Well Eldred @Veloharmony I get your point when you say to purchase goods from reputable company who will back up their customers in the event their products fail them. Case in point, a few years ago I purchased a brand new Cannondale with a Fizik saddle. I got caught in a torrential rain storm while riding the Solvang Century in Lompoc California. The brand new Fizik saddle peeled apart and Fizik replaced it no questions asked. The saddle was only a few weeks old when the flaw occurred.
That's why I stay away from Alibaba and those other sites, because you can kiss your money goodbye, if you should have any issues.
Interesting. Yes for that money those pedals should last dang near forever lol they need to recall and redesign or use a different material. I am glad your customer service experience was good. Garmin usually has good customer service from my experience. I appreciate you sharing!
Agree. My cleats are outlasting their pedal. Dura Ace pedals I've owned had similar issues. The composites and carbon have their issues. I only use alloy bars, because carbon bars have failed catastrophically when I used them.
Well now this is a bit unsettling. I recently purchased a new bike and decided to go with the same pedals (Garmin Rally RS200). I'm glad you posted this video Eldred! This is one more thing to have to worry about. After owning Aluminum framed bikes, my new bike is all carbon and I find myself being very cautious with it. My new bike and pedals are barely two months old at this point.
Don't worry too much about the frame unless it has a big fall, it should be fine. The issue with all the composites including carbon, whether frames, wheels, handlebars, etc..they fail at their limits catastrophically; they don't bend like the alloys do. Other than that, with care they will be okay.
I actually have a pair as well have had them for close to a year, the only issue that i have ran into was the battery cover became loose and had to tighten, but I agree that i have never had an issue with returning an item to Garmin, from my Forerunner watches to the pedals etc. they stand behind their product. Great "review"
I had the loose cover issue as well. They shipped them loose on one pedal and after torquing you 4nm no more issue there.
The one absolute truism with Garmin, I’ve learned, is that for every single person that has had a positive experience with them, there are four others that have had nightmares… 😆🤷🏽♂️
I gave them hell on the phone and just made it clear that our contact points are not the area for speculative materials. Considering how quickly they admitted the issue existed, I believe that this is a far more common issue that we may ever know. That is why I immediately made the video.
I went to look at my pedals immediately after watching this video. So far they look okay, but I can see where the problem might occur. The entire backstrap of the pedal had a little play, in both pedals. I can see how merely unclipping could cause a potential issue. I also checked my Shimano Ultegra pedals (with no power meter) on the other bike for comparison and they also have slight play, but not as much as the Garmins.
That play you found, may eventually get worse. Keep your eye on it.
@@Veloharmony I will, thanks
Hi
Agree with you about Garmin customer support. My experience with a Garmin cycling Edge 530 problem and Garmin's response exceeded my expectations.
About the Rally RS 200 power meter pedals, I' considering buying a set and would like to know if you have been satisfied with their performance. Thanks
Thanks for sharing
I've been riding a set of these for 5 months - less than 1k miles. Today I noticed a clicking sound from crank area when climbing and when I got home checked the pedals for a source. The cleats are tight and show little wear. I'm seeing a lot of side to side play in the part of pedal that grabs the back of the cleat and am wondering if this is a prelude to the failures documented here.
Keep a close eye on it. There should not be any play. The clicking noise indicates a loose connection between the cleats and that pedal.
@@Veloharmony Also the same shoe/cleat combination doesn't make noise with the Shimano SPD-SL pedals that we used formerly.
How did you last set do? No more issues?
None so far.
@@Veloharmony thx mate. You made me doubt these garmins. But as they are out for two years now, they might be renewed soon.
@Veloharmony That’s not only a design flaw to the utmost but it’s extremely dangerous to say the least. There’s a saying we as cyclist say when referring to putting power in the pedals or stomping the pedals, could you imagine if you would’ve gone down behind that flaw, Garmin would’ve sworn up & down it was the riders error that caused the damage in the result of him or her crashing & not the integrity of their product. Three (3) times is far too much of you taking chances with your well being knowing that the material is not made for a powerful cyclist as you or even myself. Go with what you know works to continue your well being while out doing the thing you love which is cycling my brother📌
Agree. The third one is on the way as we speak. I spoke with their support and they claim that the failure is known, but not widespread. I told him they really need to do more testing before putting things out and reference the hookless rims that are causing issues with tubeless tires that are being put out by Enve and Zipp. I also told him that I ride only alloy bars because my carbon bars caused me to crash years ago and I'm never going back, so they need to find a better metal, unless they plan on frequently replacing pedals.
I wish the weight rating was higher. 231 lbs is quite low IMHO.
This does not look good. I was considering these but this got me thinking perhaps Favero would be a better option.
I’ve had FA’s for almost two years now and have had nothing but a positive experience… build quality, dependability, but more importantly, customer service…
Yeah, the customer service is good, but they really need to do something about the pedal bodies. They are not durable. The data is good but that composite material has failed me twice with two of their pedals. I sent it back today and they're sending a new pair. We'll see how long that lasts.
@@Veloharmony three (3) fails is not a good sign & you should steer clear of Garmin pedals. They may be good at designing computer’s but pedals are not their forte. Garmin is being greedy in trying to compete with the big dogs in pedals Shimano, Look, Time, & speedplay. Somebody’s gonna eventually take a fall and injure themselves sooner than not.
Those pedals have a similar issue that I ran into with Shimano's Dura Ace Pedals. They both use composite materials and basically cannot handle the load of the forces going through the cleats. I will see how long the new one lasts. The thing just failed with no warning like cracks or even creaking leading up to the incident. Basically a catastrophic failure, just like we see with Carbon parts.
@Veloharmony How has the 3rd set performed? Would you still recommend garmin pedals? I am considering the Favero Assioma Shi instead. Thoughts?
My Rally RK200 lasted only for one month and 2 weeks. One day they just stopped turning on. Garmin support says I will receive a new set in two weeks... or maybe more. I do not recommend Garmin pedals. Too expensive for the quality of the product.
Sorry to hear that. You probably got one from a bad batch. They replaced mine within a week after the pedal body broke. So far with their pedals they've performed consistently for me, other than the failure of the pedal body. Their customer service has been very good in handling the issues I encountered.
