  • Journey Instruments - Classical Cedar Pau Ferro - OC520. Collapsable (removable neck) Travel Classical Guitar. More info, spec and my full review here: www.thisisclas...
    Full specs and buying here: www.journeyinst...
    Update - That's not a metal strip around the fingerboard on the body, it's a removable rubbery pad. Looks better now after taking it off!
    As you can tell in the video, I had quite a bit of fun looking at the Journey Instruments Classical Cedar Pau Ferro - OC520 collapsable travel classical guitar. When they first contacted me I was a bit skeptical of doing a review of a travel guitar but I was pleasantly surprised at how well designed and charming this instrument is to play. The detachable neck is rock solid, easy to setup, and the action and playability of the guitar was great right out of the box. The tone is warm, mellow, and has a plucky quality, kind of like a 19th century guitar. The travel bag is perfect, will fit in any overhead plane. It's a soft case but that might be good for planes and airport security size-wise. Plus, it has a built in under-bridge transducer pickup system. The only thing I didn't like was the little plastic string holder on the head but it's likely a necessary and practical addition to keep the strings in place. The price is amazingly affordable at around $649. It's not a concert level instrument but it is far more than just a travel guitar. Most travel guitars are actually just smaller instruments but this one is a full 650mm scale length so you can practice properly on the go. I usually sell my review instruments but I think I'll keep this one for travel and practice.

    This is unquestionably the best demo / review of the Journey guitars I have seen. It’s not a $30k Pimentel or Cordova or Collings or other super luthier grade but I wouldn’t take one of those to the beach. Thank you!

    Funny that I sold my acoustic guitar from Journey Instruments to buy this one since I'm learning Classical Guitar now and found this great review. All the Journey guitars sound awesome and are well thought instruments. They might not be concert or profesional grade instruments but for the price and what they are (a travel guitar that snaps in half) they're hard to beat, are easily portable and sound great.
    Thanks for showing us the sweet range of its sounds Maestro!!

    Yeah it’s a great idea, I’m looking for a travel guitar, it’s an awesome setup ,unfortunately I lost my interest when I heard the tone, that’s just my opinion though.
    I’m guessing it s expensive too.

    Thanks for the review. Traveling on planes with a guitar can be a nightmare so an instrument which is close to a full size one but goes in an overhead locker is a really good idea for keeping up with practice.

    Hello! Thanks for the great review. Have you played the Journey OC660? Do you have any input on which guitar you would recommend between the OC520 and OC660?

    Great review. Looks like the body is wider/deeper than usual. Maybe to compensate for small size? It looks like a great design and is priced right. I want one!

      Ya, it wide near the neck, maybe for sound and maybe to support the detachable neck.

    Really appreciate the review. Any chance we could get a part two with how it sounds amplified?

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  6 лет назад

      Good idea. It's so tricky to get an accurate sound when it goes through so many different electronics: The Guitar - The Amp - The Mic - My Processor - RUclips - Your computer and speakers.

    That looked so wrong when it came out of the box, but it actually works!

    Very interesting guitar! You should also try Yamaha SLG 200N. That's also travel friendly classical guitar but with a different concept. It doesn't have body at all, therefore it's only possible to play it plugged either in amp or via headphones. But, it has a really nice sound. And you can take it on plane with you :-)

    I keep my guitar in a hot car so I need to know.

    Is this better than the Córdoba C9 or C10 for the money?

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  4 года назад +1

      Nope! The C9 and C10 are way better. But they don't collapse so totally different purposes.

    This kind of instrument could be useful to take for a trip, I think. Especially if you travel by plane.

    I wonder what the intonation is like give it has a removable neck.

      Actually not bad, the connection is so solid that it stays aligned. But you pay for that in weight.

    So is this parlour size?

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  6 лет назад +1

      Well, it's mixed. It's a 650mm scale length which is standard for classical guitar. But the body is clearly smaller.

  • @plunderclat221
    @plunderclat221 6 лет назад

    Its the equivalent of around $700 in uk. I have to say, if I did travel, I'd pay that. I don't though, and how many people actually do? I hope they do well from this nonetheless

      I appreciate that your comment was two years ago, but I thought id pitch in haha Ive been searching for a giging guitar that I could travel with for years and I had no idea these things existed until yesterday. I take anything like 10-15 flights a year to gigs or tours and its honestly the biggest pain in the ass ever. Im just really praying these you tubers haven't just been paid off through the ass haha (ive bought the FC acoustic version)

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar  4 года назад

      Just like a normal guitar. Put the neck on first and then change though so the length will be correct.
