- In 2010, a film adaptation of a beloved children's novel series came out that was so bad that even the author lets you know he hates it... Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Before the new Disney adaptation is released, let's revisit the original two Percy Jackson movies through some funny scathing reviews!
All reviews are from the site Letterboxd. Some have been edited for length.

Oh gods I hate these movies. Not only are they not book accurate, they wouldn’t even be good movies without the books.
I remember that the video “in defense of the Percy Jackson movies” said that they’d be adequate if taken in isolation. not even good, just adequate
@@runeanonymous9760I agree that the first one is adequate in isolation.
The second one tried to course correct while at the same time veering even farther off course. Doing either one of those is bad by itself, but together they make it even worse.
Not only is it an insult to the books, but also to the myths 😂
@@happyhapp6 True
I watched the first movie before reading the books. It's the kind of movie you could watch if there was literally nothing else. But even back then i knew it wasn't good.
I do suppose i'm kind of thankful for it's existence. Without them i wouldn't have felt curious about the musical once i found out there was one, which was actually so good it made me read the books.
I actually watched the movies first, and then I read the books, and I was so disappointed when Luke didn't tell Percy to "Stop walking on my roof."
Probably one of the few highlights of those things, tbh
Honestly the only good part of both movies combined
@@shroomius6094 Dont forget the "This is a pen" bit
Not to mention “I use to date your daddy.”
It is a fun line
Percy and Annabeth in the books were THE bi 4 bi badass autistic couple. In the movies, they had about as much chemistry as Zeus and Hera.
bi 4 bi badass autistic couple… never could’ve said it better
Ouch.
Let me go get some aloe for that epic burn.
:0
damn good one
Love how they just forgot about Clairisse in the first movie, shoved her into the second and completely butchered her entire character. Now thats how to do an adaptation
And they choose a hot, skinny girl. Because we can't have muscler women, that's ugly. No one wants to see that.
DC and marvel get away with this all the time
Clarisse deserved it
@akiraevangelionultimateali5199 at least with DC and MARVEL there are multiple stories and writers, so it's not that terrible versus book adaptations
@@cameronweaver2013 there are some stories you could be very faithful to.
Does it not bug anyone that Persephone was in the underworld DURING SUMMER LIKE WHAT???
Nope. You have a parent who had to stop their vacation/checking in on an infirm family member to stop another parent from lighting themselves on fire? That's what that was.
Well seeing how much of a train wreck the whole film was I can’t blame them for forgetting yet another popular Greek myth
It’s one of my biggest complaints about this movie.
EXACTLY

As one RUclipsr put it: "If you've ever been attacked by a Canadian Goose or been to a Percy Jackson premiere, chances are that you've had to make an escape at some point in your life." - BlueJay, 2020
As a Canadian I would just like to say that comparison is unfair.
To the movies, they may be awful, but those geese will mess you up, they are not to be trifled with.
What video was that from?
@@PaintSplashProductions History's great escapes.
I am so glad they didn't get their grubby money-hungry claws on Nico di Angelo
At least one of my favorite characters from the first series didn't get obliterated by corperate greed
Don't worry. The Disney series will be doing it.
@@IceQueen975 ;V;
@@IceQueen975the show looks actually salvagable
The movies just turn Nico into this German tsundere edgy boy who unironically would have "Because tonoight will be the noight that I will fall for YUOOOU" playing on loop as his character theme.
@@IceQueen975the show has rick on board jesus
5:33 I didn't realize that last time I watched it but I find it so awful, Annabeth is the least "damsel in distress" character in pjo i can think of, I remember her still walking and fighting with the pain of literally having a broken ankle in the mark of Athena, Annabeth's portrayal is one of my least favorite things in the movies
Exactly they only why I would believe Annabeth would behave like a damsel in distress all the time would be if they were to only fight spider but that is not the case. In addition to that they are not even consistent with there own movies like the first movie she is kinda like Clarisse and everything and the second they were like oh now we do have Clarisse so what do we do.
Girlboss and her bf literally fell into hell and fought their way out
Agreed. Yes, there were plenty of times in the books where Annabeth needed to be saved by Percy, but there were also a lot of times where she saved him. That's what made them so good: They both saved each other and felt important to the quests.
Just finished reading Lightning Thief. Can't wait to find out how bad these movies butchered it.
Wait till you finish book 5 to watch the second movie
@@Dolphin2048 this is good advice!
Yes but you might want to wait with the second “movie” until you’ve read the fifth book cause they spoil some things.
They’re great to watch while sick! The first time I watched the first movie I was sick and I got so pissed off by what they did that I forgot that I was sick.
Spare yourself four hours and don’t watch them. Watch the new tv show instead
THE DIRECTOR FOR THIS MOVIE MADE HOTEL FOR DOGS!?!? Man it feels weird knowing the guy who made my childhood butchered a bunch of other people's childhoods 😅😅😅
And he made the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie too...blasphemous.
We’re there any book adaptations this guy didn’t butcher?
On the one hand, gold. On the other hand, painful, agonizing failure.
@caltheuntitled8021 the whimpy kid adaptations are the greatest movies ever made and you can't convince me otherwise(there is no forth one)
It's like finding out the guy who offered to pay for your lunch was a serial killer.
How could Fox butcher the Greek mythology-inspired book series with a cool premise and only two movies? Executives, rewrites, and writers completely unaware of the source material- and bad CGl.
One of my thoughts that I heard from another RUclipsr is that they based the movie off of cliches instead of sticking to the old, original writing and ideas. For example: making Hades the villain, denying Percy from the quest in the first place for the sneaking-out cliche, etc.
Not the Perry Johnson movies😭

@@peculiarstitches I don’t think it’s that bad and in fact, if you look at it on its own, it’s still good though. And it’s for sure better than the Disney+ series.
I remember watching one of the movies in class and my teacher looked like the guy who played Poseidon, so for about 2-3 weeks the kids would call him Poseidon instead of his actual name.
They legit forget to even introduce Kronos in the first film while cutting Ares being in kahoots with Luke entirely for no reason. Plus why the hell is Persephone in the underworld in mid June!?
I told a friend I watched Percy Jackson and the lighting thief and he asked me if I have also read the books, I asked him 'wait, there are books too?' I think I never deserved a gut punch more in all my life
Omg the Potato Janitor movies were _awful_

That's a new one. I like it.

Man, Rick should hire you to come up with Mr. D’s nicknames for people.

Me and a friend once watched the sea of monsters movie with a bell and every time something was inaccurate to the book we would ring the bell, we barely got past the start when his parents asked us to stop so we won't get a noise complaint
My sixth grade english class read The Lightning Thief and then watched the movie afterwards and we had to write about which we preferred. I picked the movie and said I liked it more because, among other reasons I no longer remember, it "gave the characters a reason to fight the monsters".
I _still_ hate myself for that.
How many others said the film was better? Do I have permission to hunt them down?
@@Amatureb Even if I _did_ condone that course of action, I don't think I saw a single other person's assignment.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend your right to say it to the death
A whole video on nonexistent movies, impressive!
5:34 I did not bother giving the 2nd movie the time of day and this makes me feel justified
Annabeth was the GOAT and I'm fairly certain every female character I've ever written was either based on or subconsciously inspired by her
How are they reviewing movies that don't exist? Weird. Must be a trick of the Mist.
We had to watch the movie in fifth grade. I remember being really excited to see the scene from the book with the three animals, only to be pissed when they adapted it out.
The scene with the zebra where Percy realizes he can talk to horses?
As someone who watched the movies prior to reading the first book I remember being immensely upset when I got to the part with Ares like?? You're telling me they didn't put this scene in the movie?? For what?? What could you fools possibly hope to gain by removing this fabulous specimen?? You clowns.
Also the reveal scene of Poseidon being his father. It was so cool in the book. Why'd they have to go and ruin it? Bastards.
Ugggh.
Thing is, these are good movies ON THEIR OWN. If you've never read the books, then this is at least a decent and entertaining movie. Read the books and it becomes from a whole other planet. I know, because I watched it before & after as a kid.
I counted. There are a grand total of *TWO LINES* from the ENTIRE BOOK in the first movie. H O W.
Edit: I never even watched the second film after reading the books lol
The second one is worse. They try to retcon stuff from the book back in, but then also mess up a whole bunch of other, even more plot important stuff.
I remember first watching the first movie in theaters, and kind of enjoying it because I just didn't know better. I think my little brother said he found it disappointing, and that motivated me to read the book for summer reading. It was a completely different experience, in a good way.
The movies were actually fairly decent as stand alone movies, but they are single-handedly some of the poorest book to movie adaptations on the planet. They literally cut out everything that made the books unique and special from just about every other Greek mythology movie or just any mythology for that matter and just replaced it all with stupid cliches and made it feel like a cliche action movie. I’m just surprised they didn’t have it set in actual Ancient Greece either because at this point just remove everything that made the books special and Rick Riordan himself said he warned them about the major issues while reading the script yet they ignored him like I’m pretty sure *ignoring the literal author of the source material at hand* is a great idea, and he refuses to even look at any of them for how much they’ve ruined his hard work, how much they’ve hurt his feelings, just how much of a waste of time it would be knowing it’s literally spitting on his hard work which I can’t blame.
@@ghost19101Completely agree, there was a movie around last year that was an adaptation of the School for Good and Evil books, the author had complete control, they were faithful to the books and it became number 1 on Netflix. It really shows the difference between listening and not listening to the author.
Seeing the movie made me read the book so I do think it was entertaining on its own.
However I don't think it was a good movie. The entire quest of the movie is : finding three magic pearls to get out of Hell when we'll go there to rescue a fourth person. And no one thought : hey, that means we need four pearls? When I realized that it ruined the consistance of the movie for me.
Peter Johnson and the Thunder Burglar and the sequel, Peter Johnson and the Ocean of Beasts
When I watched the movie, I was horrified, while my mom who hadn’t read the books at that time was like “Ooh that’s cool!”
If they had made a movie 3 I wouldn’t have been surprised if they had made
Nico a happy child of Demeter
All happy and daises
😆
When I read that my brain imagined Nico wearing a flower crown looking super grumpy and adorable, 😂 lol
@@artsydragonlady7342 I can’t get that image out of my head now 😂😂😂
this duology was a hate crime, but I gotta agree with the last review... I also want it to continue JUST to see how bad can they fuck up when Percy beat chronos already, like what will be the epic battle? Will they put Ares in because they forgot him in the first one?
Nico and Bianca gonna be 16 yr old spanish nuns or somthing idk
they also gonna make Nico straight and Will wont exist probably
I do not like these movies. They're bad adaptations. But... they're delightful. They're horrible and I love that. Where else can you get Poker Face, killing Medusa with an iPod, "Don't walk on my roof", and everything else? I wish they finished them off just to see how bad they got. How would they handle Nico? Rachel? It would've been atrocious : )
I remember watching the second one a few years ago after years of not seeing it, and it was hilariously bad.
Legitimately, i would have liked to see how Clarissa would jave avenged her totally platonic(!) Aphrodite-cabin girlfriend when that character was already a villain in the second movie
Experiencing Percy Jackson solely through adaptations has been interesting for me. I watched the first movie, and also read the 5 graphic novels. The movie is decent when you have nothing to compare it to, but the graphic novels are deeply confusing to me. Forget apparently cutting out important, heartfelt scenes, they forgot to establish entire characters in the graphic novels! Hey, random girl in graphic novel 4, why is everyone acting like you've had a deep and lasting relationship? I've never seen you before!
Which character was that?
@@caltheuntitled8021
If I had money, I’d bet like $100 they’re talking about Rachel.
@@-alovelygaycat- In that case, she only appeared in one scene before that in the original books. That’s not really a fault of the adaptation.

I remember watching this in school after reading the books as a class and everyone was just like; lmao what
Oh my gods, I was talking with a young teen the other day and he was talking about how much he loved Percy Jackson. I was like "yeah, it's great, which book was your favorite?" He said, "oh well I like the movies more." My friend and I physically cringed. Like, fingernails against chalkboard, curl up your toes kinda moment. I said "...ah, have you not read the books?" And this child said, "no I read the books, but I just really like the movie." My friend and I almost keeled over on the ground. Never before have I been in so much agony without actual physical pain (or someone dying).
Haven't read the books even though my dad had them so I wasn't bothered as a kid, just loved that Medusa and Lotus scene I remember that being the first time I heard poker face and my cousin was right there singing it with me only for my mom to say to stop singing it because it wasn't clean, wanted to eat those flowers man and the Medusa scene was probably better in the book but I liked how it was more low key getting there only to find a creepy snake lady just in this small corner of creepiness
If you watched these movies at any point in your life, you are entitled to financial compensation.
I emailed this to my 6th grade English teacher. He said, " You're not fun."
Before our Greek Mythology unit in freshman year we watched the first Percy Jackson movie and at the ending fight scene one dude asked where Spider-Man was
The poker face scene is literally the best part of these movies. And "Don't walk on my roof." That's about it though.
Don't forget that in the books, Percy's sword is a cap pen, and at one point he puts the cap on the back so that he can write with it. That wouldn't be possible with the click pen that the movies have.
It would be funny if you did Falling for Christmas reviews or Tall Girl reviews. Either way, loved the video!
What are you doing? Dont walk on my roof.
You should read reviews on a certain movie, based on a popular cartoon, that shall not be named next.
Which one?
@@ShadeATV There's multiple really bad movies based on cartoons???
I'm talking about the one whose main character's name starts with A and ends with G.
NOOO
0:18 The sad part is that they didn’t even get some of the wikipedia info right. Percy is 17 in the movie, not 12, he never lives in the Hermes cabin, and the pact of the Big Three is never mentioned.
When a movie’s plot feels like the screenwriter lightly skimmed through the book’s wikipedia page, that movie has a problem.
I am so so hyped for the new show
I really want to reread the books, I read them once in middle school and loved them but got them from a library so I don’t own any
i loved these movies as a kid because i have never and will never read the books. And that is the only way to even slightly enjoy these movies is to have never read the books.
I loved these movies as a kid and now as a person who's actually read the books I can confirm that they're not that good. Although I did love the detail of them actually eating the lotus, cause in the Odyssey to join the lotus eaters you actually have to eat a lotus (this was the one of the biggest thing I was mad at in the book, that and them saying Hercules instead of Heracles in the first series) so they did some research it may seem.
Also I was disappointed that we never got a 3rd movie now (mostly cause I wanna see nico).
love your reading, always look forward to it!
There are only two youtube channels upon which i receive "gay vampire fic podcast" midroll ads and this is one of them. cheers.

I had no idea they werent at all faithful to the books... but i too wish they had a full series, but now i wish the second to last one was perfectly representative of the book... and the last one was wild nonsense like the rest..... just to twist the knife
Forget hair of Annabeth , they merged her with Clarisse in 1st and made Daughter of Athena the Goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicraft dumber in 2nd
After watching this, I decided to go have a look at the reviews for the 1986 Transformers movie (creatively named The Transformers: The Movie). I am now experiencing the _opposite_ of regret.
Because of those books as a kid, I genuinely convinced myself that I was a daughter of Hades and would someday go to Camp Half-blood and have adventures.
The poker face casino scene is the best scene in that movie hands down
When I first watched the second movie I thought Logan was Danny Gonzalez.
I remember going to the first movie with my brother who read the book. He was not happy lol, also bro if you see this hiiiii

One thing that nobody ever seems to mention from the first movie: Grover had dinner with Persophone in the Underworld. Grover ate FOOD from the UNDERWORLD. And then he left. Despite the fact that eating a SINGLE pomegranate from the Underworld was enough to make her a prisoner!! This is more of mythology inaccuracy and yeah the books play around with being "accurate" sometimes but FML It was kind of a big deal to Persophone's story!!
I remember seeing the first movie as a kid and loved it because I also loved Greek Myths and Legend's. but I know now these movies aren't that great and I didn't even read the books because of how overwhelming the size of the books were and just struggle to read big books like that anyways.
But I hope that new one on Disney + is good.

Movie Adaptation Fans: Few
Comic Adaptation Fans: Me
my sister was a percy jackson fan back in the day. ended up watching both movies with her - the first one on dvd and the second in theaters. i remember barely anything from either and am all the better for it.
The first movie is genuinely good, as it’s own thing, it’s just a terrible adaptation of the book it’s based on. I grew up watching the movies before I read the books and was very surprised at the different lol
The dumbest thing about these movies is thet thry could have rivaled the harry potter movies if they had made it when logan lerman was a little bit younger and actually had rick riordan involved and were closer to the books.
The second movie was my introduction to fall out boy
this is how i find out Uma Thurman was in the Peter Jonhson movies.
I find it interesting how Percy and Grover kinda switched personality in the movie. It sounded to me that Percy was pushed in a "I'm the main character so I have to be more mature" thing and worst, that Grover was pushed in the "funny black guy" stereotype.
only good line in the entirety of the movies: "what are you doing? get off of my roof!"
(not exact line bc i havent watched those movies in years but idc)
The peter johnson one is amazing
I first got to know the book from a book presentation in school.
Than wished for the book for my birthday.
Than before my birthday came I watched the two movies and liked them.
Than read the book.
Didn't connect the dots that the movies were supposed to be based on the books.
Had fun with both though.
This is not a good movie if you realize the books exist. If you forget they exist, it’s such a vibe to watch and it is a time capsule of 2010
Ugh. I avoided thinking about these for a long time!
It’s like “the game.” The goal of the Peter Johnson movies is not to think about them.
I've never read the books nor ever had any interest in reading them, but boy did I own these movies on DVD and watch each of them easily 5+ times with zero complaints
apparently Rick loved the movie while they were writing and filming it and only started hating it when the final product was released. Kinda like Roald Dahl during the production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Ok but like… call it morbid curiosity, but I almost want a third one, just to see how bad they’d have fucked up the di Angelos.
I guess I never quite got the same level of hate for these movies as other people did.
the main thing i remember from the first one is the casino scene. idk why; it just stuck w/ me
I watched the first movie be4 reading the books and by the time I read the books I didn't remember how the movie was. Then I watched the second movie and OMG I NEVER SHIT-TALKED SOMETHING LIKE I DID WITH THAT MOVIE! WHY WAS KRONOS A GIANT LAVAISH DEMON THING!? LUKE DIED AS A VILLAIN WHILE IN THE BOOKS HE WAS REDEEMED! PLUS HIS DEATH WAS SO STUPID! I'm glad there was no third movie with how the second movie strayed from the actual story I don't think they would be able to do something even average
