    In this video:
    In 1970, everyone’s favorite orange roommate sang a song to his bathtime buddy. “Oh, rubber duckie, you’re the one. You make bathtime lots of fun,” cooed Ernie to his squeaky yellow friend. While the rubber duckie had been around for at least a century prior to Ernie and his mellow melody, this Sesame Street tune shoved the bathtime toy into the popular culture lexicon where it has remained ever since. From a chew toy to a piece of art to Ernie’s best friend (sorry, Bert), here’s the story of how the world got into the bath with the rubber duckie.

    When I was a kid in the 70's, my grandmother had that rubber Donald Duck car toy, that was shown in this video, in her attic. It was in a chest with a lot of VERY OLD toys (A lot of them were wood and metal) that me and my sister loved to get into and play with whenever we visited her house. Seeing it in this video brought back so many memories!

    There's a lot of misinformation and speculation presented incorrectly as fact in this video. The origin of the rubber duck is a lot more mysterious than you think!
    I personally own a squeaking, floating rubber duck toy made by the Sun Rubber Company in the 1930s. A similar-looking rubber duck can be seen floating in a bathtub during the opening moments of the 1934 film "Imitation of Life". They clearly existed for the purpose of being squeaky bath toys for children earlier than people think.
    Peter Ganine is often credited with the creating the first "modern" rubber duck probably because he submitted the earliest known patent in the U.S. for one. However, I think Dietrich Rempel was making rubber ducks for the Sun Rubber Company earlier than him and rubber ducks were also being independently invented in China by Lam Leung-tim around the same time as Ganine.
    I wrote a full post about this with a bit more information and imagery here:
    www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/517xxw/what_is_the_origin_of_the_rubber_duck/d7a8l8g/

    In the 1970s, ham radio operators, and possibly other users of VHF/UHF handie-talkie radios, referred to the removable (via a standard connector) short whip antennas, made of a coiled spring of wire coated in solid flexible rubber, as "rubber ducky" antennas. They were generally a few inches long (10 to 15 cm) and were almost always black, not yellow, but apparently the popularity of the Sesame Street song made the name stick.

    Awesome video! Mr. Weasley would be thrilled. Suggestion for a video: world debt. How is it that it seems so many countries are in debt? Are there any currently not in debt? Who are the debters? How do they pay it off? Interest rates? Do such examples exist (smaller figures used bc I don't want to fathom larger numbers): If Country X owes Country Y $600, and Country Y owes Country X $400, then do these cancel out? So County X owes County Y $200, and Country Y owes them nothing?

    I have a rubber ducky sitting on my desk right now. I don't plan on keeping it there, I will be mounting it on the front of my tricycle. I had a wooden ducky on my trike before, but somehow it bounced off without me noticing it. I looked for another wooden one exactly like the one that was lost, but I couldn't find one and had to settle for a rubber one. I got the idea to put a figurehead on my trike from a fellow on RUclips who had a green fish on his. A friend of mine saw my wood ducky and put a rubber minion on his trike.

    • @petergray7576
      @petergray7576 7 лет назад +1

      Another bonus fact 2: 40% of US federal government debt is actually owed by the government to itself. During the 1980s the Reagan and Bush Sr. Administrations covered their huge deficits in part by borrowing money from the Social Security fund. But this debt is actually just book debt, since one cannot owe money to oneself.

    Wonder if someone went back in time and found the guy working on the patent, and all they did was point at the duck and say "that will be your legacy, that will be all people remember you for, nothing else. There will be a giant version of this floating around Asian cities"

    The remains of rubber duckies have been found below China's Tiaojishan formation, where they date to 165-170 million years before present -- making them the oldest known birds.

    Bonus pt 2. Since US has debt based currency. As long as there is a money supply in current form there will always be a national debt. since the US Treasury increases money supply [in only one way] by selling bonds to(getting a loan with interest ) the federal reserve, a private bank. The money supply can also be increased by fractional reserve lending where banks loan out more money then they have reason why bank runs are possible. So with both these factor of our modern monetary system the national debt is impossible to pay back. the boom bust business cycle happens cuz of the fractional reserve lending the balance ledger wont even work out so shot gets f'd up for a lil. the size is so massive and all these new tools derivatives, futures, etc make it take more time but inevitable. what I find crazy is this is taught in econ 101&102 money has not been mastered(relative recently became fiat a commodity that has its own independent price supply&demand can't be currency) or at least def isn't implemented to help all mankind (bankers are the wealthiest & biggest buildings)

    At 5:59 he says the rubber ducky song came out in 1917... then shows a modern day color photo of what looks like a young man who created the song. That guy is at least 105 years old or so and looks like he is in his 40's or something. Lol.
