- Well here's something different! Welcome to the Japan Edition of Retro Commercials! This set of ads comes from a 1993 tape recording of various televised car racing events from Japan (recorded from a Japanese TV station). Now, correct me if I'm wrong, I'm pretty sure that most of you will not be familiar with the content or have fond memories of such and such commercial, but I gotta say, this stuff is pretty darn entertaining. Even if the language is 'lost in translation'. I loved this period of ads from Japan. I used to live there in the 90's. Around this time, Japan has shifted gears in the style of their ads. In your face, funny, colorful and full of energy. To this day, Japan continues with this ad style, but even more on edge. Enjoy! -Dave
I lived in Tokyo in the early 90s. I used to watch a lot of TV to help with my Japanese. I can say that I clearly remember every single one of these commercials!
Did you ever watch the reality show me and my family were on? It came out in the early 1990s, I don’t even know much about it, I believe it might have been called the Glenn Scannell show. It was about an American family in the Bay Area. I have mental health issues, I play video games(Nintendo) drink coffee, play a music keyboard, do a lot of hanging out with my BMX bicycle or my Mountain Bike acting crazy! Spending time with family or friends at a coffee shop, gas station or store, interest in art & martial arts. I smoke cigarettes in some episodes not many. we lived in a one story house then moved into a two story house, I am short, clean shaven usually, w/ dark brown hair, now some grey hair, often heavyset, I was 27 in the first episode. It was unscripted, often I didn’t know I was being filmed.
Many young people seem to think the 1990s happened so long ago, but for me it was only yesterday.
feels so nostalgic even though I wasn't born back then
there is something in these 90s ads that calm a person down which I didn't find in todays ads

Japanese commercials are really fun and calming to watch
Many people find these old compilations nostalgic, although they weren't even born yet. I guess one reason is, that most of us grew up in the early-mid 2000s, and the quality of commercials never really changed between the 90s and the 2000s. Anothe reason is, that Japan is always ahead of other countries, so products being advertised in the 90s of Japan, may have been introduced in the 2000s and early 2010s in the rest of the world. Commercials of other countries can also appeal nostalgic, but this could be because Ads often run for years and years, without changing much. So a person like me, being born in 2001 could've easily seen some ads that already ran in the mid-late 90s (at least in Germany that's the case).
Japan never left the 90's
@Mr. Memeist yea so ahead they were still smoking inside until the late 90s
@@chiralei The third largest economy in the world after 30 years of stagnation, what are the rest of the world doing?
The growth in China and India has been tremendous, though.
the 90s is alive in port.... Japan
They were already ahead of time in the 90s
Yes.
They really got Harrison Ford for a beer commercial, Japan knows how to sell products!
Really diggin' the japanese commercials. I have no clue what they are saying but I still thoroughly enjoy this edition!
was....was that harrison ford?
Desu ne...
In Japan in the 1990s there were TV commercials with Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charlie Sheen, Kevin Costner... I believe there was always a clause in their contracts that said that the ads would not be shown in the USA because it would damage their reputations. In Japan celebrities often appear in ads. They have a different attitude towards them.
vejolta hai!
@@carolinewiggins2803 and they weren't shown in the US because none of these products were available here
@@Ozzymandias493 Hi there; I didn't explain it very well. Wikipedia's Foreign Celebrity Advertising page explains what I was trying to get at and failed.
I lived in Okinawa in the early 80's , and I remember a few funny ads, but mostly just household stuff that wasn't very interesting to a 7 year old with no language skills... , but I sure loved the American ads when we came back!!! I think that's why I subscribe to these retro commercial channels
Hehe, I can totally relate. I lived in Okinawa as well for a few years in the late 90's. :D
Cuz u r not Asian
Oh.
1:01 is that Fordson Harris? After seeing this commercial, Sofia Copola's movie "Lost in Translation" makes even more sense to me!
For relaxing times make it suntory time.
Yeah, hollywood stars have being doing Japanese ads(often goofy ones) for a long time, presumably paid well and would barely have been seen outside Japan until internet access became common. eg Schwarzenegger:

01:46 - lol at the Japanese rendition of 'turkey in the straw'... Wonder what the lyrics were? Must not have been great cause they didn't riff on it very long... That having been said, those beef curry sauces are soooo good. I fix one at least every two weeks. I'd say it's the only Japanese dish I've really gotten good at, that I can ace every time.

Good compilation. Does anyone know if the music featured in the Looney Tunes ad was based off of a song or if it was just written for the commercial? It sounded cool.

Who else out here combing through old commercials looking for the lost song “ulterior motives” ?
Hey people!
Could someone explain me how that's possible to have an HD quality footage out of a VHS or Beta Tape? The quality in either of those are pretty bad compared to the video I see here.
There are a couple reasons in play. I am able to capture my footage at a very high data rate using Prores and special equipment. The other reason is that these commercials were recorded on Beta ED (Enhanced Definition) tapes. This provides improved image quality and definition, as well as 550 lines of resolution (which is better than DVD). Thanks for watching!
@@DavesArchives Dear Dave, thank you so much for your answer! I had no idea about Beta ED. Wow, that format is indeed very interesting! Better than DVD!! I'd be glad if you could explain a bit more about Prores and the special equipment that you're using. I guess I and many people would appreciate if you could make a video teaching us how to extract good quality videos from old tapes. I absolutely have no time to do it now, however perhaps in the future, that could be a great hobby of mine!
Thanks a lot for the great content btw! I really enjoy watching your videos!!
Thanks and Kind Regards
@@deniz7559 Definitely. ED technology was primarily used in the Japanese market. It was introduced in late '88 which was the time most US consumers had shifted to VHS. But Beta was still strong in Japan, thus the improvement of Beta technology. Beta ED used a special metal formula that consisted of fine particles on the surface of the tape. This allowed for much higher resolution, improved detail, color reproduction and audio quality. The Beta ED technology was borrowed from Sony's Betacam SP tape formula which was used in broadcast, news, and TV.
@@DavesArchives Thank you so much for this great and very interesting information!! Now I started to search for Beta ED footage on RUclips. There are a few but the quality is amazing! May I ask you how come you have these tapes? I guess you've lived in Japan in those times and had the Beta ED equipment? By the way, I can't wait to see your tutorial video how to extract VHS video onto digital format!!!
Regards!

@ 1:01 Hey!
Anyone have the song name to the PIZZA LA commercials at the end?
m.ruclips.net/video/0XEJ0kwiIPg/видео.html
I googled that pizza-la ( combo of pizza and Godzilla, so it really should be called pizz-illa) and they are huge! Franchises in 34 of 47 prefectures.. I've worked pizza for about 5 years in the early 90's and I can tell you pizza-la doesn't know shit about what pizza is. Completely absurd toppings. It really shouldn't be called pizza. It should be called 'what we heard America eats on a shitty flat bread' and they average $30!!!
I liked replaying 3:26 and looking at how each person delivered the line.
