  • Hiking in the footsteps of Carl Sandburg. Carl Sandburg was called the “Peoples Poet.” His poems had a simplicity and common sense about them as did the man. In the final chapter of his life, he moved from Midwest to the south, to Flat Rock North Carolina. He purchased a home built in 1838 along with two hundred forty-six acres where his wife could raise goats. Today, it is owned by the National Park Service. Visitors can tour the house which was left virtually as it was when he passed away in 1967. It’s also a wonderful place to walk as well. There are five miles of well-maintained forested trails on the property. There’s something special perhaps even sacred about walking in the woods. Walking in a wild place restores your inner peace. It’s relaxing and restorative. It’s a place to draw a fresh breath and fresh insights. Sandburg left a legacy of words and he also left a legacy of place for generations to come.
