i'd almost given up hope but then IT OPENED UP! YESSSSSSSSSS!
First
50th like!!
At least they installed a nice KONE instead of a cheap generic lift.
This is a gorgeous lift! Even including the walls, that just adds to the time capsule vibe. Definitely looking forward to the next video!
(The curvature of the video does give me a bit of a headache though, just wanted to point that out. :))
Great video and great find! Looking forward to part 2
thewildeeper You should team up with mrmattandmrchay
And film old lifts
Wow, that was a suprise! You really wouldn’t have expected it to still work with a new ecodisc besides it and the unresponsive buttons. But there’s still some life left in that lift. It’s got a cosy interiour too. I have never see an Otis lift with blackbuttons in such a slim-line door frame design. I wonder how similair it is “under the hood” to the Flohr-Otis “Pira/Pilo” model lifts with swing doors from the late 60’s / early 70’s that where quite common in germany and the netherlands. Those lifts had some interresting door designs that are quite unique in their styling. Sadly there are not many of them around anymore and I’ve last been in one in 2004 when my grandfather was still alive in an elderly home.
2:53 you can see the bulb for 5 slightly light up.
PotatoLift1 same
Yup
What a really nice find! I didn't think anything would still be around so original!
I love the wall carpet.
Can't wait for part 2 ! For the drag race, on one side we have an old Otis lift and on the other, a brand new Kone. The Kone has "intelligent leveling", where the lift brakes smoothly in one clean shot to be perfectly lined up with the floor, and the Otis has "classic leveling", where the doors open during the leveling period, and both appear to go at the same speed. But the Otis might win for its instant start and early doors opening.
3:40 I really like that indicator its really cool how it looks like its built into the door frame
Thanks for blurring out (almost) all the identifying information and giving me such an intriguing puzzle to solve. It took me a while but I did manage to identify the location in the end!
Id be interested to see what I missed and how you found it. Pls let me know. I don't plan to blur it any further, but I do like to protect the places that I've found :) Did you go there? Wondering if it's still there?
@@mrmattandmrchay Did you get the reply I posted? it seems to have disappeared.
No, it's not appeared. Maybe you posted a link or something and youtube rejected it.
OK, this is the most exited I have ever been for a mrmattandmrchay video.
wow, cool! I just hope part 2 is not an 'anti-climax''
This is an epic lift. I wish there were epic lifts like this where I live
I don't understand why everything in the age of HD has theese crap 16-bit blares on it when even the old ones made such a lovely harmonic ding. It's not only the lifts, also rail crossings and Things. The real bells decades ago sounded so much more high quality. Ok, it usually was...
I think the buttons on the ground floor worked, you just didn’t wait long enough. Amazing old Otis! Great vid!
yep, there were people using it :)
How do you get the good sound quality with your newer GoPro? I also have a GoPro 7 but the sound is awful
Also, what editing software do you use? Could I run it on a Mac?
Wonder if you could start a UK Lift Preservation Society, preserving historical lifts and get funding for that. 🤔
Those AC-DC mechanical generator and rectifier sets are called "Leonardsatz" in Germany
Reminds me of my first time riding in a relay controlled lift I was rather Erie experience nothing but silence and the occasional creak But old lifts don’t bother me anymore more in fact I prefer them especially when you consider that I got stuck in a modernised stannah for over an hour ! Like lifts but I’m not sure they like me
Can't wait for Part 2!!!
I have only seen 1 Otis Black Button in my country. That type of Kone (KSS 570) is also rare. Instead we get horrible cheaper KDS buttons.
This Ots equipment was/is known as 'standard Housing' as it was installed in many blocks of flats, sometimes as a 'Skip Floor' installation each lift serving alternate floors one for odd floors and one for evens floors. Much of the equipment it was prefabricated aluminium alloy entrance and arrived on site pre assembled frames very basic.
Hurry up and post part 2! I can't wait any longer! :)
10-15 minutes and it'll be up! How's that for a speedy mrmattandmrchay service? ;)
You'll needs patience, let him alone way to it is.
Great lift. Looking forward to seeing the next video.
Wow, that's cool these elevators.... How incredible to find is! ^_^
Luck rather than judgement!
1:57 I would imagine the lift saying "SIKE!!! I'M HAPPY TO SEE YOU!!! 😁❤️"
With the new one there its days are likely numbered. Of course, if you fix it up, you may give it a new lease on life!
his fixes are very nice.
Even still it would have been ripped out in a few years anyways.
I've always pronounced Kone "Cone". Learn something new every day!
I've been in an elevator with the ionic '80s Schindler chime
Really nicely edited and put together too Matt, great work here :D
This OTIS is sooo beautiful...
Very lucky to get a look at the motor room
The good old 1970s quality! Try this with chinese lifts in 40 years!
It has unique character! Great video!
That generator sound! I've heard that in elevators before! I just assumed it was the main motor or some nonsense.
When will you end the final broadmoor siren tour with siren M? Ascot skate park
Love these old things. The oldest elevator that I have been on here in the states was modernized in the late 1940’s or early 50’s to have those pop out buttons but it was still a gated elevator from 1910.
One thing I appreciate about these old lifts is they're fast. They never hang around, soon as you push a button the motor whirs up and it's on it's way, then when you're in the lift as soon as you push the button for your floor it's off. You can see how fast it went from floor 6 to zero in this video. I don't know why, but a lot of modern lifts seem to have a long pause between the button press and doing anything, and they're not usually so fast moving either
yes, no waiting around. Doors close, completes a circuit, activates a relay and it's moving! Nowadays, software - doors close, software checks this, checks that, start increasing motor speed via the VFD drive, etc.
@@mrmattandmrchayYeah. I’ve ridden a gated Otis from 1951 (in the US), and as soon as you press the button the gate slams shut, the lift starts up, and being a two-speed lift, levels very quickly in stages.
Excellent video and what a great find! Hope you manage to get access to the motor room...
I even bet back in the 70s when that was installed it was meant to look futuristic because alot of them back in the day had a classic wood look to them
Vintage British Otis is very cool.
A Really Awesome blend between an Awesome Original Otis lift and an Awesome Kone Ecodisc!
I wouldn't have been at all surprised if that lift opened up onto The Overlook Hotel ballroom!
I remember that many of these cycled the motor generator set off if the car wasn't move for a set period of time. Late at night or on weekends there was a delay when the car was called so the motor generator set could come to speed.
next vid here in a couple days? and if so or later i of course will love the video as i always do matt thanks for delivering such good elevator content
How come at this place there is still have this vintage otis lift left in place? But it is a good thing to see these old lifts!
Well you got there just in time because this awsome piece of mass engineering is probably long gone now
The cab actually looks to be in really good shape apart from the paint on the ceiling peeling off
I have seen old Otis black button when I visited Canada, unfortunately when I ride up some of the call button lights didn’t work
Excellent lift. I would go for the old Otis lift any day. Despite being in a bit of a poor state, its still a class lift. Million times better than most (if not all) modern day lifts.
the floor of the building matches the elevator interior. the floor interior: 0:00
elevator interior 2:32 2:37
That Ecodisc has KONE's new voice installed, which means it can only been around 1-2 years old at most.
the new design for the capacity as well, so it's 2016 or newer i think
7:39 They're expecting the passengers to be rather slim, 540 kg / 8 persons is only 67.5 kg per passenger. All elevators I've seen (mostly in Germany) assume an average passenger weight of 75 kg. Is that difference because of old vs. new or is it UK vs DE?
Quite rare for the generators to switch on and off instead of running 24/7
Nice video are the floor indicator lamps neon bulbs? Some of them a a slight flickers glow like if it had an old tired neon bulb in it
where are these lifts located?
i came across a motor room like this but sadly it did not work but this is so cool to see one working i love older lift stuff than the moderen crap
I bet it's been modernised by now though!
@@mrmattandmrchay be a shame if thay have :/
One of the nicest looking lifts ive seen in a video for a while! Carpet walls that match the floor ones. Amazing! I guess in the next part where you fix it up it was your own idea or hired todo so?
Nice elevators place here these... Excellent to find!
This is a cool old lift.
Unfortunately, it's bound to get either modernised, torn out, or permanently decommissioned.
If I had to modify this lift, I'd do the first option, modernise. I would keep the old fixtures, but switch the really inefficient halogen and incandescent bulbs for much more efficient LEDs. Then, I'd repaint the lift's car so it doesn't look like it's falling apart anymore. I'd oil the tracks to eliminate the scary sounds and I would leave it at that, maybe replacing the doors.
I love the scary sounds, adds to the personality! :) The carpets on the walls is very 70s, but really, paint get scratched and needs touching up, but a carpet - wears for much longer!
0:40 you can see V key hole :)
I like the KONE more
Very well done.
Can't wait for second half
Is any DC generator in the motorroom of the express DMR? I feel it is a verbal speed ac motor.
Yes...the generators in the DMR video are the 'pods' which are mounted vertically that I show you in this video briefly
Lol at the carpet on the walls 🧱
And also like all old ones they did add a very annoying beep when the doors are open and someone is going through
Is there a second part to this video? Eagerly awaiting the motor room with DC generator!
There is one more part, which "at this time" does not include the motor room.
Does the KONE lift landing indicator really do that? or is it the camera?
The wierd thing is the door open button was at the top of the floor buttons instead of the bottom
Wow I don't know how I thud video appeared to me but my Nan has a Otis lift in here care home. The door opens just before the lift has actually got to thr floor you want! It's funny.
Now that's what I call an old vs new. Also love the vintage black call buttons are on the lift door frames along with the lamps. Look forward for part 2!
I'll bet I know why you were scared of these. Up until 1974 many of these here in USA had removable side panels which opened to the shaft, they were made to be "rescue elevators" where they could use manual controls to get alongside a disabled car, extend a ramp (brought along from the office) and open the other side panels so basically stuck occupants could walk to the other car. The ramp had pop up rails and it worked usually however, many times people got hurt so it was fire department only for 2 years and then it was forbidden I'm not sure what happened but someone must have been killed. The empire state building elevators were designed this way too but after the bomber flew into it they made changes rendering car to car impossible. If you were a kid and saw into the shaft through the side or the window some of these had you'd be terrified. I was scared of freight elevators because I saw someone kidnapped from a sideways view, it was arms grabbing someone from where the elevator was, then screams as it went to a lower floor.. I thought freight elevators had monsters in them until age of 6... is it the shift view or the shift window view, even today looking into the Washington monument shift from the observation deck stairs still scares me and it's inside a cage..
This would have a copper plate floor selector as it’s DC
Even though I do like kone its such ashame that its not as reliable as the old otis ones were and this is why many people say that older ones are actually better because they work really well
That is one epic lift. At least the new lift is a KONE and not a Gen2 or even worse... A generic!
They should’ve had them both running on the same controller like the old and new ones in selfridges in Manchester while one was modded but the other one hadn’t yet
I’d defently ride this otis but then again the ecodisc is tempting
You gotta appreciate the unmodernised lifts. They're a thing of beauty, really.
Hey there Zach, we have some matching names.
Is that as cool as this lift?
Its days are numbered, just like the old Pifre-Otis scissor-gated (!!!) elevator in Brest that someone filmed.
There a otis lift like this in house of fraser in Cardiff
which house of Fraser?
@@Paul-mv1sj House of Fraser In Cardiff Wales
Loves this old elevator... You know guess looks like is? Is looks like Bennie lift this doors. How could be work fixtures the lights out to it this elevator going on?
Have they allowed you to fix the bulbs ? 💡
They didn't, we simply moved the light bulb panel and it worked. In a way, we fixed it by accident! :)
Can you disclose the info of where this is, please? Even if you have to tell me in a private message or email. I really want to see my first old Otis lift!
I hope its still there 😐
PART 2
ruclips.net/video/MWxYaizMCCs/видео.html
Why use an AC motor to drive a DC motor as a generator and not just rectify and smooth with capacitors the 3ph mains to high voltage DC? Wouldn't that more power efficient and cheaper than a big 3ph AC motor driving a big DC generator? High voltage, high current bridge rectifiers (even 3ph ones) are not very expensive.
I am guessing because inexpensive high current rectifiers had not been invented when this lift was built? A rectifier would of probably been a vacuum tube in those days... I dont think smooth control of AC motors was possible until the invention of VFD drive which was literally many decades after this lift would of been built.
You're talking about a different era. Semiconductors were very expensive when this lift was installed. The whole lift controls are done via relay logic and mechanical floor selectors. This lift is from the 70s and is based on proven technology of the time. (This type of logic was installed throughout the 60s and 70s and right up until the mid 80s). Also the output voltage may not be the same as the three phase supply. An advantage of using a DC generator is that you only need one component in the traction system to be at the local voltage. The DC generator can be the same as one used throughout the world with only the AC motor being local to the country. And yes nowadays that can be done through DC-DC conversion, but again that is from an era that dates from after this lift.
Ok. Ive watched his other videos on lift relay logic. I didn't realise this particular lift was that old. solid state devices (not necessarily silicon) certainly did exist back then though. I look forward to part 2.
Semiconductors were very expensive but have you ever heard about Mercury Arc Rectifiers ?
Yes, i know of mercury arc rectifiers. i remember watching a video a few years ago by photonicinduction where he powered up a mercury arc rectifier. They glowed blue when energised.
The Otis Lift has no lights and chimes
What’s the brand of that Kone lift?
Wow! I love this classic elevator, but one question with whom you
had done the drag race??
I give this person a mention in part 2 :)
@@mrmattandmrchay Where is part two?
Is that OTIS still there?
It should have a Full bridge rectifier
I wonder how the owner of the building dared to replace the 1st lift.
Bicycle "Bottle" Dynamos actually generate AC.
1:10 The give away!!! Of course it's working!!!
Well spotted man!
@@dngunder Thanks!!!
Does it still exist and work
O2 said ouch
Is it part 1
You know this lift are made from???
Is the building abandoned?
Nope, it's a working building. I do wonder if this is still there or not, was a while ago now. I'm guessing it's been modernised.
@@mrmattandmrchay Are you still going to go this building to see the elevator ?
Where?
