobbyist around the world! Keep working, you are AWESOME!
This was a great video. I like that it was long enough to really show the steps well with text to explain everything. Some of the music was a little annoying. I would have preferred no music and a voice over explaining the process. I liked hearing the sounds of the hammers.

As a former metal worker myself, I bow to your skill and expertise.
Many blessings.
I'm very glad that people like you are still around us..Top class mate, top class...Good luck ;)
Best axe forging tutorial by far.
Its great to see a true craftsman at work still doing this in this day of age.
Forging is an art that everyone of us should be taught! Absolutely beautiful.
Amazing! Salut from Latvia! Good luck to You Janis and thanks to Forestry Forum.
With Best Wishes,
Sergey from Liepāja.

awesome crafter you are! thanks for sharing how a proper axe is forged.
this video let me know the beauty of blacksmithing and also a great post rock band.
I keep coming back to watch this video and still love the camera work, editing, atmosphere etc... everything
I saw this video a year ago and a year later I still think its one of the manliest and amazing video's I have ever seen.
Great song and the timing with the music and Johns strikes, especially when he blamed his artists Mark were so perfect. Glad he recovered. Enjoyed the video so very much.Simply loved the video and the titles descriptions of would his was doing.
Thank you for keeping this craft alive. That was a beautiful and useful tool you produced.
As an aspiring smith myself you are an inspiration, and an amazing smith. I wish you luck and good health.

The is no sense of satisfaction that is greater than making something the old fashioned way.
Cowboycomando54 "old fashion" oh really? He used power tools i dont see how this is old fashioned think again bratha

Im sure you do
wow i didn't expect john to be so young, experience usually comes with age but he is already so talented. Imagine Johns work in another 10 years time.
You are a true craftsman and a artist I find your works of art a true masterpiece my thoughts and wishes of a fast recovery from your accident ! God bless

God bless you, man. you make wonderful axes and i hope you make a full recovery from your accident!
Unbelievable quality and superb design. Simply without competition, everything is made to perfection
This was a really great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot for this video, it taught a great deal of forging to me. Gotta love your awesome workshop too. Greetings and congrats from chile
It takes at least 5 hours to get the axe to the stage you can see in the end of the video!
Then there's the handle and shetah making....takes a while
So making an ax head is not all that time consuming... is it better to spread the work over a couple of days?
Beautiful work, liked!
Really nice video man, the images are great !
The music is incredible, you made me discover a great band !
John, I hope you have recovered fully and have returned to your passion of making incredible tools, your truly inspiring! I have to admit I am a little jealous, I would really like to learn your craft and bring back the renaissance quality in my life also.

I Like that you Forge weld in a high carbon Steel Edge, not something most others do and is a very nice touch.
you are a true craftsman in a dying profession, keep up the videos I enjoy watching
I really love this video, since I saw it I realize how many love tools!
