Hi Hazel, I agree, when you purchase an "old" book(s) and they have an air of.....I don't know......musty/mildewy smell!?! It really turns me off! 😝. I hope your experiments work. 🤗. Those 100 yr old books were a great find!
I think it depends on how acute one's sense of smell is, Ruth. It repulses me so I'll keep hunting for a solution. Someone in the comments mentioned a sliced apple in a bag....not sure. H
This is a great topic as I am sure most of us have gone through this very thing and have tried lots of things. I have thrown out many books because of the smell, now I am careful to just not bring any home with out smelling them. And yes some things seem to work on some occasions but not others.
Hi Hazel! I’ve successfully used apples to deodorize smoky paper. :) Slice the apple in half, place next to the paper in a sealed container. I check every few days until I’m happy w/the new (lack of) scent. Happy deodorizing!
Hi Tammy, so just to be clear----the apple is in contact with the paper in a sealed container? I, of course would want to get more for my money and do bigger batches of stinky paper so I'd be tempted to do apple slices. Do you think that would work? There's also a viewer question about does it dry out rather than molding? Inquiring minds want to know!!! Thanks for offering another suggestion, H
Hi Hazel💕 Thank you for the video, I'm finding myself more and more sensitive to old book smells. I used to sell candles back in the day and it changed my sense of smell. My noise burns now with candles, perfume, etc. When we go to the store or out to eat I can't sit near anyone that had bathed in the stuff. I immediately get a migraine and they are not fun. Cigarette is the worst for me, my dad had to quit about 7 years ago because his lung collapsed and he started smoke at age 15. I wish there was an easy quick solution because there are so many amazing books out there to save. Hope you are having a good week, take good care. 🥰Big hugs🐦🦋🥀
Hi Celeste, it's no accident that a lot of workplaces and offices are now scent-free because some people do get carried away. It doesn't seem to matter if it's a 'good' smell like perfume or a toxic one like smoke---they all bother me & by the looks of it, I'm not alone. Thanks care! H
Hi Carol, it's funny. I'm the only one in my family with a 'working nose'---the rest of them can't smell a darn thing. Thar's both a blessing & curse. I notice you didn't offer a fail safe solution for stinky papers....awww. H
I love those books Hazel! Just beauteous! Hugs!
Hi Sandy, I'm inclined to think you love anything with 2 covers & some papers sandwiched inside! But your taste is far more discerning that that! H

I'll scream it from the roof tops! Hugs, H

So I'm not the only book sniffer out there! Yes, not spending time & money on them in the first place makes the most sense. H

Interesting! Does the apple just dry out? Not mold or anything?
