- This is a topic we have touched upon before, but I think its worth looking at from various different approaches. This weeks discussion is all about how to create original photographs are a commercial artist.

As a musician, I can really relate to the process of finding your “voice.” And the wanting people to be able to identify your work without someone telling them, either by looking at a photo, listening to a song, etc. I grew up playing in punk bands, and while I love classic punk music, that wasn’t “my voice” and it took years to get to a point that I’m happy with my output.
Reminds me of the book Steal Like an Artist and how our work is just combinations of what we’ve learned from those we admire/those whose work we admire
Thanks for the mention Scott!
Any time!
Took your lighting workshop ( lollipop bananas inverse square etc ) last year!! So happy to see you on YT! 👏🏼
Yay! Thank you!
Just eat and shut up - haha - that cracked me up because its sooooo my own experience. Your insight into imagination and not being able to have an original thought is profound. That's why when some new `guru' comes along with a new way of life for us all you know they're talking shit. And your insight about getting there being a journey is also a profound insight. How many of us give up when the going gets tough in any aspect of life.
I am just an amateur photographer but I am also serious about finding my unique style. My latest advancement this year is that I could tell after a photoshoot if this is the direction I want go in the future or not. I had some “Oh yeah, this is it - I am getting closer.” moments. My next goal is to apply what I have learned to the next photoshoots. My goal also is to stop during a shot if I notice that I am going into the wrong direction. That is not easy.
Completely agree 👍 . I also think the more time we spend online (mainly on instagram) the less creative we become as it is easy to be influenced by the work of other photographers.
These videos are delivering more than you know and quite helpful. I can think of many non UK superlatives but must say we’ll done!
Another no-nonsense to the point discussion. Brilliant. Forces me to review my work.
Love your Bauhaus Tomato shot, and a seriously great discussion on the process of visual understanding. Cecil Beaton would be in admiration.
Thanks
I did the coca cola brief with Karl and it was very eye opening. It was also a lot of fun to create it. I like your philosophy about it being the journey. It's so bang on.
You an Karl are the two most erudite truly working photographers on RUclips. Excellent work ethics and plain spoken. Always a treat.
Thanks 👍
Totally agree, of all the photography white noise that's out there, Scott & Karl cut through the BS and deliver years of experience and knowledge often without the sugar coating which is greatly appreciated.
This was great advice. I feel like everyone says that you have to find your style first, and start from there. This was encouraging, it will come with time.
this video looks relevant with you, because i saw your style shifting from your early youtube channel... so it's been 2 years since i saw your channel & i learn much from you scott. thank you for making this youtube video for free
Wow, thank you!
Word! Well said my man!
Great way of explaining a difficult concept.
I hope to be this good. you are so right, its extremely hard to have a recognisable style. I can recognise Lindsay Adler work even when blindfolded.
I never thought i'll see you smile or laugh in a video, keep it going, it suits you.
that was great.. subbed & cheers for that
Awesome, thank you!
Being unique is FAR more important than aiming for some nebulous 'be best' goal - great vid!
Absolutely!
Great points. 🤘
Glad you enjoyed it
Another excellent video.
Yeah, I've participated in bunch of the "working to a brief" challenges over at Karl Taylor Education. It's fun and I always learn something.
Yeah they are a great idea and I think they work really well
I like the new thumbnail style, thank you for sharing what inspires you in a very specific way that can be apply globally to any culture, finding inspiration is a very tricky thing.
Glad you like it! I havent got a clue what im doing with thumbnails so trying a few new things atm.
Great advice 💪🏼
Got to love spaghetti hoops
This may seem like a weird analogy... but if you look at the world of athletes, they train technique, technique, technique .... until one day that part of the brain is mastered, then they are free to play with STYLE
You could apply it to any craft as well, technique as a foundation followed by freedom to express
Yes I very much buy into this ethos. Although I spent up until 23 years of age being 100% sporty haha
When EE Smith wrote Lensmen back in the 40s and 50s he got around the ‘unimaginable alien’ thing by making various races beyond the ability of the human mind and eye to really see (they’re trans dimensional) in effect saying ‘you can try to imagine what these are like, but you’d be wrong…’
i like this video
Finding your voice!
Do you think being 30 is too old to learn photography with no experience other than taking pictures on your phone? I've recently left my job because i'm very unhappy doing what I do, I have about 10k in savings I can invest in gear. And I also have a small safety net of military disability pay of about 1200 a month so I have a bit of freedom but i'm scared of taking the plunge because it's such a big price commitment to buy all the gear. Do you think if I shoot and practice every day for the next year that i could be at a decent level next year to actually start making a bit of money? i'm not looking to make 6 figures or anything, i'd be happy with making 1500 a month at least.
You can get everything you need secondhand for about £1500 + a computer if you don't already have one so don't blow £10k on camera gear, far better things to spend you money on.
@@TinHouseStudioUK thanks for the reply
