Bailey Canyon is one of the most excellent runs in Colorado. The general nature is 'easy' creeking in a beautiful, forested wilderness canyon. Bailey is somewhat remote, low-volume, tight and technical. The three Class V rapids are tough to recognize, so your first run should be guided by a Bailey veteran.
There is a historic narrow gauge railroad grade that parallels the river providing a perfect scouting trail for all the rapids. One of the bridges you duck under dates from 1886! The trail on the old railroad grade changes sides of the river. From Four Falls to The Steeps section the trail is on river right, from Super Max to the take-out it is on river left.
After four miles of mellow Class II/III is Four-Falls, the first significant rapid (Class V, V+ if you run the first drop). Four Falls is located on private property. The landowners have been tolerant of paddlers in the past, but they have complained about paddlers urinating on the trail and leaving behind their broken boats. They have asked us to pee in the river, if necessary, and pack out what you pack in. Sounds reasonable. 99% of us will want to portage 1st fall, so we can't afford to lose access here!
The mile after Four Falls is collectively dubbed 'The Steeps', with numerous class III, IV, and IV+ rapids. This section can be very stressful for Bailey virgins, as Bailey veterans usually don't want to scout it! In the three miles from Four Falls to Deer Creek, the river drops 441 feet! After Deer Creek the significant gradient is over, but there are still 4+ miles with scattered Class III and IV rapids. This is far and away the most beautiful part of the run, so it's a great time to lean back, relax, and admire the granite domes and bedrock rapids. A fire raged through this section in 2000.

Great video. I've been retired from paddling for around 18 years. I wish I had the benefit of you tube back in those days. Watching you read lines and your technique would have been helpful and now I live vicariously through guys like and Dane. Makes me want to get back out there at 59.

Rivers of the Rockies, the water is always cold, just a beautiful area, enjoyed, noticed alot of people running Machnos out there, again ENJOYED.
Machno and nomads alphas ect are the boats for those rocky rivers and the code is a perfect CO boat I did use the scorch a lot and it worked but it’s hates rocks
Glad you had some good Bailey flows while you were out here. Nice run. I liked the emphasis on scouting, especially first falls. Most will walk that for obvious reasons when you see it. Glad you had safely set up.
Yeah if new runs I’m scouting everything I don’t usually put it in the videos but figured this one would help others paddling this so left the scouting in there also
It has been so cool watching you paddle out here in CO! I moved out here from Atlanta 20 years ago, really cool to see a SE boater come and pick apart rapids they have never seen and stomp them! It reminds me of the first time my wife and I ran that section blind.
Yeah I love it I always wish had more time I paddled almost every day but still felt I needed to do more CO one those places would have to do several years in a row to get all the goods thanks Jonny for watching
wow there are some pretty intense hydraulics on that section, head my heart racing just watching you but as always you just glided right through it.
Yeah I would consider this a fun creeking style run nothing to major but still fun this was a self guided on it I looked it up before going to get idea of it

I'd have to say the coolest/toughest is Upper Death in Glenwood Canyon. At one time it was the upper stretch of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River, but all of that has been underwater since the 1960's. I was part of the team that did the first and last descent of it, and I can't begin to tell what kind of a treasure was lost there. All the best whitewater and all the best habitat are lost under three lakes, two of which aren't even accessible. It is a total waste. Total.

Hhaha good eye and that’s the lettman nitro a new blade Seth brought in and we switched out the last bit of the run out he wanted to try the Gpower and I wanted to see what that nitro felt like
How was the Nitro compared to the crank shaft Lettmann?

You can definitely feel the gradient pick up in your video. Going from mild to yeah to yeeha! If your beeboppin around Colorado. Check out 11 mile canyon out of Lake George west of Colorado Springs.

Wade's starting to get into my territory now. Head over the Continental Divide and mess around in Gore Canyon and Glenwood Canyon just below the dam (Upper Death) and you'll be right in my old stomping grounds. I'll be dying to see video of there. I'm homesick and just missing it like nothing else.
This video looks like it was taken in the spring. That means you've probably been and gone. From what I've heard, it was a really dry winter and has also been dry so far this year, so by now the Colorado through Glenwood Canyon above the Shoshone power plant outlet will be too low to run. I'm hoping for some springtime footage from the Yampa and creeking around Steamboat, but that's probably a bit too much to hope for. If you post something from my home river the White (South Fork) I'll be in tears. It's not difficult water, but it's were home was for much of my life. I haven't seen it since my accident, and will never see it again, and god would I love to see footage of some folks running it. I grew up on the YZ Still Water Ranch and was driving down to Meeker when I got hit. Just below the Country Road 10 bridge is the sportiest part of the river. The rest of it is pretty gentle. There's some really fun water from Budge's, on through the Flat Tops Wilderness down to where our ranch started, but it's a hard job since the only time it's runnable is when Budge's is still snowed in, which means a long portage in from the South Fork Campground. It gives you an opportunity to scout the banks to see where the down timber is before running it. There's a lot of down timber in it owing in part to beetle kill starting in the 1920's and a fire which burned the area more recently. If I ever see video of anyone running that, I'll be bawling like a baby. That's home, but I'll never be able to go up there again. Because of the nature of my injuries, I'll probably never get out of this facility, much less out to the area where my heart is. I now live vicariously through the videos of other kayakers and backpackers, and though I can't smell the smells or feel the sensations of those times, I can remember them through videos like this, and will continue to do so for what little time I have left of this life.

@@WadeHarrison Below the outlet it's not much of a challenge. It would be a dawdle for you. Below the dam on the part they call "Upper Death" is a real challenge when it has water in it. Later in the year you can walk it. LOL! It would be a challenge for anyone when the water's running strong. My first two descents I turned turtle and then swam (not fun in that, I assure you). Finally figured out where the line was (there's one part where it's not as obvious as it might seem). Then they built the Interstate through there, dumped more boulders into the stream, and eade me learn it all over again! It didn't really change the level of the challenge, but definitely made it more fun, which is rare when humans mess with rivers. Usually when we use big equipment to change rivers it doesn't end well for the rivers or the people who love them. Exceptions do happen. Gotta say, the engineers who planned and built that stretch of Interstate listened to everyone and did a excellent job of creating a solution which was acceptable to almost everyone.
I see you've also joined the lap bag craze (usually a watershed bag). Could you detail why and what you keep in it and more importantly what do you do with it if you swim? Do you just let let it go or do you have a biner on it and then clip to your vest and swim?
@@powskier hahah no I’m not! 99% the time my bags are in the back behind the seat I was in and out on this run so much was a hassle. Watch any other videos and the bag is mostly in the stern. And I feel it’s not safe to have a bag up there but know a lot that do and when I do it’s clipped into the water bottle strap but don’t recommend anyone putting a bag up there

This is the Gpower and yes it’s still holding up well I use it for bigger flowing type rivers
Used to be my favorite run before I chilled out and stuck to Class IV and easier. Come for the big rapids and stay for the plentiful Class III-IV boogey water. You missed the "auto boof" rock at the bottom right of Deer Creek right after the slide move. That thing launches you.
When self-guiding, I'm sure going to miss some stuff here and there, I seen it on the right as I paddled past it and was like that looks like a good boof and thought about walking back up and running it again but was like nah I have 10000 boofs already in my life sure missing one will be ok.

I have heard some pretty bad beat downs there not in the sieve though my guess that could be very very bad if went to far left
What are the flows on this lap? Somewhere below 500cfs it looks like
I was told it was 430cfs when we put on don’t know what it was throughout the day

From an East Coast perspective, it kind of looks like the Upper Yough on steroids.
Yeah a mix of some Chattanooga creeks on there if you’re comfortable on upper yough and some chatt stuff you be fine on this one
Rescued? Are you certain it needed to be rescued? Do some research on this. Fawns often just lay down when threatened, mother moves away. The best move is to just move on. Now that the fawn has been handled by a human, the mother will reject it. Unless you are prepared to raise a deer, you've just stolen a deers child and ruined any chance of the fawn growing up to be a healthy wild animal.
