  • I hold an "IMC" or IR(R) rating (unique to the UK), but haven't used it much, although I have logged 50+ hours of IFR time over 8 years. My next pilot training milestone is to get my full Instrument Rating, which I hope to do using the CBIR (competency based instrument rating) course.
Before I can do that, I aim to become proficient at all the basics of practical instrument flying. Doing this alone as a PPL holder is challenging.
This video shows a valuable practice IFR/IMC flight which flushed out a number of currency-related unknowns and highlighted my weaknesses in RT and other procedures.
I flew from Dunkeswell to Newquay for several procedures then returned. Although this edited version looks like all-VFR conditions, a significant part of the flight was in full IMC, which you can see in the full 2 hour un-cut version of this flight here: • Real-time 2hr Solo IMC...

So much learning! For the full, real-time uncut version of this flight showing ALL the mistakes as well as some real IMC flying in the soup watch the 1h53m version here: ruclips.net/video/-ZybsbA1e-Q/видео.html

Great honest video. Great flying and piloting. I think you could have had a safety pilot while in uncontrolled airspace. Not a dig. I’ve recently done my IMC. It’s difficult to get someone to help.

I don't disagree - always better to have a safety pilot on board, but they're not always available!

Charlie, i've been doing IR(R) refresher training recently, with an instructor. after an 8 year break since my last IR(R) test. I've found that recording the flight, and then going back through the video afterwards to note what I did wrong (and right!), the radio calls that I made a mess of, the instructor's advice etc is very helpful, as I seem to only absorb about half the info at the time!!
I've also upgraded my sim equipment at home, to make it actually useful for IR practice, and that meant that when I did an ILS into Oxford the other day with instructor, it was perfect - for the first time ever!!
I was supposed to be doing my IR(R) flight test today, but it's been weathered off! Ironic, but i'm not willing to fly in gusting 35 kts.

I wish I had a Sim set up at home but it's not practical sadly! Good luck with the test when the weather clears up enough for it!

Out of the comfort zone is the only place any learning ever happens! Glad the long version is useful.

A good reminder that I need to do more instrument practise Charlie!
We were asked to do do a practise Pan with D&D on Monday - same controller I think. Always good to help give experience to the trainee Controllers
You can load geo-referenced approach plates on skydemon which makes the hold very easy
Best to have a check list for instrument approaches - I have also left my Garmins in GPS by mistake !

I felt like such a dummy when I realised what it was, but also very relieved that my instruments were working correctly! (Although DME still not behaving) Thanks for the tip on loading the plates on SkyDemon - didn't know that.

    Hi Charlie,
    Nice video, good effort there!!
If you need a timer for the holdings, with your dual Gns530/430 setup, you can easily leave the 530 in map mode and switch the 430 to AUX page 2 (utility page) then from there enter "Flight Timers" and use the "Generic timer" as your stopwatch.
After hearing you saying where you've done your seaplane rating I really want to check out Como Aeroclub and who knows, when I move back there maybe get my seaplane rating too!!
Looking forward to your next video!!
    U

Enjoying the Video's Loved the Halloween style window opening. I jumped as well :-) I just did my QXC to Exeter from Bournemouth and tried to do a nice Video like you. I got hour and a half of my Feet as clearly i knocked the Gopro. Question, on a FB group i am in I posted some solo circuits of Bournemouth with Audio of the Tower. I had loads of people jump on me saying you’re not allowed to broadcast ATC. I asked you about having a Gopro on the outside of your plane the other day and you perfectly cleared that one up thank you. Hoping you can add some clarity to the ATC issue 😊 BTW I am lucky enough to have a friend that teaches ILS and have done some flying with the Goggles on and loved it. Wishing I had done a full PPL now rather than a LAPL as I certainly will be looking to continue my licence on as flying has grabbed me a lot more than I though it would.

I'm glad the sense of shock comes across in the video too! I nearly needed new pants! That's the first I've ever heard about not being allowed to record ATC - most of them are recorded for public purposes anyway, so this is news to me. I've done countless flight videos almost all of which include ATC recordings, and I've not heard a peep, but I don't know if there are any rules against it.
