Lea Salonga the pride of the Philippines in Theatre. She won both the Lawrence Olivier awards and Tony awards for her role in Miss Saigon. An offiicial Disney princess legend being the singing voice behind Jasmine in Alladin and Mulan. You guys should check out her performance of The movie in my mind with Rachelle Ann Go (another Filipina who made her name at West End) during the 25th anniversary of Ms Saigon.
Her being subtle elitist is what I hate the most about her. She commented badly about all Aldub viewers who are not as 'cultured' as her audiences who are the culture vultures not the common people who watched Aldub fame of Eat Bulaga. She lacks EQ at her age of 40+ then! Look at her now for all this year she never get the National Artist award even if she won almost all stage awards abroad. Karma is digital now.
Lea was the first Asian/non-Caucasian woman to play Eponine on Broadway in 1993. And she was asked to take part in the LES MIZ 10th anniversary Dream cast concert in 1995 (the performance you just reacted to here). I’m pretty sure she was the only non-white actor in the main cast. Later, Lea did the role of Fantine in the broadway revival in 2007 and reprised that role for the 25th anniversary concert. I ADORE Lea and I hope you react to more of her performances!!! Check out Lea Salonga and Regine Velasquez doing a musical medley. Two of the best singers from the Philippines!
Lea's voice timbre, her clear pronunciation is what sets her apart from others. She's a great story teller and you can really understand what she's singing....goosebumps. Musical theater is take one, no take 2, 3...that's it. Thank you for reacting to Lea, one of my favorites.
I applaud that the producer recognized Lea’s mouth movements - that it is part of musical theatre training; mouthing off vowel sounds. In other reaction videos, people have negative comments about it - which goes to show they are not live theatre fans. Lea has been doing MT since she was 4 - the girl was a seasoned performer before she auditioned for miss Saigon - a role that was made for her as fate would have it. I’ve beeen fortunate enough to watch different performances of Les Miserables and Lea is the golden standard for Eponine.
Salute to Baby Barredo and Zenaida Amador, two terrific Filipina artists of Repertory Philippines. They helped shaped Lea Salonga to what she is now. God Bless their wonderful souls!
Yey! Finally, if I have an ultimate bias aside from SB19, it's Lea Salonga. She simply is the best with that crystal clear voice. I've been listening to her since I was 2, her Small Voice era. It was a dream come true watching her in Miss Saigon in Manila. Love her so much!
You can really tell this is Josh's element because of the "love" you see in his eyes and that permanent smile while watching this - the epitome of a perfect musical performance 😍💜🇵🇭
Magnificent. Lea has not only a beautiful voice, but delivers a perfect Master Class in Musical Theatre performance, every note, expression, gesture with finely tuned power, nuance, emotion and storytelling. And to deliver this, { to engage the audience and bring them along with her on that journey of love and loss } purely on her own, in a huge concert hall, not a theatre, no props, no set; just her, the orchestra and the spotlight. 'tis a masterpiece.
🍇🏁Josh's passion for musical theater is clearly evident in his reaction and analysis of Lea's vocal technique and performance here. I always appreciate your recognition of musical talents from the Philippines. As I've watched a number of your reaction videos and enjoyed the banter, I guess a podcast is the natural progression of what you two have been doing. If at all possible, wouldn't it be nice to actually have these artists you feature on your channel as guests in your podcast?
im a filipino, and two music artists that i really love--LEA SALONGA for her perfect pitch and prestine voice, and KZ TANDINGAN for her music artistry, versatility, and creativity. u can try commenting on some of kz's cover songs from the singer 2018 competition. she can do pop, rap, blues, and jazz.
the first actress of Asian descent to play the roles of Éponine and Fantine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway. Her tone is cystal clear, her ennunciation is impreccable. The Philiippines is so proud of her.
A Filipino Great. A living icon in the global theatrical stage. She has nothing left to prove in the Philippines and abroad. And she's still kicking ass! That's Lea Salonga, an OPM legend. 🔥Thanks for your RV!
Lea Salonga is one of the few artists in the Ph that give me goosebumps when I hear her sing no matter what song she sings! The other artists are Regine Velasquez, Morissette, Katrina Velarde & SB19 😊 I really enjoy your discussions during your RVs, aside from being entertaining it's also informative. Thank you Josh & Lucas!
Lea Solanga is one of the best musical theatre singers I have ever seen. Her enunciation and diction are impeccable. Her voice is iconic. She is one of the few people that have voiced 2 Disney princesses (Jasmine and Mulan). She is a national treasure. She also served as a coach on the Voice Philippines. She was a coach when Morissette competed. Love Lea!
🍇🇵🇭 thanks for your RV to Ms. Lea Salonga 🥰 I really love her voice and the way she sings 🤩 Thank you so much Josh and Lucas ❤ I really enjoy watching you guys, your conversations, your comments, facial expressions and of course we learn so much 😉
Thanks so much for featuring our very own pride and treasure, the Disney legend Ms Lea Salonga.. More of her and her performances please and more power!!❤❤❤🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Ohhh goosebumps. I always crying once I hear Lea sing this. She's soooo... good. She's Filipinos pride. A legend. ❤❤❤ Thanks "po" for reacting this video. Mabuhay kayo!!!! Watching from Riyadh
🍇🇵🇭 I clicked so fast when I saw this in my feed! This is my fave Lea Salonga performance on YT. On a side note: you guys are so relatable. 😊 I like it when you talk real stuff. At first I was scared to hear Josh's confession (not sure if I was ready for it) but after hearing it I was like aww that is sweet. I feel the same! I appreciate how Lucas shows kindness and support for Josh's openness and honesty. It's a heartwarming interaction. That being said, I think a podcast would be a fun idea! Keep up the great work! ❤
"People like this exist" Yeah so true, shes surreal in that performance 👑 Actually her technique is from traditional Filipino Voice Lessons, Where you have to sound clear, pronounce and enunciate words correctly. Filipino/Tagalog language is pronounced that way, You will notice that in classic Filipino singers. And Im sure if what im saying.
that line "that i have ever known".... others played it like it was a celebration, singing it at the top of their voice, when it should have been a desperation, which is how lea showed here. btw years later, the production invited lea back for the 25th anniversary to play the other female lead, fantine.
Exactly. When others belt (or scream) that part, it's like they're feeling triumphant which makes no sense. She is saying "a world that's full of happiness that I have never known." It's such a heartbreakingly sad lyric. It's not supposed to be your one great moment in the sun like "and nobody in all of Oz is ever gonna bring me down, bring me down!" in Defying Gravity. She's finally accepted that her love is never gonna be returned. She is giving up.
This performance is truly mesmerizing - no many how many times you watch it. The clarity of her voice and the words, the roller coaster ride her voice takes you on - being lost in her dreams of him, then waking to reality, but knowing she still loves him. And through it all, it sounds beautiful and effortless.
You've found the gold standard of this song, sung by the queen of Broadway. Lea Salonga is THE Eponine, and every time somebody is mentioning this song you immidiately think of this performance. That's how good she is, and although this performance is from the mid 90s her voice is still as fantastic as it used to be.
Honestly Lea is one of the best when it comes to stage (her control is crazy good). but you should also check Nadia Nikolaichuk (she has perfect pitch, if u want to tune a piano to her) or one of the most under rated singers of all time Karen Carpenter
Agreed. Live singing and the way show tunes lyric's and music compositions are made, they just go straight for the emotions. hard not to appreciate live music theatre.
Lea is a world class. There are more videos in RUclips you can get into a rabbit hole with Lea’s performances. In fact there is a video of her and Darren Chris (also a half Filipino American performer) and L.Manuel Miranda jamming in NYC!
For me, the performance of A Little Fall of Rain from this same concert, was one of her best. Her performance for the Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary concert too. So good!
Those times whenever i watch Lea Salonga’s live performances, especially Miss Saigon, i was having goosebumps because her voice is really piercing, so pure and full of emotions! Same with Regine Velasquez. We Filipinos are lucky to have top tier artists like them.
thank you so much for listening to her.... she is a LEGEND! I COULD SEE HOW SHE CATCHES YOUR ATTENTION TO WHAT SHE IS SINGING! Just beautiful and amazing rendition by Ms Lea S. To think that she was a subject of prejudice/biases, where she was denied roles because she is Asian! Well, the Tony Awards she got tell all.
Lea is a master of her craft. Truly a gem indeed. And I can see the guy in red has BTS and ARMY logo tattoo. Shouting borahae to him! 💜 I am an ARMY from the Philippines.
Please feature Lea too in her solo of DONT CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA and her duet with Simon Bowman SUN AND MOON from Miss Saigon on Lea’s 40th anniversary concert.
the facial expression, emotions, lea internalised her role as kim. they dot make singers like lea anymore. she sang from the heart. nowadays most popular singers are screamers, that's not singing.
The producers of Miss Saigon searched a couple of countries to find the lead for the musical-until they reached the Philippines. Not only did they find the lead (Lea Salonga) and the understudy (Monique Wilson), they also hired more than half of the cast, and flew them to London.
Looking forward to hear you both sing theatre, not seconds but a minute long. 😁 Seriously, I would love to listen to your acts..😊 You're loving the Philippines! Cheers to you both.
Pls chk out Lea Salonga & Michael Ball's A LITTLE FALL OF RAIN which is also part of this same show. Also more Gigi de Lana please, her ALL I ASK (Adele), & Lyka Estrella (recent winner of TNT) singing HINDI TAYO PUWEDE on Nol Trawz Vevo's channel.
Growing up, my mom bought the vhs tapes-yes tapes-of this performance from a PBS special and I would sit in front the tv and watch this song over and over as a 9 year old. I remember in high school if I was in the performing arts area I was the “popular” kid. I performed in four choirs, with the jazz band, musical theatre, was a class aid for the younger choirs, took theory and was the music librarian-you know, the cool one. But if you found me anywhere else in the school I was quiet and kept to myself. My teachers used to ask my mom if I was antisocial and she would be so confused.
i love you Leah. i did when we were young, i still do. I loved a song here in the Philippines long ago, that i didn't know who sang till Leah became a star from Miss Saigon. Becoz it was her who sang the song.
Love your astonished and sometimes funny reactions & comments. Yup, Lea IS THE ultimate singer-pride of the Philippines, esp. having won the Tony & Lawrence Olivier Awards for her role in Ms. Saigon. Many theater actors have more powerful, loud voices; but her performances are the perfect mix/blend of strength and flawless transition to soft, emotional, yet with crystal clear voice & utmost clarity of the lyrics.
🍇🏳Yay this was one of my suggestions for a Lea reaction. She still sound like this today, despite growing older. She is one of my all time favorites. She is just super awesome! Looking forwad to your podcast.
Hi Josh and Lucas, I love your reactions and you guys have a good tandem and plus you're funny. I mean great sense of humor.. and I saw your army tatts 💜.. Ms. Lea is a national treasure. Been acting in theater since she was a kid. Acted in Sound of Music and Annie for Repertory Philippines and was part of a variety show before she auditioned for Les Mis when she was 17-18.. love your reactions, will be coming for more from now on. Borahae
As always, I find both your reactions as that of the musically learned ones. Informative, factual, experience-based as well as entertaining with your being awed by these Filipino talents. Ms. Lea's "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" ... next please? Thanks
Watched this Broadway Musical in NY....from the long standing show of all times... Les Miserables ...!!! .Don't know if it still exist until now..She got so many awards including Phantom of the Opera, Ms. Saigon & Lion king !!!
Im not an expert in music but that last bit felt like her voice was carrying that last word like it was all the weight of the world and she had to throw it over to the end of theater... but instead of throwing it, she sort of made it weightless and just sailed it towards everybody in their seats.
React to Klarisse de Guzman's performances in Your face sounds familiar as Patti LaBelle, as Mariah Carey, as Minnie Ripperton, as Anne Wilson, as Aretha Franklin and as Tom Jones. Brilliant artist and so versatile
this is the time where Lea was facing racial discrimination in the musical theatre, where they won't even see her because she was asian, but when she was invited to be play this song, she mention that she has to work much harder than her role in Miss Saigon (Kim) so that she can prove to them she can do it, so no one can criticize her, as people were just waiting to see her fall, she has to sing greatly for the days during the event to show everyone talent has no nationality. as proof this video just show how perfect her singing was.
Her diction is absolutely the best in the business. You can hear every consonant, and her vowel modulations are perfection.
Lea Salonga the pride of the Philippines in Theatre. She won both the Lawrence Olivier awards and Tony awards for her role in Miss Saigon. Yep, they did it during the Covid lockdown.

@@labellavita12 Yes, I believe it was part of #OneNightWithRegine online mini-concert for Regine's bday in 2020!

Lea Salonga's performance as Fantine in the 25th Anniversary of Les Mix is jaw dropping. Love your appreciation of her!
I love Lea but Fantine's role is immortalised by Ruthie Henshall.
