Good lord the jack knifed trailer gonna cave in the side of that high dollar pickup. Glad you got it out mostly unscathed. Might be time to invest in some of those traction board things! And some straps to give your winch more reach to sturdier trees
Surprisingly it only put a small dent in the side of the rear bumper and minor rash on the fender flare. No damage to the body or rear taillight. I can live with that. 😂 No traction boards yet, but I was fully prepared to use the winch had it not gotten out after unhooking the trailer.
No 😂. The tree directly in front of me was too close to really be of any advantage. And the others were further away and at odd angles. Had I been a little more desperate I might have tried some of those but I was able to get myself out before getting to that point. I had gotten stuck a few years ago in a similar predicament and I did use the winch that time but the weight of both the trailer and the truck was a bit much for the winch to handle and it’s safety cutoff kicked in several times.
Well done video. That E Texas mud can be wicked! Guess you’re rethinking that trailer for E Texas overloading. Being in the woods alone can be a refreshing experience.
Thank you!🙏 There’s definitely pros and cons taking a trailer off-road. It definitely was refreshing! There’s something about the forest that just soothes the soul!
I’m liking it more and more with each visit! Congrats on the land! I definitely want to head out there again and possibly make it to Sabine NF. I feel like these areas are highly underrated.
FYI that gate you came to north of on Alaska, isn’t actually locked, but the route through there is a bit untraveled. We ride this area very often on adventure bikes.
That East Texas mud can get ya. Only place I’ve ever had my XJ legitimately stuck was Sam Houston NF. Thankfully I was able to winch out off of three different trees or I would’ve really been in trouble. I think Davy Crockett NF is on my agenda for this spring
Glad you were able to get out! Three different trees? Wow. And it just comes out of nowhere. The ground looks fine on the surface but what lies underneath is super slick and thick! I think this might be my new favorite region to explore in Texas! 😂 Althought your Merus video really makes me want to head that way. That’s one area of Texas that I have yet to camp in.
I was cheering you on the whole time my man. May I suggest two shovels and you'll never buy another one. 1st one is the Council USFS Combination Pick/Shovel Combi-Tool From Forestry Suppliers 2nd is a all stainless aluminum square head from Truper the combo pic and shovel are absolutley great for all things but beach sand the square is great for beach sand
Thanks for yet ANOTHER video proving to me why I won't EVER drag a trailer off-road. Ugggh! Clearly what really hurt you the most in getting stuck and not being able to quickly get unstuck was the trailer. Once you disconnected the trailer, things went a lot better. Makes you think.
I agree. I have thought about selling it and using that money for a bed rack and other gear to basically have what’s on the trailer on the bed instead. But there’s also just something I like about that trailer and how it just takes whatever I can dish it. It’s also good if setting up a base camp. I do remember thinking it would have been much easier getting unstuck without it. And might not even gotten stuck in the first place.
@MotoringAdventures_KE7SAI I agree it's a really tough and rugged trailer. As far as off road capable trailers go, it's got to be very high on the list. But that can't compensate much for the physics of what's going on. Plus it's still another point of failure. A bearing could seize, for example. Plus having it will limit the places you can go vs not having it. And if your truck has a major failure or accident, especially a long way from home, you have to not only deal with the truck, but figure out what to do with the trailer. IMO the liabilities of bringing a trailer, **especially for a solo traveler**, don't even come close to being worth it.
@@VideosOffRoad Very good points! I had thought about the liability thing after seeing that happen to another RUclipsr’s trailer and in a very remote area.
Man, I thought your trailer jackknifed into your truck a couple times! And you had more guts than me by going back in to re-hook the trailer. I was thinking you were gonna hook the winch to it and pull it backwards. Looked like a fun adventure though! Thanks for the video.
You know, it didn’t even cross my mind to use the winch to pull the trailer back. 😆 The trailer did put a minor dent into the rear bumper on the passenger side. It was very minor though. As stressful as that situation was, it was a fun trip! Thanks for watching! 👍
Yep. Had I not gotten it out on it's own power, I was fully prepared to use the winch. It just didn't need it. There was a tree 6 feet in front of the truck, but pulling it forward with the trailer still attached, would have just put the trailer in the mud and the rear tires would still have been in as well. I explained this in the video.
It does bounce some over bridges and bumps on the interstate. But where it bounces the most is on graded dirt roads with bumps or ruts because you take them at a higher speed than slower speed, two tracks or "rock crawling" type of trails where you're going much slower. Keeping tire pressure at around 17-20 psi helps.
Haha! That’s exactly what it sounded like! Glad you enjoyed it! 👍 Thank you for the camping suggestions. I’m going to have head that way next time. Cheers!🍻
That’s a good way to dig yourself in. You want to turn the wheels back and forth in order for them to bite. Once they did bite, I did hold that line until I was out.
@@MotoringAdventures_KE7SAI I was surprised how well the pul pal worked with my 8000 pound ram diesel. It takes some work to set it but once it digs in its strong.
@ Yeah, I’ve not seen it working in person but watched several videos about them and how they work. Great if you’re in an area with no trees or anything to anchor too. My problem here was having that tree 6 feet directly in front of me. It would have been of no real advantage to winch just a few feet forward because now the tree would be blocking me and the trailer would have been further into the mud. I could have possibly winched to one of the further away trees off to the side but I was pretty confident I could get out if I just disconnected the trailer.
Best outings are the ones you can say didn’t go as planned, including getting stuck or hearing and seeing weird stuff. Spooky though. I got pretty much same set up and you could use winch and rear trailer hook to pull it and maybe straighten it to rehook. Always harder to see what to do when in the midst of things . Enjoyed video
Agree 💯! It would have been a pretty uneventful day without it. And I feel so dumb for not thinking of winching it back. 😂 But you’re right, when you’re in the middle of it you kind of have tunnel vision. I was hyper focused on getting out of there that I didn’t see all options. I’m just glad I made it out unscathed except for a small dent in the rear bumper from jack-knifing the trailer. 😂 Memories
The tires would start to clear out with the centrifugal forces but they are getting lower in tread depth making it easier to cake up, at least you were able to get it out, unlike the WJ at Lake Mead long time ago lol
Yeah the tires are showing their age. The ground clearance really helped. It never got buried. That’s what got the WJ stuck that time. It was also on a slope.
I was holding off on using it until I absolutely couldn’t get myself out because I was probably going to have to unhook the trailer anyways and once that was unhooked the truck got out fairly easily once I got the tires to bite.
Thanks for some more PW content, Preston! Is that Bulletpoint mounting equipment you have holding up your screens? Also, what are you using to hold your GMRS mic?
Thanks! Yeah the bulletpoint stuff is holding them. The iPad vibrates quite a bit but is manageable. I was going to get a different base mount but for now it’s been fine. For the mic, I have a Gear Keeper that I have temporarily just sitting inside the sunglasses holder until I can find a more permanent solution.
No offense but every time the truck started to move or get traction you were letting off the gas pedal.. 4hi and mat it, you weren’t on the axles so gotta get them bfg m/ts cleaned out and it’s gonna go where you want it to just gotta get the tires cleaned out
None taken. I like hearing everyone's opinions on this and I appreciate yours! Yeah, that was my only concert was burying it, and also, pulling the trailer further into the mud (that's why I didn't winch to the tree right in front). It's a delicate balance. I was also trying to act quickly as the sun was setting. I could have possibly been out sooner had I stayed on it those other times. Finding the bite and staying on it is what eventually got me out both times (w/trailer and w/o). It's just hard to see how far I am sinking from the driver's seat. And I knew rocking it helps prevent that. The trailer was the real achilies heel as it restricted my movement. Oh well. It was still a fun trip and it's good to know what the limits of your vehicle is. And I'm just glad I was able to get out and get to camp! Lol!
😂 The differentials only lock when in low and having power on all four wheels is part of what got me out. Having it in high is what you want when you’re already moving and need to keep momentum up but I was already stopped.
