    As someone in south Louisiana, I’m in disbelief a cat 1 caused so much chaos and exposed massive ineptitude from leaders. The lack of preparation for this is inexcusable. It’s not just on CenterPoint. This was an epic failure. Also, it seems like surrounding counties were better prepared than Harris county, smh.

    • @Big_Island_Boi
      @Big_Island_Boi Месяц назад +2

      Wrong. You're commenting as if a storm affects all areas equally. As someone who claims to be in south Louisiana you should know better. Also, the surrounding counties are less densely populated than Houston / Harris County. So they could be equally or even even more affected than Houston / Harris County--on a percentage basis--and still have far fewer affected customers. And it was only estimated to be a Cat 1 storm... that's the lowest ranked categorized storm. We've had many Cat 1 storms pass through the Houston area over the years that did FAR less damage. That's the thing with storms: You never really know what kind of damage they are going to do until they over. I've been her before when the city / county / state / feds recommended that millions of people evacuate the coastal areas and Houston... and millions of people DID... and they sat in gridlocked traffic for hours--even days--and that storm did NO damage whatsoever. Which is not to say that Centerpoint could not have been more prepared; one can ALWAYS be more prepared. But preparedness = MONEY. So "more prepared" = higher electricity rates for everyone in the area... all year long. Right? But maybe that's the answer. Maybe everyone in the region should be paying a few cents extra per kwh every month--that goes into a rainy day fund (literally) instead of into Centerpoint's bank account. And that fund pays for the extra preparations... and the extra clean up costs after the storms. And maybe there's an independent body / board that manages that fund... to make sure it gets spent and managed correctly.

      @@Big_Island_Boi You are wrong about several points. Technically, tropical depressions and storms are have lower rankings than a Cat 1, so you are wrong on that point. Next, preparedness entails more than evacuations recs, I never brought up evacuations, you did. Preparedness varies by storm intensity and path among other factors. Finally, the lack of preparation doesn’t rest solely on CenterPoint, like my comment referenced. You make no mention of the role other public and private agencies seemingly failed to fulfill in the emergency preparedness and response process. If you want to focus specifically on CenterPoint, I think hardening infrastructure and readying outside support were two parts of their massive blunder. So your commentary regarding gridlock, never really knowing etc is irrelevant to the standard approach to storms that weren’t taken. Another errant point you made regards my comment on surrounding counties. I clearly stated that surrounding counties seemed better prepared. Percentage basis is a moot point. The simple observation is did leaders in other counties have better preparedness and response plans in place, and the answer is seemingly yes. At no point did I make the claim all were affected equally. However, based on impacts, it seems other areas were better prepared than Harris County.

    • @newtiger007
      @newtiger007 Месяц назад +2

      @@Big_Island_Boi many of your points are wrong. Technically, tropical depressions and storms rank lower than a Category 1. You are wrong to state cat 1 is the lowest ranked storm. Secondly, preparedness doesn’t mean exclusively CenterPoint and evacuations. Other agencies and actions failed to do simple things that help mitigate risks. In comparison, other counties seem to have done a better job preparing for this emergency. Varying populations is moot point, the question is did HC agencies do their jobs and take this threat seriously. Your focus on gridlock traffic has nothing to do with my points. Also, when did I imply all areas were impacted equally? You chose to interpret my comment that way and lodge errant criticism my way. I never made that asinine point, even a 5 yr old knows impacts vary by location. Hardening infrastructure and readying support were actions that could have been taken but weren’t. Those are basic storm prep and response options which were overlooked for the impacts of this storm. You do have an idea of storm impacts before they hit that’s literally why storms are rated by wind speed intensity. Agencies from FEMA to NWS to insurance companies literally have clear understandings of storm damages in advance and apply it in their responses.

      Our houses and infrastructure aren’t built the same as they were in the days before air conditioning or as they are in the tropics with higher ceilings, cross ventilation etc…My apartment windows are plate glass that don’t even open except one tiny one in my bedroom for safety as per code. And NO FANS of any kind due to no electricity. No tropical breezes and the temperature doesn’t go down at night to cool homes and people overnight. So don’t try comparing apples to oranges just because you hate Texans.

      As a Californian, I would be fucked. I can barely tolerate more than 85F with normal humidity

    goes to show how many of you literally would not last, if the grid entirely went down tommorrow. i just wish more ppl thought of that. you are so dependant on a system that NEEDS you, more than you need it, if you just take time to adjust. we went without power in florida for 36 days, no one died. no one lost their shit in my area.... yall are a week in and literally dying. this country would not last one week without lights and internet. yall are so soft.

    Getting the linemen to do their work while threatening them can only happen in a democrat run city. I would not blame them if they just all went home. They should be praising them, thanking them, offering them safe water. That's what human beings do in republican states. Cat 1, try being in a cat 5. 6 days, try 5 weeks without electric. Where is your mayor Whitmier? Why are you threatening the linemen?
