OMG! I remember seeing this tower elevators and motor room in a how it works elevators video from the 80’s! That is crazy that you got to see it!

Oh yeah Beno these used to have old Express DC gearless machines!

When I was a young teenager back in the late 80s, I had an obsession with how lifts worked (spurred on by “The secret life of machines” series by Tim Hunkin and Rex Garrod on Channel 4)
I rang the tower and asked if we could have a tour *back when it was operational SOLEY BY EXPRESS* - it was superb fun. The lifts went SOOOOO fast. When we got to the very top we were looking up at the ceiling where all the paint was peeling off; we were told it was a quick coat for the Queen’s visit. 😂

Graham Brothers used to have a test tower in their facilities in Sundbyberg... It was even used by Asea-Graham after the merge. Sadly the whole factory grounds including the test tower are now gone. :(

Wow! You can see both my house and my workplace from the top! Really cool that you got to see this.
It's also cool that you got to go on that lift in the town centre - I've been eyeing that one up since I got interested in them, I thought it was in real danger of being ripped out.

good to see that it's been preserved & grade 2 listed & still in use even though with generic operators, they often do charity abseils down it too,

I think LiftTech in Australia uses ILE logics in all of their lifts as they mostly install higher end heavy duty lifts and escalators on public transport networks in Australia as they have a contract with the government to do that and to maintain almost all of the lifts in Australia’s public transport network! So the lifts that are installed in Australia’s public transportation networks are actually really good for generic lifts which makes a lot of sense as for public transport systems they need to be extremely heavy duty and vandalism resistant which is also for the purpose of ensuring reliability and reducing maintenance costs as much as possible without violating any safety codes/laws which are already extremely strict in Australia! :)

Hi Beno, cool video on the defunct British lift industry.
The Express tower was the peak of it, so glad it was saved.
Can I ask why you love ILE so much?
I’ve worked in the lift trade since the 80’s and have a different opinion 😂.

No security; Hooray! This tower is incredible, especially the windows that have some Express Lift buttons I agree that's a nice touch, but one thing I don't like about it are owls being everywhere. 13:55 I also like how original this lift is also on top of it (15:04). And this is the second time we saw toilets in random places... (11:14). Great video as always Ben! 🤦🏾‍♂️

I am not sure about the medium speed lift. The high speed and service lifts have new motors. The slow speed lift has new motor attached to original gearbox.

Did you share any of your opinions with your tour guide?
Also did you ask if you could surf the lifts? (I'm guessing your request would have gotten rejected)

I did ask to surf the lift but he couldn't let me. I am not sure how much he knew about me when he showed me around. We mainly talked about the history of the building.
