Thanks for answering my question, Alan! Really insightful.. I didn’t think about the pressure placed on a smaller coaching staff. Thats even more reason to add to the coaching staff.

We need to sustain drives!!! The problem was our defense was exhausted by the end of the season

Good stuff Alan, I'd like the team to expand the coaching staff too. One note about Dunbar that's worth keeping an eye on if he remains on the team. I disagreed with his assessment of Benton when he publicly stated Benton was a NT when to me it's obvious Benton is a classic 3-4 DE in the mold of Cam, Tuitt, and Aaron Smith. What shocked me were the photos and video from training camp of a very lean Benton. Maybe they were looking to get more speed/burst from him but it looked like reduced muscle mass from the prior season. Certainly not the approach you want from an anchoring NT and probably not the best approach at DE with a long 20 game season ahead. Strength and fitness coaches share the blame but I'd expect our DL coach to keep tabs on his players offseason work at minimum from minicamp on. From just simple pictures and video I didn't expect we'd see the results we'd hoped for a second year break-out candidate. How is it possible Dunbar can't see what was plainly obvious?

I think they need to bring on a better strength and conditioning staff! Way too many soft tissue injuries this year. Also they looked weak the last month of the season. Makes me think of the 2007 season when they were weak the last month, of that season. Need some serious upgrades on the offense as well!! Hope they can find some! Thanks Alan, Love your work!

All that has to be done to fix the Steeler's coaching staff is fire Mike Tomlin. Then no more issues.

Pat Meyer was fired by the Carolina Panthers after two years. I am curious on your logic of what makes him a good coach. A Google search of his Wikipedia page shows he is usually fired after two years at most of his NFL jobs. Don't see it, sorry. Just my opinion

Why aren’t shazier and Williams coaching their position?? They were LB not RB and DL

The steelers need a fresh start in the coaching staff. Tomlin has lost control of the team.

Pat Myers is not a good coach just look at some film on Jones, he is awful. If I can see it why does not Pat Myers see it and work with these guys to improve them. Two years ago they had a guy they moved from RG to LG he did not play well, they trade him for a 5 or 6 round choice to the Rams , they put him in at RG, two years later he is a all pro. Next year Jones will suck they will trade him for a 5 Rd draft choice, and he will become a beast of a player, all because the Steelers do not know how to develop a OL.

Jones is a LT not RT. Fautanu was injured as was James Daniels. Dan Moore jr only played because Fautanu was injured

Tomlin keeps hiring the mediocre coaches and coordinators and they continue the mediocrity on the Steelers. When’s the last time a coach or coordinator under him got a HC position anywhere?

Alan, you’re a good guy and a good reporter/podcaster. I love your work in all of the formats. However, you may be too close to the people with the Steelers. You interact with them and see them for most of the year. I am an avid football fan and a lifelong Steelers supporter. The failures on this team start at the top and rest with every layer below. When the owner does not demand greatness, he won’t get it. When the HC won’t allow top football minds to craft the offense and defense to best succeed, you won’t. When there are players on the team that violate rules and do not perform to the level that is required, but receive no significant consequence, your team falls apart. Bottom line on that point and a rather blunt message:
Mike Tomlin will not allow any top guys in the coaching room and does not provide his hand-selected ones with enough autonomy. Arthur Smith is the OC bc he believes in an eerily similar offense to what Tomlin wants. Teryl Austin is the DC bc he took the job knowing that Tomlin is actually the defensive leader. It is insane to think that the outcome will change when the same system remains. If Rooney would insist on new coordinators (who can bring their own position coaches if the choose), we may look at Klint Kubiak for the O, Martindale, Wilks, Graham, or even Ryan for the D. Then beg Munchak to coach the OL. If you are saying that the organization won’t pay for top coaching talent, then they are fools.

Poor coaching, team preperation (coaching), ability to react and addapt to changing situations (coaching), team and player discipline (coaching) and player development (coaching) has been the biggest hindrance to Steeler success for YEARS. Yet no one seems to want to address the Coaching issues.

Because they won 10 games. There are 24 teams that wish they won 10 games.
They have drafted like shit. The Cupboards are bare when it comes to talent.
It's not like players leave and become stars.

Man why do we continue to beat the dead horse in the room that offense has been bad for several years now, let us not forget we led the league in 3 n outs a year or so ago, Tomlin hires these sorry azz coordinators who don’t know what the heck is going on, before the D can catch a breather ooops we need you back on the field, this year was no different, we did the same 💩at the start of every game, 1st play let’s run the ball on 1st down, we went the whole season without scoring an opening drive TD~ just pathetic 🤬🤬🤬

I like the idea of adding to the coaching staff, especially with highly talented coaches. However, this decision seems to be totally up to Mike Tomlin. I don’t think there’s anyone that Mike Tomlin is actually accountable to in the organization. He seems to have all the power for change. This is why I’m not sure that this strategy will be employed.
