  • Life on a Marine Corps Base, can't be compared to anything. It may not be how you think it is. Marine Corps Bases, house Marines, and that alone should explain it all. From Marine Base housing to life in Marine Barracks, there's no telling what may happen. I share my honest opinion on, What is Life like on a Marine Corps Base. Now I will say every base will differ. However whether you're at Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton, Twentynine Palms, Marine Corps Hawaii, or over in Marine Corps Japan, you will be able to relate to this video. Life on a military base but espically life on a Marine Corps Base is not what I may seem. Hopefully you like the video and as always thanks for watching.

I grew up and currently live on Topsail island. I recently got my DBiDS (base ID) for work on the base and i have to say. Living by camp lejeun my whole life and finally seeing the base inside was mind blowing. I felt like I was in a different country as all the stores and gas stations were military companies I had never knew existed. Along with the infrastructure of the base being much better than the surrounding towns I was impressed. I think you have valid points but I also believe your situation caused you to take it for granted as it was a surreal experience for me. No blame on you. thank you for your service! But I couldn’t stand one thing. Seeing Biden and Kamala in the mess hall!!! They gots to go!

Its all how you make of it...I enjoyed being at Lejeune living in the barracks as a single Marine. You have access to the beach and some of the best fishing on the east coast. You can even rent boats and kayaks right there at the base Marinas, or buy your own and store it there for almost nothing. Now I would never subject my family to base housing though. I would rather live off base, but as a single Marine, barracks all the way. The only thing I hated was thursday field days. I even enjoyed eating in the chow hall. It's all what you make of it.

So I'll admit you made some valid points. Honestly when it comes down to it you really do have pretty much everything on base, the gyms are pretty nice and depending what base your one has multiple ones with different things they offer. But personal I think when it comes down to it you have a grocery store, a px with decent things in it, gas station within a what 5-10. Coming from not having a grocery store within 40 minutes drive and have a "px" in 30 I think I love bases. As goes base housing I think I rather live on if I had a family safer and easier for a parenting stand point. Don't get me wrong I think its dumb there a rule for everything or times might be weird but with everything in mind I think its a good trade off.

I actually played football for the 5th Marines when I was with 1/5 in Camp Pendleton. You are right though, I didn't hear about no tryouts I just saw them practicing and joined on some random shit lol. Luckily it was right after a deployment so we had some down time. It was great, but playing in pads against grown men against other pog battalions was pretty crazy. POGs generally had more downtime and went to the gym more often while we were in the field. So as a grunt it was rough playing Football because I had to miss so many practices and pretty much only showed up as a starter on game day.

I was stationed at Camp Lejeune among many other bases and i can testify that in fact it is like a small town. Key word “small”. You have a commissary, movie theater, bowling alley, small mall, fast food restaurants, PX, liquor store, beach (specially at Lejeune), day care, HS, middle school, housing, stores, recreation centers, swimming pools, gyms (free), and much more. Of course you cannot compare it to Miami or Atlanta by all means but you do have in fact what you need. Also, you can always go out to town for anything else.

The only city feature on camp lejeune is Wendy’s and Taco Bell. The px and the commissary are pretty much the same as walmart or target. Everything else on base is ranges and swampy ass training areas. Jacksonville is boring as shit too. U can go off base and wait in a long ass line at smoothie king for ur peanut power plus that’s about all u can do in Jacksonville

I was stationed at Camp LeJeune 2 times in my 4 years. Jan-Jul 1974, after boot camp. Then on to Camp Foster Okinawa back to Camp LeJeune Sep75 to Oct77. We had NO Fast Food Restaurants, on the base like Wendys or Taco Bell. All we had was Snac Bars, PX and the traveling "Roach Coach" trucks from Jacksonville also Jacksonville had no malls. Ive been to LeJeune several times in the past 40 years, a lot of good changes. Also, we slept in open Squad Bays just like Parris Island. So I'd say todays Marines has a lot more than we had back in 1973 - 1977. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sgt...OUT

Also, you have to get approved from your unit to even go to college. Marines do find a way to go to college while in. I just don’t understand how they can find time. I mean, looking at camp Lejeune from the outside coming in, it can be considered a small town.
#1. The beaches are fun and on base not far from the barracks.
#2. The gyms aren't bad at all. There are enough of them, that is for sure.
#3. There is the commissary, & many fast food joints.
#4. Bowling, bingo 😅 and the lakes aren't so bad either..
#5..Fishing .. lots of places to go fishing.
Not as good a Pendleton but it's also better than 29 sux a$$

Im not sure if you have made a video on the question you asked but if you haven't it could be some helpful info.Congrats on the honorable discharge by the way

Join marine corps (or any branch you want) after high school. You can go to college for free if you enlist first. That goes for all the branches. If you want to go to college, the marines probably aren’t the best for that but it’s your choice. Do your research. Goodluck

(Skip to my other reply below if you simply want to know the general things that Marines do in garrison on base)
It’s completely your choice about what you want to do in life and I wouldn’t want you (or anyone else) to have any regrets about such major life decisions, no matter what you choose to do.
That said, I’d still personally recommend that you skipped the enlisted route and just go straight down the officer path instead (Navy ROTC to commission as a Marine Corps officer, or talking to a recruiter to do OCS while attending college).
Now I know that you probably don’t want to do that because you’ve heard that the enlisted personnel will respect you more as their leader if you were formerly enlisted your. While this is somewhat true to an extent, I want to dispel a common misconception that many people seem to have about this because I was an enlisted Marine myself too and I’ve seen many officers come and go.
So while it is true that _some_ of the finest officers I ever knew in the Marine Corps were “mustangs” (term for commissioned officers who had formerly been enlisted). However, some of the mustangs that I met in the Marine Corps were also very toxic @$$holes and they were absolutely despised by their enlisted subordinates, even despite the fact that they had once been enlisted too. From what I and many other people I knew experienced, you’re either gonna love or hate the prior-enlisted officers that you work for. It seems to me that they’ve been in the Marine Corps long enough that they’ve already found their own style of leadership and there is no longer an “in-between” feeling about them.
Alternatively, some of the best leaders I ever met were officers who had never gone through the enlisted experience in their careers and they were actually highly respected by their enlisted subordinates because they would lead by example with absolute modesty and respect for others, while also listening to the good judgment of their NCOs without letting ego get in the way. I’d also like to think that this was also probably because they had not been tainted by any bad “prior-enlisted experience” to make them turn toxic/arrogant once they had that level of authority over people’s lives.
So just because an officer was prior-enlisted doesn’t necessarily guarantee that they’ll automatically be a good or respected leader. Likewise, just because an officer was never enlisted before doesn’t necessarily mean that they can’t be a great leader. That said, some officers just suck in general, no matter if they were prior-enlisted or not.
Still, whatever you choose to do, just make sure you commit yourself to doing well at that and don’t have any major regrets about it.

Now with all that out of the way, I’ll try to assist with answering your question to the best of my general knowledge.
The basic jobs that a Marine does on a daily basis after completing all of their training depends on whatever one’s MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) they’ve been trained for is and these can all vary greatly from others. No matter what their MOS is though, they’re still expected to Physically Train (PT) with their unit and do whatever is required of them as a Marine, if need be.
So here’s a rundown of a bunch of them:
-If you’re in the Infantry then it’s a lot of waiting, cleaning, marching with a rucksack, and maintaining all your basic infantry skills because you’re expected to be the frontline fighters of the Marine Corps. (Marines need a reliable infantry to offensively fight battles and hold conquered ground under hostile conditions)
-If you’re in Admin then you’ll mostly be in an office handling documents on computers and working with people’s paperwork/files. (Marines have to get paid and be able to go on leave to keep their morale up)
-If you’re in Motor Transport then you’ll be maintaining motor vehicles in the motor pool or transporting Marines. (Marines need reliable ground transportation over long distances)
-If you’re an Aviation Mechanic then you’ll be fixing and performing routine maintenance on aircraft so that they’re able to get into the air again. (Marines need reliable air support that can actually be able to fly to their location in order to back them up)
-If you’re an Armorer then you’ll be in the armory making sure that all weapons/ammunition in the unit are functional, clean, and accounted for. (Marines need weapons that work and a steady supply of ammo to actually be able to fight)
-If you’re in Food Services then you’ll be cooking food for the whole base to make sure that every Marine there has at least had the opportunity to be properly fed. (Marines need chow in them to have the energy to do anything because all militaries run on their stomach)
-If you’re in Combat Camera then you’ll be behind a camera watching units do things and also behind a computer editing pictures/videos. (Marines need proof of the places they’ve been and the things that they’ve done, which further builds upon the legacy of their units and creates good PR for the public)
-If you’re in Postal then you’ll be in the post office on base handling everyone’s incoming and outgoing mail services and delivering packages to units. (Marines need their personal mail and important items transported safely and in a timely manner in order to help them function more efficiently)
-If you’re in Air Traffic Control then you’ll be watching and communicating to all pilots for them to be able to all take-off and land safely. (Marines need to know that their own air support or transports won’t crash into anything while they’re in the air)
-If you’re in Legal Services then you’ll be doing paralegal duties to help JAG lawyers with divorces, wills, powers of attorney, legal advice, and court-martial hearings. (Marines get in trouble, marry the wrong people, and need legal help all the time)
-If you’re with Cyber/Data Network then you’ll be the tech support on base to help everyone fix their computer problems if something gets broken or people can’t figure out their systems. (Marines need reliable computer systems with good encrypted communication and cyber security to get their work done efficiently)
-If you’re with Intelligence then you’ll be analyzing a lot of OSI (Open Source Information), mostly just the news/internet, to compile PowerPoint briefs for the CO to stay informed. (Marines need to know what’s going on in the world because any good/relevant information could potentially save lives or avert trouble)
These are all just several jobs I could think of from the top of my head that anyone can choose to sign-up for from the start of their careers and the things that they do on a daily basis, but there are also hundreds of other jobs as well that I didn’t list. There’s obviously a lot more to each of these jobs then what I listed, but you’ll have to be more specific as to what kind of MOS you’d want to do. That said, when you choose an MOS, you better be damn sure that’s the job you want because it will take at least a few years to move over into a different MOS or simply get out of the Marine Corps with an honorable discharge.
