My theory as to who and what the "devil" is in Majora's Mask. It's referred to only once in all of Zelda, but makes for an interesting theory. Comment below who you think the devil is and be sure to let me know if you see any holes in my theory. After all, I'm not asserting that what I say is the absolute truth - just a theory :) Thanks for watching, and subscribe for more, my Hylians!

First off why would a grim reaper buy souls when taking souls is literally their job and they can do it without buying. Second off this could have easily been a goofy translation or *an artsy composer speaking figuratively* third off *how the fuck is he moving around if he’s in the grim reaper’s soul orb*

    • @Retroatron
      @Retroatron  2 года назад +19

All valid questions: As we can see with Gomess, he's not the exact depiction of the grim reaper that everybody knows. He's not simply a skeleton, but a monster of some kind. He summons bats as protection, has a large orb at his center, and gives off a red glow - things not characteristic of the commonly depicted grim reaper. Based on that, I think it's perfectly reasonable to assume that Gomess does not abide by the rules of the commonly depicted grim reaper or follow the same tropes. As for translation, the Japanese text says basically the same as the English text, some translating "akuma" as "demon", although it can mean both from what I understand. You could certainly make the case that Flat was speaking figuratively, but I chose to take it literally as it intrigued me and lent itself to an interesting discussion. Finally, a soul is different than a spirit. In Twilight Princess, for example, Jovani sold his soul to Poes who then broke it into fragments. Jovani, although soulless, was still able to physically exist and communicate. This would seem to indicate that souls are able to be taken/exchanged without actually destroying who it was taken from. In some capacity or another, people can physically exist without a soul in the Zelda universe. In this case, since Sharp was already a spirit when he sold his soul, this only allowed his *mind* to be corrupted since he was no longer bound by physicality. That's how I'd answer that anyway.

In game, I'd probably go with Skull Kid, seems the most likely candidate. However:...
Really, it's a figure of speech. More specifically, it is a nod to the blues singer Robert Johnson who, legend says, met the Devil at the crossroads at midnight, and sold his soul in return for being given an otherworldly talent for playing/singing the blues. This is why blues is often called "devil music."

Thanks so much! It was really the "sold his soul" part that made me rethink the Skull Kid or Majora theory, since neither of them strike me as soul-bargainers, just nuisances and destroyers. Once I remembered that there was a literal grim reaper in Ikana, the pieces started to fall into place. Although we know very little about Gomess, he still seems like the probable candidate for being the "devil".

Stone tower was very different from the other temples. It was hinted that the stone tower was a base of operation for an evil force that cursed Ikana long before majora mask began causing chaos. The Ikana family could have been the ones to seal tower to prevent the curse they suffered from spreading. Hinted at with the king telling link that he would need an army to beat the tower

I scratched that theory since I'm not sure that the Happy Mask Salesman would want to purchase a soul or what he would do with it. And since the opening of the Stone Tower Temple door is not connected to raising of the undead Ikana Royal Family members, it's not likely he was the devil that would be able to raise them. I think the Ikana area is the most interesting the MM because of the presence of an antagonistic force that predates the Skull Kid/Majora's Mask's actions. Interesting that Igos mentions that someone opened up the Stone Tower doors, rather than 'the masked one' or something like that. Also Pamela's father notes that he created his anti-Gibdo song after years of researching Gibdos, so we know that the undead in MM have been around for years in some form.

I know Gomess is designed to look like the Reaper, but I've always seen him as a Lich: a powerful undead who locked his soul to a physical object, with that object becoming the one thing that can kill him. Sound familiar? Gomess's orb is his Phylactery (the Lich's soul object), which is why he defends it so much. Also him being a Lich bypasses the logic of why a Grim Reaper would act as a Devil: He's not a Grim Reaper, he just looks like one.
    Other than that solid theory.

Grim reapers aren't evil nor do they really make deals in exchange for souls they've already collected as it goes against their job as guides to the afterlife. I always took Gomez being in the tower as part of the curse on Ikana as part of that "no reaper then no one can die" trope. But it's a video game and rarely do video games mirror 1 for 1 anything irl so it doesn't necessarily break this theory. we do have to defeat Gomez before beating the dungeon which could explain why everyone is still hanging around Ikana. Also, the idea that Skull Kid and the Devil being separate people is a theory I also had and glad to see I'm not the only 1. Sense you brought up Great Bay's pollution. You've probably already made a video on this, this is only the 3rd video I've seen and I'm watching them out order. But it's kinda implied that the Great Bay temple is a water purification plant. Meaning the murky waters are the Bay's natural state, though maybe not as bad as we see in game sense the water purifier is running in reverse

I do not follow either the substance of your first gripe with it being Skull Kid, nor the argument about it not being Majorca’s Mask by way of still existing after Twinmold (especially in light of the fact that it still exists after you beat Gomess), however the idea that Gomess is somehow central to the curse and may well be “the Devil” referenced is fairly decent and functions well within story. We know little enough about Gomess that it’s possible he was even the bearer of the mask-possibly even the one who brought it into the stone tower int he first place, sealing himself inside-which would explain why Sharpe knew of him and thought to go to him at all.
The question of the mask being sealed in the Stone Tower has always been fascinating and how and why it was remains an interesting question. To my mind, it was a case of someone had to put the mask in, and, much like Sauron’s ring of power, it seems the mask could corrupt by mere presence, so likely the bearer (like Frodo) felt their trip was one-way. Gomess being an ancient self-sacrificial hero driven slowly mad and twisted by the very mask he helped seal away makes a lot of thematic sense to me.

    • @Retroatron
      @Retroatron  2 года назад +1

Thanks for commenting, appreciate your thoughts! My first gripe was simply that there are two separate contexts at play. On one hand, Sharp had sold his soul to "the devil". On the other hand, Sharp mentions that the dead lingering in Ikana was "a trick of the masked one". The selling of Sharp's soul to "the devil" is not connected to the dead lingering in Ikana but, rather, "the masked one" (who most presume to be Skull Kid) is. This separates "the devil" and "the masked one" as being different people, as far as context suggests anyway. I'm not quite sure I understand the second issue you took, I never used the existence of Majora's Mask post-Twinmold as evidence against Majora being "the devil". My point was that if Igos du Ikana and his servants can still live after Twinmold is defeated and Stone Tower Temple is completed, then they're not connected to the curse that came from the opening of the Stone Tower Temple door. The curse that came from Stone Tower Temple was likely the one that rose the dead in Ikana, so this would mean that they were risen by some other means (i.e. the selling of Sharp's soul to "the devil"). I really like your comparison to The Lord of the Rings, that's even a video I thought about doing as there are many similarities to it in Majora's Mask. That's an interesting idea you propose, however, that Gomess may have been a Frodo-like character in that he ventured to dispel an ancient, evil relic. Thank you for watching!

Idk maybe he possesses the capabilities of making deals with those around him? Not a farfetched idea at all, the Poe Collector would be a reasonable suspect to analyze. Rather, he seems to be a gatherer of "wandering spirits" (which he mentions multiple times) specifically, whom he attempts to put to rest.

Hey there, thanks for the comment! I agree with you 100% and actually mentioned that around 3:43 and 5:47. You could certainly call Majora "the Devil" when it comes to the history of Termina, but I was more so focused on who "the Devil" could be with regards to Flat's story of Sharp.

  • @Red-jt6uu

Some have pointed out that Gomess appears to be a lich since you have to attack the orb to deal any damage to him. A lich is generally defined as a necromancer that turned themselves into an undead being to become immortal and binds their soul to some object, a phylactery, so that they can keep coming back if their body is destroyed. The way to truly defeat a lich is to destroy its phylactery.
If Gomess is supposed to be a lich, it would make sense for Sharp to go to him for knowledge on resurrecting the dead. It would also make sense for Gomess to ask for his soul in return because the cost of immortality for these beings in fiction usually requires feeding on the lives or souls of others to stay alive.
As others have pointed out, grim reapers are usually not depicted as evil. Liches are always going to be evil because of the lives they have to take to become/stay immortal.

I always figured that Gomez was The Devil, but I always preferred the theory that it was the Mask Salesman that was the one to open Stone Tower since he "went to such great lengths to obtain that legendary mask". The Stone Tower is clearly honoring Majora. It's a common but usually well accepted theory that the Ikanians were the "ancient tribe" that made Majora's Mask and hid it (there's also the theory that the Ikanians were the Shiekah, which makes sense to me since we never see them in game but we find remnants of them)
So the order of events being:
The Shiekah with no Zelda-like royal family to protect become the rulers of Termina and rename themselves to Ikana.
They make Majora's Mask in honor of their Sun Goddess, however they have hexing rituals which makes the mask become sentient/posses Majora's soul and turn evil. (they also make the Fierce Deity Mask; probably from the soul of the Ikana version of Link)
The Ikana Royal Family seal away Majora's Mask in Stone Tower, and lock the way to climbing the tower with traps, the only "key" being the Elegy of Emptiness (similar to the roles of Zelda's Lullaby and Song of Time in Hyrule) which is a secret held by the Royal Family.
The Ikana War breaks out and nearly everyone dies, survivors move to Termina field and form Clock Town which becomes a popular trade town. (this would explain Kafei and Mayor Dutor having red eyes; they're descended from the Shiekah)
Years later the Mask Salesman goes looking for Majora's Mask - a legendary mask. Either for his personal collection or for evil purposes (we don't know), he finds himself in Ikana Canyon and using some form of magic, he enters Stone Tower and retrieves Majora's Mask. Opening the door causes the dead to rise.
Gomez who must have also been trapped within Stone Tower, or perhaps a creation of Majora, comes and tempts Sharp with restoring the Royal Family's strength, but puts a curse on Sharp and the Ikana Royal Family. Twinmold is used as a Guardian over the local Giant.

It would be interesting to see if there's any difference between the original Japanese and the English translation as sometimes things are changed. It could be just a figure of speech as the phrase/idea of "selling one's soul to the devil" is quite a common one, at least in the English speaking world. Interesting video nonetheless.

    • @Retroatron

You bring up a fine point, one that I wondered about myself. According to everything I've seen, "Akuma" is the Japanese word for "Devil", but since there is (to the best of my knowledge) no singular "Devil" in Japanese culture, "Akuma" can be more directly translated to "Demon". I'd love a native Japanese speaker to fact check me on this, but this is what I remember finding from my research while making this video. I can't really speak to the selling of Sharp's soul as being a figure of speech when translated to Japanese, but I'll see what information I can scrounge up on that. Thanks for the support!

Cool theory, although, there is a big problem with it. Majora’s Mask’s development time was less than a year. All writing, storyboarding, enemy design, programming, etc. was all done in less than a year. This means that *on top* of every quest and dialogue, that Eiji Aonuma had to also implement this fanciful story into the game. I find it incredibly unlikely if not, impossible for it to be the case. I for one think that Gomess was simply a mini boss they implemented very quickly in order to defend the boss key, and that orb is just an easy way to tell the player his weak spot. Especially since Gomess is never mentioned before or after his appearance in stone tower. I think that, lore wise, it makes more sense for the Garo leaders than Gomess to have raised the dead, because they have plot relevance, and we’re obviously thought about more than the one off boss that you see once in the whole game. That doesn’t mean that I think it was the Garo leaders, I still think it was Majora. He has the largest motive to buy the soul of sharp and wreak havoc in Ikana.

I've personally toyed with the idea the happy mask salesman attempted to heal sharp in exchange for access to the Stone Tower. It seemed like that would be the "great personal lengths" he mentioned having to go to in order to acquire it. To be honest it's never really talked about how he came by the mask or where.
We do know this wouldn't be the first time he demanded help and only after getting what he wanted does he return the favor (even if Link didn't have MM right away). We also know the mask salesman has insight into souls since he can recognise a terrible fate especially in the case of the transformation masks
Additionally the song of healing doesn't work on Sharp since he's already dead, so even if the salesman has good intentions the song wouldn't have worked and he may have just gone on his way. Leaving the composer to his anguish
Flat says his brother sold his soul, and the mask salesman is literally a sales person who happens to deal in magical masks often tied to souls and other very personal things
I think this theory might suffer tho from its reliance on sharp having gotten MM for the salesman. I just don't see anyway without the elegy of emptiness for him to have scaled the tower, unless that mario mask on his pack isn't just an Easter egg. Also after defeating Twinmold for the first time there that cutscene with the spirit orb thanking Link before it goes up into the sky suggesting at least some of the undead are tied to Skullkid/Majora's work in the area.

You're entitled to that opinion, and I get where you're coming from! If the quote is to be taken literally, though, this theory would make sense of a few oddities that the Skull Kid theory couldn't explain. Why would Skull Kid (or Majora) need a soul? If Skull Kid brought Igos du Ikana and his two servants back from the dead, why wouldn't they disappear when Majora's curse was vanquished in Ikana like things do in every other region? Why wouldn't Tatl (who had followed Skull Kid since before he found Majora's Mask) tell Link right where Flat was sealed, how to get to him, and how to heal Sharp? Just a few questions that didn't sit right with me. I'm certainly not claiming that Skull Kid didn't bring desolation to Ikana under the influence of Majora's Mask, or even that he's not the "masked one" mentioned by Sharp - only that the selling of Sharp's soul doesn't seem to be directly related to Skull Kid's trickery or Majora's curse. Thanks for the comment and have a good one!

Nah, it had to be someone as ancient as the ikana, maybe a little younger, so I went with the fierce deity. The fierce deity in the manga is the one that sealed Majora in a mask, and skinned majora after killing him. As the fierce deity was known in the manga for his greed, he could’ve been the one who acted as the devil, and I think I know why. The fierce deity is op in the game, and is capable of defeating any boss quickly, so he might have tried to achieve unlimited power by going to ikana in order to reap a soul to increase his own power to make himself the most powerful being in termina.

Alright, here's my deep dive: The fact that "devil" is lowercase despite having the definite article "the" and despite there being no context for who that might be, if we're taking the grammar seriously, indicates that he's referring to some (likely demonic) entity that _isn't_ explicitly El Diablo himself, but that the speaker still thinks the entity is well-known enough to be referred to so ambiguously.
In times like this, we turn to the original Japanese: I couldn't readily find it, but you say the word _akuma_ is used, which is indeed rendered both "[the] devil" and "[the] demon". I'd be curious to know if that word _akuma_ is ever used to refer to the proverbial Lord of Demons in greater Japanese language, or if it's a term used to describe just any sort of hellish being, rather like the words "demon" and even "devil" can in English. As for the "the" in _"the_ devil", though, Japanese doesn't use articles, so it's possible that _"a_ demon" is an equally valid translation, and one with less cultural baggage that the original writers possibly never intended.
In any case, Flat is clearly referring to _someone_ entity as a powerful demonic force. I always assumed the common interpretation is that he's referring to Majora, and that he's possibly giving a little backstory to how Majora was an entity that his bygone society actually interacted with, possibly tying into the inversions and desecrations of Hylian religion which permeate Stone Tower and Ikana―and also, of course, explaining the giant carved image of Majora's Mask in the 'atrium' of the Temple. That would indeed be a unique reveal, as nobody else in the game (except the Mask Salesman, if I'm not mistaken) ever seems to recognize the Majora's Mask for what it really is, referring instead to the Skull Kid wearing it.
I don't know if Skull Kid himself makes sense, because his shenanigans are very recent, and Ikana has been dead for a long time. It seems more likely that Sharp encountered the same deity Skull Kid encountered than it does that he encountered Skull Kid. Skull Kid seems to have _reawakened_ the spirits in Ikana as part of his/Majora's menacing Termina by opening the Temple's door, but it seems Sharp sold his soul long before, not recently, since that lines up much better with both the undead state of Ikana and the fact that Flat had his time to compose his song and erect his monolith.
Moreover, all we're told is that Skull Kid opened the Stone Temple's door, and that that released certain spirits. This implies that Stone Temple had been sealed on purpose in the past to shut them in, further reinforcing the notion that the people of Ikana had been dealing with some demonic forces in the past well before the events of the game. The fact that Majora leads Skull Kid to rekindle Ikana's demonic forces and the fact that Majora's Mask is front and center in the temple seem to me to _heavily_ imply that it was in fact Majora they were worshiping in the past. Combined with their confirmed awareness of Hylian faith (see the fiendish block carvings defiling the Triforce with their tongues), this suggests that Ikanans like Flat were aware that Majora was a demon/devil (as opposed to something more holy or divine), and combined with his use of _"the_ devil", I think it's safe to assume that Flat was referring to Majora, the greatest _akuma_ revered by his society.
It is also altogether possible that an "the devil" referred to is an entity entirely unknown to us, a bit like the entity that lives in the "evil" Goddess Statue outside Hateno in Breath of the Wild. By that logic, it certainly could be Gomess, that would give him a _raison d'etre_ instead of just being an interesting surprise. I'd be more inclined to imagine that Sharp sold his soul while still living, but that doesn't preclude him selling it to Gomess: After all, like Sharp, Gomess endured in Ikana even after the kingdom's fall, but Majora seems to have abandoned it until recently. So it could well have been this Gomess figure Sharp sold his soul to―it could also be that Gomess was something like a priest or demonic servant of Majora's, which might explain his presence at Stone Tower in a way outside simply being drawn to dead spirits.
Of course, there's also the Faustian Bargain trope/reference at play, and it's even possible that was in the minds of the Japanese team writing this stuff for a character with a distinctly Western, almost stereotypically German mustache. Or that could just have just been baggage added by the localization team, either deliberately or subconsciously.
In any case, as surprising as it is to see "the devil" referenced in a Zelda game, I think it's telling that it only happened the once, and I think it's rather unsurprising that it happened here in Majora haha. Very interesting vid, thanks for drawing attention to this fun little mystery
