The River Walk Expansion
Lined by bars, shops, restaurants, nature, public artwork, and the five historic missions
15 MILES
The Alamo- Free
The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 - March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, United States), killing all of the Texian defenders. Santa Anna's cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians-both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States-to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution.
Restrooms
Grassy area in the back great for kids to play and cool off
Mission San José
Known as the "Queen of the Missions", this is the largest of the missions
Take a ranger-led tour of Mission San Jose at 10:00, 11:00, 2:00 and 3:00 any day of the week!
Camanche Lookout Park
Comanche Lookout Park is a 96-acre public park owned by the City of San Antonio.
Nice park! Great paved walkways with miles of trails. Lots of playgrounds for kids and pokestops (if you're into that sort of thing).
Great for running, biking, or just walking into nature. Full of lush trees and landscaping that is well kept up.
Market Square
Great place to buy souvenirs
Historic Market Square thrives today on a plaza that was gifted to the original settlers “for their use and entertainment” by the King of Spain in 1730.
San Antonio resident here. Thank you for the kind words of our city!
You're welcome. You live in a pretty wonderful city. This video didnt even mention all the fun people we were able to get to know on our adventure. They were the best part
go spurs go
Coming to your city soon! I'm excited, it looks beautiful!
The Japanese garden and Denman Estate Korean park are free and absolutely wonderful.
Your voice has kindness, thank you for sharing.
Terri Cruz thank you so much for your kind words.
It’s a beautiful city 🌃 especially in live events in downtown
Thank you for sharing! This is Amazing!
Thank you so much for your kind words!! And thank you for watching
I love the narration throughout the video. Some humorous quips, nice camera work, and incredibly informative! My favorite part was baby hanging out with a wet towel on his head. Haha!
Haha, I probably should have explained that part. It was hot and he wasn't feeling well, we figured that was a good way to get him to cool off in the restaurant.
I thought that was cute too haha
thanks for this video. heading there in 2 weeks, looking forward to it.
Oh have an amazing time! Thank you for watching
Wow, looks like I'll need to make my way over to San Antonio .. and yes, I do remember the Alamo (learned about it in my history class, and always thought it would be really cool to check it out in person). How old is your youngest? We're expecting our second one in a few weeks! Thank you for sharing those tips, keep em coming!
Our youngest is 6 months... I mean 7 months old. Man they grow up fast. Congratulations on your new one on the way Denny. The first few months are challenging but after that nothing gives a parent greater joy than seeing both your kids just make each other laugh. Your son will be a great big brother.
New subscriber! I love San Antonio! We just went to visit the temple!
We had so much fun visiting Alamo and river walk. Lovely vid.
Love from
Mumbai, India
Glad you loved the city as much as we did! Happy Travels
So you didn;t find it crowded...I travelled to Bombay many times in my youth.
Carolanne Titmus I can't find any place more crowded than Mumbai maybe some big City in China yes :)
Which year you were last in Mumbai( Bombay) ?
I lived in Bombay and have visited Mumbai since..forgive me for always reverting to Bombay as I have such wonderful memories of my time spent there.
Excellent video! I'm considering going & this was very helpful
Chrissy P oh you should it's a wonderful place. But wait until fall. It's hot there right now
Love
The Four Little Bears thank you
We have so much fun in San antonio just this April from 18 to 26 of 2019. We been to riverwalk, Ripley's, zoo, seaword, six flag and other places. Thank you for sharing your video it brings us memory so much.
Banyan I am so glad you enjoyed San Antonio as much as we did!
As a South Texas native, our summers are no joke. But the pearl district is my favorite thing to do! And don't forget animal world for a fun paid adventure, it's way better than Brackenridge.
That river walk looks like it would be pretty awesome!
It was pretty amazing.
It is the atmosphere and the music makes it very unique as a friend once said it was the only place he ever saw where people were still sitting until early in the morning at the bars and cafes with no sign of conflict or bad behaviour.
Go at Christmas time. All the trees along the river are lit up with Christmas lights.
Yea,you can bike down the river for miles.
I am surprised that you didn't mention the wonderful museums that are free on Tuesdays from 4pm to 9pm.
Hey Su,
That is wonderful to know but admittedly I try not to include places that have a very limited free window. If a place is free most of the week I will include it. I have just found it very hard to plan trips around certain free times when they are only one day a week.
Thank you for your comment though and for watching
Which ones are open? I will be there on a tuesday!
Vacationing there next weekend. from Louisiana.... looking forward too the trip...🙌🙌🙌
You are going to love it. It's a great city
San Antonio and New Orleans two of the few places you can walk and sightsee. The river boats are not so expensive and well worth it...the tour buses are excellent...you can get on and off at will. A British Tourist!!!
I live a few miles from the Alamo. This video is helpful especially because I just moved here.
I hope you love it in San Antonio! We love that area.
I’m visiting in few months yay
You are going to love it! Good call going in the cooler season
So much fun, never had much interest in San Antonio and fell in love with it. Also, not as hot as she was making it out to be😉
haha, it was hot. It was still doable but almost not doable. Love you babe!
Are you serious...we thought we would melt. Loved all the same.
Fabulous I agree but it can be very hot and humid...It is Texas after all.
Jacob Bracken Yes Las Vegas, Phoenix, Miami, New Orleans felt hotter to me.
I'm sure it's not lol SHe's from Utah, I'm from Florida so I'm sure I'd be fine
It's just so hot in San Antonio (yes I live there) 110-120 degree summers.. droughts.. but it rains normally. If you want to go, bring sun screen, or go In the winter or fall
I would agree sunscreen is a must! We had to buy some while there. Great advice
My wife and I plan on visiting San Antonio this summer. I liked your video. We visited another city with a nice riverwalk two years ago.....Tampa, Florida. I highly recommend it.
Hey Paul,
Admittedly the only part of Florida I have explored is Key West. I would love to go see Tampa.
My husband and I are doing our budgeting trip planning meeting this week and I will bring Tampa to the table of places we should explore.
Thank you for the suggestion
@@TravelingOnaShoestring A lot to do in Tampa, besides the Riverwalk. They have a nice aquarium at the end of the Riverwalk, plus you can rent a boat and ride on the river. We also went to St. Petersburg to catch a Rays game.
Good video
Thank you Young Hernandez
Welcome
I love this wonderful video! Should we rent a car or are all the places you talked about close enough to walk or affordably uber?
I would rent a car if I were in your shoes. A lot of these places are pretty spread out
Fun fact Comanche park that building want always blocked off and my dad would tell me about when he wad I high school he would go drinking with his friends there, also a pretty decent hike if you're in the mood
That's hilarious he would go drinking there in high school. Thanks for the backstory of the area
@@TravelingOnaShoestring also a little outside of San Antonio is an art museum the mcnay in shertz or converse is a free place to go and lots of cool art to see
Thank you for liking my home city San Antonio is so awesome and with the basketball team go spurs go
Super Xl it's an easy city to love. Honestly my husband wants us to move there now. It's in our 5 year plan. Amazing place
Check out the meaning/ history of Spurs he was a brave young soldier from the North East of England...His name was Hotspur! He knew no fear. Tottenham Hotspurs a London football team...playing ball with your feet..lol!
Do you know the origin of Spurs? Hotspur was a very brave young soldier who never showed fear. In the North East of England.. Go Spurs.
i live 150 miles west of San Antonio!
That is awesome. I hope you get to play tourist there soon
I'm traveling a really long distance to go to the Alamo and the Riverwalk.
One random potato, are you coming from Idaho?
@@TravelingOnaShoestring Can't say, but all i can say is it's quite far 😂
I am going in the summer because that's when my schedule will allow. After three tours to Iraq, I'm sure San Antonio is paradise.
Yes, it sounds like your body would be much more well adjusted to the eat then ours. I have heard crazy things about summers in Iraq
@@TravelingOnaShoestring FWIW, Southern California has a similar climate to SA. It just gets cooler when the sun goes down because we don't have the Gulf of Mexico nearby which makes the nighttime warmer than comfortable for people from places with actual seasons like Utah. Yes, the Persian Gulf in the summer is no joke.
@@TravelingOnaShoestring Also, I'm a teacher, therefore, the summer is only time I get to travel.
Enjoyable and informative video. Thank you for sharing. 👍
Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it! 🗺🗺🗺
I'm going to san antonio today in the night
Elvira Gutierrez ohhh.. I can't say I did much in San Antonia at night due to having young children. What did you end up doing?
A good place to go in San Antonio is the Japanese tea garden
You know a few people have mentioned that. It sounds like a great place to visit
Thanks for your video! What hotel do you recommend to stay to get around easily?
Hello Kelly,
Thank you for your kind words. I couldn't tell you about a good hotel. We like to travel on a budget which means we either 1. Stay with family 2. Use airbnb or 3. Camp.
We only do hotels of there is no other solution since they tend to be pricier
Traveling On a Shoestring thanks!
Kelly Huynh
There is one at the corners of Houston and Broadway streets
Real close to the Alamo , and the river walk. safe area !!
Thanks a lots!
Kelly Huynh
Tawne suites by Marriott,
409 E .Houston St. 78205!!
K go to Camacho alot
Will have to do that
You did not take your kids to the Doseum?..sorry for your kids they would have had a great time!
Hey AQ, what is the Doseum?
@@TravelingOnaShoestring The Doseum is a great children's museum in SA. It is not free, but the season passes are cheap. I literally take my 3 year old son there once a week. Also we have season passes to the San Antonio zoo, which is wonderful! It is within walking distance to a free japanese garden which has a beautiful waterfall.
Pause at 0:16 my big brother use to work at that Bill millers .Plus my old house was around there too
knuckles Knows da way that's awesome. It's a pretty area
Im sorry to say. San Antonio is probably. One the most boring. Places I've ever been too. Super slow. I never knew it was. So getto.. The people are nice. But a lot people there. Have no class.
Do not go to San Antonio as we went there, and ever since we've been getting phone calls asking for donations from various organizations including 1 from the state police.
Frances Elaine Thurston how did they get your number?
They can’t get your number stop making up excuses I’m from San Antonio and here right now it’s so beautiful and if you don’t like it then bye don’t come back to this video Sa is so beautiful and with a awesome basketball team go spurs go
I am British and have had many wonderful times in San Antonio and have never received these calls. My friend and I got lost driving just outside San Antonio we pulled up at a gas station looking very confused. A policeman who was getting a cold drink asked what our problem was and said " follow me" We thought he would direct us to Downton..he took us to the entrance of our hotel and then just waved us goodbye from his open window....Where in THE WORLD would that happen. Flown all around the world many times as a flight attendant with British Overseas Airways. I wish his Police chief could commend him Spring 2016. but we did not know his name and # Well done San Antonio...Clean Friendly and great food. Will be back!
Please don't make lies story God will punished you. God bless you son
I was born in San Antonio but I left due to much violence and how ghetto the city has become. I have also lived Los Angeles, Phoenix, portland,or and Seattle and all these city's are much better then San Antonio tx, 365 days of the year. The only good thing about San Antonio tx is the tex Mex food which is second to non!!
Don't know where you lived but San Antonio TX is not ghetto. Much cleaner and prettier than los Angeles CA. I've lived here 28 yrs and loved every minute of it.
You from the west side?
Axl H. San Antonio’s west side has nothing on The hoods in La
I think he is trolling. Portland, Seattle, and LA are all cities collapsing. I would never leave SA.
