“Everything in the system is self-regulating and self-adjusting, and it’s decentralised and autonomous, and we can see these phenomena much better in nature than we can in human-made entities; Bitcoin is a lot more like an organism than it is like a company or like a government.”
    - Tomer Strolight

    Role: Writer
The modern capitalist system is based on centralised and hierarchical structures of control. Bitcoin is a divergent innovation, structured to be decentralised. Progress is made through consensus, which forgoes the need to know or trust any of the parties involved.
This can be an anathema to some people who are introduced to Bitcoin. They can not conceptualise how such a system can operate. This is partly because there has not been a great history of decentralised governance systems in modern societies.
Part of the issue may also be how people conceptualise Bitcoin. Trying to frame it around man-made systems may be a fool's errand.
Is it better to compare it to less understood yet ubiquitous biological systems, specifically the human brain?
In this interview, I talk to Bitcoin writer Tomer Strolight. We discuss how Bitcoin is analogous to the human brain, the organisation of decentralised systems, and the emergent nature of consciousness.

I don't often write comments here but just want to say I really enjoy you inviting people of different fields talk about bitcoin. Nothing against the bigger talking heads, but reinviting them over again just creates a huge circle jerk. Interviews like this really extends the horizon and brings in more curious people into the community.

Very interesting, thank you. As much as I enjoyed this, I would argue that consciousness is different than what Tomer describes around 41:30. "Taking information from the outside world, processing, making sense of it and then taking action" is a bit of a stretch - or a very very generous definition of "consciousness". A Tesla EV does that, yet I don't think it is conscious. An Alexa/Siri/Google Assistant can get orders/requests via voice (outside world) and process them, but again, not quite the same. Consciousness in humans is a slippery enough subject and not that well understood, so it's a hard sell that a machine is easily identifiable as conscious. I'm not trying to argue that humans are better, just that there are a few things humans do when thinking that are not easy to see in a system like Alexa, Tesla EVs or Bitcoin, for that matter. Super interesting analogy and discussion, anyways. Congrats to both.

@@tetrixdogbro that's such a grown up question mate!! Wow! How old are you? How about you explain to us how the famous double slit experiment works? And when you've explained that Einstein, how about how the delayed eraser experiment! Showing proof is too hard of a question to answer in so many cases, especially science, that's an Einstein quote!!

All of humanity functions like a large neural network, with sub networks forming within different areas of specialization, which all feed into the over all meta network. I agree the Bitcoin ecosystem functions like a brain, but so does economics in general, politics, culture, the internet (the first time cybernetic attributes were adopted into the meta brain) and social media, and so on. The next question one might ask is: what sorts of thoughts does the meta brain have, and is it self aware? A meta "mind" perhaps? Also, how much of the activity we see around us is simply because of the meta brain thinking thoughts? Perhaps this is what mankind has thought of as "fate" in the past. Do we think the over all meta brain is greater or lessor, in terms of power or function, than the brains we have? It's easily to think we're the apex creature on earth, but what if we're only part of the apex creature on earth? Do the neurons in your brain understand they are contributing to the emergent phenomena that is you? Is the creature aware of us in turn? (It took us quite a while to become aware of the fact we ourselves are meta creatures.) Perhaps history is the story of the maturation of the meta creature of earth. If this be the case, and if "we" were visited by aliens, perhaps it would not be "we" who were visited, but the over all creature. How does a creature at that scale conductive itself with others? We could just keep picking at this idea, and it goes deep.

this topic is so deep. our limited logic and perception of this world will not get you far. you need to understand spiritual aspect . I recommend to listen to Sadhguru for more deep knowledge. Its time for all of us, Bitcoiners to initiate into spiritual path to guide next generation to a healthy, wealthy and prosperous future.

Alpha go I think has a non-trivial number of neurons. some quick googling suggested 13 layers, each with many neurons, maybe hundreds of thousands of total neurons. The point still stands though :-) orders of magnitude of difference
