Save yourself a step and put your stick of butter in the oat/hot water mixture. The butter will melt while you are putting together your other ingredients. This cake is really good with or without a topping. Have had this recipe for years.
My granny made this cake but we always called it the funeral cake!!! I would always ask my Granny could she fixed the dead person's cake!!! GOOD CHILDHOOD MEMORIES!!! Love u for this😘😘
My grandmother in law made an oatmeal cake for our Christmas dinner this year, first time I'd ever had it, and it was AMAZING! Watching to learn how to make it, so i myself can make one tonight! Thank you for sharing this a few years back! 🎀💚
Recipe: Wet: 1 stick melted butter 1 cup of oats 1 1/2 cups boiling water mix together and sit for 20 min Dry 1 1/2 cups of flour 1 cup of white sugar 1 cup brown sugar 1 tsp of baking soda 1/2 tsp of nutmeg 1 tsp salt 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon Mix the wet and dry ingredients, and add 2 eggs Put in over at 350 F for 25-30 minutes Topping: 3/4 stick butter 1/3 cup evaporated milk 1 cup brown sugar Bring to a boil and take off heat Add vanilla 1 cup of pecans 1 cup of coconut Pour topping on cake then put it under a broiler for 2 minutes
This recipe is very similar to the one my grandmother made for my birthday every year that she was living on this earth. The frosting was so delicious that I asked for "more" frosting each year. When my grandmother sadly passed and I had to make the cake for myself it was never as good as hers, but I still managed to eat the whole thing. Just to give you and idea of how much everyone loved the frosting, imagine increasing the ingredients for the frosting to match up with using 4 sticks of butter! The cake was baked in a 13x9x2" pan that had a 2" riser added to the edge of the pan just to hold in the frosting while it was under the broiler! Our family preferred using fresh pecans from Georgia when the cake was made. Thanks again for sharing your recipe. Greg McBride.
What you and I make from the same recipe as our Mum's, will never be as good as what she made. It'll be good alright...but not like hers. And your's looks great!!!
Thanks very much for watching! This is one of those old recipes that I think has been forgotten, but it is much better than any boxed cake mix that you can buy at the grocery store.
You might be able to get away with putting a Pyrex dish under the broiler if you have it preheated properly, but I shattered one once and I will stick to metal pans for broiling. Thank you for watching!
LOL @ Mom not appreciating a used already eaten cake. That;s funny. I have had this cake years ago, I have made it many times and have discovered I've lost the recipe. Mine didn't have the pecans in the topping, but I love pecans and think your recipe will be even better. Thanks for sharing this.
It's a Christmas Miracle, Mr. Greg! Kick ass lookin cake!!!! Not only should you not drop a cast iron skillet on your stove, NEVER drop one on your goober either! I learned that the hard way. LOL
I used to make this recipe about 25 years ago, then I got divorced and lost the recipe among many other things. I was fortunate to find the recipe again in a church cookbook that my mom had. Thanks very much for watching!
Oeh, this looks good! I will write this recipe down, convert to metric and surprise my family 👍🏻. (Evaporated milk... right, that would be koffiemelk here in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 )
Mate i enjoyed watching ur video, made me laff with ur re laxness with ur stirring and the mess lol I am off to make this cake, looks amazing , cheers.
+lemoncrinckles Thank you very much for taking the time to watch and comment on my video, lemoncrinckles! I had some problems and malfunctions when I made this video, but the cake turned out great and I had a lot of fun!
My mom use to make this exact recipe , except she just used a little regular milk and XX Sugar with some flake coconut, but she never heated that. don't forget to grease and flour the pan, so it doesn't stick to the pan- even a non stick one. Came from an old grey cookbook by Meta Givens in the 1940's. Broiler - Yes, don't leave it it may be done in about 2 - 3 minutes. I did that once. What a mess.
Thanks Ange! I love oatmeal as well. As I said before I don't eat a lot of sweets, but once or twice a year I like to make one of these cakes as a special treat!
I'm not a big fan of coconut myself. You could probably make the same topping and omit the coconut and pecans. I've never tried that, but it should be very good. You could also bake the cake and instead of using the topping, add some whipped cream or maybe some maple syrup. Use what ever you like and I think it will be very good!
I just saw a recipe that a lady used slivered almonds instead of walnuts. You might use non sweetened coconut if that is why you don't like the prepackaged stuff.

Can't wait to make for my mother in law of 93 years. What kind of condensed milk? Sweet? Also plain coconut or sweet? Thank you! Bunches!
You don't want to use sweetened condensed milk. You need to use evaporated milk like Milnot or Pet milk. I use sweetened coconut. Thanks for watching!

Looks so good! I would like to make it, but my oven doesn't have a broiler 😯...what can I use?
You could use a blow torch to brown the topping. I've never done this myself, but I've seen chefs on TV do it before. If you do this be very careful!
Mate i enjoyed watching ur video, made me laff with ur re laxness with ur stirring and the mess lol I am off to make this cake, looks amazing , cheers.

What would be a good substitute for the coconut and pecans? Because I do not care much for either.

Who is going to clean the stove . I hope it is not your mom .
I own my own stove. I make messes on it and clean it whenever I please. I'm 55 years old and my Mom no longer cleans up after me.
