Huge fan of Forrest Sawyer. I think he got this interview because he was filling in for Ted Koppel on Nightline the night Madonna was booked and they seemed to have an electric chemistry.
It so sad how time flies. She had here 36, 37 years. Now in 2024 she is almost 66. Aprecciate you're life. Because life is too short we can't go back in past.
What i like is that she never lied, every thing, every wish, every whim coincides with her current mind, she had biological children, adopted children, another marriage, she keeps doing music even tough she is not so commercial as she was before, she had her sisters, she still is vulnerable on her singing, etc...
Lost my mom when I was a small child, grew up without a mother basically... No other family around... This interview makes me cry every time. The way she's describing how she feels is exactly how I feel when I am in a crisis. Developed PTSD as a child as well (from several other circumstances) and now suffer from extreme anxiety and panic attacks. Every time I have anxiety all I want is for my mom to hold me... For anyone out there that lost their mom there is an incredible book called "Motherless Daughters" by Hope Edelman. I just burst out in tears when I first saw it in the book store... Great book! I strongly recommend it.
Her vulnerability in this interview is apparent and I've never seen her so emotional and honest. I think she shed a tear or two. For an icon and a tough woman, Madonna is all human.
She was so beautiful here and I think this is the prettiest she ever was. I like her hair and the simple make-up that she was wearing. She was also very open, honest and down to earth during this interview.
She's confident, grounded, professional, intelligent, strong, and nobody can even get close to her, she's above the masses of idiots that try and find her flaws.... she's a beautiful person♡
She’s done everything she predicted she would do...wanted to do. This is what I love about her. She knows what her path is in life and goes for it with conviction and makes it happen for her and for us.
@Marvin Morawski it’s really unfair because when people think of pop stars it’s usually how dumb, fake, and how their art isn’t deep. When it comes to Madonna she paved the way for these pop stars and she doesn’t have any of those problems.
Forrest Sawyer is my favorite interviewer of all time. After he interviewed Madonna on Nightline in 1990, she said to the press that it felt like she'd been called into the principal's office. Sawyer said he always thought of himself more as the gym teacher.
I can totally relate to Madonna’s expression of emptiness, and unfathomable pain and devastation at losing her mother, because I never knew my mother growing up, and there has always been a sense of loss and abandonment that has followed me into adulthood! It is completely devastating to not have the love of a mother in ones formative years.
i lost mine at ...6 months. i wish i got to see her, wish I could remember how her voice sounded like but losing her at yall age would be so much hurtful. But still i think id rather be hurting from missing her than not having had the opportunity to meet her at all.
You are not alone. I identify completely!! I am just seeing this now in March of 2020, but you can always.message me. Write something back on here so I know you saw this and I will give you.my Facebook info.
I lost my mother aged 10, I can completely relate to madonna, and how lonely it is not to have that one person you can turn to, who loves you unconditionally. She isn't being calculating in this interview as someone commented earlier....it's real. I know because I feel it too. I've always recognised this in Madonna, and I love her for it
This is one of her most shockingly truthful interviews to date (and somehow even Forrest Sawyer didn't remind her of that infamous Nightline interview they did in 1990). And here's the thing: Anytime Madonna talks about her Mom, she changes expression and tone almost instantaneously. You can practically see her "veneer" of the strong, powerful woman/artist slowly come down like one of those theater curtains. For years, decades, in numerous interviews, the subject of her Mom's death, her feeling of abandonment, and the steps she had to take growing up and compensating for her absence in the only way she knows how, has always been a difficult, bittersweet and often sad subject for her to talk about. This Nightline interview is probably the best example of that, and it's quite a stunning thing to watch. It's rare to see Madonna be this "real."
@@mikestevenson576 Oh it was terrific for sure. But I noted infamous as it was a period of major censorship for Madonna and she spent a lot of time and energy defending her artistry and choices relating to the "Justify My Love" fracas. People freaked out over that video left and right.
She really is beautiful here and the fact that she exposed her emotions here. She allowed herself to be vulnerable which is a rarity for her. She is wonderful and amazing. ☺️👌🏻🤲🏻
This version of her was much better than her recent one. She is polite here and actually looks him in the eye. Look at her recent interviews. She never looks people in the eye.
this was so beautiful, i love Madonna so much. her song mother + father is a beautiful reflection on this sentiment of not having a mother to be there for you .
i love madonna, i lost my mother 6 months ago and even though im older , the experience has devastated me and so the loss of a mother period at any age is devastating, and it just changes you in every way you can think of ,
I lost my mom last September and I know how devastating that feels. One of her best interviews along with her VH1 interview the same year. When she says she would trade everything she owns for a mother, God, that was like a punch right in the heart.
Great interview. I've never seen her open up so much. Two months after this, she was pregnant. She probably was trying to conceive around this time and that is why her emotions were running high.
@Marvin Morawski she’s not being manly, she just doesn’t take shit from people, something that most women aren’t taught to do because we’ll be seen as a bitch and people won’t want to talk to us.
Madonna truly knew how to play the media and took the full controle which shock and upset people she disnt allow anyone to destroy her unlike whitney or mariah o MJ or prince
This was a time where she wanted to be taken seriously because of Evita. I’m not saying it was calculated, but she surely knew what she was doing with this interview where she willingly shows her vulnerability.
Madonna has always been about change and has never settled in one look or another for long periods of time becasue yes she gets bored easily and wants to do something new and fresh.
I have lost my father when my mother was pregnant to me and I can relate to her at 70%...Losing your father can be somehow a gap that can close, while losing your mother is a huge hole in sbs life...Significant people make history always through their tragedies. Brava Madonna!
I wish for her to find a good man to meet some of her needs, be comforting & wise. I fear that will not come with the young guys she has been with since Guy. No one can fill the emptiness of losing your mother yet having a partner certainly has its benefits.
It seems she was at her most open, honest and vulnerable here. That says something about Forrest as well. He put her at ease so she could open up instead of attacking her like some interviewers do, male and female. BTW 9:25 - so touching. As much as we can empathize that not having a parent with you is difficult (I lost my father, not exact same, but similar), that simple expression says more than words ever could. And this was clearly a point in her life where one truly relays on a mother, if present; when you are going through difficult times and when you want to start having children. Which was both for her at this point.
Keep in mind that many people have mothers who are alive who they also can not call because their mothers are not nurturing nor emotionally supportive.
All the usual questions put to a woman at that time. Whilst it was enlightening to discover Madonna's vulnerability front and centre (rather than alluded to through her wonderful music), I think what business is it of mine? Am I groomed to know about men's business? No. The same should apply to women. I am happy with just the music. I don't need to know every detail about Madonna's life, none of it, really (though I'm happy about her children). It would have been great if people could have asked her about her art in the context of art, rather than the never-ending "controversies". I would like to know more about her philosophies, concepts and design choices.
I think that deep in her heart she knows Sean is the only man she's always gonna really love. Some people can love each other forever and not gonna end up together.
This was filmed in her living room at Harperley Hall, NYC. She's done a lot of interviews there, including a few with Cynthia McFadden. And she's talking about her sister Melanie (Henry) whom she's probably still most close to. Oh and Melanie looks like what Madonna would likely look like now, had she not had as much work done.
It is wild to me how this Madonna is light years wiser than todays Madonna. At times I do not relate to her current endeavors and I find all these footage more “her” if that makes sense.
And I remember this interview being so talked about because she made the joke about putting an ad in the Village Voice, and Diane Sawyer playfully mentions it at the end. After this, people were literally saying “Madonna is going to put an ad out for the father of her child!” I don’t know how she dealt with such scrutiny. Money helps I’m sure, but people really gave her grief about that comment.
This journalist is sooo good. You can tell that Madonna respects him, respects his questions and his way of conducting the interview.
Huge fan of Forrest Sawyer. I think he got this interview because he was filling in for Ted Koppel on Nightline the night Madonna was booked and they seemed to have an electric chemistry.
@@mikestevenson576 It's full circle considering he was the one who was part of her infamous 1990 interview. 😅
It so sad how time flies. She had here 36, 37 years. Now in 2024 she is almost 66. Aprecciate you're life. Because life is too short we can't go back in past.

She's so hurt by death of her mother. I've watched this interview a lot of times, and it still hurts me, I feel so sorry for her and wanna hug her 😢

Alan Balvin That’s so true, good comment, 100% spot on with how she is
Wow they broke her walls in this interview. She's one of the toughest women in music I know, and after watching this I can see why.
treg1980 you know you proved your point because of this comment itself. She’s that good that it made Carlos Martinez believe her softer image
and this was the same guy from that intense 1990 interview
@treg1980 ERRRRMAHHHGAWDDD
Probably THE thoughest
I love how vulnerable and open she is here. DEFINITELY one of her best!
Her vulnerability in this interview is apparent and I've never seen her so emotional and honest. I think she shed a tear or two. For an icon and a tough woman, Madonna is all human.

Exactly what I was rhinking in my head as it ended. Snap!
I agree I loved her simple makeup, she did look so beautiful here. Her skin looked amazing also.
She had many different looks that I like.
My favorite was how she looked in her Like A Prayer video.
I think she lookef her best in 2005
I couldn’t believe she was 37 here.
"I should just cancel my shrink appointment." Candid, raw, beautiful. Such a great interview! 🖤
One of her best interviews ever. I love her so much.
Ohh gosh..she misses her mother in every frustrating situation of her life and the sadness on her face was so visible...made me cry really.
She's confident, grounded, professional, intelligent, strong, and nobody can even get close to her, she's above the masses of idiots that try and find her flaws.... she's a beautiful person♡
Yes!
Madonna is so iconic. So composed and factual with these responses. A class act
Love how sophisticated and gentle she was
Since I've lost both of my parents, I COMPLETELY understand where she's coming from.
Sadly me too!
My condolences to both of you!
I’ve lost my father at a young age so I understand 😭💯
I'm fascinating by Madonna ability, she's done so much in her life. When she talks about her mother I cry

''Its not a problem meeting them, its a problem meeting one of them who's not an asshole'' relatable queen!
If only she was 30 years younger she could’ve had me. Such a shame for her.
@I Think The Fuck Not You Trick Ass Bitch she would’ve gotten married and still be married if I were in the picture. But unfortunately, I’m not.
I thought you liked assholes 😂
This is madonnas best interview I’ve come across, she’s humble, sensitive and vulnerable in this interview, quite moving, I find
My all time favorite M interview. As a kid I stayed up past my bedtime to tape this onto a VHS tape which I still have ♥ ♥ ♥
I've never seen anyone break her down like this in an interview, wow.
This was actually a really good intervew with her.
yes, it's powerful. I love her.
My absolute favorite interview. She looks so beautiful. The interviewer isn't judgmental or condescending and asked great questions.
