    As a musician, I can really relate to the process of finding your “voice.” And the wanting people to be able to identify your work without someone telling them, either by looking at a photo, listening to a song, etc. I grew up playing in punk bands, and while I love classic punk music, that wasn’t “my voice” and it took years to get to a point that I’m happy with my output.

    Reminds me of the book Steal Like an Artist and how our work is just combinations of what we’ve learned from those we admire/those whose work we admire

    Just eat and shut up - haha - that cracked me up because its sooooo my own experience. Your insight into imagination and not being able to have an original thought is profound. That's why when some new `guru' comes along with a new way of life for us all you know they're talking shit. And your insight about getting there being a journey is also a profound insight. How many of us give up when the going gets tough in any aspect of life.

    I am just an amateur photographer but I am also serious about finding my unique style. My latest advancement this year is that I could tell after a photoshoot if this is the direction I want go in the future or not. I had some “Oh yeah, this is it - I am getting closer.” moments. My next goal is to apply what I have learned to the next photoshoots. My goal also is to stop during a shot if I notice that I am going into the wrong direction. That is not easy.

    Completely agree 👍 . I also think the more time we spend online (mainly on instagram) the less creative we become as it is easy to be influenced by the work of other photographers.

    Love your Bauhaus Tomato shot, and a seriously great discussion on the process of visual understanding. Cecil Beaton would be in admiration.

    I did the coca cola brief with Karl and it was very eye opening. It was also a lot of fun to create it. I like your philosophy about it being the journey. It's so bang on.

      Totally agree, of all the photography white noise that's out there, Scott & Karl cut through the BS and deliver years of experience and knowledge often without the sugar coating which is greatly appreciated.

    This was great advice. I feel like everyone says that you have to find your style first, and start from there. This was encouraging, it will come with time.

    This may seem like a weird analogy... but if you look at the world of athletes, they train technique, technique, technique .... until one day that part of the brain is mastered, then they are free to play with STYLE
    You could apply it to any craft as well, technique as a foundation followed by freedom to express

    When EE Smith wrote Lensmen back in the 40s and 50s he got around the ‘unimaginable alien’ thing by making various races beyond the ability of the human mind and eye to really see (they’re trans dimensional) in effect saying ‘you can try to imagine what these are like, but you’d be wrong…’

    Do you think being 30 is too old to learn photography with no experience other than taking pictures on your phone? I've recently left my job because i'm very unhappy doing what I do, I have about 10k in savings I can invest in gear. And I also have a small safety net of military disability pay of about 1200 a month so I have a bit of freedom but i'm scared of taking the plunge because it's such a big price commitment to buy all the gear. Do you think if I shoot and practice every day for the next year that i could be at a decent level next year to actually start making a bit of money? i'm not looking to make 6 figures or anything, i'd be happy with making 1500 a month at least.

    • @TinHouseStudioUK
      @TinHouseStudioUK  2 года назад +2

      You can get everything you need secondhand for about £1500 + a computer if you don't already have one so don't blow £10k on camera gear, far better things to spend you money on.
