    I'm from KL, Penang now has 2mil people and assuming just 2% growth per year, the number of residents would hit 2.5mil people. I'm pretty sure it's time for Penang to have LRT. Moreover, building a LRT/MRT takes a lot of time and money, hence, you need to plan 10 - 20 years ahead. So, I believe it should be done asap.

    I'm from Singapore, and am glad that Penang is getting an LRT system. But just building an LRT is not going to be enough incentive for drivers to give up driving - unfortunately, perhaps Penang will have to implement a system of road pricing too, perhaps not all over the island, but where it really gets congested.

    Penang has the size and population density to support a rail system. Hopefully it will be build soon and more lines will be added.
    But it is important that the city is walkable in a save and convenient way. And a bus system needs to support the rail transit. Busses and walkability can be improved before a rail system is built.
    A good and frequent bus service could pick up passengers on the mainland and bring them to their destination on the island. Which would prevent many cars to enter the island.
    Passenger ferry service needs to be improved as well as it will be crucial to connect to intercity trains.

    Even though I have stated clearly about how important it is to install LRT system in Penang, yet there are still some ignorant people came up with ideas that Penangites should just use bicycle. I will state the points as below to support my view :-
    1. Malaysia is located at Tropical zone, which means always hot and humid with lots of rain falls unlike Europe countries which are dry and cooling. Imagine cycling under sun or rain to work everyday, it is totally unbearable.
    2. Penang life is not evolved in George Town area only, there are Teluk Bahang, Teluk Kumbar and Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru as well. Cycling for that distances is not reasonable.
    3. Penang is aiming to develop the Tourism and Commercial sectors. Bicycle does not fit the above development purpose for mass transportation.

  • @NOSTEIK
    @NOSTEIK Год назад +5

    the density and mixed used way of city planning of the island are the key for this line to become more easy to success compare to KL. Because KL is literally using isolated highway to cut through the city and turn it into many pieces. Walking to the stations are almost impossible(for most of the stations), this is not the case in Penang. Further the population is almost the same as KL in 90s when KL got their first LRT. And according to the news, the gov never forget the other lines, just that they will build it one by one, in fact this PTMP is much better than KL, because PTMP already planned all the 7 transit corridors and make it integrated with each other, planned as a whole, but KL didn’t do it in the 90s. KL don’t really have a plan like this in the past, more like build one line first then only plan the next, this is why many lines are facing integrated issue.

    As a Penangite, we definitely need this. I would sometimes need 35 minutes to travel 3kms on peak hours on certain areas. Why question if people would use it ? Look, busses aren't that great, as these busses also stuck at the same traffic. So people use their own cars for their own convenience and because there are literally no other options. What other solutions ? Wait for freaking flying cars to exist ?
    Maybe bicycle lanes like in the Netherlands ? But I can't cycle from Bayan Lepas to Batu Ferringhi, on a hot afternoon or rainy days, it's ridiculous. Get the LRTs/MRTs done, provide those rent a electric bicycle/scooters services everywhere, have proper bicycle/pedestrian lanes, and watch cars disappear. We could learn a thing or two from cities in China. They have driverless busses now... big and small. No jams, means these busses move around more efficiently and more freely, hence more people would use the busses even more, and we could have even more busses.
    If I don't have to drive, I won't drive. I'm not gonna need a car if I don't have to drive.

  • @shirleylim664
    @shirleylim664 Год назад +4

    Penang had a tram system but was dismantled for diesel buses. Population of penang cannot be just 350k people. I think it is double that on a working day.
    If they build the lrt, please ensure that it is not built alongside highways like in KL. Build it so that traffic snd buses are diverted away from highways. In KL, buses that takes commuters to mrt stations are stuck at highway junctions during morning peak hours.
    Plus during construction, no current roads and lanes are shut for construction. Major cause of jams are due to road and lane closures during construction in KL. Sometimes this are closed for many years causing business failures in vicinity and massive sufferings due to jams.

    LRT is a statement, a symbol of the power of DAP for now and the future. I am not a UMNO supporter; as a matter of fact, I am a DAP supporter. How on earth can LRT resolve traffic issues in Penang! Penang consists of Seberang Perai, which its traffic issues are not lesser than Penang. Presumably, LRT can resolve the traffic issues in the vicinity of those lines. What percentage can it contribute? 5%-10%! Don't forget while spending so much money, the people of Seberang Perai still suffer.

  • @secrets.295

    Georgetown populations of alone wouldn't be enough to justify operating the LRT but if the LRT services are extended to Greater Penang (Seberang Perai, Kulim, etc). This project would be justifiable. The Greater Penang area has 3 million populations. Should be more than enough to justify building an LRT. Do we have to wait until the population reach 5 millions or 10 millions before we start building one. This is the problem with Malaysia. Always short term planning, never think about the future and these people in Penang that makes such a big fuss about this project is a shining example of the shallow minded Malaysian people.
