Viserys chose to marry the girl who has been comforting him in his time of grief for 6 months. She was actively courting him at the request of her father. He grew to like her. He was talking to her more than his own daughter and he let his guard down around her more than he has ever done with Otto. Then Otto was like ‘as a husband who also lost his wife, I could never replace my wife for duties sake.’ Subtly putting the idea in the kings head that he should marry for love not duty (duty being marrying Lady Laena) knowing darn well Alicent has been charming the king for months. Then Alicent is all like ‘A good and KIND queen would be best for the realm’ ‘I’m sure lady Laena would be a KIND queen’ then she does something nice for the king by repairing his toy. He goes “that was very KIND of you, Alicent” The Hightowers are subtle with their manipulation but effective.
There is that scene where he placed his hand in the maggots. You could interpret that as a rotten right hand. This show is awesome with the hidden details and foreshadowing.
I came here to say exactly this. Otto knew exactly what he was saying when he said he didn't envy him having to replace his wife for duty sake. His word choice was no mistake. Every thing he says and does is calculated
Here we can see that Daemon actually loves his brother, he stole the egg as a tantrum so his brother come to see him and when Corlys bad mouth the brother, he says he is the only one who can say that to his bro. Love Matt Smith since Doctor Who (he is my doctor) and I'm happy he can highlight his acting more
Yeah, it's a good scene and good writing. In their own ways, neither of them really want to fight Viserys, they are frustrated and lost face, and feel their own 'areas' are under threat because with a passive king, so many elements are pushing against the edges and testing what they can get away with. It makes sense that first they would go after the Stepstones incursions, for Daemon to show his value to the realm, and for Corlys to secure his territory. Also, I am hyped to see them roll up and wreck shop.
I love Daemon's petty ass. George RR Martin has said Daemon is his favorite Targaryen because he's made of equal parts light and dark. When you stop and think about it, he just wants his brother's approval. He doesn't even want to be king. He just wants to feel valued and respected. I know where this goes, so I won't spoil anything. But you'll see why Daemon's my favorite. Corlys is a close second. My man has literally sailed everywhere on the map and came back richer than the king and the Lannisters!
Caraxes and Syrax were chirping at each other as soon as Rhaenyra did the flyby, that’s how you can subtlety tell that Daemon and Rhaenyra have no wish to harm each other. Both the dragons growled at the other people there, but not each other. I think Caraxes even gives a dragon smile as he watches them come in 🤷🏼
And to think she came as back up is surprising. Caraxes most likely can dispatch syrax pretty quick. In the books and this you can tell there's a difference in battles experience
Corlys made the right call going to Daemon... Notice that they are not talking about joining forces against the king, staging a coup or anything like that... Corlys wants someone who will give him support and authority to go and deal with the Crabfeeder; and Daemon can do that because on the one hand he is a prince who is actually loved and respected by a lot of people thru out the realm, but also feared; he is in the outs with the king, so he can operate independently with little risk of getting in trouble because of his status and he is an experienced commander with a very large dragon... Rhaenyra is still under the kings thumb or authority and she isn't a commander or a fighter and her dragon is really a show pony that has been used for joy rides; she isn't going to sanction an all out assault without going to her father first. Both Daemon and Corlys are thinking about the standing of their houses; Daemon thinks that the king and therefor the Targaryens look weak by allowing these people to reek havoc in the Stepstones (which are not part of the territory and jurisdiction of the 7 kingdoms)... And Corlys knows the ships and men he is loosing (because the Stepstones is a main trade pass between one continent to the other) are going to eventually hurt his family and his home, that's his living, sea trade What Corlys is looking for is: 1) clear out those shipping lanes and get that situation stable by killing this group; and 2) get in early on the good side of Daemon because he considers him a stronger leader than the king, and this isn't new, the first episode we saw how Corlys was really the only member of the counsel apart from the king that supported Daemon And what Daemon wants; apart from clearing out this mess that is clearly hurting the realm and his family as effective rulers... Is to solidify himself as an assertive and worthy candidate for the throne, the gain the support and respect of the people in the realm once he solves this problem for everybody... he kills everyone there, the seas go back to business and he comes back a hero and an even more proven warrior and commander; something that a lot of people in the realm consider important to be a king, being a strong military leader.
I disliked Daemon in ep 1 mostly because of "the king for a day" but I realized that the tone of the delivery of your statement is very important, we know he said the phrase, what we don't know is how he said it because Otto made that decision for us, Daemon is impulsive but he values his family, he could really just honoring Prince Baelon he wasn't partying or anything he was just drinking by himself. I came to love his character in episode 2 and i'm rooting for him, he's right Viserys is a weak king.
Lord Corlys is 1000% correct! Dragons are like Nuclear Missiles! You don't have to use them! As a sign of force you just need to let the other guy know that if you have to you will! The King is done! He is unfit to sit in that Throne and the Throne knows this!!! Daemon is also unfit to sit on the Throne! Daemon is a hot head, violent, only knows how to use force! Lacks compassion and empathy! The people would not support due to love they would stand by him because of fear! That is never a good quality in a King! Look up "Ramsey Bolton or Joffrey Baratheon"!The Princess will have to turn on her ex friend because Hightower is also pulling his daughter's strings!
You underestimate Otto. By the king's own words, he trusts Otto. Otto sent his daughter to "comfort" the king. Back then you didn't send your daughter to comfort a man unless you expect specific end results. Now the king finds comfort in his talks with Allicent, Otto's daughter, the man he trusts, Allicent who is already of age. Otto doesn't need to suggest his daughter verbally, his actions are doing it for him, and Viserys fell for it hook, line and sinker.
Agree. Also, maybe the show doesn't quite establish it enough, but a lot of ppl have made Littlefinger comparisons and that's off because Otto is actually a major Lord whose seat is Oldtown. He's more like a peacetime version of Tywin Lannister (more like, not the same), not just a sneaky advisor dude. His house and standing is also important in the realm.
@@AndyBestHP Otto isn't the Lord of Oldtown though, that's his older brother. I think that's part of why people make Littlefinger comparisons, Otto does not have any holdings of his own and is only a knight. If his brother doesn't play ball he has zero power outside of his job as Hand...unless he can attach himself to the royal family that is.

Daemon never said "heir for a day" .. only Otto said that when talking to king. If you really look at his face while he is saying God's give and take away part. He wasn't really celebrating the death. This is all Otto.. Also, he never admitted or denied it.
Also during the confrontation in the throne room Daemon didn't reach for his weapon, he simply took a step forward. Testing to see how paranoid his brother has become of him.
Daemon's dragon Caraxes had another rider before Daemon. His rider was Aemon Targaryen he fought in the forth Dornish War but was later killed in the Myrish Invasion also known as the Myrish Bloodbath. After that he was claimed by Daemon who is Aemons nephew, so Caraxes is much more older than Syrax Rhaenyra's Dragon. Not only is Caraxes twice the size and older he has much more combat experience, and is known to be one of the most cunning dragons.
Everybody is misunderstanding that part about Corlys’ “king brother”. 🤦 No. Daemon was being sarcastic about Corlys saying they were “made from the same cloth”, as in they’re alike. Daemon was saying Corlys doesn’t know what it’s like to always be second to a brother who’s the most powerful man in the country, and not even be allowed to fight with him as normal brothers would without it being treason.
Caraxes is much older than daemon, it was bonded to his uncle before him aemon who was caraxes' original rider, when he died and daemon was young he bonded to caraxes so caraxes is much older and larger than syrax and could have killed syrax, the princess and everyone there if daemon wanted as he is also the most experienced dragon rider and the best warrior of the time.
This is what I thought too. Caraxes reacted when Daemon reacted to Otto's words about killing his heir, but when Raenyra arrived Caraxes didn't see Syrax as a threat because Daemon didn't see Rhaenyra as a threat.
@@sanjaysanj5603 from what I've understood there's a difference between riding a dragon and being bonded with one. I'm guessing daemon and caraxes are bonded which suggests caraxes feels what's daemon is feeling
The back and forth between Daemon and Ser Criston was great. Daemon intentionally misnamed Criston and he clapped back, which I believe Daemon respected.
Corlys was straight up when he offered his daughter in marriage. Otto on the other hand is ultimately trying to do the same thing with his 15yr old daughter (not much better, imo) - and HE had a 6 month headstart...
The thing is, the hightowers are one of the most powerful families in Westeros. They control old town where the citadel is. So it’s not the wrong choice, necessarily. The problem like y’all said is, he gave the Valeriyons nothing. Had he decided to help them with the pirate problem, it could have eased tensions. Or, what I’m thinking, married Rhanera to their son. I’m pretty sure they have a son. That way they get that. But he was visibly disgusted at the thought of marrying the 12 year old who looks 9.
The King made a terrible mistake here. Corlys is the head of the current strongest house with his fleet, and his wife/ the King's cousin is probably a dragon rider herself. There children have half Targaryen blood, so they have a chance to become dragon rider themselves. He just made enemy out of the strongest house with a powerful fleet and potentially 3 dragon riders. It will create a rift between the King and his daughter. Marrying Laena at this young age, as wrong as it sounds, could be peceived purely as the King's duty for the realm to strengthen his rule by joining 2 most powerful houses. But now he chose the Hightower girl, yes Otto is the hand of the King and all, but Hightower was not a Great House and do not have that much of influence to be honest. And on top of that, she was her friend, and neither of them told her about this beforehand.
I don't think Corlys has a brother as a king. When he said "We're cut from the same cloth" Daemon's response was just a way of saying "I don't think so because I'm actually royalty"

I changed to Daemon side after episode 2. The king is seriously weak. He failed at major decision in this episode. Now he has crabfeeder and Lord Corlys to lookout for. And maybe less love from Princess Rhaenyra.
I hadn’t thought about it, and I know corlys’ son is also kinda young but he’s much closer in age to Rhaenyra, if they’d promised to marry each other in the future and they came to the throne together that would’ve been a lot less problematic to me than the daughter being married off to the current king. But of course that would mean that Rhaenyra would still be queen and that’s apparently unacceptable lol

Exactly! those 2 can't be the only single high born ladies in the realm. Find one who is above 16 and comes from another great family you want to form a closer connection with that would be beneficial to the crown.

Brother calm down, they control the biggest city, citadel, faith. Could raise an army of 20k on their own ( robb stark had to call the entire North to muster 18 k) Have powerful allies probably redwyn(huge fleet) also could unite the reach behind them despite not being Lord paramount.

It's canon. The king is a good man but a poor ruler who tries to go along to get along. To be a king hard decisions have to be made from time to time. Even if it means raising the ire and disfavor of your subjects.
Corlys is actually the eldest son and the Lord of Driftmark. He says they're both second sons because they were both passed over (Daemon by Rhaenyra being appointed heir and Corlys by his wife not being made the Queen). House Velaryon also always had to get rich and powerful through stuff like trade and never had the luxury of having dragons, like Targaryens who don't have to do anything to be the top dog. Also marrying Alicent does make some sense. The Hightowers are a powerful and rich family, though not as rich and powerful as the Velaryons. They also basically control the High Septon (the Pope basically)
Impressively, Daemon managed to tame and bond with Caraxes after he had hatched. It had been the Dragon of one of his forebears first, and then he proved worthy of being bonded to the Blood Wyrm. What's interesting, is that Balerion, the largestand greatest dragons the Targaryens ever had, bonded with Viserys, which implies to me that Viserys does have good qualities that make him more than the emotional fool we 've seen so far.
@@sharkmanro Maegor certainly possessed......qualities. I wouldn't say they were Kingly or good or even grey, but he knew how to implement his will on the world. He was nothing if not effective at the demolishing the Faith Militant. So from a "he's powerful and he get's things accomplished" sort of quality, I see what Balerion saw in him. I'm just interested in the layers to Viserys. Balerion may not have bonded with him as a result of his kingly qualities, but he did it for a reason. I'm just curious what those reasons are, or what Viserys did.

The way the book is written, I'm just looking for any insight into Viserys that I can since the book is filling in so much of the details.
What I don't get is why is Viserys so worried of Laena's age? This was common back then. It's not like Laena will stay 12 forever. As Lyonel Strong told him, she'll mature. In the books, Rhaenyra was 8 when Viserys appointed her as his heir. Not 15. Laena is only 3 years younger than Rhaenyra in this show. And Daenerys was 13 in the books when she married Khal Drogo. Unless Viserys knows he has little time left, then it seems more reasonable he chose Alicent. He didn't want to wait on Laena to mature. But it's the beginning of the end for these Targs. Once Viserys dies, 💩 hits the fan.

Viserys chose Alicent because he likes her, not because he was thinking about anything politically. In the books he is only 29, so he's expected to have a lot more time. I think that's what really hurt Rhaenyra. She was prepared for her father to marry for duty, but his choice is personal, which feels more like replacing her mother.
It was common for young people to get married super young in the time period this is suppose to take place. Life expectancy was like 30 so you started early
This is false. Life expectancy was around 60s. It's the infant mortality rate that erroneously drives up the "mortality rate" of past eras. But in reality, as long as they didn't die during childhood they'd likely live til their 50s or 60s. Childhood was the real killer back then since children are so weak. Getting past that was key to survival.
It makes sense he’d go to daemon over the princess because he actually has an army and more of a reason to help him fight the crab feeder situation but the princess wouldn’t be able to get an army without the kings approval
A quick reminder that Alicent Hightower in this show is supposed to be 14-15 ish to Laena Velaryon 12. So the king essentially traded a 12 year old for a 14-15 ish year girl. Keep that in mind.....Both are disgusting but one comes with a beneficial alliance & the other made him "think" he had a choice. Again the king could always wait to lady Laena turn 18 before consummating the marriage.
@@sweetonsweet924 this series is a fantasy but it is still technically based off medieval times and in those times due to the conditions and environment a girl was considered grown by as early as 14 or 15 alot of girls were married by that age and yes it is definitely problematic but let's not act like any person in this time period would even be concerned with that problem these are literally monarchs and royals who breed with each other to keep the bloodline "pure"

Robert not really. Rhaenyra doesnt have a solid foothold in the competition for the crown. As soon as Alicent gives the King a new male heir, he will be first in line. Otherwise Corlys will just suggest to marry his son to Rhaenyra in the first place. They are about the same age and an engagement would be enough.

Yeah her succession will be in question but she still has a claim and Corlys would fight for it because his son would be attached to it.
Got to comment in support of Lord Corlys. He laid out two big plays - join our houses and put the doubt to rest, and later, let's wreck the incursions to secure trade and let them know to back off. 2 for 2 on making sense.
In the show, Laena Velaryon is 12. The clip was shut off before Viserys asked her what her mother told her and Laena answered "That I wouldn't have to bed you (the King) until I was 14". It's obvious in the scene that Viserys is very uncomfortable at the prospect of marrying a child, even one who has technically gone through puberty, and while he's trying to be kind to her, he can't wait to get away. But he definitely feels comfortable with Alicent; and that's probably why he eventually chooses her; that plus Alicent is physically more mature and appears to be old enough to have sex and safely deliver children. But Viserys still loves his dead wife Queen Aemma.
There is no other king that Corlys is brother to. Daemon was just being snarky because Corlys was like “we’re the same, you and I” and Daemon was basically saying “No we aren’t.” Corlys is lord of Driftmark. His island is right next ti Dragonstone. His only king is Viserys.
I'm calling it! Otto is the one who is poisoning King Viserys, and is sending his daughter in an attempt to win his affections. And even if he isn't poisoning him, he's probably just taking advantage of the Queen's death to marry his daughter to him and have an heir.
Vicerys made the decision he did bc the Hightowers know he’s a man who thinks with his heart, not his head - so they played to his heart, right from that first night all the way to fixing the broken stone dragon. Otto’s “sympathy” for his difficult decision was the same pattern. Playa got PLAYED.
Corlys brother is not a king. Corlys said that him and daemon were cut from the same cloth and daemon responded by saying "i wasnt aware u had a brother for a king" basically saying how can we be cut from the same cloth if im a prince and you re just a lord

Finally! Someone picked up on the Rhaenyra/Alicent tension! Those two were in love and politics done come and ruined it! Rhaenyra should fight her dad for the throne and Alicent. LOL! In all honesty, as of now, I think Rhaenyra’s the only one who seems to be fit to rule. She’s calm of mind (for now), logical, and makes smart power moves. Viserys is weak and a pushover. Daemon’s temperament is too unstable and immature. Mans is on some petty shit and a king can’t be on that. Rhaenyra could handle this.
The two actresses have confirmed that they played Rhaenyra and Alicent as two best friends who are in love with each other. They even discussed it with the director, so it is official that there’s unspoken tension there. The look Rhaenyra gives her at the end of her very first scene was more than friendly as was her double meaning comment about preferring to be in Alicent’s lap/not inheriting.
Daemon is so desperate for his brother attention that he's willing to play the bad dude, and he still showing some respect for his old brother, but in the end 'little finger' Hightower dude's actions and his own are playing against him and he's being pushed to become a real antagonist as the events has been progressing.
Viserys choose Alicent because he caught feelings. He said that he did not know Leana very well but he has spent the last 6 months getting to know Alicent through their private talks. Plus he he told Rhaenyra that he needed to produce more heirs to help protect their family claim and with Alicent he can start to do that right away while with Laena he would have to wait until she comes of age.
That's his mistake, royal or highborn marriages are made to strengthen your allies not because you caught feelings. Just like Robb Stark making the same misjudgment. Viserys knows that it would somehow affect Rhaenyra that's why he told Alicent not to tell her. Viserys have been making bad decisions since episode 1
Not sure what channels you were watching, but I saw plenty of reactors creeped out by that. I was creeped out too lol. But in general men act like they don't care so I imagine that plays a big part. Whenever there's a story in the news about a female teacher sleeping with a male student, I see men saying they're jealous and wish they'd had such a chance while women criticize her. So it's obviously not treated the same because men act like they don't care.

Also, just because the Velaryons are the most powerful family right now doesn't mean that the Hightowers doesn't bring anything to the table politically. They're also a very powerful family, and with Alicent, the King can start making babies right away and fill in the line of succession with more people instead of just having one. With Laena Velaryon, he'd have to wait 2-3 years before having a child with her, and 2-3 years of having only one heir is very dangerous. That's a long time, and anything could happen to your one and only heir during those 2-3 years.

We didn't heard daemon saying it.. we heard Otto's interpretation...and daemon didn't deny he might have said it as an acknowledgement that even for a day...that baby boy was the hair ...like others say the queen who never was ... As an acknowledgement but it can be said insulting way as well... We could be totally sure if daemon said the heir for a day in a insulting way if we heard/saw him saying directly... then it could be known directly and no amount of excuse would have worked Otto indeed gives little finger vibes
Otto and Alicent is one of my favorite parent-child duo. They're so smart, played their cards so well. Otto knew the king really well. He knows that he loves history, and that he really loved his departed wife, so he sent Alicent to comfort him and have their talks, and Alicent went to the king with a huge book about history. Meanwhile, Lord Corlys sold the idea of of marrying his daughter to the king as a duty. That's not something a grieving man would really want. Of course, a sensitive grieving man like Viserys would pick the comfort that Alicent offered. Hightowers are a powerful family too anyway.

one question for all Who are these "Dragon Riders" the king has? To my knowledge there is his daughter Rhaenyen (good relation with the King) His bother Daemon (beefing with the King) and the queen that got pass over, Corlys Wife Princess Rhaenys ( might have beef with the King?) But who else? It just feel like 2/3 of the dragon riders are against The King so how can he not see that?
Corlys Velaryon don’t have an older brother when he said we are the second sons he was metaphorically talking about his house who are also from old Valeria and was in Westeros long before the Targariyens and they married with each other for hundreds of years even Aegon the Conqueror’s mother was house Velaryon named Valaena Velaryon and she was half-Targaryen herself, through her mother lord Corlys himself is named after the first lord commander of the king’s guard Corlys Velaryon, house Velaryon is overshadowed by house Targaryen cuz they don’t ride dragons only mixed Velaryon and Targaryen can yet house Velaryon is loyal supporters of house Targaryen for the king to choose Hightower over Velaryon is an insult beyond imagination

Otto and maesters are in cahoots to overthrow the Targs. House Hightowers were a wealthy family before Aegon's Conquest. Daemon is trying to get attention so he can finally have a convo with his brother. But as we saw, Otto told Viserys to stay where he was because he knows if the two brothers find a resolution, Daemon will be back at KL and will make life a living hell for Otto. This is why Otto proposed Rhaenyra to be Viserys' next heir. Only to remove Daemon out of there. Even Rhaenyra is aware of this and told Daemon. She knows her case to the throne is weak being she's a woman if her father eventually has a son which he will. Rhaenys, as bitter as she is, is already warning Rhaenyra this. Otto is a wicked dude. He played it well. He knows Daemon was always the biggest threat to the throne. Viserys is a sucker. I bet the maesters had something to do with Aemma and Baelon's deaths. Then Otto's Trojan horse / CCTV cam on the king became his daughter. I do understand where Otto's coming from. If your family aren't dragon lords, that's scary. Dragons are essentially war planes. And the Targs did invade Westeros during the Conquest.
The King keeps getting cut with wounds that don't heal because he is not worthy and should not be sitting on the Throne!! However, Daemon is more like "Joffrey Baratheon or Ramsey Bolton"! and he would not be a good King because he is childish, violent, immature, irrational and he lacks compassion and empathy!!! The King just got groomed by Hightower aka "Little Finger", and his daughter! He should have married Lord Corlys daughter because his first job is to protect the Kingdom! Now the King's daughter has another reason to hate him! Also Lord Carly's should view the King as his enemy!! See Lord Corlys has just as much money and power as the King! The King only real power is that title!!!
That's true, as what they said Velaryons hold the sea and Targaryens have the sky, Viserys doesn't even have full control of his dragon riders (specifically Rhaenyra and Daemon) and the throne is slowly rejecting him.
alicent is being forced to see viserys by her father. you can see how uncomfortable she is by her picking her nails and the disgusted and dejected faces she makes when he looks away from her. she does not want to be doing this. she does not under any circumstances. she is not “good” or manipulating him, she is a 15 year old child and everyone should be equally as disgusted as the match with laena, which is actually the better match because he would not be marrying a child out of lust (like with alicent) and instead out of duty. and you “respect” viserys for going behind his daughters back, avoiding his duties, and marrying the girl who grew up beside his own daughter? (glad adorkable called that out lol).
Viserys could always kill Daemon if he wanted. He only have 1 dragon and few thousand man. Viserys have 8(?) dragons and all army's in 7(6 actually) kindgoms.
10:31 Rhaenyra is now the heir to the Iron Throne and no one on the council respects her and just see it in the scene, Otto cut Rhaenyra when she was talking and Viserys did nothing in that situation If it was Daemon he is already shutting everyone up, mainly from Otto, in the scene with Rhaenys it's Rhaenyra everything Rhaenys said to Rhaenyra is true, Rhaenyra is heir to the Iron Throne and even so she continues to give them wine, but the truth is she's participating in the council, but like Rhaenys said they won't want a woman Viserys shouldn't have married Alicent he made a wrong choice and now there will be consequences for his choice, viserys should have married Laena in the book she is At least Rhaenyra's age different from the series they put a child I don't know why they did that Probably to be more controversial because it's a child, but either way he should have chosen Laena and not Alicent and you'll realize his choice was a mistake when you watch the rest of the episodes.
Not to say it makes it better, but I think Viserys is supposed to be in his thirties. He and Aemma married when they were young, I think Aemma was like 12 and he was almost 20. Rhaenyra was her second pregnancy, and she is 15 in HOTD so I'd say Viserys is around a bit more than 35 years old, but not more than 40. Not sure if I'm correct, but he is not that old, plus he had already married a child before for political reasons.
Daemon doesn't have the qualities of a good king. Yes, he would be strong, but he doesn't have the cleverness to be an effective leader. Just like what she (didn't catch her name) said in the beginning, you're now the first in the line of succession and the first thing you do is do/say something stupid, and he may not have said it with malicious intent, but it was still stupid to stay especially when you know Otto and the others who know how to play the game of thrones have spies everywhere. If Daemon is king, he'd be played by methodical men and women like Otto. King Robert was strong too but he was getting played all along.
I don't get these weak-minded people. Laena Velaryon was the better choice. Uniting the strongest family (Targaryen) and the wealthiest family (Velaryon) is a no-brainer. Why put age in front of everything? Doesn't matter the number, if it's 12,13,14..... Laena wasn't going to spread her legs and pop babies right at that moment. That would come much later The only important thing was to join their houses and make Laena the QUEEN.
Just because the Velaryons are the most powerful family at this point in time doesn't mean that other houses are weak. Hightowers are also really powerful, and the problem with Laena is that the King will not have another heir for like 2-3 years if he doesn't bed her until she's 14. With Alicent, they can start making babies right away. 2-3 years at that time is a very long time to have only one heir, anything could happen to Rhaenyra during those 2-3 years, so making other babies that will fill in the line of succession is also a good choice.
@@iconoclast6555 The only way for Viserys to keep Rhaenyra as his heir is also the Velaryons by marrying her to Laenor. Even if Viserys gets a son with Laena, the Velaryons would never think of maving a move to place the son to the throne because Rhaenyra's child with Laenor would be her direct heirs. This would keep the stability and peace in the realm. What Viserys failed to understand is that, no matter whom he chooses as his next wife, if he get a son with that girl, then the girl's family would certainly make a move to place their blood to the throne. And now, Viserys is set marry Alicent Hightower, a woman from a family with great ambitions, and not to mention the military power to back up those ambitions. With all that power and wealth, there is no way in hell the Hightowers would let Rhaenyra take the throne.
Just adding to this, the optimal time to give birth is mid twenties, when the body is most fertile and fully developed (according to science anyway). But overall women's "pretty good" age range for birth is from around 21-32. Before or after is more likely to have problems, though for women the real decline starts around 35. Teenagers who give birth are more likely to suffer from defects and death because their bodies aren't even developed yet and birth puts unnecessary stress on a body that isn't fit for it.

Viserys chose to marry the girl who has been comforting him in his time of grief for 6 months. She was actively courting him at the request of her father. He grew to like her. He was talking to her more than his own daughter and he let his guard down around her more than he has ever done with Otto. Then Otto was like ‘as a husband who also lost his wife, I could never replace my wife for duties sake.’ Subtly putting the idea in the kings head that he should marry for love not duty (duty being marrying Lady Laena) knowing darn well Alicent has been charming the king for months.
Then Alicent is all like ‘A good and KIND queen would be best for the realm’ ‘I’m sure lady Laena would be a KIND queen’ then she does something nice for the king by repairing his toy. He goes “that was very KIND of you, Alicent”
The Hightowers are subtle with their manipulation but effective.
There is that scene where he placed his hand in the maggots. You could interpret that as a rotten right hand. This show is awesome with the hidden details and foreshadowing.

Yeah, it's a good scene and good writing. In their own ways, neither of them really want to fight Viserys, they are frustrated and lost face, and feel their own 'areas' are under threat because with a passive king, so many elements are pushing against the edges and testing what they can get away with. It makes sense that first they would go after the Stepstones incursions, for Daemon to show his value to the realm, and for Corlys to secure his territory. Also, I am hyped to see them roll up and wreck shop.
Otto really has Viserys dancing in the palm of his hand. This is like watching a train wreck.

I love Daemon's petty ass. George RR Martin has said Daemon is his favorite Targaryen because he's made of equal parts light and dark. When you stop and think about it, he just wants his brother's approval. He doesn't even want to be king. He just wants to feel valued and respected. I know where this goes, so I won't spoil anything. But you'll see why Daemon's my favorite. Corlys is a close second. My man has literally sailed everywhere on the map and came back richer than the king and the Lannisters!

Caraxes and Syrax were chirping at each other as soon as Rhaenyra did the flyby, that’s how you can subtlety tell that Daemon and Rhaenyra have no wish to harm each other. Both the dragons growled at the other people there, but not each other.
I think Caraxes even gives a dragon smile as he watches them come in 🤷🏼

Caraxes and Syrax' vocals to each other sound like happy greetings verging on flirtation. They are very cute together.
Corlys made the right call going to Daemon... Notice that they are not talking about joining forces against the king, staging a coup or anything like that... Corlys wants someone who will give him support and authority to go and deal with the Crabfeeder; and Daemon can do that because on the one hand he is a prince who is actually loved and respected by a lot of people thru out the realm, but also feared; he is in the outs with the king, so he can operate independently with little risk of getting in trouble because of his status and he is an experienced commander with a very large dragon... Rhaenyra is still under the kings thumb or authority and she isn't a commander or a fighter and her dragon is really a show pony that has been used for joy rides; she isn't going to sanction an all out assault without going to her father first.
Both Daemon and Corlys are thinking about the standing of their houses; Daemon thinks that the king and therefor the Targaryens look weak by allowing these people to reek havoc in the Stepstones (which are not part of the territory and jurisdiction of the 7 kingdoms)... And Corlys knows the ships and men he is loosing (because the Stepstones is a main trade pass between one continent to the other) are going to eventually hurt his family and his home, that's his living, sea trade
What Corlys is looking for is: 1) clear out those shipping lanes and get that situation stable by killing this group; and 2) get in early on the good side of Daemon because he considers him a stronger leader than the king, and this isn't new, the first episode we saw how Corlys was really the only member of the counsel apart from the king that supported Daemon
And what Daemon wants; apart from clearing out this mess that is clearly hurting the realm and his family as effective rulers... Is to solidify himself as an assertive and worthy candidate for the throne, the gain the support and respect of the people in the realm once he solves this problem for everybody... he kills everyone there, the seas go back to business and he comes back a hero and an even more proven warrior and commander; something that a lot of people in the realm consider important to be a king, being a strong military leader.
I disliked Daemon in ep 1 mostly because of "the king for a day" but I realized that the tone of the delivery of your statement is very important, we know he said the phrase, what we don't know is how he said it because Otto made that decision for us, Daemon is impulsive but he values his family, he could really just honoring Prince Baelon he wasn't partying or anything he was just drinking by himself. I came to love his character in episode 2 and i'm rooting for him, he's right Viserys is a weak king.
Lord Corlys is 1000% correct! Dragons are like Nuclear Missiles! You don't have to use them! As a sign of force you just need to let the other guy know that if you have to you will! The King is done! He is unfit to sit in that Throne and the Throne knows this!!! Daemon is also unfit to sit on the Throne! Daemon is a hot head, violent, only knows how to use force! Lacks compassion and empathy! The people would not support due to love they would stand by him because of fear! That is never a good quality in a King! Look up "Ramsey Bolton or Joffrey Baratheon"!The Princess will have to turn on her ex friend because Hightower is also pulling his daughter's strings!

You underestimate Otto. By the king's own words, he trusts Otto. Otto sent his daughter to "comfort" the king. Back then you didn't send your daughter to comfort a man unless you expect specific end results. Now the king finds comfort in his talks with Allicent, Otto's daughter, the man he trusts, Allicent who is already of age. Otto doesn't need to suggest his daughter verbally, his actions are doing it for him, and Viserys fell for it hook, line and sinker.
Agree. Also, maybe the show doesn't quite establish it enough, but a lot of ppl have made Littlefinger comparisons and that's off because Otto is actually a major Lord whose seat is Oldtown. He's more like a peacetime version of Tywin Lannister (more like, not the same), not just a sneaky advisor dude. His house and standing is also important in the realm.

Otto isn't the Lord of Oldtown though, that's his older brother. I think that's part of why people make Littlefinger comparisons, Otto does not have any holdings of his own and is only a knight. If his brother doesn't play ball he has zero power outside of his job as Hand...unless he can attach himself to the royal family that is.

Also during the confrontation in the throne room Daemon didn't reach for his weapon, he simply took a step forward. Testing to see how paranoid his brother has become of him.
Daemon's dragon Caraxes had another rider before Daemon. His rider was Aemon Targaryen he fought in the forth Dornish War but was later killed in the Myrish Invasion also known as the Myrish Bloodbath.
After that he was claimed by Daemon who is Aemons nephew, so Caraxes is much more older than Syrax Rhaenyra's Dragon. Not only is Caraxes twice the size and older he has much more combat experience, and is known to be one of the most cunning dragons.
Everybody is misunderstanding that part about Corlys’ “king brother”. 🤦 No. Daemon was being sarcastic about Corlys saying they were “made from the same cloth”, as in they’re alike. Daemon was saying Corlys doesn’t know what it’s like to always be second to a brother who’s the most powerful man in the country, and not even be allowed to fight with him as normal brothers would without it being treason.

Caraxes is much older than daemon, it was bonded to his uncle before him aemon who was caraxes' original rider, when he died and daemon was young he bonded to caraxes so caraxes is much older and larger than syrax and could have killed syrax, the princess and everyone there if daemon wanted as he is also the most experienced dragon rider and the best warrior of the time.
This is what I thought too. Caraxes reacted when Daemon reacted to Otto's words about killing his heir, but when Raenyra arrived Caraxes didn't see Syrax as a threat because Daemon didn't see Rhaenyra as a threat.

The back and forth between Daemon and Ser Criston was great. Daemon intentionally misnamed Criston and he clapped back, which I believe Daemon respected.
Corlys was straight up when he offered his daughter in marriage. Otto on the other hand is ultimately trying to do the same thing with his 15yr old daughter (not much better, imo) - and HE had a 6 month headstart...
The thing is, the hightowers are one of the most powerful families in Westeros. They control old town where the citadel is. So it’s not the wrong choice, necessarily. The problem like y’all said is, he gave the Valeriyons nothing. Had he decided to help them with the pirate problem, it could have eased tensions. Or, what I’m thinking, married Rhanera to their son. I’m pretty sure they have a son. That way they get that. But he was visibly disgusted at the thought of marrying the 12 year old who looks 9.

The King made a terrible mistake here. Corlys is the head of the current strongest house with his fleet, and his wife/ the King's cousin is probably a dragon rider herself. There children have half Targaryen blood, so they have a chance to become dragon rider themselves. He just made enemy out of the strongest house with a powerful fleet and potentially 3 dragon riders.
It will create a rift between the King and his daughter. Marrying Laena at this young age, as wrong as it sounds, could be peceived purely as the King's duty for the realm to strengthen his rule by joining 2 most powerful houses. But now he chose the Hightower girl, yes Otto is the hand of the King and all, but Hightower was not a Great House and do not have that much of influence to be honest. And on top of that, she was her friend, and neither of them told her about this beforehand.

I changed to Daemon side after episode 2. The king is seriously weak. He failed at major decision in this episode. Now he has crabfeeder and Lord Corlys to lookout for. And maybe less love from Princess Rhaenyra.
I hadn’t thought about it, and I know corlys’ son is also kinda young but he’s much closer in age to Rhaenyra, if they’d promised to marry each other in the future and they came to the throne together that would’ve been a lot less problematic to me than the daughter being married off to the current king. But of course that would mean that Rhaenyra would still be queen and that’s apparently unacceptable lol

It's canon. The king is a good man but a poor ruler who tries to go along to get along. To be a king hard decisions have to be made from time to time. Even if it means raising the ire and disfavor of your subjects.

Corlys is actually the eldest son and the Lord of Driftmark. He says they're both second sons because they were both passed over (Daemon by Rhaenyra being appointed heir and Corlys by his wife not being made the Queen). House Velaryon also always had to get rich and powerful through stuff like trade and never had the luxury of having dragons, like Targaryens who don't have to do anything to be the top dog.
Also marrying Alicent does make some sense. The Hightowers are a powerful and rich family, though not as rich and powerful as the Velaryons. They also basically control the High Septon (the Pope basically)

Impressively, Daemon managed to tame and bond with Caraxes after he had hatched. It had been the Dragon of one of his forebears first, and then he proved worthy of being bonded to the Blood Wyrm. What's interesting, is that Balerion, the largestand greatest dragons the Targaryens ever had, bonded with Viserys, which implies to me that Viserys does have good qualities that make him more than the emotional fool we 've seen so far.
Viserys bonding with Balerion doesn't necesseraly mean anything. By that logic Maegor should have been a good king
@@sharkmanro Maegor certainly possessed......qualities. I wouldn't say they were Kingly or good or even grey, but he knew how to implement his will on the world. He was nothing if not effective at the demolishing the Faith Militant. So from a "he's powerful and he get's things accomplished" sort of quality, I see what Balerion saw in him. I'm just interested in the layers to Viserys. Balerion may not have bonded with him as a result of his kingly qualities, but he did it for a reason. I'm just curious what those reasons are, or what Viserys did.

What I don't get is why is Viserys so worried of Laena's age? This was common back then. It's not like Laena will stay 12 forever. As Lyonel Strong told him, she'll mature.
In the books, Rhaenyra was 8 when Viserys appointed her as his heir. Not 15. Laena is only 3 years younger than Rhaenyra in this show. And Daenerys was 13 in the books when she married Khal Drogo.
Unless Viserys knows he has little time left, then it seems more reasonable he chose Alicent. He didn't want to wait on Laena to mature. But it's the beginning of the end for these Targs. Once Viserys dies, 💩 hits the fan.

Viserys chose Alicent because he likes her, not because he was thinking about anything politically. In the books he is only 29, so he's expected to have a lot more time. I think that's what really hurt Rhaenyra. She was prepared for her father to marry for duty, but his choice is personal, which feels more like replacing her mother.

This is false. Life expectancy was around 60s. It's the infant mortality rate that erroneously drives up the "mortality rate" of past eras. But in reality, as long as they didn't die during childhood they'd likely live til their 50s or 60s. Childhood was the real killer back then since children are so weak. Getting past that was key to survival.

A quick reminder that Alicent Hightower in this show is supposed to be 14-15 ish to Laena Velaryon 12. So the king essentially traded a 12 year old for a 14-15 ish year girl. Keep that in mind.....Both are disgusting but one comes with a beneficial alliance & the other made him "think" he had a choice. Again the king could always wait to lady Laena turn 18 before consummating the marriage.
Plus, these girls are two or tree years apart so how did Viserys made the right choice morally ?

If you wanna marry Alicent then do that but give Corlys your daughter, the named heir, as wife to his son. Sucks for Rhaenyra but it's a good political move. And then send a dragonrider or two to patrol the Stepstones while you continue talks with the Free Cities. Avoids war, shows force, solves the pirate issue if you attack out of self-defense.

Robert not really. Rhaenyra doesnt have a solid foothold in the competition for the crown. As soon as Alicent gives the King a new male heir, he will be first in line. Otherwise Corlys will just suggest to marry his son to Rhaenyra in the first place. They are about the same age and an engagement would be enough.

In the show, Laena Velaryon is 12. The clip was shut off before Viserys asked her what her mother told her and Laena answered "That I wouldn't have to bed you (the King) until I was 14". It's obvious in the scene that Viserys is very uncomfortable at the prospect of marrying a child, even one who has technically gone through puberty, and while he's trying to be kind to her, he can't wait to get away. But he definitely feels comfortable with Alicent; and that's probably why he eventually chooses her; that plus Alicent is physically more mature and appears to be old enough to have sex and safely deliver children. But Viserys still loves his dead wife Queen Aemma.
There is no other king that Corlys is brother to. Daemon was just being snarky because Corlys was like “we’re the same, you and I” and Daemon was basically saying “No we aren’t.”

In all honesty, as of now, I think Rhaenyra’s the only one who seems to be fit to rule. She’s calm of mind (for now), logical, and makes smart power moves. Viserys is weak and a pushover. Daemon is so desperate for his brother attention that he's willing to play the bad dude, and he still showing some respect for his old brother, but in the end 'little finger' Hightower dude's actions and his own are playing against him and he's being pushed to become a real antagonist as the events has been progressing.
Viserys choose Alicent because he caught feelings. He said that he did not know Leana very well but he has spent the last 6 months getting to know Alicent through their private talks. Plus he he told Rhaenyra that he needed to produce more heirs to help protect their family claim and with Alicent he can start to do that right away while with Laena he would have to wait until she comes of age.
That's his mistake, royal or highborn marriages are made to strengthen your allies not because you caught feelings. Just like Robb Stark making the same misjudgment. Viserys knows that it would somehow affect Rhaenyra that's why he told Alicent not to tell her. Viserys have been making bad decisions since episode 1

Not sure what channels you were watching, but I saw plenty of reactors creeped out by that. I was creeped out too lol. But in general men act like they don't care so I imagine that plays a big part. Whenever there's a story in the news about a female teacher sleeping with a male student, I see men saying they're jealous and wish they'd had such a chance while women criticize her. So it's obviously not treated the same because men act like they don't care.

Also, just because the Velaryons are the most powerful family right now doesn't mean that the Hightowers doesn't bring anything to the table politically. They're also a very powerful family, and with Alicent, the King can start making babies right away and fill in the line of succession with more people instead of just having one. With Laena Velaryon, he'd have to wait 2-3 years before having a child with her, and 2-3 years of having only one heir is very dangerous. That's a long time, and anything could happen to your one and only heir during those 2-3 years.

Otto and Alicent is one of my favorite parent-child duo. They're so smart, played their cards so well. Otto knew the king really well. He knows that he loves history, and that he really loved his departed wife, so he sent Alicent to comfort him and have their talks, and Alicent went to the king with a huge book about history. Meanwhile, Lord Corlys sold the idea of of marrying his daughter to the king as a duty. That's not something a grieving man would really want. Of course, a sensitive grieving man like Viserys would pick the comfort that Alicent offered. Hightowers are a powerful family too anyway.

Otto and maesters are in cahoots to overthrow the Targs. House Hightowers were a wealthy family before Aegon's Conquest. Daemon is trying to get attention so he can finally have a convo with his brother.
But as we saw, Otto told Viserys to stay where he was because he knows if the two brothers find a resolution, Daemon will be back at KL and will make life a living hell for Otto. This is why Otto proposed Rhaenyra to be Viserys' next heir. Only to remove Daemon out of there.
Even Rhaenyra is aware of this and told Daemon. She knows her case to the throne is weak being she's a woman if her father eventually has a son which he will. Rhaenys, as bitter as she is, is already warning Rhaenyra this.
Otto is a wicked dude. He played it well. He knows Daemon was always the biggest threat to the throne. Viserys is a sucker. I bet the maesters had something to do with Aemma and Baelon's deaths. Then Otto's Trojan horse / CCTV cam on the king became his daughter.

Just like what she (didn't catch her name) said in the beginning, you're now the first in the line of succession and the first thing you do is do/say something stupid, and he may not have said it with malicious intent, but it was still stupid to stay especially when you know Otto and the others who know how to play the game of thrones have spies everywhere. If Daemon is king, he'd be played by methodical men and women like Otto. King Robert was strong too but he was getting played all along.

What Viserys failed to understand is that, no matter whom he chooses as his next wife, if he get a son with that girl, then the girl's family would certainly make a move to place their blood to the throne. And now, Viserys is set marry Alicent Hightower, a woman from a family with great ambitions, and not to mention the military power to back up those ambitions. Just as an FYI, child birth is easier the younger the women is. It gets more dangerous the older the women gets.
Just adding to this, the optimal time to give birth is mid twenties, when the body is most fertile and fully developed (according to science anyway). But overall women's "pretty good" age range for birth is from around 21-32. Before or after is more likely to have problems, though for women the real decline starts around 35.
Teenagers who give birth are more likely to suffer from defects and death because their bodies aren't even developed yet and birth puts unnecessary stress on a body that isn't fit for it.
