  • Who Is Erika?
Dive into the captivating history behind one of Germany's most iconic melodies - 'Erika'. Uncover the origins, controversies, and enduring significance of this haunting tune.
From the shadowy corners of history emerges 'Erika', a melody that transcends time and ideology, echoing themes of longing and love. Created by German composer Herms Niel in 1938, 'Erika' was originally conceived as a military marching tune, but its legacy extends far beyond its wartime origins.
Despite its popularity, 'Erika' has not been immune to controversy. Some have cast it in a dark light due to its association with the regime of the time. In fact, in 2019, the song was removed from the official Herms Niel RUclips channel after being flagged for its perceived connections to violence and hatred.
But what is the true story behind 'Erika'? Was it simply a product of its time, or does it carry a deeper significance? Join us as we explore Herms Niel's own account of the song's creation, involving a chance encounter with his dog Dina and a misidentified flower.
Beyond its musical origins, 'Erika' holds symbolic meaning both as a flower and as a representation of a soldier's longing for home and loved ones during wartime. Its spirited melody served as a source of inspiration and camaraderie for German soldiers amidst the chaos of World War Two, offering solace in the face of adversity.
Thank you for joining us on this journey into the heart of 'Erika'. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more fascinating insights into history and music.

My name is Erika - my German father (who was born in ‘38) gave me this name and I love it (Fyi My father’s family did not belong to the Nazi party)
My father would sing this song to me when I was little. I understood it to be a Germany Army marching song. I was super surprised when I heard it used in Schindler’s List movie. From then I found out the more sinister meaning of the song.
Thank you for this video - I’ve learned more about the song I was named after!
