Another thought some might want to consider is to add wheels to each bed so they could be moved around their yard for sunlight or storm protection, etc.
I hope you don't mind me taking your idea and telling my wife I thought of this...after I make her a couple...lol....only thing I'm going to add is drain holes in the bottom and get a piece of eaves trough that should fit underneath the barrel strapped with unistrap at one end to flow any run off water into a five gallon bucket... That way I can use horse manure on the bottom three inches and good soil on the top seven inches.. This is the same setup I made for my garden, no more woodchuck problems. I prefer this way too as I made mine waist high to me so no bending over killing my back. Weeding if at all is a breeze, no standing water in torrential rain and they are moveable if need be. It's a very advantageous set up for most of whatever you plant. Only my tomatoes and potatoes go in the ground. Lettuce, peppers, Swiss chard, onions, beets, beans are all grown in mine and grow amazingly well, I dare say better than in ground. It's fantastic to walk up to your garden and just get to work right where you stand. Next year I take about 1/4 of the old soil out and add fresh compost and organic fertilizer and worm castings and it's good to go. The older soil I removed I save in a pile and amend it with leaf mold and more compost and I have it ready for next year or whenever and wherever I need it. Great video though, no annoying music and straight to the point-thanks for making this.
Thank you for sharing this. I sacrificed one of my rain barrels and luckily I had some scrap wood left from another project. I don't have best control with a circular saw, so i used it to make the inital cut, then used a reciprocating saw to finish the job. I made 2, had them filled, and strawberries planted before lunchtime. Of course, my toddler was my assistant. Edit: The reciprocating saw was used on the barrel.
Dear Rick, one and half year, the first barrel collapsed on its weight I thinks ,there are more rainy days in the Netherlands as in Canada? So i forcened the barrels with a wooden bruce on both sides. Also had to put some metal bars on both sides below the barrel to avoid collapsing, too. Now there are good and sturdy. Got a lot of reviews and refer to the Canadian Guy on YT :-)

To whoever is making these: double check that your bases line up because if you don't make the Xs identical, the 24" posts won't fit. Make sure the piece on your left goes over the piece on your right each time or vice versa. Or after you screw one base, just hold up the other X to make sure its lines up. Or make a symmetrical X (measure 18" minus 1/2the width of the 2x4 and line up at the top) so you can just rotate. Love my planters thank you for this video! I also stained the wood and spray painted the barrels and they look pretty!

Some dam fine work, thanks for posting. I'm going to use these on a hard surface. Plan to flatten the leg bottoms and put them on pallets for easy moving and filling out of a tractor bucket. Some cheap hoops for cover material might come in handy here in Canada, not sure what i can source easily. Maybe some barrel lid rings? Have some square hole wire fence laying around, might try to make a few arches for climbing plants too. Stay gold.

I saw this and continued pondering for days, then finally came up with elevating my barrels using 4 X 4 skids on cement blocks. Same height, no lumber required, the skids were free from work, I did however have to buy the blocks. Nice work though.
I bought 11 barrels last year 5.00 each off Craigslist and have tried hiring someone to make frames 2ft tall.. I have a sitting bench I will use to weed and garden with. Mine contained syrup for soda, food grade. Noone available so i do have a sawsaw. Will do these myself. Thanks so much.

Rick, marvellous and easy workout. I made already 5 , and just painted them in the same colour as the barrels.As mine were open on the top, I bought some Guttagliss PVC Foam which is easy to cut for the diameter. THX again!
Okay, so, I currently have 2 plastic barrels that I currently have NO USE FOR. I had originally filled them with water and used them in my greenhouse as a "heat sink". BUT, they hadn't really added any extra heat to my GH, so, I have been wanting to find a new use for them. AND, I have been thinking that IF I can cut them in half "lengthwise", that maybe I can make some great planters out of them. I have already cut some in half the OTHER way, and NOW, I am thinking that cutting them in half "LENGTHWISE" that I could manage to grow more produce in them as longer beds. I would basically ONLY need info as to how to build the WOODEN base, that would properly be able to hold the plastic barrel once it was cut in half lengthwise. So, now, I have to watch this video, to know how to do this right. Okay, so I am here to learn how to make the barrels into beds, BUT, I gotta say that YOUR DOGS are REALLY making me happy. I mean, I have 1 "BULLY BREED" dog and 1 "DOG THAT IS LOOKIN LIKE YOUR OTHER DOG", so, I am feelin good seeing YOUR dogs playing. BUT, OKAY, I gotta get serious here I guess. Anyhow, I can figure out how to cut the barrel in half LENGTHWISE, BUT, what about making the part the barrel half sits on?? Now, that is what I need to get right in order to be able to be able to go on about growing plants in these beds. I see that there are 2 24 inch pieces, then I THINK it says 1 36" part. Then, at the 18" mark, you make mark in pencil or pen, and then at that 18" part, is where the 2 24" parts end up being joined together?? And, 3 inch "wood screws" are used to join together the planks that will be making up the frame of the "plastic barrel planters". Anyway, THIS is just all a nice video that helps with making up some new beds to grow things in. I am still very confused as to how to make up the beds with using some old blue plastic barrels. I am mostly confused about making the wooden frame to hold on the plastic half barrels. AND, I haven;t had much success with any weed blocking fabric. I have bought it and used it, BUT, the weeds just end up coming up and ruining everything. My family is VERY against any weed killers, ROUNDUP is like SATAN to my mom.
Yeah, I see just HOW that the barrel can be cut in half lengthwise. And that would SURELY make it easy peasy to make the barrel be able to be cut in half lengthwise once the end purpose is made known.
It would give more support to make half lap joints on the side pieces instead of screwing the 2x4s together, though the project would take a little longer. L

Don't cut through the caps. Cut through the barrel 90° to the caps and use the caps as drains.
That's what I was thinking. That will also help in keeping the wood dryer slowing any rot.

Are you using pressure treated 2x4s? I see the bottom rotting quickly with ground contact.
