Yes it's really great to see these places from the air. I've been to most, a rabid railfan, but most were years ago, way before drones and even cell phone and other video was common. So, it's all still photos and memories for me. The Upside was of course I had SP, Katy, Mop, IC Gilford etc. even once in a while the WP. So, a fair trade off.
The over/under meet is fantastic, you were lucky you could capture this rarity. Your patience definitely payed off. This area is really gorgeous. It's cool the river is between the two main lines. The colors are also very nice, lots of green around the water. The UP trains are nifty and we even see a pumpkin too. Amazing footage again Dan. Your uploads are always much appreciated.
Thank you Z! Yeah I can't tell you how happy I was that I just kept being patient. I would have regretted very badly if I missed that and found out that I did miss it. It is a gorgeous area indeed.
Dan, I don't know how you manage to put out such great videos every time, but I for one am grateful. Thank you. By the way, it's great that you get to railfan with your dad.
I’m glad you were able to “see” the over vs. under view of two trains. I too wondered at the slowest of the east bound , when you mentioned they may of lost an engine, it all made sense . Thank you for posting a view I’ll never see in person, we have trains in S. central Tx , (waiting to see Big Boy next week) but no cross overs that I can think of. Thanks Dan ❤️👍
Thanks so much I'm glad you enjoyed! We knew that Eastbound was on the way but were confused why it took so long to get to us which we found out later why. Hope you enjoy the Big Boy!
Stunning..... and Stunning. What else I can say? A rare sight. How can someone put in that much painstaking endeavours to brilliantly film such documentaries.
I know I’m showing my age, but I remember crossing Nevada and following the railroads through this area in days prior to Interstate 80. Thanks for the memories Dan.
Congrats on this catch Dan! I know how you felt it is always great to catch the things that you think you will never get hope you catch many more moments.
Great video, as always. Thank you. I've spent time in Nevada and know the UP in that area. Seeing how the 'over' train was struggling, if it ground to a complete standstill, that would be a long wait for assistance power to clear the line. It would seem like a good idea to keep a pool of older / lower power locos and add them to the power consist between SLC and Sparks (or even Roseville) but offline? That way the crews would have options if they lost a main unit - a 3000hp SD40 would have made a big difference for that crew on the 'over'.
That is a very good point but that's just too efficient and thought out for how they run things these days! Railroading isn't much of railroading anymore unfortunately...
The impossibly long trains, beautiful scenery and soothing music make your video's so enjoyable to watch. The over/under catch was pretty cool. I got to see another UP train that I didn't think I would. My daughter drove us to Rochelle, Il., I live in northern Il., and got to see the 4014 Big Boy up close and personal. What a special day that was.
Spending a couple hours waiting in the 100 degree heat, checking out all those millions of Mormon crickets crawling around everywhere ,was so surreal, and then to be rewarded with such an epic crossover catch, was one of the most epic experiences of our entire trip! That one will be a forever memory. Thanks again for the fun, son. Cheers!
Those crickets were just as memorable as catching the crossover itself! Really neat to spend the afternoon out there even in the heat. Definitely forever to be remembered. I can still picture it out there pretty clearly.
Congratulations, Dan, you were in the right place at the right time to catch that over/under two train action in Paradise Canyon. That was a magnificent catch. It is obvious from the scenery why this area is named Palisade Canyon. (Posted 21 September 2024 at 2248 CDT.)
WoW! Just WoW! You were out there and spent the time and YOU did it! I'd bet the feeling was a million times more exciting than the production. I'd be trying to film without reacting.🎉😂❤
Thanks so much! You're right it was extremely exciting in the moment. I can still remember the feeling pretty well. My mouth truly did drop wide open when I saw that second train. My dad was with me and immediately knew what was about to happen when he saw my face.
Dan, back in early November of 2018 you captured the only other "over-under" I've seen. It was in "the Columbia River Gorge at the Oregon Trunk Jct. where BNSF crosses the river on the Oregon Trunk line as well as crossing Union Pacific's Portland Subdivision on the Oregon side".
Actually, it looks like there are plenty of sites for an over-under, but I suppose you can't be at all of them at the same time. Excellent, as always, Dan.
Favorite footage? 6:15-6:36 cruising next to the train going in opposite direction. And I thought sure that you were going to fly through the through truss at 13:50! Some day, sigh!. Wonderful video Dan. So Exciting and scenic.🤗. . . . . 🚂Lawrence
Hahaha..Pretty foamy, indeed! That was close to not happening, but it still counts fair and square. Thanks for more material from Palisade Canyon. I'm just curious, in case I am able to go in the future, was it very buggy (mosquitos and flies) there in July? I've heard some accounts from settlers passing through there that the skeeters and flies can be intense in there. 🤠👍
Scotty you're not kidding! Extremely foamy ha! Fair and square indeed even by just a little. You know what it was odd we really didn't encounter flies or mosquitoes BUT there were a few giant wasps out there. I've never seen wasps so big and when they got to flying around you it was definitely a concern. We were also there during a massive mormon cricket migration so they were actually everywhere throughout Northern Nevada and all over here as well. Literally MILLIONS of giant crickets but they weren't really of any concern.
@@TheRailfanDan Oh right, I've seen the cricket migration on TV before...that is pretty nuts. Good news about the lack of mosquitos and flies. As long as we don't get Japanese Giant "Murder" Hornets here in the US, I guess I'll be ok with being near the wasps, but I will definitely respect them and give them their space. Better yet, maybe I'll just plan my trip at a cooler time of year and maybe not have to deal with any of them. Thanks for the answers and information. 🤠👍
@@espeescotty Yeah luckily no issues with the wasps but they had me on edge. Not a bad idea either to visit at a time of year with no bugs around! When I was there a year ago in September I also don't recall the bugs being much to speak of.
Marvelous skills shown flying the drone so smoothly, I didn’t know this part of 9:38 NV looks like it could be Eastern OR! In the train going over the 2nd engine was BNSF’s any idea how it showed up on UP’s train? Thanks
Yeah some of it is similar to parts of Oregon and Idaho. Oh I'm not sure on the BN unit but not super uncommon for foreign power to end up on other railroads.
YES,,, BUT it is really difficult to catch 2 trains running simultaneously,, I don't know how you obtain the train running schedule ??? or you just caught these 2 trains in coincident,,,, ????
Once again, stunning video filmed in a spectacular setting. The over under catch was great too.
Dan is always taking us places we can not see! Thanks Dan and Dad !

Thanks Bill!

Thanks very much Ken! Ha I don't know either! Just patience I guess. He and I both really enjoyed the time together.
Thank you for taking us on this journey. Once again, great work. I admire your drone skills.
Thanks so much!
You’re doing such an amazing job every time I watch one of your videos and the patience you have really paying off.
Well thanks a bunch you're too kind!
Now that’s something most people don’t get to catch often everyday. But, I tell you what. That was flat out amazing!
Thanks a lot!

Nicely done. You caught me and my truck in your 5723/MGRRV pacing sequence. I am on the hill just above the intermediate signal. Thanks for sharing.

Oh I bet they would but unfortunately have no plans to travel that far. Maybe someday years from now.
So apparently, not only do alot of UP locomotives look like crap, they also run like crap.
