This video shows a construction crew working on pouring a concrete wall for a foundation. They are setting up the formwork, drilling holes, mixing epoxy, and using a skid steer to move materials around the site. The crew discusses various challenges they are facing, such as bending rebar into the right shapes, dealing with obstructions, and ensuring the formwork is properly braced. They also discuss the reasons why they are doing the formwork themselves instead of hiring it out. Overall, the video provides a detailed look at the step-by-step process of constructing a concrete foundation.

Next time you guys do rebar work, you really really really need to send the drawings to a detailer. They will do a full take off and then cut, bend, and even assemble some stuff together for you so that its just place in the correct location and go. Those square ties will come bent and all you do is tie them where they need to go. It costs something, but you will 10000% save more in time than it costs to have that done.

  • @yodaiam1000
    @yodaiam1000 3 месяца назад +70

The bent rebar is called a "tie". "Stirrups" are open one end and "ties" provide a closed loop. To save a bunch of time, you can order the ties from suppliers all bent into shape. It doesn't even cost that much more. Although it was worth entertainment value.

Jamie, you're so much fun! I absolutely love your sense of humor (and your puns!!). And you have the cutest smile! (I'm nearly 80 years old.....you could be my grandson!!) But more than all of that, I learn so much from you. And don't let them keep you from talking! Your creativity is off the charts. I love how you explain all the things you're doing and why and thanks for drawing all the little things you draw on the odd piece of wood to help explain them. You and your crew do exceptional, I say, EXCEPTIONAL work. Your homes are beautiful.......and it's great that you are a perfectionist where it really counts. If you were in my neck of the woods, I'd hire you to build a home for me! But, alas, I'm in Washington State. Thanks for your videos, too. Eric, you do a GREAT job with those!

Yes, they are stirrups, and typically would be ordered through a rebar supplier ( whitecap, HD Supply, etc...) usually they can have them within 1-3 days depending on order size, how busy, etc... Much more cost effective and accurate than trying to make them yourself.

    • @yodaiam1000
      @yodaiam1000 3 месяца назад +3

Call them "ties" to be more precise. Technically stirrups are open one end but people use the terms interchangeably.

He made it look so easy and after the hour was up he would let go of the rope, we would pick him up and we would call it a day. I could ride one foot no matter how much I watched him. Lol

We always drop a surveyors pin in all our corners before all the rebar and supplies get in the way. Don't over tight the pins too it will screw up the straightening of the wall and can also cause the ties to zipper. That's bad bad bad. Oh ya, spray the panels lying on the ground. Then, put them up. Oil on the rebar is bad.
Tie the hoops temporarily in the wall. Feed the straight bars through them and into the holes.
Your turn buckles need to be at 45 degrees, brother. Otherwise the wall will move alot

Makes me realize how crazy streamlined building here in NL is, we get specialist crews for every part of the work, with equipment and tools up the wazoo banging out jobs like it's going out of style. "Doing it all" is still the best way, very entertaining to see how you all handle it.

Number 1, good thing you you dried it out. About the drill getting wet, It's okay to spray WD40 on the mechanical side just don't let it get to the electricals because it might cause a short. For the electricals, it would be best to use contact cleaner spray and blow dry the whole thing again. It may work at the time you needed it but it may not turn on next time. It's best to clean the circuit board and other electricals with a contact cleaner with an old soft toothbrush. Lastly, make sure the whole thing is completely dry before turning it on.

Had that exact thing happen with epoxy hardening not 2 weeks back. Was helping a friend with a covered porch. He was epoxing bolts to hold the post base down. Well he got a call as well and it was hard as a rock, just as quickly after the very first hole . I tried cutting the tip back just a bit to hopefully get some use out it. But it was rock hard . So had to hand mixed it as well. I was going to use a putty knife as well. But found a cheap plastic sheetrock knife. That was sacrificed to get it done.
Always something new to learn. And almost always a work around if you get into trouble.
    Luckily not as mission critical.

Pro tip bending rebar or any metals.
Is it Inside or outside dimension.
    If inside- deduct nothing.
If it’s outside deduct the thickness of the material x2 per 90 bend.
So if you need a 1/2” 12x12 stirrup with a 6” over lap both side your rebar should be 55” and your bending at 1/2 short on the inside of the bend.

Maybe next time, before pouring the footings place the vertical starter bars inside the footings cage reinforcements, do an L shape at the base of the starter, and then square and profile the starter bars to ensure they are aligned correctly within the wall outline, then tie it in place and then concrete the footings.. When the footings are set the starter bars are fixed inside the dried and cured footings so you just lap the continued bars for the entire wall heights. No need to drill the starters and apply epoxy.

For those who are interested, the correct and full saying goes like this...
    "Who ask don't get,
    who don't ask don't want.
    Who don't want don't get,
    who don't get don't care".
That saying comes from Merle Hodge, although the original, which was later added to by Hodge came from Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi was famous for a great many things and sayings such as...
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."
    And
"My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my god."
    And
"Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes."
Here is one you Americans will be very familiar with...
"An eye for an eye." That quote is usually taken from the Bible, but the full quote is. "An eye for an eye will only make the world blind." Mahatma Gandhi.
But my favourite two quotes and probably most quoted after an eye for an eye are, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow."
And finally, although im British, a great lady came up with this one whose name is Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, who said...
"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." I love that one.
    Great work, guys.😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚒️

Are Superior Walls a thing in your area? More than half of the new construction I see in PA gets a Superior Wall foundation. Pre cast and insulated panels set by the manufacturer and a boom truck on a footer of clean stone with a french drain system around the outside. There is a blocking detail that has blocks in the first 2 or 3 joist bays and the floor needs poured before backfill but thats about it.

If you bend.your own stirrups, aometimes its easier to bend 2 C bars. You use more steel, but you move faster. Ordering bent bars can take up a lot of management time.

I’ve used that epoxy that you’re using. If you would actually read the directions, then you would know it sets up real fast. When using it, you don’t have much time to use it all. You don’t have time to do a lot of talking. In fact, you should do all of your talking about that epoxy before you start using it. From the moment you start mixing it in the nozzle, you have about 10 to 15 minutes to actually use the stuff or it will have set up and you are starting all over again.

What drives the decision between using the forms or using a stacked Styrofoam block which stays in place and provides insulation? Seems like the block would be easier and faster.

Why are you guys using epoxy for the pier rebar? Wouldn't it have been easier to cast the vertical bars when the footings were being poured?

If the rings are slightly to big fit them on the diagonal, once there wired in there good to go. Concrete hides plenty of mistakes.

Epoxy mixing nozzles should be about 2 for 1 dollar - nowhere near $10 each - I buy them in bulk for about that price for 6” long nozzles - basically use a new one with every cartridge, and if left sitting for a while, then more than one nozzle per cartridge .
