    Kasparov arranged a Eurotel Trophy match in Prague pitting Shirov against Judith Polgar, the highest rated woman in history. . . .
    One of the spectators was actor Woody Harrelson, who was on his way back from a film festival in Karlsbad. He stole the show by playing a skittles game with Kasparov to prove he is also a "natural born killer" at chess.
    The second game was played with a lot of banter as Woody tried the scholar's mate. Woody, who got tips from two grandmasters all along, jokingly asked the crowd to please refrain from giving his opponent any advice. In the end, Kasparov conceded a draw as Woody's entourage dragged him to his plane back to America.
    In "Dutch Treat" June 17, 2000, Hans Ree added in passing:
    Draw agreed. It has to be admitted that Harrison was helped by the grandmasters who were in Prague at the occasion of the match between Shirov and Judit Polgar, but that does not alter the fact that the so-called beginner's move 2. Qh5 makes quite a decent impression here.
    Woody Harrelson vs Garry Kasparov
    "Cheers!"

    I was at this Shirov-Polgar match, and witnessed this specific game. It happened in the VIP room at the tournament, so few people were present. There were perhaps 10-15 people total in the room at the time, max. Woody made the Qh5 move all by himself, and elicited a shock and laughs from everyone there. But I can confirm, it was all Woody. After the Qh5 move, Woody said, "Let's see if he knows this one." Soon after, however, it became a bit of team play against Kasparov, in a very friendly manner, but Woody ultimately decided on what to play. He seemed like a solid player. He also seemed a bit stoned when he arrived, so he was playing with a handicap. But with Woody, you never know... :-)

    • @PatrickPray
      @PatrickPray 6 лет назад +238

      In my case it means "invited." You could not purchase VIP tickets to this event, as I recall. It was a separate, private room for organizers, invited chess players who also commented like Yasser, celebrities, and people who were lucky enough (me!) to know the organizer of the event... The organizer was trying to get more into chess events, he had previously done mega rock events (Michael Jackson, Madonna). Although I believe he quickly learned chess was a cesspool of politics and nothing much came of this initiative.

      During that game the world was using forums to communicate and there was heavy suspicion that Kasparov was reading these forums too, seeing what the enemy was thinking is cheating. And then after the game he confirmed it himself. That's cheating based on any definition you want to apply to the word.

      There is this german "RUclips-group" called RocketBeans and like 2 month ago they had Jan Gustaffson (I think germanys top 1 or 2 player?) in a show. They would show 2 games. First was 1 of the RB-guys against the chat (they used a website where everyone can vote for moves). The chat had 1 or 2 minutes to talk each turn, which isnt much considering there is like 1000 viewers that could communicate. Nevertheless, according to Gustaffson the Chat mad basically no mistakes and crushed the RB-guy. Next game was vs. Gustaffson himself. He said he might loose cause people would use engines. I personally think a few people used engines, but there wasnt time to communicate and overall it seemed pretty legit. 1000 (mostly) non-chessplayers vs Gustaffson and Gustaffson won it pretty convinvingly if you ask me, never really was in trouble. Actually the chat kind of repeated moves from the first game and therefore it was pretty easy for Gustaffson to read them.

      I lost to a Scholar's mate on an Exhibition Match.
      I didn't play a simple Petrov Defense but a pseudo-Caro Kahn but switched to Blackburne Mating Manuever.
      It didn't work and cost me the game after I saw both of the Queen and the Bishop already in the position to attack the weakest point of my ranks.

    Would we expect anything less than a Fool's Mate from Harrelson against Kasparov?! Loved it! Had me falling out of my chair laughing. Thanks for the laughs, Woody! No one else would dare show us how Kasparov might respond to such a challenge. This was pure fun and joy. Thank you both, Champ Garry Kasparov and the guy we'd all like to have for a neighbor, Woody Harrelson!! Heck, I'd like to have you both for neighbors. 😎

This showed a different response to Kasparovs to demonstrate how to develop your pieces and push away the misplaced attacking queen. Oddly enough the Kasparov Harrilson game was in that data base for that program, always wondered why they were playing.
