I bought Mage Knight a while back, and I would never have been able to get started without your good walkthroughs of the rules and gameplay! Played 6 games already (2 solo) and its so much fun! Keep it up man!
Thanks to your playthroughs, I tracked down an Ultimate Edition copy of Mage Knight. Last night I attempted a Solo Conquest, expecting to get reamed for my inexperience, but rather pulled off a crushing victory! Call to Arms + Delphana Masters, Bow of Starsdawn + Offering/Sacrifice, and 4 free movement points a turn from a diabolic admixture of his and Norowas's skills allowed Braevalar to wipe the white city in round 4, then spent round 5 carousing in monster dens and taking dragons on two-to-one, until the last possible turn of round 6, marching into the blue city with 6 cards in reserve! Without seeing you do it first, I don't know how this colossus of rules and variables would have ever clicked for me. Thank you for your years of making excellent content!
I am always glued to these playthroughs. Remember your Legends untold video? Would love for you to do a new series of the cave and sewer systems bringing two parties through in readiness for the Dark Sorrows expansion later this year on Kickstarter. Also More Lost Station please.
Nice replay - just got back into the game this time trying out as solo appreciate your focus more on your thought process than just simple rules explaining
73 plays in and every time I watch one of your videos, I learn something. (Usually something in my favor). I assumed the city bonus was for all units, not just the physical attack ones. Wow that can make a huge difference! Thanks again!
You are a bad influence :-p . The earlier videos encouraged me to pull out my copy of mage knight ...and played it for sixteen hours over the bank holiday weekend...(won 2 lost 1 ...drawing 4 chits that ALL had physical resistance for the final city stuffed me in the losing game) ... bought it after your first set of videos way back, have never regretted it.
At 19:30, I believe using your skill to reduce the attack of the fire mages by 2 doesn't actually make any difference? With three armor you take two wounds from both Attack 4 and Attack 6. The skill does work the second time you used it because by that time you've leveled up to 4 armor.
@@thapananawa8675 The red city adds brutal to Physical attacks. The fire mages have Fire attack so they don't get brutal. Incidentally, it's the same thing with the green city which adds poison to physical attacks. And the blue city only boosts the attack of defenders which are NOT physical.
@Lestrande thanks for your clarification. I'm just newbie here. And now I know why I lost 3 out of 4 games of solo conquest. I thought poison and brutal apply to all types of attack. I felt it was so difficult without earthquake and altem mage to assault city.
i only just noticed u have done more mage knight vids nice... its thanks to you i can play this to begin with. i play every monday and have only got 1 win in conquest so far lol
Awesome! Been waiting to see this game unfold. On the ice block/attack matter, I found it's easiest to just think I always need opposite. Enemy ice attack? I need the opposite - fire block. Enemy ice resistance? I need the opposite - fire attack.

19:33 Turning it from 6 to 4 damage doesn't really do anything though, right? You've got 3 armor, so take a wound (6-3=3), take another wound (3-3=0), and take no more wounds --> 2 wounds total. With 4 damage it's: take a wound (4-3=1), take another wound (1-3=-2), and take no more wounds --> 2 wounds total. Or am I missing something here? (I'm still new to the game, only played First Recon thus far)
that's right.. it doesn't... I just did it because I could :) When I play I am kind of a 'programmer' and do stuff step by step without always thinking about where it will end... lol !
Hi Ricky, thanks for this awesome series. I really enjoy your playthroughs. Would love to see more. Just a quick one about ending your turn in an unconquered city. Does it count as an unsafe site? If so, you need to move back to your previous position and take an extra wound. Can't wait for the next episode!
Great question Christian. When you fail to defeat a Fortified Site, like a City, your withdrawal is free back to the space you were assaulting from and you take no more wounds; HOWEVER, if the space you were assaulting from was an unsafe spot, then you have ended your turn on an unsafe spot and must follow the Forced Withdrawal rules and start taking wounds. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series, and thank you for your question. Ricky.
I actually asked this in a different video of yours lol. I appreciate seeing the answer here. How could I forget that withdrawal is free for assaults? Lol. I guess the - 1 rep cost is offset by the lack of taking wounds? Lol
You’re play through is quite relaxing to watch. I’m a beginner and tend to be slow making decisions so it’s nice to hear you think through your options and just go for it. One thing I caught, when you assign damage from the fire mages at 19:41, I think you would get 4 wounds because damage in the red city is brutal.
Hi Dave! thank you for watching and commenting; it's a great question actually: the Red city DOES provide Brutal, but ONLY to enemies with Physical attacks; the Fire Mages attack with Fire, not physical, so they are not made brutal. A good one to look out for ... Good luck on your adventures! R.R.
I'm enjoying this play through, as always, Ricky. Too bad that poor red city didn't have anyone to serve you a brutal physical attack. Oh, well. But question, at 20:49, you used the Vampiric Chalice to heal your wounds. Doesn't it only allow you to "discard" up to four wounds? I ran into that a couple weeks ago myself. I think it's more thematic (vampiric) to allow you to heal them, but that certainly makes the chalice more powerful than the other healing faction tokens from Tezla.
Yes, we got tougher enemies but they weren't brutal... yay! And yes, you're absolutely right: VAMPIRIC only lets you DISCARD wounds, not heal them. Good Spot ! R.R.
i have a standard version of mage knight i bought in 2015.... and indeed the colors of your crystals look much more vibrant. The colors in mine are flat and dull looking.
Just one camera, and yes, a 30 minute video is normally over 100 different shots, moving the camera, zooming in, then editing it all together. Now and again I crop post-production, but I avoid it because of the loss of quality. It's fun, but a long old job !
Have you ever played 4 player in this game Rick? I do with my group once a year and have to start around 10am usually finish around 11pm that night haha
I've not played. I set up at a convention once, to play 4-payer; we all looked at it and decided it was going to take out the whole session so packed it away again :d :D
@@BoxofDelights And at 2 players? Is it worth it? Someone in my game group says it could get quite messy with a lot of downtime(no surprise there, it's a complex game with a lot of thinking). He estimates that it could take 14 hours finish a game with 2. I just don't really like playing solo, in my opinion you have videogames for that.
Only the enemies with Physical Attack get given brutal; all enemies had elemental attacks, so none got given brutal. Tougher enemies, but at least they didn't get the brutal bonus ! We live to fight another day.....
Hi Rick. At the end can’t you move onto the crystal mine with your scouts and the artifact sideways? Alternatively you could use their ability to explore two tiles away to find that city.
I'm rusty but .. the damage dealing mechanic is .. for N damage, reduce it by the shields, and if non-zero take a wound, and repeat if its non-zero. So if its a 6 attack and you have 3 shields, you would take 2 wound? ie: 6 - 3 = a wound, - 3 = a wound, and you're done? You used the skill to reduce it to 4 damage ... 4 -w wound - 3 wound and done = 2 wounds So, with or without skill, still same outcome?
see 4:07 - I am recruiting from a refugee camp, so the Freezers cost 1 more.. which means I needed 9 total, so even with my influence of +1, I still needed 8; so Pure Magic alone was not quite enough.
So when you conquer a city, you can go in, fight as many enemies as you can, one at a time, and just leave before that last enemy wounds you? Or did that token Ricky used take away all damage the last enemy inflicted as he left?
Hi, no, you cannot escape their attacks; you must block ALL of them or suffer their attacks. But once you have completed your attacks, if any enemies remain then you must retreat back to the space you assaulted from.
"Wow this is good. Would be better if I had more crystals..." I mean, that's how I feel about *ever* hand in Mageknight. Would be better if I just had some more crystals...
you can set the city to whatever level you wish. The SCENARIO you are playing will tell you what it recommends the city levels be set to/ For example the Solo Conquest scenario says, "Cities: the first revealed city is of level 5, the second revealed city is of level 8." But if you want to change them to make the game easier or more difficult, you can do.
I’ve been playing it such that you need to place new tiles adjacent to two tiles, but you have a section just one tile wide. What’s the actual rule there?
The rule is, for Countryside tiles, place adjacent to two or more tiles OR adjacent to one tile that is already adjacent to two or more tiles; for Core tiles, they must be placed adjacent to two or more tiles.
2 players works well I understand, though I don’t think I’ve played beyond a day with 2. You can choose to play competitively or cooperatively, attacking each other or not. I prefer it solo,

I know it's old but I just wanted to point out what I believe is a small mistake: you cannot use Concentration with Shapeshift like you did to take down the fire mage.
