Practice night for the Roaring Trowmen in the historic Llandoger Trow pub (en.wikipedia.or...) in Bristol, UK on 2nd October 2012.
Sea shanties, a tavern, a band of mates, a pint ... what more could we ask for ? :)
Well done lads.
+FangBanger since i cant sing, just a hot lass i can tap my shoes with!!!!!!!!!!
when we think of it, it's so easy to be happy
No no no no no no no. They did it wrong. Check out my comment up above.
Sporting wenches?
being at sea and hauling on the braces
Excellent 👋👏👏🇮🇪☘️👋
This sounds like I am in the middle of the singing, a part of the crew. I love it when people do it like this.
I know right! It feels so Immersive. Like we are having the time of our lives
Assassin Creed Black Flag
I remember this set piece in high school in Kenya "In Plymouth town there live a maid "❤️❤️
Did you sing it.?
Coincidentally I need the Plymouth one
I was in a boys band while in high school. Lukenya boys, in Kenya back in 2006. This song saw us make it to the national level in the music festivals. I sing it every other day since then.
Performed this piece in national music festivals in 2003 while in high school. From Kenya.
wow, a blast from high school past in the mid 60's! the men's chorus would sing this while the choir took a break.
"Should we go to a studio to record this?"
.......
"Or we could go to the Winchester and record this with a pint."
Winchester for the Win!!! XD
It always has to be a pint...
"nah.... pub?"
"pub"
XD
Caught my ear in the 1956 version of Moby Dick, and found my way here. Glad I did. Close my eyes and I can hear the gulls, and smell the salt air as the sailors weigh anchor in unison.
Thank you :) Any social media shares we can get would be appreciated. Tiktok is sadly beyond us.... #bandwagon :P
Same for me!👍
LYRICS:
In Amsterdam there lived a maid
Mark well what I do say
In Amsterdam there lived a maid
And she was mistress of her trade
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
I met this fair maid after dark
Mark well what I do say
I met this fair maid after dark
and took her to my favourite park
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
I put my hand upon her knee
Mark well what I do say
I put my hand upon her knee
She said: "Young man you're rather free!"
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
I put my hand upon her thigh
Mark well what I do say
I put my hand upon her thigh
She said: "Young man that’s rather high!"
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
I put my hand yet higher still
Mark well what I do say
I put my hand yet higher still
She said, “Young man, that’s quite a thrill!”
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
She swore that she’d be true to me
Mark well what I do say
She swore that she’d be true to me
But she spent me money fast and free
I’ll go no more a-rovin’ with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
And when I got back home from sea
Mark well what I do say
And when I got back home from sea
A soldier had her on his knee
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
A-rovin', a-rovin', since rovin's been my ruin-o
I'll go no more a-rovin' with you fair maid
Thank you! For creating this lyric comment. For some reason there's a lot more version of this song, and none of the songs I search have the same lyric. I was about to do this myself, but since you already did it, thank you.
You deserve a prize for this. Thank you a lot
@@shicrazy33 since your comment is a year old, I don’t know if there is any point in typing this, but I will any ways.
Many folk songs and sea shanty’s have hundreds of versions, because they were passed around and shared by so many people, that they have slight changes each time people sang them. The is led to the changes adding up to create many different verses.
@@tvdants2026 oh no thanks. I never thought of it as like an oral kind of thing because the song is widely used so I thought they all looked at one single original version. Hmm thanks
ru-i-in
Almost forgot to watch this today.
Thank you!
AGHH I LOVE THIS SO MUCH AND THEY HAVE *PERFECT* HARMOMY IN THE CHOROUS
After hearing this and other gems from these lads, I visited their site and purchased a download of their songs. I can say it was money very well spent. Fantastic effort all around.
Thanks! any social media shares or likes at the moment are appreciated! sadly Tiktok is beyond us and we are being left behind :P
We were in a pub, the Llandogger Trow in Bristol.
Those lads, they sung it well, that song.
Mark well what I do say!
Those lads, they sung it well, that song,
Can't stop tae hear it on and on ... :-D
Absolutely fabulous rendition,I always wondered the name of this song fromMoby Dick and now I finally know, thank you so much.
That's exactly what came to my mind the minute I heard this awesome song! For the age of that movie it still amazes me. And I love love Gregory Peck as Fletcher Christian.
This song puts you right out on the sea...EXCELLENT JOB, YOUNG MEN!
Nice version of this old folk song! Love and peace.
This one is better than the recorded version that is also on the channel. More depth to it, even if it peaks all over the place.
you guys are badass
In Kenya Schools, it was like this.....In Amsterdam, there lived a maid and she was tall and fair, her eyes were blue and cheeks were red and she had auburn hair....
Terrific. My mum used to sing this song.
So fantastic!!! I'm in a pirate mood tonight and was looking for classic seas songs, and this is one of my favorites, and this rendition is fantastic! Truly good singing, and love that it's at a pub!
As both a giant fan of shanties and someone who grew up within spitting distance of Amsterdam - absolute banger
I've been coming back to this video for YEARS now and it never gets old. Well done sailors!
Still coming back?
@@duck_alternate3530 Hopefully he is yes! :P
This is amazing
This is the nicest version I've found - and I've been looking! Truly in the spirit of the song! Could I get/buy a recording?
Yes!! It’s ok iTunes
We sang this in 3rd year at secondary school with certain lines censored. Still a jolly good sing!
We did a cd ... called Testing, still available.
I know that first and only at 1950ies Moby Dick with Gregory Peck. Nice to hear it here fully Version, good performance👍
A pure, clear voice is made here by you fine lads. To others I shall suggest ye warblings, and little doubt have I that they shall be accepting. Onwards with the song of the sea!
Thanks! any shares we can get would be appreciated!
@@brynstephens4062 Shares ye will have, and with them, the applause of the sea. Also, my woman will be harking for more. The lone voice I provide has scant worm to suffice a woman of such hungers. Give her yer voice, and with it will come a satisfaction that I alone cannot fulfil. Blessed are yer! And Godspeed.
Wonderful.
Thank you Dan :) any social media shares we can get would be appreciated!
i think i found my favorite genre of music
Gorgeous! Good lord I wish I could sing. Well, in tune and on note that is.
Roaring Trowmen were amazing at Fieldview Festival 2013! More please!

Thanks Ethan. any shares we could get would be appreciated! Sadly Tiktok is beyond us and we are being left behind :P
God I wish I could have gotten the chance to sing with you guys lol I love these songs
Used to sing this at school 60 years ago on Singing Together. Not quite this unexpurgated version though. Was my favourite (apart from Donkey Riding) and has, of course, remained with me ever since. You guys do it full justice!
Thanks Colin. ANy social media shares would be much appreciated!
If you think this is the unexpurgated version, trust me - there's a version that the sailors sang that I'll never sing in polite company ;) As Stan Hugill used to say, if you think about how rude songs could get, just imagine them ten times worse and that's what was sung aboard those fine ships.
Huzzah! Well done, lads. Wish I could have been there.
One of the best shanties I have heard. This, Leave her Johnny and Randy Dandy-O
excellent im speechless
Ahh to be in a pub downing pints having a group strike out into these tunes.

So, the guy went to sea to forget his ruin done by his girlfriend.
Hope you gave your grief a seamen's grave and went to search for new shores
ak220880 the song is originally about a whore, at least the way my grandfatger taught me and he was as much a sailor as I am. original line was "in amsterdam there lived a maid, mark well what I do say; in Amsterdam there lived a maid, a mistress of the whoring trade..."
Love This..............

I've seen different versions of the lyrics. This one is pretty good.
Tune lads... Tune!
A bristolian song sung by bristolian men in a bristolian pub in bristol.
Gert lush!
i have been to Amsterdam by ship 147 days at sea
Better than Assasins creed 4 version
I can't be the only one who's reminded of Phillip SH dancing with naked ladies
This is one of the oldest sea shanty’s known
