Acer is back with a new Predator laptop -- the Triton 300 SE. With a solid spec list and extremely competitive price, will Alex be impressed or is this just another "gamer" laptop to fill store shelves?

My favorite thing about this laptop is the keyboard layout. Full sized arrow keys is always nice to see.
95W TGP on RTX 3060 is considered mid range. Most powerful laptops can go up to 140W in boost mode for shorter periods of time until it overheats (boost mode usually adds +25W so in general use GPU should hit at least 115W). Usually if you have charger below 200W in laptop you can know that you have weaker version.
20W difference in normal mode and 45W in boost should give in average above at least 10% performance gain.
PS. Also I heard that RTX 3060m with 130W+ can outperform weakest RTX 3080m models.
@@etiennebsm692 3060 with 115-130W beats a few of 3070m. There are some games in which it beats the desktop 3060. It also beats the desktop 2060 Super any day of the week. It gets very close to 2080. Both 3070m and 3080m will win with VRAM capacity in all titles that use it a lot.
My laptop has a 3080 and it's power supply is 280w so at least I have hope, looks like its 150W on the video
@@etiennebsm692with the right Vbios and a bit of luck with the silicon an oc 3060m with 130w can easily beat a 95w 3070 when not looking at the vram usage as far as my results are correct tho xD
It's a thin gaming laptop. Not expecting it to be as powerful as thicc bois. But honestly it's enough if you want to play just casually. Not like you're gonna max out those games most of the time anyways.
@@joelconolly5574 Yes, but such high caliber RUclips channel should do more research/be more honest/informative to viewers. Saying things like: "I think it's one of the most powerful versions of GPU but don't take my words for granted, I'm not 100% sure." is highly misleading.
I bought the Acer Predator Helios 300 back in 2020 and its held up pretty well. It had the same plastic and metal fan configuration and the metal fan got off balance and started making a horrible grinding noise so I replaced it with a fan from Amazon around $30 for 2 fans. So if the other one goes I already have a replacement. I just bought a bunch of upgrades for it, a 2.5" SSD, an extra NVM.e it had 2 slots and one was empty and upping the ram from 16GB to 64GB. I definitely like that it was so upgradeable with all the upgrades and the replacement fan it puts around the $1800 range.
I got an Acer Nitro 5 for Christmas and it is amazing, probably not compared to some of the computers that y'all review and build, but I love it. Merry Christmas Everyone!
7:24 I thought my computer was about to catch fire because I could hear my fans through my headphones until I released that was actually how loud the laptop in the video was 😭
Wew, that UGreen hub looks actually super good. Bought it using the link. Great vid!
I have the BestBuy 500SE version of this that I picked up earlier this year. I love it!
Glad to see they gave it a good upgrade from last year's model, I have last year's 300se with the i7 11370h which is its main let down of it being a good quad core processor, the ram is a nice upgrade GPU and chassis are almost identical same with the odd fingerprint placement.
Sorta wish I waited the yr for this model and its substantially better cpu
i’m in the same situation as you
Alex has been creative with the segues lately and I am absolutely loving it
I wish acer would revive their Aspire Gemstone series. I had one more than a decade ago and it's still one of the sexiest laptops I have ever seen.
Aspires in general were pretty stout, i had a e5-774g. I gamed on it for 5 years and the only thing i changed was the hdd; upgraded to a 2tb ssd, and recently i did a repaste and heatpipe upgrade. Dropped the temps 13°C, id still be using it if i didnt build a pc this year
There is no such thing as a sexy laptop from over a decade ago.
@@jay-uo2bi luckily there is something called opinions
@@jay-uo2bi Sony's PCG-Z1 from 2 decades ago would beg to disagree 😉
@@Sebazy Definitely unique and way ahead of it's time but I still don't think it's any where near as nice as a current age lappy.

What happened to the conversion of units to the metric system? In the past they always did it! That's the second video in a row with no conversion at all.
conversion is for convirgins
They're barely putting in any effort in this review, let alone converting units to metric.
what's there to convert? the size of the laptop? stop being lazy and do the 10 seconds of research on your own.
@@bigdubyuh7901 screen sizes are measured in inches everywhere, maybe they meant weight. But which one is easier, every hundreds of thousands of international viewers googling it themselves, or the editor of the video googling it once and just adding the number on the screen?
@@ufokkenwotm8 Thought Shortcircuit is a unboxing not a review channel??
I had the 2019 version of the Triton 500. Build quality - 8/10, was and still is the best laptop I own. If only its motherboard didnt crack after hitting its back on the ground too hard after falling with it being in my backpack. Loved the laptop ngl. Thinking of buying another one cuz it was amazing
Get the 500SE if you can, really good computer
Merry Christmas Linus media group!!!
i had an acer aspire desk top back in the day that had the speakers built into the monitor and it was green. THOSE were the days. These new acer machines are pretty cool.
Bro I can hear the fan from the computer through the video.
I was about to comment the same😂
Yeah holy shit that fan is loud 😅
Gaming laptops... same noisy thermal throttling junk every time. I don't know how people can use them. They live alone and always play with headphones at full blast?
@@Glotttis Why would I use my gaming laptop at home? Obviously they are for people who wanna game while travelling.
@@Glotttis mines different, it thermal throttles but does so fairly quietly
Bruh these speaker comparisons are always hilarious
I currently have a Nitro with a 17" 144hz display, GTX 95w 3060, and a Ryzen 5800. I bought it a year and a half ago or so - and it was a great price for the specs(I paid ~1200 for it.) It feels a bit cheap in some aspects (it was cheap...) but it is understated, not flashy, and performs very well. It was a much better value for the money than the laptop it replaced (Dell G7.) It is the second Acer I have owned, the previous being an ancient Acer V5 Aspire which is a 12" touchscreen laptop that is at least 80-10 years old at this point (and still works....)
Rtx*
I think the 2021 version of Nitro has thermal issues.
@@ciaojay7025 Mine hasn't had any at all. Never gets anywhere close to throttling. The Dell G7 it replaced - that things was horrible thermally.
@@ciaojay7025 2021 asus had it.
But not acer as far as i know.
@@raka9220 oh so it's just the Asus Tuf from 2021 right?
My experience with the only two acer laptops I've ever had in the family(new ones, post-ryzen era):
There's a chassis-intrusion-switch on the motherboard that goes faulty easily. Cleaning it doesn't seem to fix it. Makes the acer laptop auto hard-shutdown after a few seconds.
Had to mail back both laptops when they eventually messed up and wait a loong time to get both back. But yeah, they're fun laptops when they work and ours are still in service and it's about to be 2023.
I just like pointing out annoyances that are seemingly resistant to being 'fixed at home'
thanks for sharing man! and happy new year for u and ur family
Nice video, cherry on top was seeing how yellow your MBP screen is running :)))
I would love it if you reviewed the Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 15.6" I have seen it and thought it has a pretty good price for what you get, but would love to hear your guy's take on it. Loved the video as always!
tysm!!
That international warranty is great as anything bought in the US is much cheaper than in the UK and means my trip to the ERRF show next year means I can buy this laptop at a much cheaper price than the UK and still have a warranty
I really wish you would do videos on 2-in-1s, like ones with decent art functionality. It's rare to see one featured on LMG and even more rare that they have a dGPU
There should be a thermal paint for the plastic or metal case that would change color based on the heat of the unit, so you can see the thermals..
Merry Christmas
I love it has full size arrow keys.
Merry christmas sweet linuses
11:14 Mac is on another sound level definitely
Definitely need some more HP laptop reviews especially Victus and Omen ones.
95 Watts is actually pretty low for a 3060, it can go up to 140w
Thats for the desktop variant, laptop variants tend to go lower due to power constraints.
@@senorcheesy9661 higher end laptops like the strix g15 had the 3060 boosting up to 140w (115+25w dynamic boost)
Yes its performance is pretty awful for the price. But then again, this is Acer.
@@senorcheesy9661 The Lenovo Legion 5 had a 130W RTX 3060, and it's cooled pretty well.
@@silversrayleigh1399 I have one, even with the performance preset and with the GPU oc in the bios turned on, it barelly goes above 65C with factory thermal paste and 130W real power intake.
Great screen, nice
Had the previos version with the 10750h and 2070mq. Very good for the money !
Friendly request to include metric units for those of us not fluent in freedom units, otherwise great video!
I remember the turbo buttons on the Win98 PCs on our computer lab back in the day.
Just picked up the 16-Gig model for only $970 (after tax) from Best Buy. An absolute steal and am very happy with it so far.
Trackpad fingerprint reader is a throwback to the late 2000s/early 10s Sony Vaios.
I'm happy with my Lenovo Legion 5 that I got for $950. Only 16GB ram though but it is upgradeable.
ive loved this one for a while as a thin and light, underrated razor 14 compeditor and acer puts things on sale so much its probably gonna be half price soon
It is today at Best Buy which is why I’m watching this lol
@@LittleByrdEee same
They have a i7 12th gen 16gb ram 512 storage 165hz lcd display for 899 at Best Buy. Is this better than a MacBook Air m1 base version ? Was thinking of selling mine and getting the specs mentioned.
@@XPuregaming15 Did anyone answer your question?
@@curiosityredpill7030 no
My opinion on the fingerprint placement: Placing the fingerprint reader at/in the trackpad provides way better UX and reachability than placing it in the power button where it provides only better looks/aesthetics. Obviously, this is for people with more use of the fingerprint than just logging-in one time.
Happens a lot of times that I've to reach to my Macbook's fingerprint when I keep it on the laptop stand but doesn't happen with my Acer for same.
I'm very interested in seeing your guy's take on the Acer Nitro series. My last one was great. Chonky, but had a 2.5 drive, sata m.2, and sodimms all user replaceable.
It's on sale at best buy right now for $999 so I'm probably gonna buy it!
I still have an Acer Predator Helios 300 2017 model. Still runs well.
tech tip for 1:17 putting that many stickers on a laptop screen with an oled panel will decrease the amount of time before screen burn-in sets
I've just bought the Predator helios 300 with an i9-11900H and a 3070, the laptop is a beast of a machine for the money. My only complaint is the 3200 ram, it comes with 16GB out of the box which is adequate but needs upgrading and task manager says there are 8 slots on the board for some reason (there are only 2). The Helios, 17.3" version, cost a touch over GB£1200, this is the same as my GL702VM cost 5 years ago, which is a good price and leaves a little bit for a ram upgrade and maybe some extra storage further down the line. Excellent value for money though!!!!
Is some of the ram soldered? It may be reading soldered chips as individual slots.
Damn, this laptop looks so good and well built. Acer seems to be amping up their laptops.
it feels like a solid aluminum block , feels stupidly sturdy tbh, i love it
Hat Films' advert for this thing was so damn funny
I have Asus Vivobook Pro, 1620p 120 Hz 600 nits OLED panel and it is great. Core i5 12500h along with RTX 3050 work reasonably well and in silent mode, it is silent. Bought it for 900€.
Merry Christmas everyone ❣️🍄
ASUS A15 TUF Mine is the R7 6800H 3050TI but they have some that are slightly better retailed for just under $1100 but goes on sale frequently for 699 which is what I got it for. That is the 2022 models at that just purchased it December 17th.
I clicked full screen at 0:05 and my heart stopped for a second😂
More people need to know about deals like open box sales..I got my laptop which is the Maingear Vector Pro,for around $1000.
Marry Christmas
The trackpad would honestly be a great place for a fingerprint reader.... if it was totally flush and had no perceivable seam. But it's not like putting it anywhere else as it is here is somehow difficult, so it's baffling they did it this way.
I think the best spot is probabaly rhe power button
@@devisals it sure is great on phones
@@hotfistVODS I agree
where does your hand go after turning on the laptop? By that logic it is the perfect place.
Is it uncomfortable when you are typing where it currently is?
I'm just so glad I've bought this before it sold out, or I will cry for the whole 2023.
Different but still amazing to see
Acer bought 12 years ago still going and great computer..
Alex reviewing laptops is my favorite LMG content
Oh my god, that macbook speakers was absolutely perfect, I wish acer one day have something equal)))
PREDATOR BUTTON -- It overclocks the system and then puts your name on a list.
the new model Vector GP66 HX - 12U ,thats an awsome unit
Windows modern standby rant is missing, WAN show didn’t talk a lot about it due power outage.
When Alex comes in at work already high on new electronic smell :P
I currently use 3rd Acer laptop in a row and I was never really disappointed in quality, except for a terrible paint job on my Nitro 5. I'd say solid performance, solid quality, can recommend.
Acer always has a mixed bag for me. Their choice in materials is usually pretty good, but the mechanicals and support structure are hit or miss.
Much cheaper than predator line even though they have the same specs
@@DigitalJedi I guess my first Aspire had rather poor hinges, so I managed to twist them over the years, but that was also not even a mid-range laptop (I think it was 5350?). Other than that I am pretty content with performance and all.
that fan is going
I just bought the acer nitro 5 an515-58 with 12700h 3070 ti 512gb SSD 16gb (swappable) and QHD IPS 165Hz screen and comes with a 280W power adapter. it is a beast with games! but needs headphones to overcome the fan noise XD
At this point I'm pretty surprised that Short Circuit doesn't have a dedicated PC for recording gameplay.
Man, gaming laptops have come a long way if Alex says this is "on the cusp of portability". When I bought my Clevo brick in 2017 i was amazed that there was a whole 1060 crammed into merely 5 kilos! And the battery lasted an eternal 45 minutes. Plus the fans produced a whisper-quiet 80 decibels.
For future speaker test I think you should make sure both laptops are either on the desk matt away because I feel like that affects the sound
No lie I bought this for my 5year old son for Xmas lol he’s on it right now spooky
Reminds me of my Asus GA503 minus the fact that I can upgrade my RAM and have more IO totally underrated laptop
phew..that was close at the end 😎
10:55 dolby atmos tends to be better for making peripherals sound a bit better, as slightly better sound from trash speakers just mean slightly less trashy sound.
Next laptop suggestion from me is 'The lowest spec' model of Asus Tuf Dash F15. I want to buy the model but it is over priced in my country and from some reviews I learned thet the screen brightness is very low. Besides that there is probably just a stick of 8gb ddr 5 ram. And finally I don't have enough money to buy it....:)
3:46 HMMMMM those stickers must have added a little bit of weight there...
Gaming laptop I just got for Christmas today has a 240 watt charger lmao, the thing was monstourous
I love this channel, just some classic quick reviews. (That they can get sponsored which is nice)
Holy shit that sound quality difference
Bestbuy exclusive laptops are a hidden gem if you have never noticed them before. they will come with less storage but will be so much cheaper. I've gotten 2 in the last 6 years and just update the ram and storage later on and have saved so much money.
speaking of stickers.
we made 3 purchases from LTT store over the last year and in each we received a bunch of stickers that we don't use.
that's basically landfill trash.
they should only be included if asked for at the time of order.

Merry Christmas Everyone at LTT/LMG/Shortcircuit/The lab & Luke
Yes, CEAPER laptops please!
Acer is on a roll
Where are the metric measurements for us Europeans ?
You used to put them in edit, would appreciate if it came back.
Alex keeps the Night Shift mode on? I don't have any words...
Once USB C can support gaming wattages that's going to be a gamechanger for laptops. On my G15, it's nice to be able to chuck a 100 watt USB C charger in the backpack just to top up during the day if need be. But to get the max performance out of it, you need to usb the barrel plug and that thing is massive. Plus they're expensive to replace so I only have one (might should buy a 2nd to keep at work though.)
Having everything be USB C is amazing. So much so that I'm in the market for a new toothbrush and have been looking for one with USB C lmao. It's very much not a thing. Considering ordering one from Xiaomi straight from China just because then I will never have to worry about losing the charger lol.
wait, what's the holdup.. i thought the spec was already updated to go up to 240w.. 48v * 5a?
9:10 "FPS-es" it wantses the frames per secondses 😂
At first I thought that even as an esports player I would still rather take the OLED because response times will make that 90 Hz feel like it's so much more, but no VRR killed it right away.
My household has had 5 Acer laptops so far. A mix of low-end to mid-range laptops... They were all filled with faults.
Ram stick dead, HDD dead, battery dead, screen/hinges fell apart, certain keys on the keyboard stop working all at once throughout the day, and bios update somehow disabled the mousepad. This all happened within 0-3 years.
Maybe their high-end stuff is more reliable, but I'm never ever getting an acer ever again.
Uploading on Christmas Day? And a Sundayyyyyy??
this is the most audible fan noise of laptop review I ever watch and hear
Love your sound comparisons. At first, always like "it's not that bad", then you pull out a macbook and the feeling changes to "it wasn't even close"

It's like noice cancelling headphones are required for using them comfortably.
@@sebastianjost This was the main reason I built an SSF instead. Not being able to customise fan curve, undervolt etc without lots of third party stuff is a shame
