    I was a lifeguard here in the early '90s while in High School. While the deaths are greatly exaggerated on a relative basis (4/100,000ths of a percent if you assume 15MM visitors over the 18 yrs the park was open. This number is actually low relative to the number of skier/snowboarder deaths that occur every year which was part of the owners rationale) it was definitely a case of the inmates running the asylum as the lifeguards were almost entirely hormonally charged high school kids who were "distracted" at best or "dosed" at worst and the head guy was maybe all of 24. Things didn't get really bad until people from the City who couldn't swim started arriving by the bus load. They would hop right in the wave pool, nearly drown and then be marked as "CFSs" - Can't F'ing Swim. Did this stop them from jumping right back in? Of course not.
    What you see at 9:51 was called Surf Hill. The right two lanes, which had a huge kicker at the bottom, would launch people about 6 feet in the air. They would be totally out of control and land hard which lead to a lot of dislocated shoulders and the like. We actually used to sit at the bottom just to watch the epic wipe outs. These lanes were often closed in the later years and eventually the jump was removed altogether. Keep in mind that people WANTED this. They simply loved the intoxicating sense of danger which more often than not supplemented how intoxicated they actually were. There was beer served EVERYWHERE which was arguably the most irresponsible aspect of the place. The whole premise was that "you control the action at Action Park." Though "the action is beyond your control at Action Park" (particularly if you've downed 10 20oz beers in the blazing sun) would probably have been more appropriate.
    In the winter I was a chairlift operator...which was an equally ridiculous experience. Put a bunch of drunken morons wearing leather jackets, jeans and rental skis on a mountain (...let's be honest - a hill) covered with what was essentially ice - AT NIGHT - and you've got yourself an endless source of entertainment. To be clear, we genuinely did care for the safety of the visitors. The problem was - they didn't care for it themselves.

    The most infamous of the rides at Action Park was the Cannonball Loop-an enclosed waterslide with a complete vertical loop. According to one urban legend, when park owners sent a dummy doll on a test run of the ride, it came back with no head. Despite employees winding up with bloody noses and bruises, they opened the ride.

    • @johnfoltz8183

      I think it's very hard to appreciate how rough the ride, even in the incarnations following this one, were without riding this. All I CAN say is "i'm going to lightly bump into another raft at 5mph" is ignorant to the point of derp. This ride was rough, and still can be - I didn't go on this version, but the version that we have today at the current park (minus the alternate forks that the pre-Mountain Creek version had), trust me - there is a reason we have to wear helmets on it nowadays... people were clanking heads, I bet teeth were knocked out (I came close a few times), and the ferocity was such where you could get the momentum needed to make the raft ride the walls of the attraction.

      @@slimtim1782 Last time I was there, back a little over 4 years ago, when the Mulvihills were back in control and seriously trying to make it into "the Action Park it could have been" (fun, exciting, innovative, and a bit safer, unafraid to try new things, etc) I noticed that the path TO the fork is still sealed off, but the forks where the alternate paths rejoined were still there, and open, oddly.
      I remember some crazy things that visit... before going on a ride, my older brother and his friends walked up to me, and told me about having just witnessed a girl being assisted into a medical cart, who looked like she had smashed her face in on one of the rides in the roaring springs part of the park. Instantaneously, I thought "Yep, this place is Action Park again, haha" - also liked how the lifeguards still don't give a shit if you try to make your mat hop off the track on Surf Hill - kept riding the ride, and trying out the different lanes to see if I could get more air. XD

      At 42, I just returned to Action Park in August. The last time I was there was 1980, when I was 8. I wish I could have been there sometime between 1985 and 1996, I believe these were the best years for variety of slides, and _freedom_ like there never will be again.

    • @gsoltis29
      @gsoltis29 9 лет назад +4

      LakeNipissing I went every summer for about 4 years straight between the years of 83 and 87 I believe. I was lucky to have an older sister and brother in law who would take me and a friend every year down from CT. I remember the first year being not so great but every year they added rides that got sicker and sicker. There was a slide that had metal rollers and then slid into a pool of water. I saw someone come down that slide and hydro plain across the water and went right into the side of the pool. That dude got f&&ked up. My brother in law and I were riding the alpine slide - with me going down first. I had to stop because of people in front of me so he stopped about 20 feet behind me. Not but 30 seconds later someone came around the corner and plowed right into him They both got all kind of cuts and bruises. That was the last time we went :( By that time the loop slide was already shut down from injury. I think anyone who went there almost died at some point! The wave pool alone was enough to get you in trouble!

    • @LakeNipissing
      @LakeNipissing 9 лет назад +4

      ***** Dang, you were so lucky. Those were some of the best years for Action Park. They had the LOLA race cars, Surf Hill, Speed Boats, Alpine Slide, original DEEP version of the Tidal Wave Pool, and many of the slides and attractions which still exist today. The pattern of the waves generated in the wave pool are a recipe for exhaustion, and no surprise weaker swimmers were quickly overcome in the 8 FT deep end!

    God I miss this place, I wouldn’t be surprised if I was in this vid somewhere I was there so much. I never got hurt to badly, I did go off the track at the alpine slide once. My friend did the cliff dive and landed with his hands flat and they were red n swollen entire day. I remember flat chested girls would walk round with no tops on and the younger girls as well which was just weird cus they were with their parents. There was always an ambulance there everytime I went. Ahhh those were the days lol. Seriously miss this place though if I could go back in time to the late 80’s for just a day. I like how people act like those who are opposed to a place like this are angry about a few scrapes and bruises lol. You can get bruises from sleeping at a weird angle. Hell, my boyfriend nearly broke his toe at the last water park we went to cause he hit the floor of the pool in a weird way after doing one of the slides. My issue with this place is that people DIED, and not because they were breaking the rules or doing something stupid, either. Then the owner was just like... oh well. that's really shitty. I'm all about fun and a bit of danger if that's what it takes for you to have a good time. But an owner like that who takes no responsibility for causing the unnecessary deaths of multiple people? Fuck that.

The death issue was overblown a bit, but there was little doubt you felt some bumps and bruises the next day after going.

    1:50 - The Colorado River, probably in its first year of operation. Note that the rafts were long and skinny, thus leading to many traffic jams. A year or two later, they switched to the round, green rubber rafts, which I rode the River exclusively on. The green rafts weighed at least 40 pounds, and once obtained, had to be dragged, carried, or rolled to the top of the hill.
    Mountain Creek uses a modified ski lift to carry the rafts up the hill, thus eliminating the arduous task of getting the raft up the hill.
