    You guys definitely need to find at least some pictures for the stuff you're talking about. Because "transparent hyper-aluminium" just doesn't cut it without an image.

      Of course this will come out in golf clubs first, won't it? Maybe I need to pick up golf to play with stuff this cool. But I can never quite get the ball through the windmill....

      There is no future that we can experience.
      The only "future" that we can experience is the continuing present forever changing, and the past is but a memory fading away.

    • @DanB95
      @DanB95 8 лет назад +2

      But we aren't in the present. All our senses take time to get to our brain, and time to process. Even if it isn't a lot of time, that still means we cannot perceive the present. Idk if that makes ANY sense, but it does to me. xD

    • @C0d0ps
      @C0d0ps 8 лет назад +3

      ***** The present is what we experience.
      How long it takes for our brain to comprehend and view things is irrelevant :p
      Even if it might take a few micro or nano seconds before the light hits our eyes or everything we do have some sort of a delay.
      It's still the present for us.
      We experience what is going right now.
      I understand what you mean.
      But, without a present there can't be a future or past.

    Self-healing concrete....?
    ...I live in Spokane. Have you seen our roads? Have you driven on our roads? Do you know how much we spend on repairing these shitty roads every year with cheap asphalt that dissolves under our de-icer every winter? Summertime is called the season of con-fuck-tion in my group of friends and family because every main road is undergoing repairs, and you can't get anywhere. The roads become a potholed mess less than a year later. It's absurd.

      +Dr Scrubbington I doubt invisibility cloaks make someone invisible to sonar, radar, and infrared or motion detection. A lot of homes already have alarms to detect such things so even with an invisibility cloak you would still shine as bright as day under an infrared cam.

    If the government invested more money into scientific research, we would be able to quickly find new and innovative ways to produce these super materials and jump start a whole new industrial revolution that would improve everyone's lives. Unfortunately, United States spends only 3% of its federal discretionary budget (less than 1% of total budget) on science. Republicans love talking about how a successful businessman should be in charge of the country (it's all they talked about in the 2012 election), so how about listening to the most successful businessman in the world, Bill Gates, who says the federal government should invest more money in science if it wants to improve the economy.

      +The Truthful Channel true, but more money is not a direct garrentee that it will be done much quicker. These things take time, people need to be educated and ideas need to be thought of. But yea, 10% federal spending towards sience would be great (says the biomedical scientist XD)

    This video is great. Occasionally I give lectures to High School students about the field of Materials Science and I might add some clips from this video to it (giving credit, of course). Michael is an engaging speaker and they do a great job keeping the content interesting and explaining on a level that most people would get. My suggestions:
    1) Add music. Listen to videos by similar channels like Kurzesagt, VSauce, Vertitasium. This video sounds sorta empty because behind the speaking, there's no sound.
    2) Don't put up all the words on the video. Your audience will listen to you or they will look at your slides. They can't do both, and by speaking and putting up words at the same time, it's hard for viewers to fully process one or the other, even if they're at the same time.
    3) Add in more pictures or animations. For pictures that were not a typical camera (like the Metal Foam), briefly explain how the instrument (SEM, TEM, etc) works so people know the scale of what they're looking at.

    • @NeoWasami
      @NeoWasami 5 лет назад

      To be honest when I watch the informative videos like these I prefer them to not have music because it can be distracting or even ruin the video depending on what they use (I did pause to look at your examples and they are not bad I just dont think its necessary). If the object of the video is to engage and inform then I also disagree with number 2 because some people learn visually versus oral by including both it allows both spectrums to be able to enjoy. I watch a lot of subbed foreign content so I have developed a taste I suppose for text especially for when words or concepts occur that I dont readily understand im able to pause to slowly read over again or google (I also enjoy that the terms or concepts are also highlighted among the text. I do think they need more pictures for the things they discuss but sometimes that may be difficult to find and to much visual may keep the listener from processing and understanding the concept or fact they are discussing. All in all I think they have a pretty solid formula for dispensing the content and may not change due the fact that the viewer may not enjoy the change if they decide to go full nickolodeon. But who knows You never know until you try and considering the stuff talk about is still interesting it might be worth attempting if only to bring more people into the know.

    Diamonds are frequently used in these applications (as an abrasive coating) due to their hardness not their toughness. These are two different (but related) physical properties. Hardness is the ability of a material to resist surface deformation from an external object. Toughness is the ability of a material to resist self-separation due to an external force (like kinetic shock).
    Diamonds while very hard are not very tough. You can scratch mar the surface of a steel spoon with a diamond by scratching it. But you can shatter I diamond with that same spoon by hitting it. With minerals hardness and toughness tend to be like the two ends of a sliding scale. Usually the tougher a mineral is, the less hard it is and vice versa.

    • @clayxros576

      ClayXros That's what I was assuming, but what would the bacteria do if you inhaled/ingested some? Hopefully, were more knowledgeable in the near future than we were back in the first century. It took us until the 1900's to figure out the stuff kills us.

      Yeah, I'd rather have glowing roadways coupled with rooftop solar panels on every residential, commercial and industrial building which would be a fraction of the price of solar roadways, easier to maintain, and far more effective.

      The fact that one project was a shame doesn't mean that the entire concept is a waste. In most urban areas, travel space is the second highest percentage of space taken up (after homes). It's a good idea, if we can find the right materials.
      It would likely require some type of plastic, but at least it wouldn't emit fossil fuels.

      It is a normal sentence.
      They (the people who made the video) are putting the overuse of a particular word (the word "like") within the graphics of videos now (and not just overusing the word in speech).

    An amazing episode!
    Also, I liked how you muted the audio from the recommended video (the signature music of the channel is much more important to listen than random words at the end of a video).
