How Does Soap Work?
• How Does Soap Work?
In this video:
In 1970, everyone’s favorite orange roommate sang a song to his bathtime buddy. “Oh, rubber duckie, you’re the one. You make bathtime lots of fun,” cooed Ernie to his squeaky yellow friend. While the rubber duckie had been around for at least a century prior to Ernie and his mellow melody, this Sesame Street tune shoved the bathtime toy into the popular culture lexicon where it has remained ever since. From a chew toy to a piece of art to Ernie’s best friend (sorry, Bert), here’s the story of how the world got into the bath with the rubber duckie.

When I was a kid in the 70's, my grandmother had that rubber Donald Duck car toy, that was shown in this video, in her attic. It was in a chest with a lot of VERY OLD toys (A lot of them were wood and metal) that me and my sister loved to get into and play with whenever we visited her house. Seeing it in this video brought back so many memories!
Neat!
Mr. Weasley would love this video.
Haha, I would have never gotten that if I hadn't just started rereading Harry Potter.
Can someone send this video to Arthur Weasley?
There's a lot of misinformation and speculation presented incorrectly as fact in this video. The origin of the rubber duck is a lot more mysterious than you think!
I personally own a squeaking, floating rubber duck toy made by the Sun Rubber Company in the 1930s. A similar-looking rubber duck can be seen floating in a bathtub during the opening moments of the 1934 film "Imitation of Life". They clearly existed for the purpose of being squeaky bath toys for children earlier than people think.
Peter Ganine is often credited with the creating the first "modern" rubber duck probably because he submitted the earliest known patent in the U.S. for one. However, I think Dietrich Rempel was making rubber ducks for the Sun Rubber Company earlier than him and rubber ducks were also being independently invented in China by Lam Leung-tim around the same time as Ganine.
I wrote a full post about this with a bit more information and imagery here:

I just noticed the arms of your glasses must be the same colour as the greenscreen you're standing in front of. Cuz there are slits on the sides of your head where they go that magically turn the colour of the background.
Ellie F I always thought it was just reflecting color from the screen because of lighting and glossy glasses but you're right lol now I cannot stop watching the arms of his glasses disappear
Wrecker4488 I thought it was reflecting at first, too, but then he turns away from the background and its there still lol

When I first saw this video I thought it said "When Did We First Use Rubber Dicks?"
Honi soit qui mal y pense.
Harley365 Evil to him who thinks evil. This is the motto of the Order of the Garter, an honor bestowed for centuries by the British Crown. Google the phrase above, or google "Order of the Garter," for more details.
Allan Richardson Ya know this comment is about dicks right?
TheAtomicGoliath The translation means that if you have your "mind in the gutter," ...
The original post was about DUCKS. But I meant my reply on this thread in a humorous way. Sorry if it was a bit obscure.
It’s says when I first used ducks in the in the title see it I can it says when did I first use rubber ducks it does say it they
Your glasses are either very well camouflage or are being affected by the green-screen
Very cool youtube channel btw :D
0:40 Don't forget, "Scientific research device."
Toronto had a visit from the giant duck, I believe it was last year (?). It floated proudly in Lake Ontario.
God, I love your videos.
Especially with captions since English isn't my first language.
today i found out = smarter every day for non mouth breathers
Smarter every day is a good attempt to give mouth breathers a sliver of logic.
i like them, but some of their videos (like today) is real real real bad.
There's a great topic for Today I Found Out: Where dd the term 'Mouth breathers' come from?
I recently discovered "Today I Found Out" and subscribed.
Now my Recommended videos panel is mostly suggestions from your channel.
I don't mind.
“Tell me. What is the function of a rubber duck?”
I've said it once, and I'll say it again. I love this channel.
Grand Haven, Michigan hosts rubber ducky races every summer. Fun times.
Interesting video. :) I collect rubber duckies I have around 700 of them. It was fun learning more about their early history.
Joakim Hanze seriously?
700 is less of a collection than an obsession.
Yes I'm serious :) forumbilder.se/FBMS3/wp-20140717-19-57-23-pro

In the 1970s, ham radio operators, and possibly other users of VHF/UHF handie-talkie radios, referred to the removable (via a standard connector) short whip antennas, made of a coiled spring of wire coated in solid flexible rubber, as "rubber ducky" antennas. They were generally a few inches long (10 to 15 cm) and were almost always black, not yellow, but apparently the popularity of the Sesame Street song made the name stick.
I have that exact rubber duck at 0:23 , i could only find it at target in the baby section lol
Awesome video! Mr. Weasley would be thrilled. Suggestion for a video: world debt. How is it that it seems so many countries are in debt? Are there any currently not in debt? Who are the debters? How do they pay it off? Interest rates? Do such examples exist (smaller figures used bc I don't want to fathom larger numbers): If Country X owes Country Y $600, and Country Y owes Country X $400, then do these cancel out? So County X owes County Y $200, and Country Y owes them nothing?
"First vulcanized rubber toys" = ribbed for her pleasure
Forget the duck for a second. Imagine taking a bath in the same water that your dad, mom, uncle, five brothers and two sisters bathed in first.........
6:31 You speak Cantonese? how impressive, I live in Hong Kong and your pronunciation has the accuracy of over 90%.
I love this channel so much
Never got why they didn't let the cleanest family members go first
Michael Dante lol
in that era it was "dad's house" there for he would always go first.
the reason babies went last is because you did not want to risk the baby urinating or defecating in the limited water.
there's more rubber ducks in this comment section than i originally anticipated
That bonus duck was blown out of the water by one thing: the last 12 months
- Aeturnalis 2020.12.27
We had (in the 1960s) blow-molded yellow plastic ducks.
Arthur Weasley loves this video.
I have a rubber ducky sitting on my desk right now. I don't plan on keeping it there, I will be mounting it on the front of my tricycle. I had a wooden ducky on my trike before, but somehow it bounced off without me noticing it. I looked for another wooden one exactly like the one that was lost, but I couldn't find one and had to settle for a rubber one. I got the idea to put a figurehead on my trike from a fellow on RUclips who had a green fish on his. A friend of mine saw my wood ducky and put a rubber minion on his trike.
your pronunciation of maryland killed me a little, but in other news, i live right next to easton, so it was cool to hear that fact at 4:21
The rubber duck seems so entrenched in our culture that I would've thought it originated in the 1800s. I guess it only takes one century.
my town has a rubber duck festival. we dump tons of rubber ducks into the river and see which one gets to the end of the river first
Two things.
One, toys aren't just for kids in the tub.
Two, quack quack! lol
Here in Louisville, Kentucky, USA they release thousands of rubber duckies into the Ohio River every year. It's called the Ken-ducky derby. I'm not joking.
6:07 That's _not_ the droid you're looking for...
My daughter loves the Rubber Ducky song!
A couple of the richest men in the world, Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, have their likeness made into rubber ducks!!
Their Company, Berkshire Hathaway, bought a novelty company called Oriental Trading Company in Omaha NE that has hundreds of different themed ducks!
When you get rich & famous you can have your face on a duck!!! LOL!
We have the "Running of the Ducks" a rubber duckie race for charity

Ernie - one of the greatest philosophers.
you should do a episode about goodyear!.
I take it when you date squeaky toys' advent to the 1960s, you mean the 1860s, because the 1949 patent says the duck squeaks.
The fact at the end about the US Public debt, I think is wrong, we're well over 70% debt to GDP. I think we just hit 106%.
Correct. According to St. Louis Federal Reserve Database, we are 1t 105.05% as of the second financial quarter of 2016.
USA has the 7th highest debt to GDP 1. Japan - 229%2, Greece - 176%3. Italy - 132%4. Portugal 129%5. Belgium - 106%6. Singapore - 104.70%7. United States - 104.17%
JustinBobcat Another bonus fact: Despite high debt levels, the United States Government has always possessed positive equity. In 2011 when US government debt was around $14 trillion, it was estimated that Uncle Sam owned nearly $19 trillion in property, patents, government services etc....
Another bonus fact 2: 40% of US federal government debt is actually owed by the government to itself. During the 1980s the Reagan and Bush Sr. Administrations covered their huge deficits in part by borrowing money from the Social Security fund. But this debt is actually just book debt, since one cannot owe money to oneself.
so why is it called vulcanized rubber?? DID SPOCK MAKE IT??? LOL
if Vulcan is a indication that spock made something, did he make the Vulcan minigun?
Some say rubber ducks were created by the Mayans, or ancient Egyptians, others say that even now a lost flock of rubber ducks struggles against robotic aggressors out among the stars looking to the a place called Earth. Battle Duck Galactica!
"Toy Scholar" Now that's an interesting title
Well, you have finally convinced me to subscribe. You do make a number of errors of fact, none of them terribly serious, and I find the range of odd information interesting. Best of luck in future videos.
the song gose "so much fun"
shout out to my home. Akron Ohio Goodyear heights
I never owned a rubber duck. Instead, I used to freeze my toys and do some convoluted game of pretend that I cannot for the life of me remember. I think the water coming out of the faucet was a 'laser beam'.
Cortster I used to play with the foam and pretend ot was continents or stuff like that, it was like being the god of the tub, shaping foam landmasses.
Well, my bath toys consisted of plastic tumblers, Tupperware, and spoons.
28,000 rubber ducks and a giant rubber inflatable duck. They have started the invasion in baths. We never knew it was coming. It is too late now my friends.
5:42 that duck is high
"Bonus Ducks!"
At 1:33 you use what appears to be an old advertisement for Vulcanised soles. Could you share the source of this image with me please. I would like to know more about it.
Beaux Crook If you are on a computer, pause the video full screen, hit print screen to take a screenshot. Paste into an image editor like paint, trimming the sides, and then use Google's reverse image search for the origin.
The reason is asked is to try and get a date for the picture. The content doesn't add up. As far as I can tell the gentlemen is wearing what looks like a pair of low cut converse all star shoes. The white sole/toe cap variant of which didn't really exist until around the 60s if I'm correct.
Beaux Crook Well, sometimes you can track down the author through these searches. It just shows you who's hosting that image online. It's a great resource for online dating, for instance.
Beaux Crook - jackywinter.com/artists/tom-simpson
Pickles - I just asked for the desktop version of Google Images, and I was able to do it on my phone.
Wonder if someone went back in time and found the guy working on the patent, and all they did was point at the duck and say "that will be your legacy, that will be all people remember you for, nothing else. There will be a giant version of this floating around Asian cities"
... and there you have it, Mr. Weasley.
Arthur Weasleys favorite video
The remains of rubber duckies have been found below China's Tiaojishan formation, where they date to 165-170 million years before present -- making them the oldest known birds.
Is chilly really burning ?
My son loves playing with his rubber duck during bath time
Bonus pt 2. Since US has debt based currency. As long as there is a money supply in current form there will always be a national debt. since the US Treasury increases money supply [in only one way] by selling bonds to(getting a loan with interest ) the federal reserve, a private bank. The money supply can also be increased by fractional reserve lending where banks loan out more money then they have reason why bank runs are possible. So with both these factor of our modern monetary system the national debt is impossible to pay back. the boom bust business cycle happens cuz of the fractional reserve lending the balance ledger wont even work out so shot gets f'd up for a lil. the size is so massive and all these new tools derivatives, futures, etc make it take more time but inevitable. what I find crazy is this is taught in econ 101&102 money has not been mastered(relative recently became fiat a commodity that has its own independent price supply&demand can't be currency) or at least def isn't implemented to help all mankind (bankers are the wealthiest & biggest buildings)
Fun fact: debt of germany has never gone done in the history.
No its youngest to oldest. I have a teacher that her mom was the youngest and she went first.
At 5:59 he says the rubber ducky song came out in 1917... then shows a modern day color photo of what looks like a young man who created the song. That guy is at least 105 years old or so and looks like he is in his 40's or something. Lol.
Um actually he said 1970
Yesterday was Rubber Ducky day!
I like this.
Can you guys do a video about the Noble prize?

I have one of these and along with all the others I've seen, they are plastic, not rubber.
Someone send this video to Arthur Weasley
Uh... Did you guys mean to show Dark Tangent instead of the sesame street composer?
Isn't that Jeff Moss the hacker?
Bert already knows Ernie isn't his best friend. Ernie is in fact a terrible friend, and a pretty unpleasant person.

I stopped the video 12 seconds in thanks! Lol in 1970
