THIS MAN SIR NIPSEY RUSSELL WAS 60 YEARS OLD, WHEN HE SHOT THIS FILM........ 60 YEARS OLD....... DANCING LIKE THAT NOTHING MORE NEEDS TO BE SAID.......
OMG, the childhood memories with this one. 🥺❤️ The Wiz. Ah man. My late father brought this VHS back in the mid-80's. Told my little brothers and me that, "All black folks need to see this movie." Or something to that effect. LOL. My dad was hilarious. Anywho, this song, "Ease on Down the Road" and "You Can't Win." Classics. I still sing these from time to time as a 40-something. Oh, and "When I Think of Home" duet between Ms. Ross and Ms. Horne. Whew, song still gives me goose bumps. Y'all betta sing my soul to glory! Shaba! 🙌🏽
"Let me show you my Saturday night finish. Oh music man. Let me hear that band. Don't turn the water on me. Just let me burn and let me lubricate my mind!!!!!!!!!!"
My God they just don't make movies like this anymore. By themselves, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross were all accomplished actors/singers/broadway stars, but putting them together for The Wiz and they were simply Gods/Goddesses. A phenomenal, other worldly movie that will never be duplicated.
This will always make me feel the innocence of growing up in the 80's.....I'll never forget when my parents got this VHS tape and told me they had a surprise for me...They said all black kids should see it and boy were they right!!!
+Mr gamer Smith The movie was made in NY, and im a New Yorker. There's lots of NY landmarks in this movie. The cyclone (coaster) is just one of them. I've ridden it so many times I'd recognize it Anywhere. :-)
0:56 The little shot of MJ smiling is so tragic to me nowadays because I distinctly remember that particular clip being featured in the video montage of Michael’s career that was shown during his Staples Center memorial service
"Let me show you my Saturday night finish. Oh music man let me hear that band. Don't turn the water on me just let me burn and let me lubricate my mind!!!!!!!!!"
Diana Ross was so perfect in this. her face has such a unique and captivating beauty... meant for closeup shots. the expression of emotion in those BIG beautiful eyes. and Michael Jackson was so beautiful in this as well. due to my age (born in 73), so much of what i remember was from his later career as a complicated pop star. but in this role he is so pure in my mind... so lovely to watch. i think a big part of his very own, real personality accounted for why the scare crow character was so lovable and memorable in this production. unforgettable
Still my favorite Wizard of Oz interpretation, Quincey Jones is the Wiz!!!! The music is awesome and frankly parts of the movie scared the crap out of me as a kid.
I’m 12 and a lot of people say this movie is overrated but really it’s underrated it means a lot to me especially since I have the same thoughts about myself see,Dorothys personalities and insecurities are Scarecrow, tinman, and lion, she thinks she’s dumb and isn’t smart enough but is actually really intelligent, she thinks she doesn’t have a heart and that she doesn’t have feelings to love but she loves the hardest, she thinks shes a coward but really is the Most bravest out there, things that she has to realize in the end that she was smart,Loved, and brave
Nipsy Russell crushed this role like it was a tin can. (Ok, now I've got to watch the whole movie.) The whole scene was amazing, in awe the way Diana and Michael leaped on the stage and started dancing.
+Christopher Harte I had never heard of Neyo before last night. The tin man is not supposed to steal the show in this musical, but Neyo damn sure did. That was a phenomenal performance.
@@jeffrobertson5864 It all depends; I've been to shows where someone other than the main performer just blew everyone out of the water, no matter who he or she was playing. When I saw the 10th anniversary production of "The Wiz" on stage, the only performer who got as much applause and cheers as returning Dorothy Stephanie Mills was the guy who played the Lion.
This movie is why I've never seen the original Wizard of Oz. I just knew at age 8 when I first saw it, I never needed to see the original. Ever since I saw this movie back in the day it's always been one of my favorites!
These classics do what modern films can't: film on earth, without it feeling like its on earth. Like it's some other mirror dimension in a eerie, maybe even terrifying way. Like a poor simulation. This does not look like it was shot on earth, but in some sort of dream. It's super, super creepy and makes my hairs stand on end. I miss this about the classics like Dark Crystal, The Labyrinth, Moon Walker, Return To Oz, etc.
If you watch this movie you can see how Michael always added extra dance steps in for himself. Lol. Even when everyone is supposed to be doing the same dance. lol.
when people haven't seen the original Broadway play but only the movies they have nothing to compare the wiz live to other then the movies. keep that in mind folks, personally I don't think it matters though...if MJ, Diana ross, nipsey and the rest of the cast of the movie actually did it on stage rather then in a movie they still would did better then the wiz live, an actor is an actor no matter what platform they perform in. I feel the cast of the wiz live tried to live up to standards they couldn't possibly achieve, they didn't put there own heart into it. like the reviews have stayed the best of the show was the guy who played the lion and the wicked witch.
The only standards a cast has to "live up to" are the ones the director sets for them, and this director got a top-notch cast to deliver a top-notch production. And Stephanie Mills, the original Broadway Dorothy-- you know, the one who won raves for her work before Diana ever played the character-- had nothing but praise for Shanice Williams, who knocked it out of the park with her Dorothy.
Angeles Lennon-Dameron Funny thing: in L. Frank Baum's original book (and in the stage version of "The Wiz"), the Tin Woodman started out as a flesh-and-bone human being who, through a bizarre sequence of events, was replaced bit by bit with tin until he was all tin. In the movie, he was the robotic creation of a mechanical genius and therefore was never human. In fact, this Tinman really has more in common with Tik-Tok the Clockwork Man of the later Oz books.

Y do y’all think 60 is old? There are tons of people at that age who take care of themselves
wait this is nipsey hussle?
"If you don't have S.T.P, Crisco would do just fine!" That line killed me as a kid and it's still hilarious. 😂
When I was little, I used to think he was saying "If you don't have std"
The_HipHop _PopTart I still don’t get it
Same!!!!! 😂😂😂😂
You ain't lying 😂😂
KHAREE THEBEAST is to m
I’m still spellbound to this underrated masterpiece.
R.I.P. Nipsey Russell (1918-2005) (The Tin Man) and Michael Jackson (1958-2009) (The Scarecrow).
Lene Horne ( 1917-2020) the witch of the North
That date hasn't even happened yet.
I noticed. My mistake. She died in 05 I think
Good. The only non support still alive is Ross.
+TheNotverysocial what about the lion?
Of all the great numbers in this musical, this is the one that pops in my head every so often and I have to listen to it.
Would you believe that Nipsey Russell was sixty years old when he did this? :-)
+MaskedMan66 I'm guessing it's a case of "I'm old but I'm not dead!" Or "there's life in the old man yet!"
agenttheater5 Life and plenty of it! He made it to the age of 87.
He got older, but he never got old. ;)
never knew that so sixty is the new twenty.
Tarik Brown Basically. :-) And as this was 1978, that means seventy-five must be the new twenty by now.
OMG, the childhood memories with this one. 🥺❤️ The Wiz. Ah man. My late father brought this VHS back in the mid-80's. Told my little brothers and me that, "All black folks need to see this movie." Or something to that effect. LOL. My dad was hilarious.

The film industry put real effort into costumes back then.
The costumes in this film are ugly and tacky

The coolest tin man ever 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Tyasia Diggs the one and only tinman will always be jack Haley, he brought that character to life, nobody could top him
Tyasia Diggs He’s no Ben Vereen, but he’s a good dancer 🕺🏼
