- My larger Ficus religiosa has grown well over the summer and the branches are getting too long and skinny. I defoliate the tree to make my pruning decisions on the tree's structure.

dear Nigel, I've been following ur videos for about two years now and its been such a relaxing time doing so.
Thank you for all the love and hard work u put in these videos for us!
Thank you, I really enjoy making the videos!
"maybe they will go skiing" lol love it
Nigel Saunders: The Bob Ross of Bonsai.
That lower branch has been bothering me too. I like the new look.
I too like it much better now!
I recently started about five or six succulent bonsai's and I hope they go well. I love your videos. They are filled with great knowledge about the art of bonsai
Thanks, I have really grown to like the succulent bonsai, I'm sure yours will do well!
Well worth sharing with your subscribers. Both an interesting and valuable discussion. Marvelous tree.
Thank you David, I hope some day to be refining it, I'll have to live a long life to see that day!
Very beautiful tree! I have 4 ficus religiosa bonsai's. They're also one of few ficus, that are somewhat cold hardy.2 I got growing out of cabbage palm boots, they're epiphytes, invasive/exotics, that grow everywhere in Miami. They were very small when I got them, seedling sized, they're like 8yrs old now, the trunks on them are really starting to fatten up an get a nice size, flare, and taper. All ficus, are my favorite to work on, for bonsai! Keep up the great work! Love your videos!👌👍✌
Legend has it...Nigel will like this comment
Looking beautiful again Nigel! and I agree with the removal of that side branch too, she does look better now. But boy.....I'm glad I don't have to make those decisions lol! 👍😊💖
Thanks Karin, I'm looking every day for signs of new growth, nothing yet!
this is one of my favourite trees from your collection. it reminds me of Vietnam a lot.
Thank Haley, a nice compliment for the tree!
Maybe they'll go snowshoeing! I like the trunk on that tree as well. :)
Thank you Marysol, it's coming along, slowly but surely!
Looking great ! I think it looks better without that lower branch. This is one of my faves !
Thanks J, I can't wait to see the new shoots come out, I'll be sure to update!
Here is me sitting screaming cut it! CUT IT! CUUUUT IT!!! :P
We have to evaluate all the possibilities first, then patiently make a decision! It also must create a bit of tension!
@@TheBonsaiZone might be patience I lack, but I dont lack courage to cut ;)
Still nice to see, and I have started my grassula hobbit collection, so I can make a forrest of them :)
So many Big cuts! I look forward to seeing the regrowth update in a few months. 🌿
I'll keep everyone posted!
Great development
Thank you Manohar!
A saw in one there show to use a serrated knife and tap it along the branch ,it worked for me i got shoots coming from the small distress marks the knife left, you may knoe this ,I'm only new to this, your tutorials are great tfs.
Yes! Some Tropical trees do go dormant for summer, my Boswellia ameero frankincense tree just come out of dormancy here in Tampa.
Well done and entertaining as usual, thx for sharing.
Thank you, if you're happy, I'm happy!

@@TheBonsaiZone
Always looking forward to watching your videos 👍👌
Found a book about indoor bonsai in the house, dunno who brought it home or why, looks old, but well... I really wanna start a little bonsai now.
I hope you enjoy growing your tropical jungle, it is a lot of fun!
WOW! A spa day for the ficus religiosa. How fortunate for it! Thank goodness you removed that branch. I love the tall trunk on that tree. The final profile on that tree is INCREDIBLE! Just love it! Wondering how the animals are doing with the change in the weather. And, what are your continuing plans for the large greenhouse?
Thank you Pat, the tree is getting the primary structure set and it should look good as the new secondary branches emerge! The animals miss going outside when the weather is cold and rainy, but they stay nice and warm inside. The greenhouse will just be half an arc. I got half the posts in the ground this summer, but I ran out of time to get any more done this year. Spring will be back again and work will continue!
Very nice
Thank you, some day I hope it will have a nice canopy of leaves!
Hi Nigel i have been watching your vids for years. You have helped me develop my own style. Please could you do an update of the small ficus benjamina that had the trunk chop. Many thanks.
It is still doing well, i'll try and get a video out on it soon. Nice to hear you are developing a style!
I hope the scale insects have a good ski trip
Me too, I hope they enjoy their winter bio dome!
Foist to like
Thanks for the thumbs up!
Amazing video as always
👌👌👌...!!!
!!! Thanks!
in painting, there's "BOB ROSS"! In bonsai-ing, it's "NIGEL SAUNDERS", the
only thing is Nigel's hair's thinner! LOLZ
Thanks, I love watching Bob Ross paint!
@@TheBonsaiZone Welcome! new subscriber here from the Philippines ;)
Can you talk about how often you water your trees that stay outside over the winterin your next video
I can, I just pile snow up on top of the pots and when we get a thaw, it melts and waters the trees.
@@TheBonsaiZone thanks, I like the idea and will be doing that this winter.
hi there Niguel...just wondering i've almost watch all your video and yet I never seen a cascade style of your bonsai...do you have some of them?...nayway great video again...
Yes, I have a couple, a Lemon tree and a Cedar. I'll try and get some videos out on them.
A lot of our trees as well go dormant during the summer months to.
Thank you John, It's hard to understand tropical trees in Canada, everything is fighting you!
@@TheBonsaiZone , right you are , and also each area of Canada is so different to. My satsuki azalea has come in for the winter and is starting to bud out
FYI:
The "kink" that justified the low branch in the first place has now smoothed out, it seems.

"If in doubt, cut it out." I love it =D
Yes, I may even rotate the front of the tree once again, removing the branch above and the one below has opened up new possibilities!
Why don't you wire any of your trees?
He was saying in another vid that he perfers the let it grow natural look.
Wiring is too artificial and simple and risks scaring. He prefers the challenge of the clip and grow method
I want to get into the art of Bonsai, what tree should I start with (preferably indoor)? Could you also tell me what the best conditions would be for this specific type of tree and how I could maintain this tree. (
Thank you
Any kind of Ficus is good for starting into bonsai.
They are cheap, and easy to maintain. You will find them in regular garden centres.
If you keep the pot it's in when you buy it, be careful to not over-water it. If you get a bonsai pot for it, with good drainage you should water every other day, depending on what soil you use.
Give any bonsai as much sun as possible.
Ficuses are also fine with staying indoors all year round
i have lots of different ficus plants in my house. Do they have 2 be leave pruned aswell? what time of year is this best to do. Greetings from Holland
No they don't! That is an advanced technique for styling the tree. You shouldn't do it.
@@DragoTC why not? Is there a risk or a reason not to?
Hi Nigel. Do you wire your bonsai? Thanks😃
Only if he really needs to. He does clip and grow 98% of the time
Now that cannabis is legal can we expect a cannabis bonsai?
Probably not lol. They are quite sensitive and do not react well to pruning
Sorry, I'm more into the Aloe's!
@@TheBonsaiZone have you ever tried making a bonsai out of nepenthes? I have and they look amazing you you should try!!!
🍃🐛 . 👍
Thanks again Jan!
Has anyone ever tried chia grass in their bonsai
I'm not sure. it would make a good ground cover!
Nigel I'm gonna buy some nursery stock and give it a try. Can you send me your email address. So I can update you in the future
I'm 1 minute in and I know this is gonna be severe
As always!
Hi Nigel!
I have started to collect rainwater too. I am, however, most likely going to run out from time to time as I live in an apartement.
My question is:
Do you think that there is a lot of excess calcium in a forest stream? I live close to one.
The tap water here in Norway is not too bad, but I have noticed some white buildup on my tree trunks and leaves.
Thanks again for another video! =D
I think the stream water will have a lot of minerals and trace elements and it should be good for the trees as long as you aren't getting farm runoff of hot manure. I would try it and if you find mineral buildup switch to filtered water of distilled water. I sometimes have to melt ice and snow in winter when I run out of rain water.

Thanks Riki!

Close Mary, Scott got this one!
Scott Winnard, Let's do Bonsai good job Scott.. I had just got on... it’s difficult to tell when no likes... no views... all we can do is try... !!!
