- Michael has been telling me about this route forever, and I've finally gotten my lazy ass out of Sydney and to the Blue Mountains for some gravel riding! The views and nature out there are stunning and once you get off the beaten track the trails are incredible. If you're looking for a gravel adventure I highly recommend coming out to the Blue Mountains.
It's never smooth sailing with gravel riding, and this time we had a little bit of a bingle. Watch the video for some important tips on how to stay safe while riding in secluded areas.

Thanks for the well wishes, hope to be back on a bike soon!
Just become the zwift king
interesting! thanks for making a video on this trail
Just came across your channel. With my mountain biking background I cringed when I saw you head for Anderson's. I've ridden everything in my cross bike, all except Anderson's. The drop to Bedford Creek is brutal. Have you considered up and down The Oaks instead. This is our favourite Blue Mountains ride for cross bikes.
I feel sorry for Chris as he had a couple of falls on his gravel bike since I’ve been watching your videos. He has more guts than me so good on him and wish him a speedy recovery.
Riding offroad doesn’t always come naturally, I hope after he recovers he gives it another shot 😛
Great vid - thanks for sharing
Heads up Josh if you ever go on a Intercity train again - there are cars that have bit more room set aside specifically for bikes - there is normally a little blue bike sticker next to the door to identify which is which - still pretty tight but definitely a lot more room than you encountered :)
Thanks for that! I’ll defs keep an eye out for the sticker.
You will have to go back and finish the Woodford to Glenbrook section, some great downhills! Although I guess you may have already. Back in the 80s, I rode that section from Woodford Store to the Glenbrook rangers station in 1h 6m on a MTB.
Best wishes to Chris for a speedy and full recovery. Like other commenters I've done that ride a few times (very long ago for me) but always on a full sus MTB. I would NOT do well these days on a gravel bike so goodonya for having a go.
Someone mentioned the Oaks trail is a bit more tame. I’ll have to get to the second half another day
Always carry a snake bite bandage now it's getting warmer and know how to apply it. I've seen a few snakes out already and that bandage could save your life while you're waiting for emergency services
100%
For those who are reading this, a snakebite bandage has extra compression to squeeze your blood and lymphatic system and slow the spread of the poison. Thanks for the tip mate!
Sending Chris my energy 🙌
Thank you dr 🫶🫶
Tip number 4, bring a doctor to your rides.
Better come next time
Bummer about your friends injury, hope he is up and riding soon. Also hope you get back out there soon and have a more successful adventure. It looks awesome
Thanks Greg!
2:17: you needed to go into the other end of the carriage where the vestibule is larger and you can hang up your bike on the meat hooks. I catch those trains on my commute from Penrith to Strathfield and ride from Strathfield to the city.
Thanks for the tip mate
I love this route. Nice lookout at McMahon point before turning to Anderson too. Did few times on my full sus; def sketchy on gravel tho. Glad your friend was safe 👌
Yea I defs need to come back to do this route a few more times. Looked like there were plenty of other trails in the area
Cracker intro & great story telling on the ride! Sucks about Chris glad he’s not too discouraged with all the crashing. Wow that psi, I’m going to try lowering my psi in the 20’s next ride.
I’ve been running mid 30’s on my maxxis ramblers as I feel it’s perfect for not getting too many rim strikes on rocky descents:)
Thanks matey, I also should have said I run foam inners so I can get away with lower pressures. Gotta protect that rim 🤣
I have done this many time on my hardtail Mtb, would be tough on a gravel bike at speed. Hope Chris gets better soon !
Some of the rocky downhill sections would be more suitable for MTB, but it isn’t too bad if you take it slow on the grav
Just read about this route not long ago from the Lonely Island Epic Bike Rides of AUS and NZ!!
Looks so fun!
And wishing Chris a speedy recovery
It is good fun, apparently the Oaks Fire trail section is a bit more tame, we’ll have to go back and do it
It's solid fun. If you guys ever do the Oaks, i'm happy to chaperone. I'm local. There's some good off tracks to ride and a cool single track (first half is pretty good for the gravel bikes)@@joshkwan
Cheers dude. Keen beans
Damn, looks like you all handled a rough situation pretty well!
To add one more tip: If you're out in the bush, bring a personal locator beacon. Hopefully you never have to use it but sometimes the help has to come to you. National parks NSW lets you rent them for free. Otherwise, buying one is a lot cheaper than what most of us spend on bikes😄
That’s a great tip, defs a good idea if you’re doing multiple days in the wilderness or taking the path less travelled
@@joshkwan mhmm, a few hours or multi day it's all the same once you're out of phone signal
Yeah Anderson’s is not for gravel bikes, unless you’ve got mad skills
Yes sir
I did this trail when I worked with Societe generale! It was called the Asia Pacific bike ride Challenge 2016 - we did it on mountain bikes!
136 riders started and 85 finished lol
Josh kwan, when are we collaborating with thewinsty from Singapore hahaha?
Haha if he’s planning to come to Sydney we’ll have to do a ride together
@@joshkwan the closest he got to sydney was when his Mrs had a conference in Perth, and he cycled the entire perth cycle network (think M7 but better).
I found your channel through his. literally searched up "Aussie version thewinsty"
Nice… best wishes to Chris
Thank you mate, he reads the comments and I’m sure he appreciates it
Dual Suspension MTB time. They stay on the track so much better. Ignore the scar on my arm😂
Maybe we need to compromise and get a hard trail haha
Bummer result….What’s the scoop re knowing which carriages to get on with the trains mate? I am thinking of a bike packing trip from Gordon to Bathurst and back
Hey mate! Just had a quick look on TripView. Majority of trains are fine all carriages, the occasional one says “travel in the back 7 carriages”
Hope that helps
Hello - Gravel Cyclist here, and will be moving to Sydney really soon. Do you have a strava link for this route? Love the scenic view in Blue Mountains! 😍

@@joshkwan Golden, thanks man!
I was wondering why Chris' face was censored... then I saw the red. Ouch! Hope he fully recovers soon!
That lady at 2:42 didn't look too impressed haha.
Nice drone shots, I was hoping for some follow shots!
p.s. I enjoy your videos and I love watching them. 😘
p.s.2 Nice Adobe logo on the thumbnail. When is the sponsorship coming?
I felt quite bad once he was fully treated at the hospital. He had a fractured wrist and cheekbone.
Yea we had planned to do some more drone shots but the day ran away with us, we’ll defs do some proper following shots next time.
Thanks mate, people like you are the lifeblood of the channel!!
The Adobe watermark is there because they recently changed their model to subscription and I CBF paying for it!!
@@joshkwan If you made the thumbnail larger you could crop it out haha.
Damn, good on him for still being able to ride out with those injuries! Good thing it was a group ride. I usually go by myself, I'd better make sure I'm always prepared.
I'd be shite at gravel riding, I'd constantly be in hospital.
I’m sure you’d be fine! Just takes a bit of getting used to
You got in the wrong carriage. 😊
I don’t understand gravel riders 😂 why not use a cross country mtb? The struggle you guys put yourself to not ride a mtb is funny. I don’t doubt a gravel bike can get the job done but with at least a cross country mtb it is more adapted for the terrain and more safe. We all want to explore new trails but doing it on gravel seems like tying one hand behind your back.
Agree with you mate. Gravel bikes are more suited for dirt roads and the like. Another advantage is you can easily ride on the road to reach the trails. That being said anything lumpier than a cobble driveway and you’re in a bit of trouble haha
100% agree, all you need is a good road bike and a good MTB and you're covered for most of your riding...a lot of people underestimate just how gnarly some of those off road and fire trails get.
having ridden the Oaks on a gravel bike and MTB, I would also suggest to stick to the MTB here. The descents are the best bits and they are hard to enjoy on the gravel bike
