(EP22) Ford Fairmont Fail and Fix, with bonus Peugeot 404

  • FAIL! A loss of cruise control turns out to be brake light-related. Was it the switch? Was it just the fuse? Who knows. I also fail to bodge up some wiring, end up upside down and then take a look at a Peugeot 404 that isn't in a scrap yard! Happy days.

I passed my driving test at the 1st attempt in my father's 404 estate car. The examiner had never seen one before.. The examiner was not happy that the handbrake was out of his reach, the examiner was not happy about banging his head on the windscreen during the emergency stop ( pre seat belt law), the examiner wasn't to happy about us getting a puncture, but he was impressed that I changed the tyre quickly and in a heavy downpour of rain and then got him back to the test centre in one piece. After he told me I'd passed I apologised for stopping a bit too quick for him, he said he hadn't expected to stop that quickly. The lump on his brow was visibly growing and turning quite red by this time. After he got out of the car and walked off down the street I passed him with the rear tyres lit up on my way to pick up my father who was sitting on the wall outside the test centre.... He promptly gave me a proper bollocking for torturing his tyres. We were halfway home before he asked me if I'd passed.

I reckon, as the bulb fell out of the holder, it blew the fuse, which in turn caused the cruise control to stop working. I imagine the original brake switch is fine.

    • @alembic1105
      @alembic1105 4 года назад

From watching the first 30 seconds of the video, my first thought was that Ford / Ford related cars of that era wouldn't let you use the cruise control if there was an issue with the rear lights. So it's probably even more fine than a blown fuse, but literally just the fact that you need fully working lights to use cruise at all.

My wife and I had some five years of excellent service out of our 404, including a lot of long trips (including Mbabane to Cape Town several times), loaded up with four kids and a great pile of luggage. The biggest problem was when we had to drive into strong headwinds (especially with the roof rack on and loaded) - those handsome Pininfarina looks were as aerodynamic as a barn door. Speaking of PF, they also sold that four door saloon design to Fiat - ref 1800, 2100 and 2300. The Peugeot and Fiats were all good looking, which is more than one can say for the BMC tribe.

    Peugeot 404.
My late uncle (veterinairy) had one in white; approx. 1970.
Since his two daughters weren't even remotely interested in dad's work he tried to ''recruit'' me.
He nearly succeeded, until a cow stood om my foot (which is why he always wore Dutch wooden shoes) and I was kicked by a horse on the same day. The car was incredibly filthy and messy inside; used seringes, empty medicine containers everywhere, an ashtray overflowing with cigar stumps and strongly smelling of animal excrements. Allthough he knocked his wooden shoes clean of mud and manure on the sills. (RIP uncle Herman)

The 404 is one of those cars you wish you could still get today. We had four through various members of the family and they were all much loved for being as my dad used to say "Just a bloody nice car ! " I owned one briefly but mine was well past it sadly..I did only pay £50 for it, got a new engine from a scrapyard.....and 'somebody' stole the new engine from my backyard before I got the chance to fit it..scrap fairies they call them...grrrr.

Do you recall the view of flat bonnet and peaked wings from the driver's seat?

    • @cornishhh
      @cornishhh 4 года назад +2

I'm another 404 fan. I owned three saloons in the 80's and 90's in Australia. All were very cheap heaps that were full of rust but mechanically they were good. Yes; comfortable typically French seats, always reliable, and the superb column change that you could do most shifts with one finger extended from the steering wheel. The change on the pre 1966 cars wasn't as good though; or at least that on one owned by a friend wasn't.
I experienced a theft too. I came out to go to work one morning and one of the head lamps had gone! There was just a wire hanging. The most upsetting thing was that 404s were fairly rare by this time and almost all owners waved and flashed lights. I hoped it wasn't one of them. IIRC a replacement from the scrapyard was $10 so no big deal.
They seemed to be very susceptible to having decent tyres. With Michelins the handling was superb, but I bought one with a mish mash of tyres which handled so badly I thought there was something wrong with it. A set of wheels with good Michelins from the scrapyard cost almost as much as the car, but it was well worth it.
Yes I wish you could buy a car like a 404 today; even if it had a complicated eco-friendly engine. I drive a 205 today in the UK. I wish you could buy those too.

    • @kimkiriniki9433

Interested to learn that Peugeot had a built-in manifold way back in the 1960s. The 1.4 TSI engine fitted to VW/Audi/SEAT/Skoda models for most of this decade has the same design. It's meant to improve efficiency by allowing the coolant to get up to working temperature much quicker, as the water jacket is closer to the heat of the exhaust side of the manifold.

Circuits in cars are the worst nightmare ever - in case you are familiar with electrical circuits in your household and try to find something comparable in your car which is not existing... But I never saw a Ford before where you have to remove the light unit just to exchange a bulb...
The Peugeot 404 does not sound like ready for a test drive... I had the Peugeot 203 from 1949 for a couple of years and it was one of the most reliable cars I ever used, perfect for everyday use and holiday trips . The engine took unleaded fuel as if it was a modern car of the late 1980ies. If you go for oldtimers, go french :-)

HubNut, and anyone else, at 2mins 'cable ties': don't open the pack with a hole at one corner, everyone does this, and what happens is that all the ties gradually slip out, till eventually they're all out over the place, a constant nuisance. The clever way to open the pack is to use scissors ideally, but also a knife or fingers if need be, and the slit placed halfway and across the ties. Each tie can then be got at singly, pulling from its middle, and withdrawn. The remaining ties always remain in the pack, as if an opening were not there at all. Alan, in Norfolk, Blighty.

You coulda tried my Billy Bodgit brake light switch fix ,(circa 1991) .Rig up a hand operated switch! Just press button as you brake! Trouble was I ended up just pressing the button and forgetting to hit the brake pedal! That was a Ford too. '67 Mustang fastback ( wish I still had that one)

Sadly the cruise control needs an operating brake pedal mounting switch so it can cut off the system if Ian steps on the brakes.

Have you spotted a Ford Fairmont nearside headlight cluster during your many scrap yard adventures? Every time I see a front view of your car I'm always drawn to the UV damaged/foggy/faded unit that's currently in place.
It obviously shouldn't bother me as much as it does.
Other than that I love the car, especially that rear spoiler.
And of course I'm also loving the videos and the continued adventure.

Given you are driving with quite old cars, the breakdowns aren't very severe and/or frequent. Nice going on the Fairmont; maybe you can make a tiny hole in the headliner so you can spray some glue behind it with a straw. Looking forward to the Fuego video!!

Surprised that you had not packed a good screw driver and socket set into your holiday case , that’s a bad example to set Hub Nutters Ian. Great video for the next time I drive a Ford Fairmont with a dodgy brake light 😂👍

The Joys of Owning a Ford ( and I do, an Aussie model.)
In Oz many say that FORD, stands for "Fix or Repair Daily.!" or even more insulting "Found On Rubbish Dumps."
Neither of these insults, do I agree with. As I also own a Holden and that proves to be the Less reliable than my Ford.
It may be that my Ford is 29yrs Old and my Holden is only 12 yrs old. And there is Less reliance on 'Computer Shite' in my Old Ford.
Which was Found in a Shed and Unloved..!! But my Ford is my Every Day car..!! And I love it..!
    Cheers all. 😎

Those 404's have a really unusual diff. They have a worm and worm wheel instead of a crown and pinion. If you ever change the oil it is absolutely critical that you use the correct stuff.

I've noticed that the Fairmont's steering wheel is quite similar to a mk1 Mondeo and Scorpio. The air vents are similar to a mk1 Focus. Some Fords whatever division has a hint of other models elsewhere.

Regarding cameras, you've picked up on why I wish to acquire a Sony RX0. Action cameras are good for many things but the RX0 can take an external microphone directly, which is a big plus. The huge price tag however is a big minus!

I had to install a new blower motor in my husband's Nissan Rogue earlier this year. When I was getting the old motor out and the new one in, I was in the driver's foot well and contorted (for me) and made some weird, loud noises.
ETA: You have to remove the accelerator and brake pedals, so once I got to that part, I was pretty committed. It's not like I could take it somewhere to get help with it. 🤣

I think the replacement may have to be replaced eventually, if so I'm going to try to get one of my younger cousins (with smaller hands) to help. I tried to take the seat out, it had a Torx head bolt that had a little rust in it and it stripped out before I could get it loose.
I'm a big fan of your content, from rural north Alabama. Cheers mate!

Gee my 1983 Ford Ranger Pick up truck (USA) had a brake light switch just like that, since I really didn't have that truck to long AND had to replace the switch when the truck was fairly young maybe that wasn't one of their better ideas. Gee a Peugeot with a genuine imitation plastic dash board, if it was the higher trim level it would be genuine imitation wood.
