Thank you for reminding me that I am not who I was but who I am. All that matters is what I am doing now, not what I think I might do in the future. I am defined by the moment that I am part of and the decisions I am making, even as I am typing this. My only limitation is myself, the bounds I place on me, and the fear I have imagining more that what I have already experienced. Great video, great message..the past is a record, not a map...

Alan Watts was a genius. We all have this potential in us to unlock life's secrets, yet we ignore it. We are too preoccupied with finding content in material things but we never look within ourselves.

The music overpowers his voice..the key element here should be his lecture. Music should be subtle.

That tells you how much Allen Watts is loved. We give 96% likes vs 4% dislikes for a video that we can barely make out what he’s saying. We probably should dislike these videos though. It’s like going to a restaurant and tipping even though the service is really bad. They won’t know most of us dislike music with his videos if we keep giving them likes (yes this is a copy and paste 🙂)

Time flows backwards. If I say, "I love you" you don't know who or what I love until the last word. The end determines the beginning. All of which happens only now, in the present. Today isn't the first day of the rest of your life. Today is the only day of the rest of your life!

Charles Miller : that's why language is unable to express and transmit love. You get hung up by the words and thereby conclude that they have a true relation towards reality. This isn't so. Words are only symbols for purposes of communication. They do not represent reality at all. They are scribbled caricatures of reality. *Your conclusion is only valid in the realm of symbols* omPEACEom

Memory is apart of everything and important! I appreciate memories, for without it how would I know the truth that's happened. It's like hating on history classes but in my own life... my father and cousin that's past away, I do not wish for them not to be there anymore. I hold onto such memories to help inspire the good that's left in this world because they were amazing people. Memory links to more wisdom whether it be good or bad, but the memory of our character shaping doesn't have to define how we approach things the way we've been doing but it can show us what we can choose to do or not do from the results. I appreciate how future oriented this video is but I can't help but think the past present and future all matter. Every bit of it.

The way you've build up to Alan Watts' voice, the time lapses - especially the time lapses - and then the letters on screen so we can read it along, especially that last one I think is very amazing; setting in more senses (not only hearing but seeing alike) gives even more opportunities to get the message across. Quite on the contrary. There is no now because any finite entity is infinitely divisible. So when he tells us to only judge ourselves by what we are "now" and not by our memory, what and how many intervals of times is he talking about? Instead, it is our memory that is an important part of who we are. It is also THE condition for the possibility of knowing anything at all since knowledge implies the sustained awareness of stable entities which is only possible for spatio-temporal creatures in and through memory. But most importantly, our memory is God's way of pointing us away from darkness and towards the eternal light that is Himself. Every single memory you have is jam packed with the voice of God. The grain of truth in this video however is that we don't have to be DETERMINED by our negative memories. But the fact that we continue to be determined by them is God's way of telling us about ourselves and what we must change in order to fully realize communion with Himself and be finally and truly liberated from our oppressive memories. In other words, these memories are God's way of pointing us toward the cosmic sweetness of repentance, purification and divinization. There is no surer and truer path to this than Orthodox Christianity.

The problem of only defining oneself by the now and potential action is that demotes and somewhat disregards the impact of pain. We dwell in a current now, but there are events that so so affect the psyche that those events will last for the lifetime of the psyche. Events that become points of pain that can never be forgotten, forgiven, overcome, or resolved.
It would be a tremendous thing if humanity could just simply refocus on the present and future potentials deriving life giving force from that mindset alone, but that idea is not the way the mind works. In our misconstructions of our character as we define self through time many experience events so bad and horrendous that all future action is a haze compared to the emotional and psychic traumas that the individual may well endure.
Watts argues that one should through force of will simply step past those events. He argues that resolution of the past is just a logical recognition of something that should be stepped over and left behind.
Human Trauma does not work that way. Watts is an idealist and is inflated by his so called revelation and is exposed by that.

is a very curious phrase: "past and future only exist in the present". But, only exist in YOUR present. 'cause if you die today your past will die with you and your future too. But if you have a photography, your past will remain, at least the image ,literaly, of that past. So when you die, your past will not die, 'cause you touch people in too many different ways, you will change people in too many ways. So your past will remain in each of those person that you moved, you touched. So, my past will die where my actions could not reach.
That's because Newton don't die, 'cause his idea continue in each of us.
