I thought I'd backed up my files into microsoft Onedrive but they went into their recycle bin. and now I have a message saying . recycle bin cant be opened yet. I need help Please. Regards Jan

Great video- thanks! Level II- over the years, I have got a hodgepodge of files on OneDrive, my desktop PC and my laptop. Love it if you could divine a strategy to "resync" all of it. Merge the Document directories? Copy to an external drive, delete everything, then start over? Switch to Mac? Argh! I have good connection speed to OneDrive, so that will save some time. Thanks in advance, I'm stumped.
All of these problems that need fixing in this video are also arguments to NOT use OneDrive, NOT use Windows, and maybe NOT use anything from Microsoft! Other cloud services and systems don't have any of the problems mentioned.
Oh god, OneDrive has not given me anything but problems. I synced my PC to OneDrive because i have an small SSD and Microsoft offered 1TB cloud storage backup, but it never mentioned that it would change all the paths of the files and folders. So now many of the project files i was working do not load properly because the routes are different. Then, to make use of the cloud storage, i started to upload some files using the website app, files that i wanted to exist ONLY to the cloud storage. But then i realized these files and some other older office files started to show up in my PC computer in the users folder, taking up more storage! So i had to "freed" them with the contextual menu. And it did nothing. They are still in my PC. It was so confusing to see these files on the file explorer, files that they were not supposed to be there, that i tried to move them to a new folder inside my synced PC that i named "Online exclusive files" and... it seemed to move them with no issue. A miracle!? No. I went to check them out on the website app the next day, the new folder was there but the files did not move. They were still there alongside all other main library folders like Desktop, Documents, Images, AppData, etc. it made no sense at all. So i move them again, this time using the website app.... and it did not let me do it! It said that the "the path of these files do not exist". But i can clearly see them and download them from the website! Now my synced PC shows some file outside the "Online exclusive files" folder and some inside that folder. And on the Website it shows that no files had been moved. And the last new thing that is happening now, is that there is an alert to shorten the name of 5 files i moved to that folder. Files that are already synced on the PC, and it doesn't let me rename them.
I found your video when searching for "How to resolve conflicts", which this video doesn't cover. I have a Word doc that tells me I have a conflict (I suppose between what's on my computer and what's last known online). I also have a red X next to that file (and next to OneDrive). Similar to the green check, but a red X. Clicking the red X I'm told that I need to resolve the file, and that I can do that in Word if I would like. I say, sure! So the document opens in Word, but there's no indication of 2 files, and there's no indication of any discreprancy or change made since the sync... How is that feature supposed to work? I don't want to accidentally delete a couple hours worth of work.

It's hard to diagnose that without seeing your environment, but a few things to try-open both word files (online and on your computer) and see which one has more pages or word count. That may help to see which one you want to keep. Does someone else have access to your files? Perhaps they made a change? Today OneDrive messes all of my work files. I disable my OneDrive on February, decide to re-enable OneDrive for backup on October. Guess what? OneDrive decided to download all files from my backup on February and Override my current files. It doesn't seems OneDrive compare which the latest version or fail to do so. I never ever had this issue with Dropbox. Even if I turn on my old PC with different user name than my new PC, its just works. Its true OneDrive is cheaper and over more integration with Microsoft ecosystem compared to Dropbox. But this kind of issue really drives me insane. Sorry for the rant, I used Dropbox professionally at home while OneDrive is for work from my employer. Avoid OneDrive desktop app!!!
Hi. Thanks for the comment. I think once you get used to all the nuances in OneDrive, it is a good competitor for Dropbox. But you are correct, there are a lot of settings to get used to and nuances in the source vs destination folders, plus knowing when to sync with confidence. Sorry that happened to you.

Dont sync the file directly but using free file sync app to mirror the file from source location to OneDrive location. That way OneDrive won't accidentally override your file but we still can backup them to the cloud.

Yes, unfortunately there are a lot of issues with a mac. You could try creating the folder first on the mac or first on OneDrive (which ever one you did not try first). I'm trying to use OneDrive on a Mac. The file naming conventions are really restrictive for OD, so when I try to NOT sync my Desktop or Documents folders, weirdly, I can't -- because I have to rename all the problematic files before I'm allow to see the Don't Sync option. Worse... when I remove the offending files to another place and select Don't Sync, that only lasts till I put the offending files back. I only want OD to sync my OneDrive folder. Why is that so hard to do? Also, why have I not had any file naming problems with Google Drive or DropBox, but only on OneDrive? I'm thinking of returning it.
Hi. Yes, there are a lot of issues between Microsoft and a Mac. Many things you can do in Excel on a PC that you can't do on a Mac. I think part of the issue is because the operating systems are different between a PC, which is what Excel was built on, and a Mac, that has been modified to be able to use a Mac, but isn't the ideal solution. Dropbox and Google Drive are cloud based. You could try the cloud based OD only and not your desktop.
There is something in my account that wont allow me to sync to Onedrive. Like many out there, it sucks that no matter how many videos we find online we most likely CANT use them much as OD seems to update their software DAILY. I have uninstalled/re-installed OD several times and every time is the same result : a couple SHARED folders populate and the cloud icon says " up to date" tho there is nothing syncing or even uploading. Rinse/repeat, same result. Tried a fresh account, logged in, SHARED folders started syncing and uploading/downloading. If anyone out is at a dead end, it seems there is a setting or corrupt file within MS User account that wont let sync correctly. A new account, sign-in, fixed my issue.
For some reason, I still have files (available online only) on the Onedrive website despite having deleted them from my Windows 8.1 computer yet I am only able to view the Onedrive files on my computer if I am connected to a network. Would you know why this happens?
OneDrive has so many problems. When I support users I find 20-30% of them have some sort of sync problem. It really needs improvement. If you have some training it can be ok and work well, but even experienced users struggle and possibly have data at risk. The synchronization is not intuitive to fix and even the file path (eg \OneDrive\Desktop Vs \Desktop) is confusing to users. Then add SharePoint to the equation and chaos ensues.

i have a External HDD drive some saves go to One Drive its ok on the whole sometimes there are slight pauses when running programs (game saves) it is synced is a way to help it run better ?? it is a great program for saving space
Thans for the comment. Int he past, files on an external drive have been slower than the cloud, but technology is always changing, so it's good to do a speed test in your own environment. There are a lot of variables that can affect speed from set up to set up including your Wifi speed, network speed, drive speed, etc. Hope you find what works best in your scenario.

I chose to use the Free Up Space option on Onedrive, and now all my files on my computer are gone and in the cloud. The problem with that is now it is basically impossible to get my files back because the download speeds are so slow. LIKE INCREDIBLY SLOW! The download times are not hours, not days, but weeks, actually probably months...I'm FUCKED!!!
would you please discuss the issue of syncing Outlook pst files with one drive - even then Outlook is open - for a while I could sync pst files while still using outlook... with no errors in OneDrive... I had to create new pst files... now I get errors in OneDrive that the file is in use... so it won't sync. is there a fix for this?
Are you using One Drive Personal or One Drive for Business? I don't think the personal one will allow a pst. You can check this link for more about possibly using One Drive for Business to sync: learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/block-file-types Hope that helps!

I can see the onedrive in my taskbar, but it only opens the file when I click on it. I used to be able to left click and it would show me the files being synced. It doesn't do that anymore. Also, onedrive is not listed in my apps.

Yes, the free version only has 5GB. Are you over that limit? If you remove one of the bigger files you just uploaded, you should be able to see the ones you uploaded previously.

HAHA.....MOVE!!! Thanks for the question. Try deleting them from the other side where you are synching them. For example, if you are deleting them online, delete them from your computer. If you are deleting them from your computer, try deleting them online. Or you could try copying them all to a new folder and seeing if the sync works. Just a few thoughts about where I would start.
Today i moved 4,6gb files to onedrive and it was the worst . The sync broke down every 10mb on the uploads and every 100mb on downloads .. this is the greatest pile of crap software i ever had to deal with. To get it work again i had to log off and on to my user account on the PC.

So sorry you are having issues. We have never seen that. or experienced file paths changing There are so many variables when troubleshooting.

You can sync multiple OneDrive accounts. I have a personal and two business accounts and they all sync fine on my Mac and PC

For 3 things, it says I don't have syncing permission and the last one says that I need to delete or rename personal vault.
Is that file necessary to be in the vault? If not, if you move it out, that may help.

They may have synched to your OneDrive and now get copied from there. Have you tried deleting them from OneDrive then synching?

One Plus no longer syncs my pictures to my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra even though I have it enabled to sync in the gallery.
Maybe try removing the phone and adding it again?
