  • Join us as we soar in a glider in the skies above Dunstable Downs near Luton. We had a taster day at the London Gliding Club which included three flights to see if we wanted to become a glider pilot and join the club.
I did two of my three flights but felt queasy towards the end of each flight, so I offered my final flight to my wife Jill. She said yes and went for it! She absolutely loved it, you can see her delight on the video. I enjoyed the experience and got to fly the glider on both flights. Flights lasted about 30 - 40 minutes. On my first flight we were towed to 2,000ft and then got lift up to 3,000ft almost straight away. The weather was gorgeous all day with loads of thermals and lift.
We all thouroughly enjoyed the whole day. We met with Barry and Tina were also with us for the whole day, Barry like me was there for 3 flights. He is wearing the pale blue t-shirt and is the second one to go up in the video.
Thank you to the ground crew who looked after us on the ground and prepared the gliders for each flight and to our instructor Mike who all made us feel welcome and looked after us in the air and on the ground.
Shame I was not a great flyer, otherwise I would have been keen to join - hey ho. At least I've done it and look back at on the day with fond memories. If you are interested in having a go then contact the club, they are all volunteers and very welcoming and supportive. They have a range of flight experiances available from single flights to a 5 day course!

This is a bit new, GoPros on a glider, all a bit rushed and unplanned! Still seemed to work out okay, no lost cameras and some great footage. What's gone well for you when it was unplanned?

Well made video. Excellent shots, editing and sound track. Looks like a wonderful place to go soaring. I was intrigued by the Art Deco building and the red HGV towards the end, looks like a repurposed fire control unit.

Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it. The building is fabulous, I too love the Art Deco styling, the bowed front bar area on the righthand side is wonderful. The HGV is the command centre they drive out onto the landing field to act as a mobile control tower. It could certainly be an old fire control vehicle.

Nice video John! Club member here. Looks like you were lucky and had a great soaring day. On my first one-day course we only found sink, so the flights were quite short. 30-40 minutes are actually enough for a first-time experience, as thermalling can make you a bit sick when you're not in control. You will find that once you're flying those turns it gets better. I love the site of the club.. the views are stunning and it's so peaceful. The members and instructors are also very friendly. If you really liked the experience, I would encourage you to try again as you have a temporary membership now.
Thank you for sharing your experience. The shots are great, especially the wingtip ones!

Thanks Rafa for your comments on the video. It's a good call regarding having another go, especially with the temporary membership. I'm not a great air traveller or car passenger, getting car sick / queasy so whilst I enjoyed it I don't think I'll have another go. I used to do scuba diving but gave that up as I was seasick all the time!
You're right about the location and members / instructors, they we approachable, knowledgeable and extremely helpful.

Indeed if you know that you easily get motion sickness then just the anticipation will make things worse :) Also, although the summer days are beautiful, the hot cockpit does not help either. But I'm glad to hear you had a great time. Thanks for sharing again!

Hello Rafa. I remember watching the flying in 1961. At that time they launched with a "winch". The winch was a jeep. The jeep was driven out and jacked up on a stand. One rear wheel was exchanged with the capstan. We were sitting near the top of the ridge. One of the fellows was using us as a marker. He would head straight toward us turn and ride the ridge. After abought three try's he gained altitude and was on his way.

Hi John, I'm a pilot at Dunstable, I've been looking for footage on the club and someone else from the club recommending this video as a source, would you have any objection to me using some of the clips in this video on a project for the club?
    Thanks
    Oliver

+Oliver Nurse in essence I’d say yes, however the music is copyrighted and only licensed for RUclips platform under my account. So you would be breaking copyright if you used it. I gave Paul Richer a non copyright version for your Facebook page which would be best to use.

Hi John, I have just taken up the post of new member ambassador at Lo ndon Gliding Club. Would you have any problem with me sending a link to your excellent video in response to enquiries we have in response to our Facebook page advert. I stress this is not blanket publication, just individual private response to enquiries we get about every week or two over the summer- so that people can get an idea what the day is all about. Regards, Roger Rhodes
