      I bet having a lot of large torrent files both reading and writing to the SSD simultaneously, the RAM would be unable to service all that churning, so the memory cells would get a lot of R/W cycles churning them. That would reduce the SSD lifespan below that of a hard drive.

  • @teamcannonfodder3410
    @teamcannonfodder3410 11 месяцев назад +6

    Lots of missing factors here, hard drives come in much higher capacities, ssds have limited write amounts, my hard drives actually tend to last longer than some of my SSDs and I'm going for decent brands not cheap ones. Hard drives are a lot slower but depending on what your using it for may not be a factor for example storing film or audio it will be find or storing older games, load time is the only thing it massively changes

    • @DeathStriker88
      @DeathStriker88 11 месяцев назад +3

  • @singletona082
    @singletona082 11 месяцев назад +7

    Can confirm. The move from spinny drive to SSD is honestly night and day. Your system will feel snappier not because of more memory but because of the severely shortened seek times for data.
    Then there is the sound. you don't realize how much noise a spinny drive makes until you swap out. I had always thought the noise was my fans. NOPE. that wrrr was the platter.
    Get an SSD. Even for an older computer like mine it is a massive improvement.

    When I built my system last year I went for a 120GB SATA SSD Boot drive and 4TB SSHD for game storage. Since added a 1TB NVMe for modern AAA titles.
    By the time I build the next rig a single 4TB min. NVMe will be practical cost:performance. 2TB NVMe’s are pretty much there already now, unlike a year ago.

    Harddrives are still much cheaper per GB than about any SSD. Also the deterioration is the same for SSDs. SSDs are mostly limited by the number of writes so if you need lots of data storage and you write a lot to it then HDDs might be the way to go. For any regular PC though its SSDs all the way.

    For your audience you're right. SSD is good for a boot drive and working game drive. Many gamers could get by with 1TB or less. On 1TB or less, The difference is a few bucks and not huge. You want games and windows to load fast.
    But if you're backing up files, or big media libraries, loads of films etc. and super high speed is not an issue, HDD is often better. HDDs have higher capacities. SSD storage at least in the UK is at least 3x the price of HDD. You are not going to get a 12TB SSD drive for £160 on sale like I did on a HDD the other week. Comparable pricing of 3 x 4TB SSDs, would put you at £600+, plus you'd need all those extra connectors.
    Also HDDs can and do often last longer than SSDs as the cells in SSDs can burn out after an amount of wear and tear. What I'd say is have an SSD as a working drive. And anything you want to store or not use immediately, have an external HDD (or internal one) for retrieving things to and fro.

But my WD Caviar Blue HDD which is very old, even belongs to before 2012 still works great and haven't given a single error yet. Even if you count from 2012 then it's been 11 years and nothing has happened to my HDD while SSD died in few years.
    All SSDs are made up of plastic PCB and plastic can be shattered into powder with just a simple twist. Meanwhile all HDD are made up of metal and you can only bend or dent a metal, you can't shatter them.
    Installing a game or software won't demand 750MB/s, it will demand 750MB of storage volume.
    Extreme overheating is the worst part of any SSD. HDD will become warm or just hot. But NVMe SSD will still run in 70°-80° even after installing the best heatsink.
    2TB HDD is still cheaper than 2TB SSD.
    Data recovery is 100% possible in a HDD and you can recover data even from a HDD that got turned into smithereens. While data recovery isn't an option in SSD. Even if it is, there is only less than 20% chance.

      I used to have a system running a 1tb sata SSD for my OS, and a hard drive as a games drive back in 2018. I remember when I got new world the load times were horrible. Then I bought a 1tb nvme SSD and then used my 1tb sata SSD as a games drive. Was so much better. Now SSDs are cheaper than hard drives. Hard drives are only worth buying in larger sizes for servers or for a NAS.
