    I lived in a 12ft yurt year round in a wood in England for 5 years. Small wood stove, walls and roof insulated with 3 inches of wool batts. I made a clear pvc curtain over the wooden door to let in the sunshine in winter. Lovely space. Insulation is key for winter, makes it like a sauna!

    • @DaedalusDesign
      @DaedalusDesign 3 года назад +1

      Did you make the skin of it yourself? Curious if that's a reasonable thing to attempt. Sticker shock after seeing some of the prefab ones.

    • @carlbernsen1290
      @carlbernsen1290 3 года назад +3

      @@DaedalusDesign The outer cover was 12oz canvas and the insulation was about 4” of spun sheeps’ wool building insulation. I didn’t make that cover but I sewed others for yurts I built to sell, out of rot proof polycotton canvas. It’s not too hard with a tough sewing machine and enough space to work.

    Can you live in it for 6 yrs? Of course..you can live in any shelter as long as it keeps the elements off you, and you can keep it warm in the winter. People have been living in yurts for centuries over in areas like Mongolia. It may not be the ultimate luxurious accommodation, but you can definitely live in it if you had to.

      I seriously considered a yurt, but the wife wouldn't let me... now the ex-wife has no say, but I can no longer afford it because I have an ex-wife...

      honestly its like asking, could you live in a 1 room log cabin for 6 years... The truth is, some people actually buy and live in yurts year round, decking them out with full kitchens with fridge, sleeping loft, bathroom with shower, everything...

    Pretty sweet setup for a basic yurt! I used to sell yurts, tents, and tipis for Colorado Yurt Company - I can attest to the strengths of the yurt structure for snowy and windy climates.

I am now building a steal the cabin I think it is a much better option for staying at the same location. I am looking forward to solid walls again.

    Don't own one, but some of my friends do and I have helped them set up. Very roomy, sturdy, with good headroom. Depending on your framework and covering they can be not too bad labor-wise if you have a little help. For sure, as a rule NOT for backpackers. I have a 14X14' Marquis from Panther Pavilions and the yurt guys will get up a similar sized unit in about the same time, maybe less.

      google is your friend, my friend... a company I considered back in the day was Pacific Yurts out of Oregon, expensive, but you get what you pay for when it comes to yurts (or anything for that matter). I know they have had yurts set up for 20+ years, so longevity is a thing to consider (and no, I don't get referrals, unfortunately)
