I hope this guy has great health and wellness throughout his life ! Actually I hope he never dies!!! Guys like this are gems of the human race, full of benevolence, caring and loving! Keep beaming it up Scotty!!!!
I remember doing numerous maintenance jobs with my dad on all the vehicles he owned over the years and its a life experience im passing onto my daughter as she grows as well...we both miss him alot he passed away 8/14/2015 RIP DAD
Thanks to all the old men that passed their knowledge, and values. I can't think them enough,God bless them. I can't wait to see them again. I on,y wish I would have appreciated them more, at the time. They live on through the tools and knowledge they gave us.
Same here, man, on both counts - my dad also passed on 8/22/15, and my brothers and I all got some level of mechanical knowledge and certainly modifications bug, lol.
I have been working on my vehicles since 1970. I'm not a professional mechanic but I know a lot about most systems on modern engines, transmissions, etc. I just subscribed to Scotty because I just learned about DOT 5.1 brake fluid. Thank you Scotty!
I’m glad you told the truth about DOT 5 brake fluid. Many guys with older cars that aren’t driven daily swear DOT 5 is the only way to go. Because it doesn’t mix readily with water, if/when water gets into the system, it can collect at a low point, like a caliper. That water will, over time, cause corrosion.
Hey Scotty, just got my first car a few days ago and, I’d like to thank you for so much knowledge you have passed on to so many of us that are not car savvy, that first car video you made really saved me from falling into a money pit! My father and, I really enjoy watching your videos together, keep em coming!
In Scotty we trust. I love having all this information about cars. I’m not a mechanic but want to know about cars. I can’t tell how many hours I have watched Scotty.
My favourite brake fluid is made by a brand called Bendix, its dyed blue so its super easy when you're doing fluid changes because you can literally see the fluid change colour to blue so you know its the fresh stuff, also good for figuring out exactly where leaks are coming from
My brake fluid boiled once. Foot went straight to the floor coming down from about 80mph quickly in my 300zx turbo. Learned to flush it out every couple of years and use good fluid from that point on since brake fluid absorbs water like a sponge. Got close to death that day!
well thats what you get for riding like an ass. Brake should never reach that level on normal driving. it seems you were going full douche on the highway switching lanes like crazy.
il Lock + no. Actually I was on a racetrack. I'm a driving instructor also. The brake fluid was contaminated with water. good try trolling and being a miserable human being though. Do you have anything constructive to add to any car related issues or do you just assume everyone drives like you. And I know you are that aggressive driver. Everyone who bitches about them is.
Brad. I've always subscribed to the theory that DOT 3 is fine for the street and DOT 4 is for the race track. I understand that your fluid was contaminated with water and that led to the failure, but tell me what you were using, DOT 3 or DOT 4?
Jess John + not at all. They sell test strips to see how much moisture is in there. Will use them on every car in the shop. And it's so cheap, we just usually throw it in as part of a 2-year or 30000 mile service. If it's fine, leave it alone.
Frank Howard + this was many many years ago. When I was 16. I failed to properly change all the fluids before I had a fun track day so I paid the price. Back then it was most likely. 3. This would have been in the early 90s. It was terrible and I should have known better. And I agree with you on that 3 and 4 I just use what the car calls for. You can never go wrong. Just make sure it's not full of water. That cap is left off for 5 minutes it seems like it absorbs it like a sponge.
I have flushed, and switched my older vehicles to DOT5. Silicone really preserves the system in rarely driven vehicles. But Scotty is correct, it does not work in "most" ABS systems, it is slippery, heavier viscosity, and slightly compressible.
Not really. denatured alc. dry air, and even a modicum of attention to detail. Anyone that finds it hard to do should have their hood welded shut, and stay away from tools.
Yeah, but you know what they say - better safe than sorry. I don't know how are the prices in US, but here where i'm from, Dot 3 isn't really any cheaper than Dot 4, so while Dot 5.1 is still considered expensive premium fluid, there's no need to run Dot 3 anymore, not even on old Pre-Dot 4 cars. You never know when you happen to drive down steep hill with lot of braking involved and you certainly don't want to risk boiling your fluid and loosing brakes just to spare some 2% on retail price...
I'd say unless you're doing a lot of downhill/mountain driving or you're one of those people that like to drive with 2 feet in an automatic vehicle then 5.1 is completely unnecessary in a daily driver.
A friend of mine was trying to clean up brake fluid after a wheel cylinder failed. He was using gas which would not work. I told him its not a petroleum based, that brake fluid is water soluble just hose it off. Well after another 1/2 hr, he finally did and it worked. Being an engineer he can't stand being wrong, but after a while he admitted he didn't understand. when I told him it was glycol based he just stared at me. It's one of the reasons brake systems need to be flushed every brake job. Yes I know hardly anyone dose that, but they should.
This is good advice, appreciate your videos! Been cheated one too many times by so-called honest mechanic's. By watching your videos I have been able to do some simple maintence to my 2006 Chevy truck and identify somewhat mechanic scams! Thank you!
Clean and not offensively designed comment here! Love your knowledge Scotty! Using it each and everyday now. DOT5.1 sounds great but I am sticking with DOT4 since I drive like Miss Daisy anyway. 🤣
I use DOT5.1 brake fluid. I found out from my research of brake fluids that DOT4 or DOT3,brake fluids are better for braking during cold weather in winter season.Yes,I actually read lots of stuff about car fluids before any purchase.
i remember when I 1st saw this video I went straight to auto zone and I asked them if they had it and they just looked at me like I was stupid as if I just made it up . ... A week later they have Brembo and Motul brand 5.1 brake fluid
I flushed my brakes fully , even removing the master cylinder. I used DOT3 from 99cent store partially as I ran low as I was finishing. 2003 Focus. Works fine. I also use full synthetic from there too...various reputable brands...$2.99/Qt. Car runs great.

great video... you answered a question I had (could you use DOT 4 in a car that calls for DOT 3) and showed me that there is an even better choice... next time I flush fluid I'm gonna put 5.1 in

This is the best and most informative explanation of the type of brake fluid that I have seen and it is relevant because I have to change the brake fluid on my pickup truck.
Oh my god. I love this.. This one I subscribe to. It's like watching somebody in New Jersey talking about a hit job but he's talking about brake fluid. It's perfect. Thank you sir
"Silicones are polymers which include any inert, synthetic compound made up of repeating units of siloxane - a repeating chain of silicon and oxygen; so silicones contain silicon." Correct! Love your videos, Scotty!
I used to own a Porsche that I used to drive pretty fast at times and would sometimes boil the brake fluid in my front wheels, necessitating that I bleed them to get the air bubbles out. This was even with the highest quality DOT 4 fluid I could find so I did a little research and found a slightly expensive German fluid called ATE Super Blue Type 200. This stuff had a minimum dry boiling point of 536 degrees F and worked great in my car, no more having to bleed the brakes. There was a companion fluid that was identical but was amber-colored that I used when I flushed my brake system, usually once per year. The different colored fluid made it easy to see when I had flushed out the old fluid. Unfortunately, the government has banned the use of Super Blue in this country.
Scotty I love watching your videos. It's gotten to the point where my girlfriend is getting anoyed lol. Heck I'd love to win the brake fluid I hope I get chosen.
Not a mechanic by a long short but, after watching this video, I sure feel like one!!! I now understand what all this “DOT” this and “DOT” that means! Thank you Scotty...!
Just rebuilt my brakes; new calipers, rotors, drums, shoes, pads, springs, the works! Sadly, having some judder in the front end. E brake is fine. Gonna bleed again, but think I'll use DOT 4 this time. Thanks!
Synthetic brake fluid will last longer and protect your internal seals better than using conventional brake fluid. Also synthetic Dot 4 brake fluid is a great upgrade because it flows better at colder temperature and it also protects your seals better and keeps the fluid from boiling because it has a higher tolerance to heat.
There are products advertised as DOT4 that will out spec the 5.1 products. It's mostly a game of minimum standards, and where one begins it doesn't necessarily mean the other one ended. I usually use Motul RBF600, but at the suggestion of a few others I will be trying Castrol SRF next season.
redneek24 after you open it any unused fluid gets wasted because the seal on the bottle is broken and it allows moister to get in and render it useless.you dont want moister in your brake system
Most vehicle braking systems the hydraulic lines are dead ends the fluid only moves a little. Just look at the bore and stroke of the master chambers, that's the volume of fluid that is moving back and forth in the lines. This is why brake fluid can boil. Rotors and pads get hot. Heat is transferred to the caliper by conduction. Fluid in the piston chambers heats up and boils making a gas which is compressible.
Love this channel.been working on cars since I was 14. Learned a lot about how to save $$ here. Never knew but always wondered about the types of brake fluid. Scotty’s the best!
Yes. The 2 mix fine, but because it’s mixed you get a slightly lower boiling temp. than you would if it were pure dot 4. It’s just the 5 you can’t mix because it’s silicone based.
For classic cars I believe it is better to use DOT 5 Silicon. I have used it on my TRIUMPH SPITFIRE MK3 1970. In addition I could not resist the temptation and i used it on my SKODA YETI 1.8 (4X4) MODEL 2012 equipped with ABS for 4 years now and I do not have a problem.
Does that 5.1 brake fluid work on old Trucks as well? Like a 40 year old truck? I know you said ANY modern car, but this particular Vehicle isn't as modern as these new vehicles. I just wanted to be sure. Plus where can you get this brake fluid from?
If you can put all new hydraulics in, including wheel cylinders, calipers, master cylinder, hoses, and metal lines, silicone (dot 5) is the best choice. You will never have to change it again and the silicone keeps the rubber parts of the system supple and young. DO NOT put dot 5 in a system that had dot 4 or below previously, as they don't work well together. Only use it if the system is brand new and never had anything in it. Dot 5 is safe to use in old cars with no ABS.

Yes!! I need Dot 5.1 . To stop after I rew up my engine.
Rev it up in neutral.
That's going to be 10 million dollars via PayPal thank you very much.
DOT 3 should be just fine for most "normal" drivers. If you do a lot of excessive or hard braking, then definitely use DOT 4 - 5.1.
Yeah, but you know what they say - better safe than sorry. Did that really happen, lol?!
Even though, it’s been 3 yrs. Since this was posted, I appreciate your information on brake fluid about the differences of brake fluids.
I flushed my brakes fully , even removing the master cylinder.
I used DOT3 from 99cent store partially as I ran low as I was finishing. 2003 Focus.
Works fine.
I also use full synthetic from there too...various reputable brands...$2.99/Qt.
Car runs great.
I was told 4 & 5.1 are synthetic

I have been using DOT 5 in my 1971 Triumph since 1997, when the entire brake system was replaced. It does not damage paint, and works just fine, as such an old car does not have ABS.

This is the best and most informative explanation of the type of brake fluid that I have seen and it is relevant because I have to change the brake fluid on my pickup truck.
Hey Scotty. Love the channel and content. Thank you for so much help you give in car repairs and maintenance.
Thank you again for the info, education & entertainment Scotty!
Oh my god. I love this.. This one I subscribe to. It's like watching somebody in New Jersey talking about a hit job but he's talking about brake fluid. It's perfect. Thank you sir
Me and my calipers are no longer in a relationship. We decided to brake up.
I'LL KILL A PUNNER!!!
"In 1924 hydraulic brakes were first used on mass produced cars. And yes that was before my time!" That made me and my dad laugh
Sh*t howdy. I’ve never heard of DOT 5.1. Your videos are the bestest cause you explain everything in less than 5 minutes
Sillicon and sillicone are very different
yes but silicon is used to make silicone, that's why I showed silicon when I was talking about silicone
"Silicones are polymers which include any inert, synthetic compound made up of repeating units of siloxane - a repeating chain of silicon and oxygen; so silicones contain silicon." Correct! Love your videos, Scotty!

Clean comment! My brake fluid is probably dirty and needs to be changed. Hey Scotty, how often should we change it? Thanks!
J. Hunto's Garage Check your owners manual, it may have that information listed.
Usually 3 years or 36,000 miles is good practice.

I'm liking you representing Australia with the penrite fluids. Use them for all the fluids in my car, they work great.
I’m surprised this channel has 1M subscribers... I would’ve figured a lot more 😊
Scotty, ur vids are a life saver! Thanks 🚗💨
Scotty is awesome, never knew you could mix most brake fluids as they usually call for one type only.
Guess who suddenly needs brake fluid.. meee 😂😂 I don’t think I’ve changed my fluid in quite a while now.
DOT 3 or 4 is fine. Flush and fill.
Avais Hussain nice 👍 so you have black tea ☕️ in your brake system
I hope you changed it lol
I love your videos Scotty. You are amazing.

Hi Scotty, my buddy swears by DOT 5.1 for his track car
wow I never heard of dot 5.1 fluid before. way better explanations then tech schools.
I'll just use anti freeze for my brakes and radiator! Save a little coin🤑! 🤔Way I see it I need to start making these videos huh Scotty pimpin!
Gotta Stop & drop a comment for some of that Dot 5.1.👍
I do a lot of City driving because i work on the road and this brake fluid would come in handy! Thanks Scotty!
So, use dot 5.1 on the track?
There are products advertised as DOT4 that will out spec the 5.1 products. It's mostly a game of minimum standards, and where one begins it doesn't necessarily mean the other one ended. I usually use Motul RBF600, but at the suggestion of a few others I will be trying Castrol SRF next season.
So is the dot 5.1 hydroscopic still ? Being a mix like the others or deos the infunitum apply here as well?🤔
enrique torres no because, the base it's made from attracts some moisture. It does have a higher boiling point however.
Dot 5 isn't. Dot 5.1 hydroscopic. At least from what I've read.
Always glad to have Scotty Kilmer on my side!
how long can I store brake fluid?
To my knowledge, if the bottle is sealed it will last a long time. If it is unsealed, then i wouldnt trust more than a couple of months.
redneek24 after you open it any unused fluid gets wasted because the seal on the bottle is broken and it allows moister to get in and render it useless.you dont want moister in your brake system
I drive like a granny, dot3 plenty fine :)
When Scotty pops outta the hatch like that, Weekend at Bernie's comes to mind.... Am I the only one?
Love your vids Scotty! I need t buy some brake fluid actually lol.
DOT 5 does not eat paint if spilt like all others
Really appreciate the educated tips about the brake fluid. I am becoming obsessed with your videos.
What does NASCAR use? The rotors glow red and get so hot , the bead melts sometimes. Leading to tire failure.
I would think this is way over 400F ?
Most vehicle braking systems the hydraulic lines are dead ends the fluid only moves a little. Just look at the bore and stroke of the master chambers, that's the volume of fluid that is moving back and forth in the lines. This is why brake fluid can boil. Rotors and pads get hot. Heat is transferred to the caliper by conduction. Fluid in the piston chambers heats up and boils making a gas which is compressible.
So now where's the brake fluid flush tutorial?
Go on Amazon and buy a brake bleeder vacuum pump. You connect it to the bleeder screw and it vacuums all the fluid out. Pretty easy and cheap.
Love this channel.been working on cars since I was 14. Learned a lot about how to save $$ here. Never knew but always wondered about the types of brake fluid. Scotty’s the best!
So I can just switch to dot4 if I have dot3 in there? (90's car) - Also, clean non offensive comment, lol.
yes
Yes. The 2 mix fine, but because it’s mixed you get a slightly lower boiling temp. than you would if it were pure dot 4. It’s just the 5 you can’t mix because it’s silicone based.
Is 5.1 hygroscopic?
Bharath G yes. 😀
RoyalKingA73 internet
If you can put all new hydraulics in, including wheel cylinders, calipers, master cylinder, hoses, and metal lines, silicone (dot 5) is the best choice. You will never have to change it again and the silicone keeps the rubber parts of the system supple and young. DO NOT put dot 5 in a system that had dot 4 or below previously, as they don't work well together. Only use it if the system is brand new and never had anything in it. Dot 5 is safe to use in old cars with no ABS.
RoyalKingA73 40 year truck you can stop with you foot at side of the door you don't need break nothing jajaja
I believe DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are all interchangeable.
tootype2crazy didnt he ask about 5.1 ? NOT 5? You watched the video, right?
